I definitely think people would be interested in a video about making reading a habit, and you could even do it as a challenge. 1 video could be read for 30 mins when you wake up for a week, the 2nd video could be reading on your lunch break for a week (I've done this one!), and the last one could be reading before bed for a week and then after that you can find out which one works best for you and go from there.

Try habit stacking! Basically find a habit you already do that can be a trigger for reading. What I did was for every time I go to pick up my phone for social media I would put it back down and pick up a book instead. Checking social media was a habit so I used that to trigger the reading habit (and it got me off my phone) :)

I've gotten into the habit of reading while the washing machine's going (so about 35 minutes a pop). I like it because even though it's not always a super consistent on the dot time, the repetitiveness of the activity kind of has the Pavlovian effect of getting me to read; hear the sound of the washing machine, hands start itching for a book.

It really helped me to get back into reading by setting myself a challenge: read one page every day. Make the goal so easy that you almost have to do it every day. Usually i will just keep reading after the one page because I was already doing it. It helped me read soooo much more

I find that romanticizing my daily reading routine HUGELY motivates me to actually read the books I accumulate. Sit down with a nice cup of coffee or tea and make yourself comfortable. I always like to open a window, turn on a cozy ambience, and light a candle. Taking the time to read for at least 30 minutes, makes me feel ALIVE and ready for the day 🌸✨

I’ve been silently watching your video’s since your first bookshelf video back in 2013, back then I was only 15, a high school student in my small country in Europe, dealing with loads of stuff by escaping in fiction. Reading and writing. Your passion for reading and books has resonated with me so much and it kinda felt like I’ve been growing up with you? When I lost touch with my love for books and reading and writing, your own love for it always reignited mine.
Since you bought your own house, making video’s from a space that is just so much YOURS, idk, I feel like a proud younger sister or something? Now I just turned 23 and I still feel the same joy and love from both reading stories and your videos and enthusiasm. Just, thank you for everything you’ve done and been doing. Just, all the love from back here in small, little Belgium ✨🥰

Honestly, audiobooks (and a library card) helped me so much with starting up a reading habit again. Chores, working out, running errands, commuting -- these all become reading time. Sure, I look like a weirdo in the Ralphs at 9pm with my headphones in, but joke's on them because I'm not there, not really -- I'm in my book instead!

Being at university for a subject very unrelated to literature, I've always had trouble reading during the semester. This year I've made it a habit to arrive to each class at least 15 minutes early and read before class! I've managed to get through 3 books during the semester so far as opposed to 0... Also, per the recommendation of your podcast, I've started listening to audio books on my commute as well!!

At the beginning of this year I was quite depressed, and I got back into the habit of reading by doing so somewhere other than my bedroom (I used to lay on my brother's bed while he worked on his computer) and putting a timer on! On good days I set it for 50 minutes and on worse days for 30 or even 20. I also calculated how many pages per minute I read, cause I was curious! Just a neat little bonus! Thank you so much for all the content you're creating despite the times, Ariel, it's kept me going lately 💖✨ Keep up the great work!! 💕

There’s a Mexican booktuber called El Librero de Valentina who does a reading challenge to make reading a habit, you just need to define a number of pages or amount of time to read everyday. Beginners start with 10 pages or ten minutes, and the goal increases depending on what you want to achieve. But, the secret is trying it for a full month 😉

It has been invaluable for my mental health, sleep routine, reading routine etc. I am a teacher, so my mornings and days are so busy… so that time after 8pm is MY time… this is a habit/routine I have established over the last year or so ☺️

I've had great results with building a reading habit where I made a goal to read in three new places every week. Anything as small as on the floor in front of the couch instead of on the couch, or as drastic as at the end of a hike in a beautiful landscape. It got me really motivated for outdoor travel goals and helped me find my favorite places to read!

I just started a new reading habit that works for me! I read for about half an hour while I drink my morning coffee in the living room in front of my biggest and brightest window. I also just bought a house at the end of last year and found it difficult to find time to read because there’s always some project or chore to do (not to mention that I mostly used to read on the bus on the way to work but now I’m remote working and I’ve read less than I ever have this past year and a bit..) but putting some time aside at the start of the day to read is working great for me so far!

