  • Moving along on the dump truck. I spent way too much time drilling holes. I don't have a magnetic drill with anualar bits...but that will change soon. I will have one before I do this again.

    You should hire those guys from the Pakistani truck channel, they don’t need any tools except for a hammer and a chisel and they have the whole truck torn down and rebuilt in about 20 minutes..... I’ve seen them do it!!!

    I realize this video is 3 years old J.C., but have you invested in a needle scaler for your air hammer??? They work awesome at chipping off the rust. That's a good tip to modify that speed square. Extending it could be useful for a bunch of different scenarios. The wife is awesome. I think as men who turn wrenches, we can appreciate our significant others sharing our interest, and not being afraid to get in there and for their hands dirty. 😃😁

    Again, LUCKY MAN, you are truly blessed to have a wife that no only helps, she gets in the thick of it and gets it done...
    2 thumbs up to Mrs J.C. for the hard work she does, I'm totally impressed.
    Truck frame looks great, I knew you wouldn't throw it together without a little love, it will be worth your efforts when it's complete.

    needle scaler works awesome for that. best to get the full-size inline one, as the air hammer attachments leave a lot to be desired. you got it right describing the framing square thing. it works good as you can clamp it to top of frame, freeing your hand up for layout. I like those tall jack stands, what's the size and brand of those? I think you did the right thing by lengthening the drive shaft. BTW, I think we all knew you were going to paint that frame. I think that's a good call, ditching 1 tank and moving battery box and air tanks.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад

      that framing square worked out perfect! thanks for that tip mike...i will use it many more times. those jack stands are 10k each, 25" collasped, 48" extended, i ordered them from summit racing. i sometimes kid myself by saying i am going to "throw it together cheaply". the reality is i like things done the best way i can do it....you knew i couldnt put it together as a 72" ca or not paint the frame. this will be a many part series i am sure. i hope i pronounced your last name right!

    How does shortening the wheelbase affect the steering angles? I am referring to Ackerman steering geometry.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 лет назад +1

      sounds like a question an engineer would ask. the majority of the ackerman steering principle is in the amount of angle the left and right steer tires turn in order to track with the least amount of tire slippage. the inside turning tire will turn slower and at an increased angle compared to the outside turning tire which turns at a lesser angle with a faster speed. these angles dont change when changing the wheel base but the turning radius of the entire wheel base does. i had had no adverse affects when shortening a wheel base on a truck of this size and weight.

  • @jeffcoldon1496

    you seam to do a lot of trucks I got an international 4700 the frame is realy rusted on top in some spots from wood under a 24 foot box and some spots on the sides I chopped off some thick pieces I was thinking to beef up the frame put 1/4 inch plate the length of the frame on the inside vertical its about 8 inches wide bolted and welded to the current frame it would require me to shorten every cross brace 1/2 inch you ever do any thing like that I know its a lot of work. or option 2 is get another frame or truck

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад

      i have international 4700 truck frame from a 24' box truck. i would swap the frame. plating your rusty frame is a lot of work also and for the end result...i think replacing the frame is worth it. you can do one rail at a time with the entire truck in 1 piece.

    • @jeffcoldon1496
      @jeffcoldon1496 6 лет назад

      after removing the box and wood I saw the rust on top hidden then after pressure washing the hidden holes came out in the rear spring area under the grease and dirt I hate wood with the u bolts also if they used a small plate with c channel boltedthere would be no rust as bad I bought the truck cheap I got maby 1200 in it plus I got a storage box I took off. the old owner had a green house used it in the summer said the 1999 air break dt466e was rebuild for 6 k he showed me the recipts so I took a chance on the motor the problem is theirs some water in the oil. he told me the day after they got it the driver overheated it. towed it in that was it. I going to pull it tear it down once I see the motor will be ok if not I got a lot of partsi could sell.I was thinking of frame replacement also theirs a place in menter viconfab.com/truck-frame-rails-chassis-components/ they have a 50 foot long press and due truck frames any thickness. or its off to a truck junk yard most likely they will be ohio rusty this will be a lot of drilling excuse for a mag drill lol I use a steel supplier in Macedonia, OH steelsupply.us/ grate place nice people family biz I don't think there press is big enough for frames 35 foot long I know they have a new cnc one does 1 inch thers nothing like a new piece of steel I know the make the frame a A36 or grade 80 steel the oem use less I guess will see. more projects

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад

      having a frame pressed out seems like way too much work. especially with all the 4700 trucks running around. like i said i have the exact frame you have sitting here. it is not hard to slide one rail out at a time. considering the engine has been over heated and the frame is no good...it sounds like a great parts truck for something else. you can buy a running and driving 4700 with a good dt466 for around $2000- $2500 right now. i would think you will have more than that in your truck with just the cost of replacing the frame. it all comes down to preference. what your intentions are with the truck and what you want to do. i would use that truck for parts...mostly because i have several 4700's that could use some parts.

    • @jeffcoldon1496
      @jeffcoldon1496 6 лет назад

      main goal I wanted a good running motor the only way I will know that is if I do the motor my self i sort of a perfectionist. as far as the saving the truck i on the fence after seeing the frame the other day. after i get another truck will the frame be as rusty i would have to get a southern one with no box have is towed in. i don't need another box. more junk will go in to it. the cab is clean. if i deside to keep the truck you selling any frames ? replacing a frame looks like no big deal the truck will get used like the one you have once in a wile. i just need to know the motor is in good shape and dun right. i have equipment and a shop and tools to pull it and put it back in. i was even thinking removing the cab to and pull the motor that way i could paint every part of the frame.. if i make this a part truck i have an old dump we use in the yard the cab is shot another international. my main goal a nice truck with air breaks and a beaver tail bed like you made no cdl it would be handy for the every now and then need it does two things carry vehicles and have a flat bead 20 feet i can unload with a fork lift the trailer thing is getting old the one i have the wood is rotted i don't want to spent for a new one or have the epa stuff on the diesel and i don't want a beater i have to much to risk driving around a rotted truck. the winter is coming so i have some time to get working on this shortly i guess it relies on the motor if it s a bad rebuild on the cylinder sleeves or totally fried then every thing will be parts. then ill find another truck with a long frame and air breaks you know of any ? not sure were you saw 2500 dt 466 truck

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 лет назад

      many 4700's are cheap right now. i do have a good frame from a 95 dt466 4700 24' box truck. i kept it because it was in good condition and could easily be pressure washed, prepped and painted up really nice. when i build the next one, i want to use double frame and a 33,000 gvw truck. my freightliner is pretty heavy empty and the load capacity isnt as high as i want it to be. i have several trucks that i could build the new one on but i just have too many projects in front of it to start it now.

    What is the point of getting to this stage and not painting the chassis, I new you would or should I say delegate and get it done. I do believe in this video there was one person seen doing more work than the other. It looked like the narrator wanted an easier day and what's more we have no evidence of who drilled the holes in the chassis.
    Some bosses work their staff so hard I do hope their is a bonus in the pay packets this week.
    Seriously I doo think this is going to be a great dump truck when it is finished and still look forward to the day you do a project with a wrecker bed as you mentioned in the last video and you have dropped hints about it in a few videos recently
