ariel describing how “there there” is about all these characters traveling to the same point me, an english major: she’s going to compare this to the canterbury tales ariel, also an english major: so it’s like the avengers incredible
I LOOOVE the eclectic nature of your hauls, because it introduces me to books and authors I’ve never heard of instead of the same 12 books that are in everyone’s videos.
A note on Halfbreed: the first edition did not include 1-2 pages that depict a scene of sexual assult inflicted upon Campbell. The page was ripped out without Campbell's consent. Two women approached Campbell years later, telling her they would find the page. She said that they were all burned. These women found the page in the archives with a red x across on the page. Campbell added that page to this new edition. She is incredible.
@@BethanLCollins EXACTLY! I had such a huge need to talk about this book that I made a review myself, because there are barely any videos on it yet BUT IT IS SO GOOD
“so I think I’ve got to give this book another shot WOW that’s a tiny font, that’s unfortunate. I’ll tell you right now that’s unfortunate.” 😂😂😂 killed me
I knew there were going to be books I never heard of because I have a committed relationship with my favorite genres, but I really didn't expect you to throw an actual textbook at us lol
i usually prefer when an author reads their books!! this year i’ve consumed a lot of audiobooks so i have some favorite narrators i notice right away, but i find it so personal when an author narrates. they give the characters the perfect voices and nail the jokes.
This lockdown has definitely seen my library and TBR expand massively. Lol. But hey, there are definitely worse things we could spend our money on. My 10year old has also been wanting many new books and I have a rule that if he asks me to but books I agree to buy it. Computer games not so much.🙈 Lol
I just LOVE when you do bookhauls, Ariel! I literally sit here with Goodreads open and just add rec after rec to my "to read" list. :) Such an eclectic, fun haul!
I think it's great that you talk about such a variety of books. I feel like people mostly talk about the same books over and over, so i really enjoy your videos where i actually find out about new books that i otherwise wouldn't have known existed!
I’m loving your energy in these videos, it’s so positive! I also cannot get enough of your eclectic and diverse book hauls, it really helps to see a lot of content that isn’t talked about because it isn’t YA or popular and it’s on those discoveries that we mostly find books we tend to fall in love with! Also, I’m so excited about the fact that there is a graphic novel of The Great Gatsby! I love that book so much and graphic novels, cannot wait to dive into that!
As a member of the Mohegan tribe( first nations) I am beyond pleased that you’ve chosen books by native authors about native subjects and have chosen to talk about them, I hardly ever see this on book tube and could never tell you the amount of graditude that comes with seeing a non native being interested in our culture even if it is within books, if you’re ever in ct or anything come visit Mohegan Nation!💙
As someone who’s starting to find new reading tastes, much attributed to university enlightening my reading experience. I love that you don’t just read what’s big, you’ve made me pick up so many books that are weird and wonderful, and to just buy books that catch my eye when out and about.
I love watching your book hauls and stuff because you have such "obscure" books that literally no one on booktube is talking about. Your stuff is just so well rounded, and it reflects your desire to learn and expand your horizons, and then there's popular fiction thrown in every now and then. It's not a curated list of booktube darlings like other book hauls tend to be. I can't wait to check these all out!
At 7:40 I love when the Adio book are nerrt by the aouther here some: Just Kids by Pati Smith, All Boys Aren't Blue by George M Jeason, The Conference Of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins, Black Flamingo, Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs by Caitlin Doughty , The Gender Game by Jono Dawson
honestly, the way I look at it is i think that it's a good sign that your book haul is filled with books that seem really random because it shows how widely read and adventurous you are in your reading! :)
I can’t even. You are so entertaining! Especially with the chair. I love how you just keep talking as you spin around. So hilarious! Ready there there 1st.
I started following you because of your home renovation. I have not really read a book since high school (10 years ago!) but the way you talk about reading got me so inspired to start back up. I have read a book a day since I started and just wanted to thank you for reigniting my love for reading!
Clarice Lispector is indeed AMAZING and one of the best Brazilian authors, but I have to say that we have produced a lot of incredible authors! As a good Brazilian, I feel the need to recommend two: Machado de Assis, which is arguably our most famous author. One of his best books is The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas - which got a new translation last month and the Amazon copies sold out in a day. Also, if you want to reignite your love for contemporary, there's Vitor Martins! He has three books published here, and they're all fluffy, happy, queer rom-coms that I think you'd enjoy! He's making his international debut this year with Here The Whole Time (also, the cover is stunningly beautiful!)
