As a Peruvian it makes me so happy to see that you did a realistic portrait of the hairstyles of my culture. I’ll try to apply one of this when my hair gets longer ✌🏼
"Braids aren't just for women." I'm so grateful you said that. I work in an equestrian centre and children who come on field trip are often pretty shocked when they see braids on stallions and geldings because, I'm quoting, "Braids are for girls". So I need to explain them that men wore braids (and still do) in many countries for practical reasons and aesthetics. Not to mention long hair is an attribute of power in numerous cultures. But I'm still quite disappointed to observe so many people are still believing that.
Why do you say that as though seeing European historical looks is a problem? I like seeing European looks as well. My family is from South America. Very mixed culture.
90sNOSTALGIA also its not standards of beauty its just showing european styles. She is european so of course she will show european ones. I dont see any blacks doing european ones
I am loving your historical hair tutorials and personally I really like the hairstyles based on mummies. Artists don't always realistically portray their subjects' hair, and you run the risk of a hairstyle in artwork being unachievable in real life. Mummy hair on the other hand is constrained by the rules of physics.
As an argentinian i can confirm that people still to this day do the first braid style in Chile and in here. It's pretty common to see the hairstyle amongside descendents of natives and it's also common a single braid done lower on the back. Just in case anyone was wondering.
Inu The Changa I Think it is pretty universal. The particular style is not that common here in Scandinavia, but You do see it every now and Then (mainly on children and people trying to look like milk maids) but the english braiding technice (or simple braiding technice) is one of the very first thing children from many modern cultures learn to do when it comes to hairstyle.
@@katrinepetersen2566 I'm half mapuche and I can tell you, yes it is pretty universal, but in the native South American culture braids are particularly strong, you won't see any hairstyle other than two braids, one down the back, a ponytail or just straight up loose, that's it nothing else not even a bun (I'm talking day to day bases)
+Rosie Brown When it comes to historical hairstyles yes, they do. I was talking more on a day to day basis on the native culture now, as far as I know (and I'm only familiar with the South Andean part) they don't use buns just for practical purposes, usually their hair is way too thick and long for them to do buns. This doesn't mean they couldn't wear them thought. Don't take this as an expert speaking, I'm just passing on what I've learnt from my grandma and watching kinda from the outside.
WOW you might be the first and only braid tutorial creator to mention the Chinchorro people, I am loving it. Thank you so much for this video, amazing 😄😄 I might try the inca lady 🙆

I remember the first time I heard about research into hair and the woman who tried to recreate Roman hairstyles. It was the first time I heard about sewing the hair and braids instead of pins. That was an eyeopener for me regarding historical hair. :P
I'm loving this series you've got going! I feel like I learn both about history at the same time I learn about new hairstyles. For a future vid, I'd love to see the hairstyles of Japan, China, or Korea, since those cultures tended to go for very ornate hairstyles, and you've got a talent for breaking down complicated styles into easy step-by-step instructions.
As an anthropology student I gotta say I so appreciate all of the information you add to your videos. Your warnings for the mummies is so nice to see. Not everyone in this field considers the sensitivity of a dead body to some religions. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for looking towards South America! I am from Colombia and I feel that most people just ignore the whole continent altogether. Also, it is cool to try braids that have at least a vague connection to me

I've been wearing my curly hair like that Peruvian style for about 10 years. I'm no longer accepting the label of "lazy" and am now calling myself "historically appreciative."
Braids have always played an important part of any Venezuelan girl XD the mixture of native braids and African braid hair stiles are very common specially at the beach. When i was 10 you could see rows and rows of girls getting their hair braided. This is so nice, love your vids. I'm so happy to see loads of latin american brothers and sisters feeling represented! I am from argentina myself and seeing somebody speaking about south america in such a respectful and educated way really made me happy!
