I also started to quilt when I became a widow at 40. Before that, I couldn’t sew a button on to save my life! Hi Beth, well I just couldn't wait to make enough scraps, so I cut a quarter yard off a bunch of fabrics and odered about 10 fat quarter bundles from Amazon, a week after their arrival, I'm knee deep in 1" strips and have 80, 5" pieced squares and 6, 9" blocks. It's so easy and I just can't get anything else done. I haven't sewn for over 2 years, and this was just the ticket to get started again. Thank you so much, I'm back in the groove.
I watch a lot of quilting videos. Your channel is always so relaxing and seems so stress free. Many channels spend so much time with starching, pinning, and seem to make their projects so complicated. I like your style and will watch several videos multiple times. Your quilts always end up perfect to me. ❤
I so agree about all the chitchat sometimes . I have been quilting quite awhile and this is a fantastic way to use up scraps.. lNot perfect but finished is perfect! This really looked kinda hard but it looked simple to make but I have to be careful about how much rotory cutting i do so I was glad to see you use the scissors to cut the one inch strip. This looked fun to do!
Haven't read all 442 comments, lol, so maybe someone else saw this, but if you cut multiples, you could switch around the smaller triangles in that square. If so, you might want to use the "white strip" option Beth mentioned early in video.
I do like the idea of making all the strips in white or same color of choice since it reminds me of a garden lattice. Always such great ideas and you inspire me to make your quilts!
Wow, you have such a great imagination when you see the potential of 5" squares. I really like this one. Reminds me of looking through a lattice trellis at a garden.

Thank you very much for this video. I made a version of it from a fat quarter bundle using 9" squares and 1.25" x 9" strips. I got four of each squares and strips from each fat quarter. The result was gorgeous.
I have bin of my grandmother’s florals and she had beautiful flower gardens all around her house! So many of you mentioned white for a picket fence look! I am so excited to finally have a vision for a memory quilt!❤️
I watch your quilt tutorials and you have such beautiful ideas. But more than that your soothing voice draws me in to follow you and you show how to do it with such clear instructions and visuals to go along with it. It seems for me as well you bring me to a place where the peacefulness of it all draws me away from low points and makes me want to just do it in hopes I find someone to give it to that will truly enjoy having it. From my perspective of what I see you doing and sharing, you are a true blessing to this world.
I'm thinking of using a rather large number of civil war prints & a dark solid strip for this. I've been playing with these charms for months. Thank you again for all the inspiration you send our way.
What always strikes me about your quilts is how you can envision cuddling up under it…and isn’t that the essence of a quilt…you have a gift for creation of comfort
What a neat way to use 5 inch squares. I always seem to have a lot of them . I do a lot of charity quilts so I am always looking for different ideas. Thank you. I have used a lot of your ideas for quilts. I love your videos. Jo
Absolutely adorable! What a cute idea! I see it done in Christmas squares with green and red strips. The possibilities are endless. Thank you for the great idea!
This is my kind of quilt, Beth. Only two rules...cut the 5" block at 3.5" from point to point and the strip is 1" wide. No other requirements. Scrappy quilts are generally random and mostly uncontrolled...love it!!
I took a class from a lovely quilter who grew up in Montana during the Depression and who is no longer with us. The pattern is similar to this idea and we used florals with white fabric strips. It was another pattern, but for her class she called it "In the Garden." It's a wonderful way to use up all those extra florals. Somewhere I read that when you buy cotton quilting fabric, buy some inches extra, depending on what you want to do with it. Cut off a 5" strip of each one and you'll have ready-made pieces to use for squares, etc. Currently, I have a small tub of them to use.
I knew I had watched this video before. I just didn't remember commenting. I didn't remember seeing the hour glasses the first time. It's such a beautiful quilt with such a simple touch.

I need to literally write this out and keep it handy as a reminder so I can just do what I love and not let perfection be my task master!

