That was a great review - we need more technical/objective reviews that are rooted in actual metrics of quality in the craft - so many reviews out there are just emotional responses - legitimate, yes- but anyone can give an emotional response - this is actually informative (regarding the craft) - thank you! And yes, you deserve a pallet-cleanser by way of Andor - you would have a blast doing your style of review on it as well as simply enjoying a fantastic show - and given the folks/channels you have been appearing with, it would do EVERYONE a lot of good hearing your fresh yet ‘experienced’ take on Andor - and Lucasfilm needs to hear it as well. 👍🏻

As average viewers there are things that triggered our alarms but we don't know why. We're aware of the problems in writing, dialogue, acting/directing and lore continuity errors. You point out the flat lighting, the flipping of the order of scenes for the establishing shots of the fortress, the different drawings, errors in logical progression that also take us out of the show - and then you show an alternative way of doing what they did. You're presenting more validation for why we don't like it.
I wish you good luck in finding more positive things to say - it's really hard.

My goal isn't necessarily to turn people against it. I want to educate and expand minds, help people look past the obvious and look deeper. If their original conclusions remain unchanged, then - as you said - it gives them more validation when faced with empty accusations of being an *ist of sorts as they now have more information to support themselves on.

I was also confused by the seeming switch-a-roo of the girls in the scene by the tree. I guess it was just sloppy staging on their part?
The bows were something I didn't notice, but I'm not very familiar with sports/hunting equipment. They could have made them some form of energy bow. Those are a thing in Star Wars, but maybe those didn't exist when these witches went into hiding? 🤷‍♀️
I noticed the same thing in the "I carried them. vs. I created them." scene. 🙄
As for the chaotic, unchoreographed ceremony -- I saw a bit of behind the scenes documentary. It was actually intentional. 😂 The performers playing the witches were supposed be a "culturally diverse group" and were told to just do and say their own things representing their own cultures.
Love the idea of Osha working on the bike with Kalamazoo (Autocorrect renamed the Wookie and I'm just gonna roll with it.) So much of the series falls flat because they don't take the time to give us meaningful charater beats. We don't care about the characters and we aren't given much reason to think the characters really care about each other.
Contrast that with something else like the Bad Batch. The emotive peformances and charater dynamics throughout that show seem to me far superior to just about anything I saw in Acolyte. A few of the actors try to make the most of their roles in Acolyte, but just aren't given enough good material to work with.
Thanks for another excellent review. I really appreciate your technical insights on these works. It's a perspective I don't have but find very interesting.
And, yes, you've earned a break from the Acolyte slog.

Anxiously awaiting more content. Definitely interested in your opinions on Andor. There are story arcs in Andor - episodes 1 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 (interlude), 8 to 10 & 2 part finale - so essentially 5. As there are 5 episodes of Acolyte left, you could intersperse them or take them episode by episode - either way you'll see a difference.

@@kneepayne I think its a toss-up between bad writing and bad planning. I tried to explain the story of this series to a friend who thought they may want to watch it. I really couldn't do it! Not that the story is so advanced like Game of Thrones but it is so confused and convoluted in its material and messaging. This whole story reminds me of asking a child coming home from kindergarten what they did today.
What kills me is who throws $180 Million and doesn''t have the scripts locked down, story boards locked and loaded. Effects and costuming planned and involved before the first frame of film is loaded. But this is Disney who did an entire trilogy for $800-900 million without scripts or stories... Leading to "Somehow Palpatine has returned!"
Love your show!!! I am also deeply affected by framing and continuity errors.... that witch scene will go down in history as one of the worst ever purposely put to film. The poor editors!

Amazing review. I noticed the bows when I watched other channels reviews and I couldn't believe that the show runners used a recurve bows as weapons for the witches! That indicated to me that the show runners went cheap on purpose, instead of being creative and create a unique weapons for the witches that would suit the Star Wars universe, they went and got recurve bows and used them with a very minimum modifications. They could have given the witches nothing as weapon and it would have been a better option then giving them bows, after all they are witches.
I didn't notice the drawing change when Mae burned the book, you are the first I saw who mentioned it, amazing catch!
All in all, this tells us that the current Disney/Lucasfilm doesn't care about Star Wars and its quality, whether in terms of story-telling or production value in general. In the old days of Lucasfilm, when it was under George's control, we used to feel the love that was injected into the production of the original Star Wars movies, and I believe that played a big part on making those movies timeless and suitable for all generations.
The magic was lost but the talent is out there and it could restore it, so, I hope one day to see Star Wars back to its glorious days, and this requires a big change in Disney and Lucasfilm.

Great analysis! Wholeheartedly agree with that speeder maintenance scene, too. I'd do one better and have a scene prior to this where Osha was fascinated by the wookie's existence and that it plays into her curiosity for the outside world. So, when that scene kicks in, I would have had Osha run up to the wookie the moment they arrived for their test, before her attention is quickly diverted to what he's working on. Have her ask questions in the background as Mae watches on, annoyed, but before she has something to say she's quietly lead away into the ship with a parting eye roll. Queue an establishing shot that some time has passed before she re-emerges and, like you said, there's Osha still fussing over the speeder with the wookie giving tech advice.
But yeah, wasted potential. The fact she becomes a mechanic later in life annoys me that this was never thought of to exemplify that. It's good storytelling 101.
Terrible show aside, I do appreciate you picking out the positive elements. Constructive criticism is a lost art for most, and there's nothing wrong with being petty over minor details!

    • @kneepayne
      @kneepayne  6 месяцев назад +1

@kneepayne Hello Knee Payne, I am very impressed with this review and that you took much time and effort to highlight the good and the bad aspects of it, with much attention of detail. You are not being petty . I now know what pickup and rim lighting means.
I agree with you that the planet of Brendock should have been revealed at the start of the episode for a logical progression of the Jedi’s mission. I also agree with you that the forest area didn’t look natural with the lighting and the scene behind Kelnacca and his speed bike looked like a cardboard backing .
I wish the writers followed your version of the ascension ceremony which for me would have made more sense and wouldn’t have come across as a parody of the wicked witches of the west with the singing being out of tune.
I also picked up on the other witches not having a forehead tattoo but I didn’t pick up on the differing jedi symbols in Osha’s books. I also liked the lamp.
Like you, the episodes of the show were quite confusing for me. I also was confused about the power of two concept that was revealed in this episode. Also, the mother stating that they don't wield the power of the thread ( force) but then she uses the force to create her children and carries on about power . And it wasn’t explained why Osha wanted to be a Jedi? And didn't the Jedi only take in babies and toddlers, not much older children?
This episode screwed up the lore of the Force. As I see it, children conceived via the force without a father via dark means, is actually going against the will of the force, is an unnatural conception. The force would push back at this, would not have allowed it, due to this act inducing an imbalance in the force. Plageuis experimented with midichlorians , hence the force pushed back at this, by creating Anakin to bring balance to the force. Thanks again🐨🦘

Back to the concept of the place being a mining facility/outpost/whatever: If that's the case, there would be some kind of records kept of the starship travel to and from that place - and that the Jedi have no tether to that information prior to their 7-weeks-ago arrival - man, it's such a rub. So many rubs in fact that it's sandpaper which is the reason that this program suffered for so many reasons.
The concept of "well, it's just a small thing, no one will notice" is true - until there is now a treasure trove of "small things" that have now added up and cannot possibly be put into story as a burden that you hope the audience will not notice. I had thought about doing a compilation of "the little things" but instead, I put them in my content and associated a small cartoony "broing!" in with them.
If they choose to launch season 2, I will likely go back and make another episode highlighting them all in prelude to the second season's launch.
