  • In this episode I pull of the fifth wheel plate to see if the frame is going to be okay after sever rust jacking. K2 is a 1988 K100E Kenworth cabover that had a 444 Cummins and 18spd transmission. The truck has been sitting since the engie blew up and was removed over 20 years ago...

I almost forgot, I had an old ironworker turn me on to a needle scaler when I was doing my frame and cross members on my old diamond t. It was amazingly how fast it did the job. Only need to use ear protection and good compressor.

Mike for K2 I would stick with a big cam Cummins. It would be cheaper in the the long run. No need to make alterations to the frame etc., for a Cat., and that's what K2 came with. And as with Kenny, you are more familiar with working on that vintage Cummins. As for the rust jacking, well I'm affraid all your rigs are suffering from it to some extent. I'm sure when you take the deck off Stubby, it's not going to be pretty, with it sitting on the ground all those years. Same goes for Low&Slow when you replace the wood on the deck. You just need to be prepared for it. With all the salt used up there in the winter. The age of your rigs and the mixing of different metals. It's no wonder you're encountering all the rust. Take your time, with sand blasting the frames and I'm sure your rigs will come out fine. Keep up the great videos, we're all rooting for you. Later

Mike, hats off to you, the way you just got stuck into the chassis was incredible. Great to see K2 being given attention too. It's not everyday you go out thinking "I'll just dismantle my chassis today". I second the suggestion of the needle gun for descaling, noisy enough to scare the bears away but very effective. I'd stay with Cummins too, easier to fit considering what came out, no worries about crossmembers, mounts, pipework etc... Can't wait to see it come together. So good to see these beautiful old trucks being saved.

Mike, you can weld up the extra holes in the frame. Get a needler, spray gun and about six of those shop lights that twin stick Mark got from princess Trudeau auto. And keep telling yourself that this is all fun. Your dad should be impressed with all you got done on your fleet over the winter while he was defrosting in Arizona.

Mike. Nice work pulling the fifth wheel off. Just did the same to my 76' K125, luckily only finding surface rust. Converting it to a straight tray truck, not as short as Kenny or Stubby though.
Having no lifting machinery I ended up using rollers to move the fifth wheel backward onto a stack of pallets. Then jacked up the steel tray onto drums high enough to back the truck under.
Fun working alone on trucks isn't it.

If you havent already seen his pete rebuild of an old twin stick should go see twinsticks garage the first truck he did mainly in the open in Canada working through winter outdoors now he has 3 trucks with the origional pete just needing a paint to finish it off. he also convinced hi9s better half to let him build a shed large enough to house all 3 of his trucks but i think he will end up with more yet LOL . Think he will enspire you when you see what he started with and what he has now, as he said it was one piece at a time!

Hi Mike! It's great to see some progress on K2! I love this KW cab the most! I am glad that the frame can be saved, but it will take time and just do it slowly. As far as repowering the KW, I would stick with Cummins! Maybe a Cummins Big Cam 350 as those are really good engines. My father's 1974 KW has a Cummins Big Cam 350 and it's still on the road making money to this day. Been overhauled many times. Still has the original block, fuel pump, oil pump and crankshaft. Everything else has been replaced at least once and the engine has over 10 million miles on it! And yeah, my father drove hard....

Hey Mike... Just a thought, don't take too much weight off the rear of the frame because if you tilt the cab, the whole thing will tip up. I saw this once when some guys working on an old truck took everything off the chassis and then tilted the cab and it up-ended and smashed the top of the cab and bent the main cab frame. And that K100 VIT cab looks heavy.

Nice to see you starting on K2. The sliding 5th wheel (that's what we call them) looks in reasonable condition. Are you going to be saving it? It might be wiser to pull the cab from the chassis, remove all the other bits and get back to the bare frame/chassis. Is it K2 you want to change the 'rear clip' on? (We say rear suspension here.) Then sort the frame and build K2 up from there. Go for the Cummins unless a CAT comes up.

Love the intro Mike! Och Aye! Gotta say though, think you had your beer goggles on looking at that frame... looks way too thin now and pooched. Transport Canada would not like that for supporting anything other than a trip to the frame shop to pick up some new rails... Just take all the parts off of it you want to keep and have the rest drug away. Is the Chunk rusted out too? I can't remember. I know you were talking about smearing panel bond on one of them [yikes] lol K2 needs a cuttoff for sure. Way too much rust where there aught to be frame. Looks too thin on the top flange. :-/ At least on video it looks like the insert is way thicker than the main rail and I wouldn't trust even that one. :-/

As a mechanic is thinking (me) I felt for the working mans money, its best spent on the cummins as at the end of day, the difference in miles till time for a inframe, if your dead broke you go detroit an scream dirty words every day about how imbalanced the money is. You go cummins and those are a engine that forgives a lot of mistakes.. minus a oil shortage, that will take any of them out. Cat is a gold yellow for a reason as its pure gold to fix an they break down just as often for many reasons. It is so easy to achieve any power that you should desire with the cummins. I pumped my first truck and it started life as a small cam 220 nothing special and got out run by a detroit running a 00 71 series.... I sniveled to a guy who was a guru of fuel systems and a few days later seen that truck that had passed me like I was on a jack stand... let him start coming by me and then I would tickle it up and he had to work it harder just to keep up.. he was sweating an I looked over and waved good by.. I stood on it and was pushing the old pyro right up there but knew how to bring it back down and not lose a liner even tho my stack was turning blue at the top.... One night coming out of the mountains, I had a good heavy load an pushing to get home... it had been a while. I happened to catch a look at the top of one of the stacks and it was black dark out side, yet my stacks had fire coming out about three feet in the air and the carbon floating should of set the woods on fire... I did back her down a bit then. I had over a million miles on that engine and considered keeping it when I got my new glider but chose one of the first big cam ones out so you know how I vote. Oh, very happy about K2's frame

Hey Mike what are the small airlines running under the turntable do they have something to do with the moveable turntable ,my next question why do you the turntable ours are fixed down .My next question I watch Bruce Wilson and Tim Gentry they cut chassis and weld them back together is American laws different to Canada ,it's a highly specialised field in Australia needing Engineers certificates for chassis mods so you can get your DOT registration,in fact chassis generally have signs saying do notdrill or weld chassis .
Yeh take a break mate don't injure yourself
    Cheers Kym

The small air line just releases the dogs so you can slide it forward and back. It's a grey area when it comes to cutting and stretching a frame. Technically we should have an engineer sign off on it but if it's inspected in a shop and deemed safe and done properly it's okay.

Do you or have you seen video of anyone swapping frame insert? Or is it easier to just swap the frame?

I'd de boss k2 if she's going to be a show truck otherwise you'll never have the finish you wanted. I'd get a new rolling chassis with disk brakes and air bags all around have it a new classic kinda save yourself alot of work
