Impressive work. Also impressive that you are helping out a friend in need. That makes this job much more significant. You put lots of extra hours and creative effort into this to save money. This will be another interesting build. Looking forward to the next video and the finished product. Be sure to video the rollback bed in action. Got to see that Thanks again for taking us along on this interesting project. !
Nice video of a well thought out conversion. Like the grease barrier between the frame sections to avoid corrosion. Glad it's going back together without any gotchas. Watching for part 2, nice work. Stay safe, talk soon. Doug@ the "ranch"
hey doug! its coming along. lots of work to go on this one. big project with loads of man hours invested. need to be efficient. there are plenty more trucks waiting their turn.
Consider adding some additional cross members between the back of the cab and the axle spring hangers. It will assist in keeping the frame rails strait when heavy loads are applied. In years gone past my dad and I added ell sections to tandem axle dump truck conversion much like you are doing. You are correct it will work and we never had any frame issues when converting a road tractor with a fifth wheel and a light frame section to a tandem axle dump trump service. Our tandem dumps also had a pup hitch on the very rear to pull a pup dump trailer. We also lengthen truck frames using a ell section reenforcement like you are doing.
You make it look easy! I've had some Australian guys comment that they actually put grease zerks in their frame rails when they double frame them so they can add grease and prevent rust.
Hi, I just want to say that you are a good man . The fact that you are helping a friend out like that is great to see. That is a lot of hard work and sore bones. I hope you and your family receive the good fortune you deserve. This has made my week. I was depressed with the amount of bad news around and it is great to see some kindness to a neighbour. Take care...and remember the taillight guarantee!
J.C. I know from what I have seen on your channel that you know what you're doing! I hope the keyboard warriors just keep their mouth shut for this video! You are such an inspiration for people who are up in the air thinking about doing anything like this! Or a lot of your videos that pertain to commercial vehicle frame alterations! I personally believe that you go way above and beyond what most people/shops do when altering a commercial vehicle! You are the man when it comes to this kind of work! With that said, keep up the great work and keep the great content coming! I always look forward to seeing your new videos! You, your wife and the rest of your family stay safe and healthy! Best wishes for 2020 Dan @6-4_Fab Glen Rock, PA, USA!
thanks for the kind word dan. i do what i think it will take to make a good reliable truck. i dont want to do something that will cause headaches down the road.
Keyboard Engineers, well said! I've stretched and shortened lots of trucks, but never did an air ride swap. Should be fun to watch. I'm glad Zane told me about your channel!
I used to work for a guy that had a 4700 rollback with 19 aluminum jerrdan bed, it had the 444 engine which is a 7.3 and 5 spd eaton trans. Tough old truck, I don't know if it was double frame or not but it was spring ride and I know it hauled some heavy loads from 12x24 portable buildings to f450s with tool beds. I seen the front tires off the ground 3ft a few times when trying to lift the bed.
Always loved the look of the old internationals, drove a 4600 box truck for years, great truck, very interested to see the rollback setup, wish I had engery like you lol
i wish i had the energy i did 5 years ago. it takes me a lot more time to accomplish the same work now as it did back then. i guess my age is creeping up on me.
Yep your on to it, just finished similar project, added a sleeper too on International S line ( your 4700) but is a single drive prime mover ( tractor) your a bit better equipped though i see, good to see someone else doing it also
Air ride suspension makes sense on a heavy duty rollback tow truck. He'll have the ability to change the beds angle on the ground for low clearance vehicles/equipment, plus it will ride better than those leaf springs. If you give anyone advice they'd be wise to listen. You may not consider yourself a pro but you definitely know what you're doing.
exactly. the air ride suspension allows him to dump the air in the bags and lower the rear of the truck approximately 4 inches. doesnt seem like much but it is huge when considering the load angle. im no pro.....just a guy messing around with trucks.
Looks good. Personally I don't believe the angle cut is necessary, more important is to grind a radius where the top in your case or top and bottom in other cases contact the flanges. That is where the stress point really is. The coating between frames is essential with the salt. I use rubberized undercoating and install the rail while it's still tacky. Did you by chance price out new rails? The supplier I last dealt with was crazy cheap, to the point it wasn't worth messing with an old frame.
i understand what you are saying. eliminate the sharp contact point so there is some give and it isnt grinding into the frame. i might do that but i will still do the angle cut. i used grease on this budget build because my friend gave it to me. he bought it at an auction for $5.00! hard to beat that! new steel was far too expensive and not in his budget.
I have a 1986 model 1954 IH, want a 12 or 14 foot bed, has 16 feet of double frame, hate to spoil it if swapping trucks would help someone else, I'd rather trade trucks than cut one. Love the videos!
The customer/friend is going to be happy with the truck. Wise choice to go with air ride, for several reasons, most importantly the dump valve ability. Are the air bag-to-frame connections the way you maintain pinion angle?
Hi J.C. Greetings from Queensland, Australia..... Glad we don't salt roads here. It appears to me that you and Jonathon W suffer from the same keyboard critics. I like your explanations and reasoning behind what you do,,,, keep the videos coming... And to the critics I would say " Get off your arse and have a go"
Nice work. I have a International 4700 right now with a double frame that is rust jacking. What would be the best remedy ya think to resolve it? It was a flatbed and I'm putting on a service body for a mobile welding rig . Should I remove the top frame and replace it?
if it were mine, i would remove the double frame. clean up the main frame and evaluate its condition. be prepared to find some thin spots. at that point, i would decide on replace frame rails completely or replacing with a cutoff.
maibe put a set of airbag on the end of the rollbed use restrictors and an airtank under a constant pressure , the bags pump up automaticly when theres no load on them let the bed down untill it slams on the bags and they empty slowly through the restrictors intoo the airtank compressing the air from the weight resting on them when the rollbed is lowered on the frame , should lighten the mecanical force on the frame its probably a good idea to tar up the frame and the inside of the strenghtening part so water cant seep in and cause rust
truck is coming along nicely, will you be running an engine driven compressor or electric for the air bags? hope your family is doing well, take care and stay safe!!
mike, it will be electric.....but for other reasons besides it is easier. the compressor he has to use isnt your normal 12 volt air compressor....it is a bit of an oddity. it will require some additional equipment to run but it will suit his needs perfectly.
How do you put a flatbed on this? I have a double frame international that measures 35” from out of frame to out of frame and I just purchased a bed for it that is 34” out of frame to out of frame. What do you suggest?
If you can help, I would like to know if I haul a 20T excavator on a trailer with a 10 wheel dump truck (which I don't own at this time) will I need a CDL?
it can vary by state. however, if you are using the truck and trailer in "commerce" (commerce is "in business to make money or advance in any way") and the gross vehicle weight rating of the truck and the trailer combined is 26,001 lbs or more you are required to have a cdl. there are a few exemptions. based on the truck and trailer you are talking about, they dont apply. however, farm use or privately owned and operated equipment being moved for personal use only with no gain of any kind in ohio does not require a cdl.