Thanks for the tip about taping a paper template to a ruler for easy corner cutting. I haven't made a quilt since I was 17 (52 yrs ago) and at that I didn't buy batting. I took apart an old comforter and made the top and back and then knotted it. My youngest son today loves that quilt and has it on his bed. This pattern looks so complicated but your clear instructions shows me that I can do it too. Thank you so much again! Happy thoughts! :)
I agree with all the comments. I love how you just relax, believe in the process and it turns out beautifully. I would be a nervous wreck doing it like you do. I honestly think that you are amazing, Beth. ❤
One inch strips are great because, when sewn in, they don't change the dimensions of the square. You can sew in several one inch strips, either direction, and the square's measurements stay the same.
I just finished a quilt using that block pattern. It was so much fun to make that I couldn't stop till complete! I put 1 " finished sashing strips between the blocks with 1" finished anchor squares at connecting corners using backing fabric. All my 5" squares were a collection of scraps from myself and 2 sisters. I love it!
You always inspire me to sew Beth, have not done much the last 3 years due to my husband having dementia, I have started sewing again, first off finish all the UFO's, which Im doing, and then this quilt is definately 1 that I will be making soon, thank you your scrappy quilts inspire me, your videos are just perfect, down to earth and easy to follow, Thank you Again from Australia.
This is beautiful ... Thank you !!! I'm saving this and hope to one day be able to concentrate and focus to sew again... I can relate to the ladies in feed below. May God bless you all reading this!!!!
Thank you for your tutorial, your method is so straightforward!! As soon as I saw this I thought “Diamond Squares”!! I also appreciate your choice of music, great listening!!
Thank you Beth! I have a big stash of charm packs that I inherited from another quilter who passed. I was running out of ideas that don't cause lots of waste. Another great quilt!!!
I have some beautiful florals that I look at and cannot envision cutting into small squares or triangles, this is the perfect size!! Thank you for your inspiration!
I love this quilt/pattern! I"m "Country Chic," so this speaks volumes to me. My "bff" (since 4th grade 50 plus years friendship) and I have been discussing this pattern since I discovered it 'three months ago or so... I finally found 'just the right fabric--only, mine's going to be somewhat 'monochromactic 'in blue (as in bluebird, bluebells, or forget-me-not flower's 'blue)! And, using the beautiful 'Lulu's 'Bluebirds on blue as the diagonal (all one color) 'to form the diamonds...: I want my quilt to speak, "'soft, feminine, quiet, calm and peace..." 'not that 'cheerful won't be something I go for next time (because I know I'll be making this pattern more than once!)!
Beth, making progress on my quilt, it turning out beautifully! I decided to add a diagonal to two opposite sides of the square, which is a bit more labor intensive, but yeilds the secondary patterns of diamonds on every row. It really is elegant. With the Brother Sister Studio Bluebird Blue fabrics, with five repeats, it's yeilding a third diagonal pattern (and, because of the diagonal pattern, instead of sewing 4-blocks, I'm having to sew rows instead)... this is quite a pattern, Beth. It would be fun to see the many diff results that can be generated from this concept you created. This pattern is so versatile. Again, I love it!
Beth I have a huge box of 5 inch squares and wondered if I would ever use them. This is the perfect project and I will get started right away. Thanks so much. I love your stress free style accompanied by the lovely music choices!
Oh my, Beth, I smiled through this whole video. How fun to see you use all those familiar florals! I think our quilt twins are both perfect. Thank you for bringing me back to the creativity of quilting. Figuring it out as you go along reminds me of watching a painter. Much love to you, sewing friend! 🌸
Thank you for this lovely quilt block, Beth! It inspired me to jump right into action and begin cutting out 5 inch squares from the vintage florals in my stash. I am going to try an alternative in the piecing: mixing up the small triangle corner fabrics to make it even scrappier! I've tossed the little corner pieces in a paper bag and am picking them out at random to sew to the larger pieces, no two will match. I also decided that the thin insert slices of fabric in this new arrangement will be the same white fabric repeated throughout, joining all the pieces. I hope mine looks even halfway as lovely as your example when it's completed...
Thank you for your quick response. I’m impressed when the quilters answer my questions. I’m hooked on this craft and don’t want to leave my sewing room! Please show lots more!
Beth, wonderful idea. I like how you trim them up as you go. You create your quilts with ease. Your tutorial’s are very calming and wonderful to watch! Thank you- Staron
I retired 3 years ago. I was an RN for 40 years and needed a hobby. I returned to sewing from high school days. I just finished a sewing program to refresh my skills. I had even forgotten how to put the bobbin in correctly. The final project was a quilt. That was 2 weeks ago . for my comfort, i chose the 2 colors lap quilt. I did not grow up with quilts and thought why do people make them.i did not know what i was going to with the quilt i made. I hated it. This is the quilt that has ignited my passion to make quilts. I have hated floral patterns, now I love them. The quilt is so cheerful and fun to look at all the different prints. Up to a few weeks ago, i was a person that needed everything to be matching. Now i love variety. I am such a newbie i have no scraps LOL. i am going to the fabric store and getting small amounts of fabric for the strips. ;-} thank you so much for all the detail of making the quilt top. And also saying it is Ok to not have it perfect. That alone has decreased my stress. I now have a purpose and will be joining Project Linus. I would call it spring time. Once again thank you so much.
Love this ❤️ I would name it "Trellis Garden Windows". It definitely reminds me of the Wisteria lattice we had in New Orleans, and now the Clematis Vine in Wisconsin.
Shadow Boxing would be a great name for this quilt. What caught my eye was the play of light and dark, bright and subdued against each other. What a great and simply inspiring idea. I love this quilt!
Good Evening Beth, I really like how you added a accent to this block. It looks like fun to make too❣️ I love working with five inch squares. Have a joy filled weekend. 🥰 Chris

