This is seriously inspirational as a GMT800 owner. I've got a rusty old '05 Escalade EXT as my beater truck and it has done everything I needed it to and more even while being in very rough shape from the previous owner. 6 years of tough conditions (4 of them in Buffalo, NY winters) and I would love to give it this treatment someday - she's earned it
I keep one of those magnetic key boxes on my truck and beater car. They’ve saved the day more than once. Looking forward to your next installment in the D-Max saga.
I did this entire process to my 03 silverado just a few weeks ago. Replaced all the crossmembers in the rear and derusted the entire truck basically and painted it all up with por15. Just got done with bodywork a including fixing the rocker panel holes, then bedlined the whole truck black. Came out good, won't have to worry about rust for a long time. Also fluid filming it before salt season. Wish I had a lot of the tools you do here for this job haha
@@mm-nl3qz it's worked pretty good but I would suggest 2 coats instead of the 1 coating did. Or 1 coat and something else, like bedliner. ALSO definitely pay the like 8-10$ for some crossmember frame caps. Coat the whole inside of them with oil. I used fluid film, get some sealant and apply to caps, push the caps in the holes. Crossmembers are sealed and protected, will never fucking rust on the inside atleast. I also got wheel well liners from rough country that work so good to prevent waters and everything just shooting up at the frame. I just bedlined my entire truck too

Hi there ,just a little tip from a old seaman, when using a needle scaler ,dont push it down, let it dance on the surface, that would make a better result. And about the truck ,I like it ,but i cant for my bare life understand why they dont use any real rust protection on the frame and under carrige,I personely have a 97 2 door 4x4 6,5 l diesel Tahoe , when imported to norway was undercoted by the dealership, and is still rustfree on the frame and undercarrige, the only rust is on the bumpers, and i live by the westcoast and drives on salted roads all winter long. Great work ,looking forward to the next step. brs
Cuz it's lasts the warranty beyond that they really don't care. Like they kept using raw steal brake/fuel lines from 40yrs, kept rusting...but they didn't care. Every other manufacturer had switched to coated lines years earlier
You have the best automotive videos on the internet - not to mention wonderful truck, fabricating & communication skills. I rarely comment, however this has given me new motivation to continue restoring my ‘96 stick shift 12 valve. Good job, Waldo.
Yep I'll go with the truck interest sure thing , that's a great job there ! Good to see Dinos Detroit 353 s still working away , great filming thanks Waldo !!
Waldo I think you’ve missed your calling, again you have produced an interesting and informative video that was just right in terms of length, well done 👍🏻
Waldo you have inspired me to restore my dads old truck he passed away when I was young and I just got the truck from my grandfather a few days ago but it needs work… it needs control arms and a rear cross member along with new rear shocks
At least its not like my 97 S-10. Spare tire was never used but decided it didnt like the truck anymore and just fell off one day...lol. Gotta love rust!
Great restoration... I will give you a tip for future metal work with piping though. Before you weld the brace or piping and seal it, its best to pour a acid wash through the inner piping to cleanse it and prevent the rust from getting worse in a year or two. Clean work though!
I was hoping you were pulling the entire cab and doing a 100% refurbish. That year is one of my favorite in life. I’m 57. I’ve driven gas Chevy pickups 350,000 miles no major issues from that generation. My wife’s 2001 Tahoe took us 362,000 miles with a transmission swap and we sold to some friends who have driven it over 500,000 miles!! Your truck.. well it should be on RUclips 50 years from now if taken care of.
Vehicle rust is basically a non-issue in my area but I would've primed the frame before painting and painted the new rear crossmember before installing and oiled the inside of the tube crossmember.
In my experience, it's basically no use painting a frame around here. The salt will always find a way to get to the metal. The only way to stop it is to coat it with oil every year 🤷♂️
I randomly noticed the sub count go up ~200 yesterday while I watched a few Cummins swap episodes. I see this video within 20 minutes of you posting and notice the subs are up by 1k. Congrats buddy. Good content and quality video editing.

Also I have a 5.9 Cummins step van w/64k and would luv to swap a nice Duramax Allison combo in it, or at least swap the Allison 545 with the Allison 1000/2000 6 spd behind the 5.9. The newer Allison has a lockup converter and two overdrive gears to help with the 4:56 rear gears.
Wow, I learned a lot on simple wielding and fixing rust parts. Looking forward to watch more of your videos, you explained each part that you do very well. thnx
Hey dude I enjoyed the video; however, since you took everything apart and mostly down to bare metal, you could have brushed on some rust encapsulator, or sprayed on some raptor liner after a coat or two of self etch primer, or rusty metal primer (the brown one). Then later on you can still spray the undercarriage with wax, etc to protect from New England winters, but I doubt any rust will make it through that top layer of raptor. Truck undercarriage would look mint too!
Bed liners are super durable, but water and salt usually end up getting underneath it, and once it does, it causes the metal to rust even faster because it holds the water/salt there. In my experience, oil undercoating once a year is really the best way to keep water and salt away from the metal 👍
I stumbled upon your channel. I enjoyed watching it very much. I'm in Massachusetts and own a 2012 GMC 1500. I was under it the other day and saw the frame looked like a cheese grater. Since u r a rust warrior like me I'll share this with u. My Pap worked at Ford in Ohio next to Lake Erie. A coworker drove a late 40s sedan in 60s. Pp asked how do u keep that car from rusting out with all the salt? He told my pap a good wash, dry then do this, 1 quart of any new or used oil, same with trans fluid, 1 tube or tub of grease, 1 or 2 wax ring toilet gaskets. Put all in a old pot, heat and mix. Then brush, spray etc everywhere under, in etc. For doors plug drains and fill with mineral, baby oil, trans fluid, or even melted Vaseline. Let sit for a week and drain and save for next year. This all costs less than $10 and will outlast anything u can buy for 5, 10 times as much. Alot of the waX has no oils or very little. The oil, fluid and grease is key to stopping rust permanently. I've used this method, my father's used this, neighbors etc. U can use on anything that gets exposed to water, salt, mud etc. I'm for saving these older autos. New autos are not same quality. Thin metal, barely coated. New ford's and others have rusting issues b4 they leave the lot. It's sad but that's the world we live in. Meanwhile a mid 90s celica is still rust free.
