Lithography chief friend of mine ledme to the Navy continuous service kept my E5 with obligations lots of lessons obviously to secure that right whereupon when eligible I made e6 first try. Amazing differences between the two branches, and looking back wish I would have taken advantage of the opportunities the Navy offered. The biggest surprise was the respect that a Corpsman received, especially when making 1st class. Toward the end, was offered an opportunity to be top shirt in a medical detachment with the Marines, (been through Army BCT), asked to be sent through Field school in NC, and then memory fails me as what followed, shortly thereafter separating due to personal reasons. Missed opportunity I feel.
Thanks for sharing a bit of your story! Corpsman are definitely respected throughout the Navy and even other branches from my experience. Thanks for serving doc!
Hey man, former Marine here (‘00 -‘06), I always thought the Navy corpsman were the coolest Navy ppl to be around. We used to kinda pick on the corpsman but it was always in a good way and not bad. Lol. Good times. I can see why the corpsman wanna be stationed with a Marine division. Lot of action, fun, gun shooting and stupid stuff, specially with a infantry division, lol.
For sure! I never got the opportunity to get embedded with the Marines and most marines that I know don’t like corpsman too much lol. Glad you like us that brother and thank you for watching!
Any specialties (C schools) to specialize in that would prevent/limit you to staying off a ship on the blue side? Especially for someone who doesn’t plan on being in long.
Not that I am aware. You can be assigned to any command/unit no matter your specialty. If the Navy wants you on a ship, you're going. Even greenside docs get attacked to ships. Best you can do is try to negotiate orders when it's your time to pick a new duty station
Hey Ryan, thank you for sharing your point of view. I’m in the process of joining and thinking about X-ray technician. How often are the test? And would you suggest studying some medical books before coming into the HM route if you have no knowledge of the medical field. Also, what’s other rate would you recommend that have a much higher advancement? Thank you
X-ray is good! In A school, you have 1-2 tests every week. At least that's how it was when I went through. It may be different now. You do not have to study anything medical ahead of time. Everyone, regardless of prior knowledge starts off at zero. Meaning the Navy treats everyone as a beginner. Other rates with much higher advancement are IT, PS, DC, ET, OS, EM, and MM. Some of these rates have 100 percent advancement to E4 and E5 compared to 1-2 percent for HM.
@@RyanJander Thank you for getting back to me. Are you able to save money if you get BAH while going to A school? Also, how often can your vacation get approve to see family member?
Of course you're able to save money. Especially if you get BAH. You save a lot. Taking vacation depends on your chain of command and operational requirements. As long as the mission can still get done while you're gone, your leave will likely be approved
Not gonna lie. I thought i would've gotten sent to a hospital and ended up getting sent to Camp Lejuene with an infantry marine unit (2nd LAR and then 3/2). Despite alot of veterans on here saying they liked it, for me, that crap sucked. As Corpsman were just not trained to do the stuff Marines have a general knowledge of and its tough not only trying to prove yourself as a doc, but not screw up simple stuff and have you holding up the rest of the platoon waiting on you to play catch up. Your also still accountable to Navy and BAS when running sickcall.I got chewed out so many times from Sergeants and Staff Sergeants because they dont care about you not knowing something, especially if working up for a deployment. And even though your around other Corpsman, it's a dog eat dog environment, and alot of the times, the help is not there. Most of the chiefs we had were backstabbing and cowardly. I only had one that took the time to really give me a chance to become a better corpsman. Yeah, once you get out (with an honorable hopefully) its nice to brag to others that you worked with Marines and deployed with them, but at the end of the day, it sucked. Mentally and physically! Yeah, i probably got a little bit more ribbons and bragging rights than most blue side Corpsman, but mental health wise, it will screw you up after leaving. Especially being we lost one of our corpsman on a deployment. And i was in from 2006-2010. And alot of corpsman, after that first or second deployment with Marines try to get order's to a more comfy position in the fleet. So no one really loves greenside that much lol!
I was a corpsman and I loved the green side, it is a lot of work but it was the best time of my service. Unfortunately my next duty station was onboard the USS Constellation CV-64, and the department was top heavy. I got to bust my ass and get treated like shit.

Is this true? A recruiter told me that I would have to be a Radiation Health Tech before becoming an X-Ray tech, I've heard thats false. Could you shed some light on that subject?