I think historical hairstyling videos are absolutely fascinating, so thanks for adding to the topic! The little history snippets you gave were awesome. I also applaud you for the mummy timestamps at the beginning. I think people who get up in arms about trigger warnings don't realize how small and easy they actually are, just a courteous heads up that something potentially unpleasant is coming. Great video!
I´m so happy to see the Chinchorro in your video, I´m chilean, and i wish they would be more talked about, cause they were really an interesting culture.
You do such a great job with these. You do so much research and I really appreciate the work you put into it! Thank you for another excellent video! And also for giving major shout outs to non European cultures and hair types, which you do in such a sensitive and lovely way.
This video was originally longer with a few more that eventually got cut for time's sake, but the ones I cut were especially unsettling to me because they're so well preserved, that they just look like they fell asleep. That undercuts the psychological distance you kinda need in order to deal with dead bodies. Look up the Children of Llullaillaco.
@@silvousplaits I don't find mummies unsettling at all. The people are dead whether we have their bodies to study or not. We've learned so much about ancient cultures because we have mummies to study - in a way it gives us an opportunity not only to learn about their cultures but appreciate them as well. Think how many cultures have been lost to the ages because they left nothing behind! Being able to study mummies, especially with the newer techniques that allow scientists to take DNA and use hair samples to discover what they are, etc. helps us learn so much more about a culture than we would otherwise know. And isn't that what a lot of these cultures wanted, what a lot of people want - to be remembered? The children you're talking about, for instance, they were killed whether we like it or not, whether we ignore them or not, even if their bodies had decayed over time and not mummified, they still would have been killed. By studying them, we can learn more about their lives, their society and even respect and feel sad about the way they were treated at the end of their lives. I don't think it would have been unsettling to show the Maiden and how her hair was braided - it would have been honoring her, remembering her. We aren't stamping our approval on what her people did to her when we remember her - of course we think it was terrible. But nothing we do now can change what they did, so why not remember her?
I always loved braids! No matter the culture. Since childhood my favorite hairstyles involve braiding. Now that I have very long hair again I'm going to try some of these ancient styles. Thanks for such an interesting video!

@@andream.2558Huh?! Sorry, first of all, I am not American. Not at all. And nobody has taught me that. It's just pure logic. The difference between our current planetary civilisation and the ones existing millennia ago is so obvious that it doesn't even worth the discussion.

I don't often comment on RUclips videos, but I have worked with Chiribaya and Chinchorro mummies/human remains. One other surprising hairstyle I also have seen is "microbraids" all over the head, which are then sometimes braided or gathered into even more elaborate hairstyles. I loved this video, and as an bioarchaeologist, think this is a much under-studied area of prehistory! Thank you for sharing your talent/research!
Thank you so much for another great historically accurate video! I love the mummies personally and find all the history fascinating. Thank you for making another historical video and please keep them coming!! Let keep the ancient hairstyles alive!

These are so interesting! I love the history and the non-European locations! There's so much out there to learn! Thanks for doing such a great job, girl!
Hi! I've seen your video about female Viking hairstyles and I loved it. I am just wondering if it could be possible to make a video about middle eastern/Arabic hairstyles? I'm half Danish half Jordanian and I now know how half of my ancestors wore their hair, and I'd just love to know how the other half did. Also the braids in this video are beautiful
I agree. I haven’t found a single video or article on ancient middle eastern hairstyles other than Egyptian, which are usually just saying that Egyptians wore wigs. It’d be awesome to see hairstyles no ones addressed before!
I´m from Nicaragua and our natives used the first style adding colorful lace´s and flowers, nowadays this is something pretty common on little girls. I really liked you video!
I know it must be hard to choose a less trendy topic to cover and receive less views/attention for so much work, but I really appreciate this kind of cool and fun historical education/coverage on topics that aren't 'European/western' fashion. Thank you for doing it.
Thank you for sharing and bringing these ancient, mumified hair styles back to life. It's fascinating. And a lot of these are lovely looking too. I also really appreciate that you put time into researching and giving us context. Good job.