Speaking of throat singing, highly recommend the band _The Hu_ , a Mongolian metal band that utilizes Mongolian throat singing and traditional instruments. They were featured on the _Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order_ soundtrack last year.
it makes so emotional to see foreigners reading brazilian author's, im so soft... thank you for showing native author's, i don't know any outside of brazil and is so important to read from their perspective, especially considering how shit our countries treat them, thank you! 💛
So, the Great Gatsby as a graphic novel, Beach Read, are the only books I have heard of in this haul. I read The Animal Farm and The Handmaid's Tale graphic novel adaptations this year and enjoyed them.
Omgg you are beautiful and fun as ever! 💗 i stopped reading when I stared college because I had very short amounts of free time 😭 but I’m starting to read again (now as a fourth year) and your channel was one of the first ones I started looking for. So all I can say is thank you for still making videos and still being here 💗 so excited to start my reading habits again!!
Clarice is simply incredible, one of my favorites. If you want to dive more into brazilian literature i would recommend picking any of Machado de Assis’ books. He is amazing, probably the greatest brazilian writer that ever existed.
i know you comment a lot on how you don't read YA anymore but that's honestly why you're one of two (the other is readwithcindy) booktubers i watch now. i love YA but i'm not a big fan of common booktube, and it's never been the only genre i love! so i really do admire the variety of books you get excited about, because i get excited about them too!
LISTEN TO THE SPLIT TOOTH AUDIOBOOK!! That listen was my FAVORITE last year. Throat singing included as a part of the experience. Absolutely adored that book.
i too prefer listening to the authors narration of their book rather than a different person , they feel so authentic and warm to me especially memoirs
I hate how we have to have a "favorite" genre. A genre couldn't be generalized, and it's much better to just read stories that attract us, whatever the genre.
I love Clarice Lispector, she was an amazing Brazilian author! I’m truly glad that you’ve chosen Hora da Estrela. Personally my favorite Brazilian authors are Machado de Assis and Guimarães Rosa but I really appreciate the effort to diversify the authors. I believe you’ll love the book, and seeing your tbr makes me believe that you would enjoy The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas
This video is exactly what one needs on a rainy day :D thank you, Ariel! I've been really curious recently what books you read in two of your university courses that you've mentioned on the podcast. I would love to know what you read for your Time Travel course and your Magical Realism independent study. Plus what books in those lists became favorites. If you ever find yourself stumped on what to film next, I would honestly rush to give that video a watch. Thank you for all your content! Your videos always get me inspired about reading!
Actually Heartstopper is in grey-scale. The teal is the American edition. For anyone who wants to read it, it started as a webcomic and you can read it on Tumblr, Tapas and Webtoon
whenever i see another view of yours I just get so excited to read alllll the books! I'm looking over at my TBR as I type this, and am like, "I wish I could read these all at once!" You always reignite my love for reading when I'm feeling slumpy
i totally agree with what you said about school shaping our "hate" for certain books, authors or genres. I remember in 9th grade my English teacher was the absolute worst, i hated her, i hated the class and all the kids in it. I was totally miserable. We read Fahrenheit 451 and I could not say enough bad things about it for years to come. Fast-forward to college, my sophomore year im taking a science fiction class and we are assigned a good chunk of short stories from Bradbury's Invisible Man. I loved my professor though and when she saw me groaning over Bradbury I told her the story with F451. She gave me a bit of a look, told me to just trust her and start with The Long Rain and go from there. She was totally right. I freaking loved it, could not stop reading! I'm actually on a bit of a personal challenge to re-read the books I hated in school. I have a feeling that the results will be pretty similar. Bad teachers can make even the greatest literature seem like garbage.
I’ve started listening to Books Unbound while I’m doing chores around the house and it’s so entertaining! Plus I wanted to know what colour your nails were, they look so pretty.
Can I just say I’m so glad I found your channel? You talk like your talking to a friend and I love that! Like I’m sitting next to you and just chatting about books ❤️
Thank you so much for mentioning Libro.fm! I'm a bookseller, and it's so hard getting my customers to switch to Libro.fm from Audible, even though it's the same price and they get to support my store instead of Amazon. It's so discouraging seeing so much advertizing and sponsorship for Audible on RUclips, and I love seeing a Booktuber advocate for Libro.fm. They're such an amazing company! They even give advanced reader audiobooks to booksellers!