@@j.c.smithprojects yeah kind of the same reason they use a thin layer of wood or plastic between the bed and the frame.
Slick idea to use air bags on a heavy hauler which usually do heavy equipment where load angle matters.
Even long steel plates on the outside of the frame will almost double its strength, so rock on!
i do what i do.....good bad or otherwise. i promise he wont have any trouble with the work i have done.

So when you added the frame onto the other frame didn't that change the axle width? What did u do to compensate for that?
the suspension has enough room in the mounts to "compensate" for the add thickness of the extra steel.
Good to see a video nice work
as usual enjoied your video, greetings from Belgium
thanks for watching paul!
Dude you are a master
Just a thought a metal pallet (try the local dirt bike shop quads come in some cool pallets... and make a cradle for the fuel tanks..
The customer/friend is going to be happy with the truck. Wise choice to go with air ride, for several reasons, most importantly the dump valve ability. Are the air bag-to-frame connections the way you maintain pinion angle?
there are plates between the axle and the spring that are pitched to create pinion angle.
Well as far as adding strength,I think the flange that is in compression usually goes first (buckle)so you are right.
What a good friend keep up the hard work not to may people out there today that will help there friends like that
Maybe I over looked something but to me it looks like this truck has hydraulic brakes.I was wondering what will feed air to the rear suspension?
good eye greg! we will address that in part 2.

i always try to put as many cross members in as possible. makes a huge difference in the amount of deflection you end up with.