Excellent question. That recruiter is LYING to you! Unless something has changed, then it's a lie. Sounds like they are trying to fill a quota. I have many friends who are x-ray techs and I can verify if you'd like. As far as courses go, you only needed an advanced algebra course to get into this C school. If you don't have that, there are plenty of ways to go about getting it before you go to c school. Even if you don't go to this school after A school, you can go after you get to your first duty station. My advice is to not let the recruiter bully you. Go get what you want. Look up corpsman in LinkedIn and ask them about x Ray C school
Hi, just finding your video! I am enlisting soon & want to be in the medical field as a civilian & go to school during my time in the Navy, but I’m not too sure I want to be a HM (mainly bc of the difficulty to advance)… I’m thinking something Admin so I have nothing to demanding so that I can study for my nursing degree.. do you think it would make sense to do it this way? I have EMT certification already so I do have some patient care experience
Hi thanks for watching. I do think that your plan is smart. Being an HM is demanding and you won't advance very fast. An admin job would work well for your plan! If you want to be a nurse though, the navy has a program for that. You'll go through their nursing program and become a nurse in the Navy. Much higher rank and pay and then when you're done, you can get out and be a civilian nurse. You have some good options no matter how you decide to go about it!
The only thing (unless medical finds something that prevents you from joining) would be low test scores. You need a high enough ASVAB score in order to qualify for that job and then in A school, you'll be taking a lot of tests pertaining to being a corpsman. If you fail too many tests, they will kick you out of the program and force you into another job. So low test scores are your biggest obstacle
Hey man I'm currently in Corpsman A school is there any way I can secure a for sure spot to go FMTB and go with Infantry Marines ? Currently there is rumors going around A school that very few people are getting FMTB orders so I am a bit worried I will get stuck with orders I don't want. Any Info would help thank you and keep making videos they are very helpful !
I'm glad you find my videos helpful! First thing I would do is talk to one of your instructors one on one to let them know you want to be with a marine division. Second, make sure you put a marine division on your dream sheet (if they still do that). Third I would score as high as you can on all tests. Sometimes they high scoring ppl get to choose what they want. Now navy medicine needs HM's on ships more than ever so I'm not surprised that a lot of you aren't going with the marines. Do those 3 things and let me know. One thing you need to remember...if you do not go to FMTB and get embedded with a marine unit after A school, you will EVENTUALLY. Being on the Greenside is Sea Duty for Corpsman. All sailors have sea and shore duty and you rotate all throughout your career. So if you go to a clinic after A school, you'll be forced to go to Sea Duty after that. Either a ship or with the marines. Long story short, if you don't go green after school, you will eventually
The hours depend on your duty station. They will be different. So on shore duty at a hospital you may have a 0700-1600 workday with weekends off. On sea duty, you will be working over 10 hours per day and standing duty. Not much time off. On the greenside you may get a mix of both. Just depends on where you get stationed
You can tell the detailer (the person who chooses orders for you) that you have a preference of green or blue but ultimately, you'll go wherever the Navy needs you. The good news is, you won't be blue forever or green forever. You'll go back and forth throughout your career
They are correct. The score qualifies you for the job but there has to be an opening for it. I actually was forced into being a corpsman. I did not want it. If you truly want it, I suggest telling your recruiter that's the only job you want and don't enlist unless you get it. He or she can make it happen!
@@RyanJander oh so they can? mines acting like i should take whatever i get because it’s based on the military’s needs 🙄 like sir i’m not gettin in this shit without a HS title
It is based on the needs of the military. However, you're in a position to negotiate and get what you want. You don't have to take whatever job comes your way. If the job isn't available then tell the recruiter you'll wait until it is or go to another branch. You are under no obligation to pick a job right now.
Good question. It's based on need. Towards the end of A school, you're instructors should tell your class what C schools are available and ask who wants to go to them. They usually end up choosing people themselves though.
@RyanJander ohh man I hope I get lucky. I'm actually interested in going into C school and possibly specializing in something like X-ray tech or Biotech just purely of the ease and transitioning the skills into Civilian life after the military
@BenEnlet29 both are awesome. I wanted those as well. If you don't get them straight out of A school then remember that you can do some on the job training in those fields at your first command. Just to get some experience before you actually go to C school
@RyanJander So let's say I don't go into C school right away and I get stationed at a hospital doing something else. If I am willing to, would I be able to go to different departments and ask to shadow or just obersve to see if it's actually something I'm interested in when I do go back to C school ?