So happy to see my country's literature spreading. Clarice Lispector is brilliant and unlike anything you will read in your life. In the same note, read Machado de Assis, best Brazilian author
I think the only way to read a memoir is when the author reads it! I love hearing them voice their story because they know how to tell it to make it the best and have inflections where they're needed. For fiction, give me a person with a wonderful voice who can change pitch to get different characters. Not a big fan of full casts, though I haven't found many for the books I've read.
i love how ariel made me expand my love for books. i bought my only graphic novel called climate changed and i dont usually read non-fiction nor graphic novels. i also heard of it from a comment in one of ariel's videos and i found it on sale and bought it impulsively and if that isn't the most ariel bissett thing ever, im not sure what is. (the book has beautiful illustrations btw)
I love that Helen Keller's book. And in summary all her life full of strength. I saw the miracle worker uncountless times and never i get tired of that film and all the remakes of it.
I'm a new subscriber and slowly making my way through all your incredible videos! I adore them so far, your personality and your pure joy makes me smile and I've now got an ever growing list of books to make my way through!
Literally everytime I watch one of your videos (especially book hauls) I feel like buying books and read and read and read all day long (and I already read A LOT ). you're magical...anyway the only book I knew was The great Gatsby (ooops) and after this I'll probably go buying the illustrated version 'cause it looks so cool and also the other books 'cause they seem reeeeeally interesting. Please don't ever stop making videos, I NEED THEM!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love how varied this book haul is! And thanks so much for sharing the books written by indigenous people! It’s really important to me that I diversify my reading, and now I have some fabulous suggestions! Split Tooth is calling to me. Thank you for always being a Booktube inspiration!
I highly recommend the audiobook of Split Tooth! She incorporates throat singing throughout the narrative, and it's such an immersive experience! You can really tell she's a storyteller/poet as well :D One of my favourite reads this year for sure!
I love the art style of New Kid and the way the protagonist's drawings are a device for the illustrations. Felt really short and felt like I wanted more from it but it's an important story to tell!
My favorite thing about your videos is that you read so diversely in every way! I love that I don't recognize the majority of the books in this haul!!!
@3DogMom I commented this before any of the Reading Rush drama happened. I watch book hauls to learn about books I might want to read. I just thought it was cool to see a book haul where I didn't know all of the titles, and that is what my comment meant.
This is my first video of yours, I'm a brand new subscriber - I'd just like to say: Thank you for reading widely! So many booktube channels/bookish social media people read exclusively YA fantasy. As someone who prefers other genres, it's refreshing to find new content that spans a wide variety of books!
Oh my goodness; I read and reread The Story of My Life at a minimum of 20 times in elementary school. I checked that book out from my school library so many times, I had a friend and we would just switch off on who was checking it out. I'll have to reread it now.
I really liked The Handmaid’s Tale graphic novel! I also like when the author narrates the book, especially if it is poetry or told in verse. I’m also Canadian so thanks for introducing me to some interesting Canadian Reads!
I love that you have Founders at Work in this haul! My favourite "startup book" is Lost & Founder by Rand Fishkin. I otherwise can't help but roll my eyes at the Silicon-Valley-white-tech-bro-non-fiction books, and Fishkin's book is perfect for not being anything like those. I wish you all the success in your endeavours, from one entrepreneur to another :)
I’ve only recently began watching booktube videos (thank you readwithcindy) and I’m so glad I found this channel! I love a solid YA book like many others, but I also love learning about new and interesting books, especially by someone who is so passionate like Ariel! ❤️
ariel describing how “there there” is about all these characters traveling to the same point
me, an english major: she’s going to compare this to the canterbury tales
ariel, also an english major: so it’s like the avengers
incredible
This comment made me VERY happy
Hilarious. And I'm an ENGLISH MAJOR. oops
“As things got harder and sadder I bought more and more books” is now the title of my autobiography😔😂
Perfect Title for a book about 2020
Literally just commented the same quote lol. It's an iconic one.
YES!
I will most definitely be purchasing your autobiography lol
Or, the first sentence in that book.
Ariel: "I bet there's at least one book you've never heard of."
Me: *challenge accepted*
First book: challenge lost.
ahhahahahhaa
same djbdjebdj
Right there with you
the only one I know is "the great Gatsby" 😂
SAME hahahaha
Someone: What is your favorite genre?
Ariel: Yes.
Frida Khalo
Favourite genre: the written word
I LOOOVE the eclectic nature of your hauls, because it introduces me to books and authors I’ve never heard of instead of the same 12 books that are in everyone’s videos.