I was just visiting Brazil last month! Beautiful country :) I don't do much for curly hair right now because I don't have curly hair myself and it's hard to get other models to come be in a video for me. If there comes a video I really want to do though for curly hair I'll try to make it work.
Depending on how curly your hair is you can do pretty much any up style or braids. It may not look 100% exactly like the style on straight hair but it will work.Curly myself but never let it stop me from trying a style.
Yes! I love historical hair! I love Janet Stephens' work, but have never seem her touch on these styles! Fascinating! I'll have to wear some braids tomorrow. ❤
She's an actual archeologist, so she has a field of history she specializes in. I'm an academic in a completely different discipline so I feel less inhibited to take a wack at historical things I know nothing about ;)
Your creation and posting of this was very timely! After watching your last video, I was watching other peoples videos of doing historical American styles. Thanks!
The difficulty with that is there is not much of a record of what the styles were actually like, beyond basic descriptions from the Romans or some such. Will have to put in a lot more work before a video like that could be made.
Silvousplaits either way, I’m still looking forward to future ancient hairstyle videos! They’re so interesting and put together, so any ancient civilization would be fascinating.
I love the mummy-based examples you provide. Those mummies give you a glimpse into a moment in time that we will never see again. It might be grisly in some cases, but it is still a part of the world's history, and it is beautiful to see a part of them being brought back to life.
Thank you for this video. The Americas do not often get as much attention, regarding archaeology, as do European countries/civilizations. Very refreshing.
I'd love to see a tutorial of Artemisia Gentileschis artist turban hair, she often has the same hairstyle in her self - portraits. (Early 1600's female artist hairstyle)
this is super cool! most of the historical hairstyle stuff i see is so focused on like, the romans and greeks and maybe vikings or victorians. its rad as hell that youre looking globally!
Maybe Egyptian look in the next video? I know you said no more mummies, but would love to see what you can find with the Egyptian culture I love your videos by the way!!
Most of them (men and women) had completely shaved heads, exept sometimes, for a small patch that was tied into a ponytail. This was to prevent head lice. That is why wigs (with the familiar long-bob hairstyle) were common.
hey as a male with long hair i loved this video. i have hispanic/native roots. yes skulls/mummies are creepy. i ask you not to stop because you do so well presenting the positive side. the beauty of why they took the time to save the hair.
Omg this video is the best resource I’ve found for any kind of hairstyling around central and South America 😭😭 thank you so much I would absolutely love to see one focused on Central America too, because that’s specifically what I was looking for and I haven’t been able to find very much. I think it was nice of you to show different hairstyles from different cultures, and points in time.
Thank you for this video.
I hope you are well.☺
That brutally sacrificed women probably couldn't have imagined that she'll be honored thousands of years later because of her hairstyle
I wonder if she'd be like "oh cool" or "wtf, my face was smashed in and you only care about my hair?"
We'd be like gods for her so she'd be honoured.
@@eeaotly you really think my ancestors thought yours were gods? You probably learned that in the American public schools lmfao
@@andream.2558Huh?! Sorry, first of all, I am not American. Not at all. And nobody has taught me that. It's just pure logic. The difference between our current planetary civilisation and the ones existing millennia ago is so obvious that it doesn't even worth the discussion.
@@eeaotly oh god so you do view the world with a Eurocentric lense, and it shows. So you think that because we didn’t have smelly castles infested with rats and poop everywhere we were not civilized? So because our civilization didn’t look like yours and your religion we weren’t civilized. Okay you’re right, there’s nothing to discuss here, move along.
I adore the mummies! If there are more mummies out there with discernible hair styles, I'd love to see more videos! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for another great historically accurate video! I love the mummies personally and find all the history fascinating. Thank you for making another historical video and please keep them coming!! Let keep the ancient hairstyles alive!
i love these historical hairstyle videos- such a cool way to see the ancient world. like these people arent just statistics, they had preferences and styles... idk its a nice glimpse into daily life!