My reading routine means I read when I get up, when I get to work, when I'm on my dinner and before I go to bed, I also listen to audiobooks when I'm driving, doing chores, going on walks or in the bath. I sometimes listen to audiobooks when I run too. I have read 26 books this year because of that. Not amazing but its the highest amount of books I've ever read in a year and I'm planning to read another 9 physical books by the end of the year and maybe another audiobook. Wish me luck xx

i can't wait on the video about the livingroom inspired in the Emma 2020 movie! Also, i love the reading videos you make. I recently watched an older video of yours about how reading have become competitive and it made so much sense, its not about what you read, or the quality of your reading, or even your interaction with it, it's all about the numbers! So when i see you say that it's comon to drop off books i feel embraced hahahaha'. It just makes me feel like i cant take reading as a maraton run, cause that will exaust me in the process, but thinking about having annotations, impressions, seasonal books... It cheers me up!

To regain my habit of reading, I started reading every night at 8:30pm in bed until tired. It can be for 30 minutes to 90 roughly. Depending on my interest level or if I get absorbed in a book it will be longer or just a short half hour read due to a busy day or general tiredness.
It has worked great for me, hopefully you can create a habit that works well for you and you’ll be able to stick with it!

My reading habit that really helps me is a) just trying to read every day when & where I can and b) (this is the main one) I personally dedicate and *schedule* a few hours on saturday and sunday mornings for me and my coffee and my books. This weekend time helps me to recenter, to make sure I get some reading in in a relaxing satisfying way, and to have a dedicated time to look forward to if I don't have as much time to read as I want to during the week... Hi Ariel, your videos did make me fall back in love with reading and I had the time to spare because of this whole pandemic. My reading habits are reading *at least* 1 hour during the day, so that's usually on my break and lunch break for work. And then reading towards the end of my night. Giving myself a bookmark of how many pages, but if I find myself in a tedious mood to read then I don't bother because I know I won't be enjoying myself. Typically I read in our sitting room or at my desk. Happy reading and looking forward to what other books you recommend and the rest of your lovely house.

I built a reading habit of reading after I woke up for about an hour during the pandemic when I was unemployed, which i loved! I would watch a few RUclips videos and check my socials, then shut my laptop and read, which really helped wake my brain up. Now that I have a job, I don't have as much brain capacity to read, so I usually read on my lunch breaks. Then before bed, I'll read a graphic novel/memoir because it gets me away from screens but also isn't quite so text heavy when I'm tired. I've been reading a ton of graphic novels from the library that way! Good luck with your goals for next year!

A reading habit I formed this past year was finding a time in my routine to always read a bit. For me, it was during breakfast, cause I realized it helped me start my day with a bit more energy and the feeling of having done something already before working.
I would pick a time in the day for it and keep it. Having a time set helped me maintain it, instead of thinking of reading a bit every day. Because I ended up reaching the end of a long day really tired and remember I forgot my reading, and wouldn't want to do it by then, so mornings worked out best for me.

The way I got back into reading for myself regularly after finishing school was to start with graphic novels and comics. They were faster and more immediately engrossing to me than text only novels and they had a faster pace and a quicker reward for my effort. I could read several comics in an afternoon and have the gratification of finishing beautiful stories while I worked on my focus and remembering how to read longer pieces. That's what really helped me and my brain retrain to read for pleasure.

I have read the L.M. Montgomery biography and collected journals that you mentioned- both are great! She is one of my favorite authors and has been since childhood. Definitely read all the Anne books as they are all worth your time!
Also, what really got me back into reading as an adult is reading in the bath. I put my phone in a different room so I don't have anything to do while in the bath other than read. I take a bath almost every night, so even if that 20 minutes is the only time I spend reading, it adds up! Often that's all the time I need to get momentum with a book, so eventually I find myself wanting to pick it up at other times during the day.

I have a "read 30" item on my daily list, read either 30 minutes or 30 pages. And just over the last year or so I've just opened new reading spots all around the house. On a pillow on the stairs, on a blanket in front of the open veranda doors, breakfast table, new chair in front of the bookshelves, couch in the bedroom I've never used before etc. I like that thus I can pick my preferred time and place to read every day.

The one thing I do to create a reading habit is switching to reading whenever I catch myself spending time in social media. I think it’s a more valuable way to spend my precious time whenever I’m off work.

I’ve been doing the pomodoro method to keep me focused at work and I read instead of getting on my phone during breaks. It has been really helpful in getting me reading. It’s nice because I am interested in what I’m reading, but it’s not hard to put down like my phone is. I’ve gotten more reading done and more work done.