Ariel: *buys another Frida Khalo book*
Everyone: "..."
Ariel: *NO IT'S NOT A PHASE*
A note on Halfbreed: the first edition did not include 1-2 pages that depict a scene of sexual assult inflicted upon Campbell. The page was ripped out without Campbell's consent. Two women approached Campbell years later, telling her they would find the page. She said that they were all burned. These women found the page in the archives with a red x across on the page. People who listen to books unbound have a real advantage for the challenge, a lot of books I’ve heart of because you mentioned them there
hahaha listening to the podcast is HELPFUL! you hear that, people?! go subscribe!
Ima need you to finish a beautifully foolish endeavour soon. NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH REVIEWS
@@BethanLCollins EXACTLY! I had such a huge need to talk about this book that I made a review myself, because there are barely any videos on it yet BUT IT IS SO GOOD
I just subscribed yesterday and I love it so much!!!!♥️🤍
Ariel spinning in a circle with her chair and not stop talking absolutely made my day 😂😂
“so I think I’ve got to give this book another shot WOW that’s a tiny font, that’s unfortunate. I’ll tell you right now that’s unfortunate.” 😂😂😂 killed me
“Remember when I just read YA.” AHH, I love how eclectic this is and how much you’ve branched out. So good.
I get so happy when Ariel posts! She's so positive and honestly a joy to watch, her videos always cheer me up!

it is so nice to watch a booktuber who has a similar taste to books to me and doesn't just read what is popular. keep up the weird book hauls!
i can't get over "STOUT ʰᵉʰᵉʰᵉ it's STOUT ʰᵃʰᵃʰᵃ"
I came to the comments to say the same thing 😂 That just tickled me
I think it's great that you talk about such a variety of books. I feel like people mostly talk about the same books over and over, so i really enjoy your videos where i actually find out about new books that i otherwise wouldn't have known existed!

I almost never watch book hauls but yours are always sooo interesting
I love watching your book hauls and stuff because you have such "obscure" books that literally no one on booktube is talking about. Your stuff is just so well rounded, and it reflects your desire to learn and expand your horizons, and then there's popular fiction thrown in every now and then. It's not a curated list of booktube darlings like other book hauls tend to be. I can't wait to check these all out!
i've only heard of two of the books on the list, do i get an anti-gold star lol
I love how random this haul is! It makes me feel less alone because I bop around quite a bit with different styles and genres too!

OMG our TBR just got so much bigger!
it makes so emotional to see foreigners reading brazilian author's, im so soft... thank you for showing native author's, i don't know any outside of brazil and is so important to read from their perspective, especially considering how shit our countries treat them, thank you! 💛
Oh My God. Clarice Lispector is the best. I wonder how they translated her work... in portuguese is already quite a difficult narrative.
So, the Great Gatsby as a graphic novel, Beach Read, are the only books I have heard of in this haul. I read The Animal Farm and The Handmaid's Tale graphic novel adaptations this year and enjoyed them.
I do love authors reading their books but there are some awesome narrators out there who do great jobs of making the story come alive
YES! I most definitely prefer when an author reads for their audiobook!

Surprisingly you're the most interesting booktuber for picking the most "unknown" books imo! Love your videos!!!
Love that you read non-YA and more obscure books! Honestly, I'm not big on YA and I love finding booktubers that don't emphasize that genre.

hahahaha GOTCHA!
I hadn't heard of There there either. 🙈I must have been living under a rock. 😂
OMG Loved The Hour of the Star!!! Read some Lispector earlier this year, that book is cool!
I'm super early here but I'm not complaining. I'm just concerned because does that mean I'm on the internet too much and not reading?? lol
Story of my life
My dilemma everyday 😂
Yes, and I have the same problem
Same! 😂
Is it cheating if I know books cause YOU mentioned them in the podcast 🤭
I for one, love that you're branching out to all these obscure genres. 🙌🏽
Ariel: it’s a strange stack of books.
Ariel Fans: POPCORN PLEASE!
I LOVE A MIND SPREAD OUT ON THE GROUND! I highly recommend it.
I stumbled across your channel yesterday and I’ve been binging the whole time !
I’ve only recently began watching booktube videos (thank you readwithcindy) and I’m so glad I found this channel! I love a solid YA book like many others, but I also love learning about new and interesting books, especially by someone who is so passionate like Ariel! ❤️
As a Spanish speaker, you saying "muy bueno" gave me life
