I miss my long hair.... I cut it all off for charity in June and I still try and sweep it back or keep brushing. I think I'm here because of withdrawal

I wanted to thank you so much for this. I went to a wedding tonight and I used this style. I embellished it with some crystal/pearl hair pins for a bit of bling and it was perfect. I have wavy/curly hair that normally fights any restraint. After 4 hours of heat, humidity and dancing it looked as great as it did when the evening began.
This is why updos were the thing for looking good all day. Now you're expected to drench your freshly styled hair in all the products for it to last a two-hour party and it does barely.
I am anxious to see any photo of this (which probably will never happen).

Yep, I wear my hairdos for 3 to 4 days on end, getting progressively unkempt and sloppy as the days go by.

Same! It’s why I go to bed with a satin scarf, a bonnet and have a silk pillow case. Saves time the next day. Before I discovered this method I was indeed a bit swamp haggish 😂
Also known as yesterday’s braids, or occasionally the braids I did two days ago, if I was a bit lazy yesterday.
I took a theatrical make-up class, and for our "free reign" project (whatever we wanted to do), I made myself up to be Mina Harker from _Dracula_ after she got bitten. I covered my face in light foundation, made prosthetic bite marks on my neck, and even the burn on her forehead from the Host. My professor told me that I needed to do a hairstyle as well, so I used this one. My hair is on the shorter side, so I _did_ need to use half a ton of hairpins, but it did the trick. Thank you for the tutorial. My professor loved the hairstyle, and I got an A on the assignment.

I can't believe I thought I was the only one being in love with the Victorian and Edwardian eras. As a girl who lives with a super modern family who thinks I'm always too fancy when wearing long dresses, this is super relatable! "You are a respectable woman of the wrong century", I never related to anything as much as this!
Thank you so much for this! Due to my recent medical treatments, my hair is now short, and thinning alarmingly. This is after a lifetime of longer than waist length hair. I don't care if other people know my hair is thinning, but seeing vast tracts of scalp in the mirror upsets /me/. This video gave me another attractive style to wear that doesn't show a superhighway of scalp :)

Single plait movements are called 'iterations' ie. one iteration of the plait, two iterations of the plait etc.

Granted, I know my grandmother didn’t live during Edwardian times, but seeing Bobby pins, I’m reminded of the time she told me, “a lady never allows her pins to show!” as if my bra straps were showing. I wish I had the patience for this.

@@bernadettebanner how often do you have to trim the ends? Splitting ends have been bothering me a lot since my hair reached waist-length.
@@sunnyhill7919 Brushing the proverbial 100 strokes helps the split ends. Your hair has natural oils that condition your hair. A strand of hair is hollow, like a straw, and brushing it with a fuller brush (not a sparse "pokey, blowdrying type brush") massages the oils down the hair inside and out.
Your diet also affects your hair. It is always amazing to me how a change in diet can affect the whole length of the hair, not just the new growth.
Try not to wash your hair more often than every 3rd or 4th day, preferably once a week, but having the extra oils won't help as much unless you brush it everyday. Brushing isn't just for removing knots and smoothing the hair - it is really good for it and your scalp. :) It is very relaxing to do it just before bed, then braid it in a loose braid to keep it safe and untangled.
If you don't already do these things, and decide to start them, you'll have to let me know the result. :)

Fellow long hair person:
- morrocon oil ends after every shower when hair is wet
- Aussie Shampoo moist/any 'moisture rescue' type shampoo (shop around; find your holy grail)
- trim after winter/early spring (next week), trim after finishing holidays (no more chlorine/sea water damage) so late summer/Autumn; if wanted inbetween go for it
- let it get horrifically stays there greasy once a month and brush the oils down; I like to try to pull off that edgy French plait look and wear it all day. My life is also not together so I'm also rocking a I woke up like this greasy "slick" pony once a week tbh (disadvantage of Aussie Shampoo tbh)
- rarely use heat on it (I have really thick hair so I usually cba so that works in my favour.) Big fan of heartless curls if they dry right

I garden, a lot! Between shampoos I rinse the dust and perspiration out of my hair, put conditioner on, let it set for awhile, then rinse out with lukewarm water. I then put leave in conditioner on the tips and use one of those hinged clips some my hair drys naturally.

I have to agree; I couldn't guess her age if I wanted to. Elvish, I should say . . a unknown daughter of Elrond Halfeleven perhaps? a cousin of Luthien Tinuviel maybe? Most certainly Noldorian (when I first saw her hair I actually thought of Edith Tolkien.)
I feel like she was born in the proper century, though; otherwise, we wouldn't get to watch her tutorials because they wouldn't exist!