These are so interesting! I love the history and the non-European locations! There's so much out there to learn! Thanks for doing such a great job, girl!
I absolutely adore your historical braiding guides! Such a unique niche of videos, I always look forward to them.
I've got a chrome window going with 25 tabs on ancient Syrian hair, so stay tuned...
Egypt is in Africa. That’s why they wore wigs....curly Afro hair
Thank you for doing it.
the first hairstyle is my everyday look it's been that since I was a kid
Thank you for representation and historically accurate hairstyles. WELL DONE! Thank you for shedding light on our beautiful culture.
Thank you for sharing and bringing these ancient, mumified hair styles back to life. It's fascinating. And a lot of these are lovely looking too. I also really appreciate that you put time into researching and giving us context. Good job.
I love these historical hairstyle videos! I'm excited that you'll be looking at historical hair styles across the world.
Hi, I'm from Brazil and I love your hairstyles, could you do any of them exclusively for curly hair?
I was just visiting Brazil last month! Beautiful country :) I don't do much for curly hair right now because I don't have curly hair myself and it's hard to get other models to come be in a video for me. If there comes a video I really want to do though for curly hair I'll try to make it work.
Depending on how curly your hair is you can do pretty much any up style or braids. It may not look 100% exactly like the style on straight hair but it will work.Curly myself but never let it stop me from trying a style.
@@silvousplaits I would absolutely 100% let you perform historical magic on my curly hair.
I don't know if you saw it, but she did a video on Greek hairstyles - they are all better for gloriously curly locks!
@@silvousplaits bb
I love how much effort you out in each video :)
Oh my god! I'm so happy you made a video about South America! Those are awesome.
Much love from Brazil xx
Thanks!
I love the research and educational aspects of your videos like this!
...still hoping for ancient Celtic hairstyles!
It might be grisly in some cases, but it is still a part of the world's history, and it is beautiful to see a part of them being brought back to life.
i've always loved your videos but historical ones are always the best. I can tell you do your research and i like that.
I love the history of these. So fascinating and cool to see how well some of those bodies were preserved. Plus I love a hair tutorial from you 😬
I'm from Argentina and I didn't know a lot about these cultures! So amazing, great video
I love these historical videos. Well researched, fun to watch and copy
Maybe Egyptian look in the next video? I know you said no more mummies, but would love to see what you can find with the Egyptian culture
I love your videos by the way!!
Egyptians usually wore wigs. If she found something that worked though it would be a good idea.
Also Egyptians had a completely different hair texture, so it would probably be pretty difficult. Maybe she could have a guest and show how to?
Most of them (men and women) had completely shaved heads, exept sometimes, for a small patch that was tied into a ponytail. This was to prevent head lice. That is why wigs (with the familiar long-bob hairstyle) were common.
I'm pretty sure they were non sub saharan african, so that would make their hair texture the same as hers.
It's impossible because she doesn't have kinky hair, it will look tacky and ugly
Love your historical braids vids! Thank you for granting respect and life again into those who dawned these plaits.😊❤❤❤
hey as a male with long hair i loved this video. i have hispanic/native roots. yes skulls/mummies are creepy. i ask you not to stop because you do so well presenting the positive side. the beauty of why they took the time to save the hair.
I've never been able to do a top knot bun! Can't wait to try this one!!!! I'm also definitely trying style number three!
can you do some african hair styles next
She can also invite somebody with 4'th type od hair, characteristic for ppl from Africa, it could be nice video
Omg this video is the best resource I’ve found for any kind of hairstyling around central and South America 😭😭 thank you so much
I would absolutely love to see one focused on Central America too, because that’s specifically what I was looking for and I haven’t been able to find very much. This was still incredibly informative and helpful though
I love these hairstyles! Thank you for making the video. For a next one, maybe Grecian or Japanese hairstyles?