I took a class from a lovely quilter who grew up in Montana during the Depression and who is no longer with us. The pattern is similar to this idea and we used florals with white fabric strips. It was another pattern, but for her class she called it "In the Garden." It's a wonderful way to use up all those extra florals. Cut off a 5" strip of each one and you'll have ready-made pieces to use for squares, etc. Currently, I have a small tub of them to use.
Another idea would be to swap out the triangle that gets cut off and sew it on to another triangle

yes...very kind!
I love it!
You always inspire me to sew Beth, have not done much the last 3 years due to my husband having dementia, I have started sewing again, first off finish all the UFO's, which Im doing, and then this quilt is definately 1 that I will be making soon, thank you your scrappy quilts inspire me, your videos are just perfect, down to earth and easy to follow, Thank you Again from Australia.
glad you're able to sew again!
I love your idea here. "Flowers in a Box!"
And, using the beautiful 'Lulu's 'Bluebirds on blue as the diagonal (all one color) 'to form the diamonds...:
I want my quilt to speak, "'soft, feminine, quiet, calm and peace..."
'not that 'cheerful won't be something I go for next time (because I know I'll be making this pattern more than once!)!
I love it! Your music and your voice are peaceful, almost like meditation! Thank you for this video lesson.
What a brilliant tip to make inserting the strip very easy to do. Now why haven't I thought of that!! Thank you
Oh my, Beth, I smiled through this whole video. How fun to see you use all those familiar florals! I think our quilt twins are both perfect. Thank you for bringing me back to the creativity of quilting. Figuring it out as you go along reminds me of watching a painter. Much love to you, sewing friend! 🌸
Thank you for sharing with Beth who could then share with us! I love these fabrics and this quilt and BETH!
thank you! I had so much fun playing with your squares!😍
Thank you Aly for sharing your generosity with all of us!
@@bethshibleyquilts I love the added dimension of the splitting of the squares and orientation of the blocks

Hi. I just found your channel today and I love it. Thanks so much for the great idea. The strips make a great addition and a wonderful pattern ❤
Thank you for your quick response. I’m impressed when the quilters answer my questions. I’m hooked on this craft and don’t want to leave my sewing room! Please show lots more!
Thanks for all your great videos!
Name for quilt block: Cutting Corners. :)
Great idea!
I really like this block! A great way to use up 10”, 5” charms and who doesn’t have scraps to cut the 1”strip! Brilliant ❤
Beautiful quilt Beth❣❣ beautiful pattern and fabric. Great job💯👀 I love the music you chose for this video. It's soothing. XXXX
That’s novel, very pretty. That ruler is the best, so many uses.
Your quilt is a beautiful pattern within a pattern. It causes one to take pause and appreciate that for a moment.
Very pretty you always have such a great vision for fabric 🙂💖
thank you
Love your ideas and thank you so much for sharing you talent and time!!❤️cherie
Love this ❤️ I would name it "Trellis Garden Windows". It definitely reminds me of the Wisteria lattice we had in New Orleans, and now the Clematis Vine in Wisconsin.
Shadow Boxing would be a great name for this quilt. What caught my eye was the play of light and dark, bright and subdued against each other. What a great and simply inspiring idea. I love this quilt!
great name!
Genius Beth..such a lovely idea…very pretty quilt. Thanks for sharing…x Dottie x
Glad you like it!
That's beautiful, I would call it 'Frame it'. The Frame it quilt.👍🏼
Great use of my charm backs, love this. Thank you.

Country cuteness! The quilt is gorgeous. 💐