Hi Ariel! I’ve started getting back to reading after years of not picking up a book and one “habit” that I built to help me get back was to pick up a book whenever I find myself picking up my phone when I turn idle. It not only helped me lessen my screen time but also made me read more (i started Q1 only reading 3 books to reading 12 books in a month haha) I found that physically placing myself in a cozy spot helped with that a lot too. Not sure if this was helpful but wanted to share nonetheless! 💖

ARIEL that sweater is amazing! I pre-ordered as soon as I saw it! I'm so obsessed! I live in Korea, so I think it will get here closer to December but that will be a nice Christmas gift for me ^_^
I've gotten back into reading by making a habit of setting the mood for reading when I get home. I light a candle, turn on my favorite lamp, and put a nice ASMR room on the TV. I have read so much more! I try to reach for a book instead of instantly going on my computer, etc.

I did read at all my last couple years of school (outside of required reading) so when I graduated I had to make a routine from scratch, so I kind of understand!! really only one thing helped, I had a specific routine around reading. it was always 4pm, summer at the time, and I'd make myself Tea, grab a blanket, grab a book and go sit down in a the field by my house!! usually no phone, just the book. I found having a specific order or events really helped bc once I set it in motion I would do the rest automatically, and once I actually go the where I was going to read I'd had time to shift my brain into reading mode. I'm not sure if this will help but good luck creating your own routine!!

I struggled with actually reading classics. So I made it a goal that I read a chapter (or a manageable amount of pages if there were long chapter) a day. I could continue reading more if I wanted to but I could also read whatever I wanted after and it meant I read more in general because I had to read that chapter. I've fallen off it for the moment because I'm studying again so I only want to read things I really enjoy but will eventually go back to it once I'm done.

2 things that I did at different times in the past helped me a lot with creating a habit. First was when I used the subway to go to college, it was 30 minutes of me doing nothing, read a lot at this time. Second time was because of vitamin d lack (yes) in the start of this year, the doctor said I needed to sunbath everyday, so I woke up, layed down in front of a window and sunbathed while reading

I read Anne of Green Gables and the Blue Castle this year because of you and I loved them both! Especially Anne, that book is so undeniably sweet and I am aching to pick up the sequel. Even if you don't often finish books you pick up, I am thankful that you mention them, so I can read them myself!

The best way to create a new habit is to stack it with something you already do, eg. After lunch you read for 30 mins, as it adds to the routine you already have.
I'm currently reading Emily Climbs by L.M. Montgomery (the 2nd in the Emily of New Moon series), which is very similar to Anne of Green Gables, so I'm certain you'd love it if you get to it.

Per reading as a habit: I always read right before bed! I do actually read in bed (sitting up on a large pillow), but reading at least one chapter before bed is a pretty solid habit I’ve had since getting back into reading in adulthood

What works for me in terms of reading habits is setting a minimum time per day, but make it a small amount of time, say 15 minutes. There's always 15 minutes! Of course allow yourself to keep reading after that or read more on a day, but the key is you don't have to. I'm currently reading my way around the world and I'm loving that so much that I don't need any motivation anymore :)

love that goal of giving yourself a month to read a hardcover when you buy it because def have fallen into that trap of buying the books and they just sit there. i think a recent habit i've been forming is if i find myself doomscrolling just read instead and also to not feel bad if i just want to watch youtube or some shows either. good luck with your reading plans for the rest of the year!

5 years ago I set a goal in my bullet journal to read at least 20 minutes after I came back to work, 3 times a week. I used to read before bed, but I was going to bed really late so I didn't read much... I didn't want set a goal too big and too hard to achieve. Now 5 years later I read every day and much more than 20 min most of the time.
And I'm reading Anne of Green Gabbles too (but in french) and I'm looooving it!

As far as reading habits go, putting your phone away, ideally in a different room, can really help with concentrating on a book. Also maybe it sounds dumb but what about carrying a book with you through the house and just reading little bits in between renovation projects?

I have read 78 books this year. Something I like to do is switch between a "fun" book and a book I read for knowledge on something (usually witchcraft books). My husband likes to play video games every night with his friends so I sit and read while he does that so we both can have our "me" time. It comes out to about 1-2 hours of reading a night, depending on how long it takes before I fall asleep with a book on my face haha

I've had good results with combining habits. For example... my morning routine is to get up, stretch, eat breakfast, then have a cup of coffee. One day I decided to tack on reading a book with my coffee so... now it's a dual habit! Coffee, plus book.