I love these ancient hairstyle. Its really inspiring and interesting to see how different cultures braided there hair so long ago and, that we actually still use the same braiding techniques. Thanks for doing these tutorials. I will definitely try these styles. I am looking forward to seeing you're next video.
As a person born and raised in Ilo,where the Chiribayas used to take place and also where my family have lived for many years, I wanna thank you for portraying the culture in your video. Not even in Peruvian media or general knowledge the Chiribaya culture is usually acknowledge. I guess because they're overshadowed by other cultures. But I just wanna say thank you!!! Also, it would be super cool if you could check out some incan mummies with micro braids, similar to box braiding, I found it super interesting
I love your tutorials. And your historical series are awesome with pretty interesting details, lots of background work. Thank you very much!!
Just showed my husband the 6 braids one and he loves it!
My hair is curly and just an ince or so from the top of my bum. Thanks to your channel I can have my hair up and nice in ways other then what I'm used to doing.Makes for a nice change of pace.
Thank you so much for this, I appreciate you for finding info on all these cultures, my indigenous culture was sadly whipped out completely buy the Spaniards they are officially extinct and my people doesn’t know almost anything about our culture and indigenous traditions because the Spanish forced their religion onto us. We I was looking info to learn more about my ancestry and I am so touched that you did this😌
I love these historical tutorials! Have you thought about doing any based on Asian or African historical styles?
Maybe you can do some more Native American hairstyles? I feel like they’re pretty neglected on RUclips hairstyle channels... just to see something different. Love love love this video
ruclips.net/video/xAYj5MNy7e4/видео.html This isn't a hairstyle channel, but here's one of a woman explaining and demonstrating the Hopi squash blossom.
Indigenous South American's *ARE* Native American though.... 😑
These are Native American hairstyles...
These are native American/indigenous/pueblos originarios hairstyles please get a book

I loved this video! Been looking for South American braids! Men and woman styles!
Amazing work!! You are such an inspiration for us guys that have and love long hair. Please please continue to do more historical hair!! Thanks. :)
I love your hair, it's so beautiful
Egypt hairstyles or some native northen american hairstyles please
She is doing Native American...like literally right now.
South America is in the America's too!
Julia Snyder better?
I ADORE, these classic hairstyles videos, AMAZING!!!
OH YESSSSS, my continent
Would love to try it out if I can find enough references!
I don't like looking at the mummies, but I do find the history surrounding them fascinating. I also love that these styles are mostly based around three strand braids. I have trouble manipulating the other braid styles without losing the style into a random tangle.... Thank you for sharing your research and tutorials.
I love this channel!!! I love the history behind it
Red hairs, green eyes, stylish and an archeology fan... It's official: I'm in love.
I love how u explain some history with it and etc ❤️
I really enjoy the historical aspect of this as well as watching how the styles are done.
I just came across your channel, and I have to say that I am very interested in those historical hairstyles you've been doing! I would love to see something from Asia and Africa next!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing this historical braids, it was very interesting and I will try some of them for sure.
im a man with long hair and i loved this video!! i would usually do 2 plaits on each side and roll them across my head, kinda like a smaller milkmaid hairstyle
we had to do our presentation on maya in history class today and after that learned a bit more about the invasion of the inka and aztec folks by spanish explorers. coincidence that it was on the day you upload this video with an incan hairstyle? who knows :)
Too bad the presentation wasn't a day later so you could have dressed up your hair for it ;)
@@silvousplaits i have short hair so i wouldn't have been able to, but one of my friends I've done the presentation with has long enough hair i think
Thank u for shaing this because as a Peruvian I was so shocked that I couldn't find any content made by Peruvian women. Its sad to see that because of colonization we have to learn from the European lens. Not a knock on u obvi, (grateful u did this video) but I've been on the internet for hours and I wish someone from Indiginous decent was making videos too.