@@RyanJander i appreciate the fast response and thank you! but do you think if you could go back to the time you enlisted knowing the stuff you do now, would you still go through with HM? and if so why?
@Luigi. Good question. Knowing what I know now, no, I would not choose to be an HM. Firstly, because I do not like patient care and second, the advancement rates are terrible. I stayed at the same rank for a very long time while other rates passed me by. I would choose a rate that has much better advancement.
Your A school instructors should have no issue hooking that up for you. But if you don't go fmf directly after A school, just know you will go eventually in your career. Very rare for HMs to not go greenside
No disrespect, but you're basically saying to kiss a** to get promoted 😂? Had a corpsman come into our unit and got meritoriously primoted to E4. So, i guess it works out lol.
Hi I’m 19 and I’m graduating high school I wanted to join the navy to be a navy nurse because I always wanted to be a pediatric nurse so I wanted some advice please
@@Adore_chaa Corpsman absolutely live in the barracks but once you make E-5 you will be allowed to live off base in a house or apartment fully paid for. As far as being a nurse, you have several options. I'll paste a link here for you to look at. It goes into how to commission into the Navy's nurse corps. Also, you should talk to a navy recruiter about your options. You can get your degree before joining or get it while you're in if you enlist. Talk to a recruiter to see what the best option is for you but check out this link first. www.med.navy.mil/Accessions/Nurse-Candidate-Program/
@@RyanJander I have spoke to a recruiter and I took a practice test and everything he said I did good he told me I can go to nursing school or college while in the navy also I wanted to know if you want to be a corpsman will that be your job for sure because some videos say that you can be put in something different and recruiters lie and i scared for that because I don’t want to fight but I want to help people
He's right you can go to school for nursing while you're in the Navy. You have a lot of options. IF you choose corpsman then that won't change unless the navy thinks you aren't fit to be a corpsman. Sometimes something may disqualify you but this is rare I think. Now the Navy can really do anything they want with you. If they want to change your rate then they can. This is also rare. Usually there is something that causes them to switch you. I would not worry about that. There is a small chance that you will be sent somewhere to fight as a corpsman. They get embedded into marine units and then act as combat medics. Right now there isn't much going on so you may deploy with Marines but chances are, you'll never see any fighting.

What do you do now?
Right now, I do IT work for the government. It's a lot more interesting to me than the medical field. I enjoy my life a lot more these days.
How did you obtain that job? What was you proof of experience?
@@Mande____ I had experience from the Navy. I put all of it on my resume. I also obtained a handful of IT certifications during the height of Covid.
Yo at A school can you screen for SARC or hm atf
Sorry for the late reply but yes you can
is there a asvab score you have to atleast get to be able to enlist as a corpsman?
Yes. You need a higher score than most although, I don't know what it is.
How can I be a fmf corpsman
Your A school instructors should have no issue hooking that up for you. But if you don't go fmf directly after A school, just know you will go eventually in your career. Very rare for HMs to not go greenside
@@RyanJander so when I enlist at Meps I chose the rate hospitals corpmans ?and should be fine ?
If you qualified for that rate AND it's available, then yes
No disrespect, but you're basically saying to kiss a** to get promoted 😂? Had a corpsman come into our unit and got meritoriously primoted to E4. So, i guess it works out lol.
How much lumpia did he sell?
How are you able to have a beard?
I'm not in the Navy anymore so I have one BUT, the navy recently changed their regulations and are now allowing sailors to have beards again
Hi I’m 19 and I’m graduating high school I wanted to join the navy to be a navy nurse because I always wanted to be a pediatric nurse so I wanted some advice please
I also want to know do corpsman live in the barracks as well
@@Adore_chaa Corpsman absolutely live in the barracks but once you make E-5 you will be allowed to live off base in a house or apartment fully paid for.

@@RyanJander okayyy thank youu so much so do you think corpsman will be best for me if I want to help and take care others or do you think i should look in to other options
IYAOYAS
Good to go
DO.NOT JOIN THE NAVY WITHOUT A GUARANTEED A SCHOOL!!!!
That is great advice
You stated that you didn't like patient care. Then why the hell did you choose Hospital Corpsman?
I didn't. It was chosen for me in basic training. I was selected for it...tried like hell to change my rate in A school.