For those of us with thinner and wimpier hair, a good idea is to slightly back comb any sections you want to swoop/puff, along with a spritz of hairspray. The ratting gives pins something to bury themselves in and grip to, as well as making more of what you've got.
Another tip for extra grip and body is to have day-old (not freshly washed and slippery silky clean) hair. I like to dust a light sprinkling of body powder on my hands and schwoosh that through my hair and scalp to help control any oily look, and it also seems to give more body.
You can also make your own hair rats (I don't know why they are called that), with the hairs from your brush (as mentioned briefly in the video) - ball them up unto small mats and then hide them under your natural hair. They will match, being the same color, and add volume without the risk of damaging your own hair by backcombing. It is a legitimately historical way of adding volume to hair, and works well!
I still have no clue why I like the idea of padding more than teasing, its not like i do either of those things. Maybe because brushing out the tease and as a result having even less hair seems almost as ironic as getting in dept to have an education youll never need
@@taritangeo4948 FWIW, I think a light back combing isn't necessarily damaging to your hair, and brushing it out I don't believe I lose more hairs than when I brush my hair otherwise. Maybe the problem comes when hair is severely, thickly ratted and perhaps has a tendency to grip or tangle naturally. My hair type is fine and slippery, and my problem is always trying to gain grip rather than trying to smooth tangles.
@@Marialla. I found swapping to solid shampoo with no nasties and the pfthalate etc free conditioner helpful. My hair would drop out of any clip or style within minutes when I was using regular shampoo and conditioner. It takes a month or so before your hair feels good but after that it is much better and doesn't need anywhere near as much washing.
Also not the most recommended but if your hair hates you enough to never do what you want, you can always kill it a little with hair dye or bleach and I've found it has helped a little bit with keeping it in place rather than always falling out and being a wild untamable monster.
As for the back part with the braid, any suggestions for what to do there? My hair is a bit longer than shoulder length but it's so thin that even a full braid is thinner than 2 finger widths. So a partial braid will hide nothing and look like a rat tail.
um for anyone with shorter hair who wants to do this, just skip the braid part and make a regular bun. True it doesn't have the same spirally effect, but it works.

Lol, my hair goes into Swamp Hag style halfway through the day AND when I first wake up. At least it no longer knots like it's auditioning to become macrame. 🤣🤣 Thank goodness for finally finding the right shampoo for my hair! XD
You seriously bring classic style and beauty that this age unfortunately has forgotten. Keep history alive.
If you start by sectioning out your braid piece and french braiding it (or just starting the braid a little higher) you could probably use fewer pins because you could then pin directly onto the braid which would create a strong base that wouldn't move, thus the pins could grip better.
There's a woman on youtube who recreates ancient hairstyles, she calls these foundation or anchor braids.
You're probably thinking of Janet Stephens? This braid is just a regular three strand English braid, not a French braid. It would be tricky to frech this as it would require using the ends from the pomp, which would likely pull the puff back down. A classic English braid starts lower and wouldn't pull so much on the front strands.
french braiding every day? hell no
You don’t really need a proper French braid - just pull the front bits that will be ‘puffed’ out of the way and grab a hunk mid-crown ish and braid that down to the nape of your neck, leaving the rest of the length unbraided. Then do your puffs pining into the braid you’ve created. Gather the end of your ‘foundation’ braid in with all the rest to be plaited and braid all the length together as shown, then pin it up. The foundation braid would end up completely hidden most likely, and secured in the rest of the braiding.
@@taritangeo4948 I had a coworker who could whip hers up in less then 5 minutes running out the door! All I could do was gawk because I have very curly frizzy hair that just won't take down to braid a French braid.

Aahhh...if only i still had my once youthful long luscious locks...I am now old and grey. Still interesting to see how others did theirs and my grandmother did exactly as you suggest...gathered the stray strands from her brush to give her bun more padding :-) I still have her brush

@@shevaunhandley1543 agreed. It actually seems perfect for an older woman. All that floofing gives the appearance of having a lot more volume, and the braid bun covers the crown of the head right where you're likely to get a bald spot! If you need even more volume, give yourself rag curls overnight and then brush them out in the morning. That will give you the volume you need, no problem.
I think this could still look really good with grey hair! It would look very wise and mature, so it's worth a shot!

I'm 66 my hair comes to my thighs and is going grey I've always had long hair when young I wore it in natural ringlets much to disgust of my friends I only had to have a strand brushed around my mum's finger to get ringlets while they had to sleep with a headfull of rags.
I wear my hair in buns most days depending on how I feel is how elaborate the style gets.
Would I cut it ? I don't think so but as long as it looks ok and is in decent condition long it stays

The glasses were the perfect touch! When my hair was your length I used to start off with a similar swoop on both sides but then carried on into two french plaits and then wrap the plaits round each other in a figure eight at the nape of the neck. This worked really well on my wedding day when I could tuck the comb of my veil into it, keeping every thing secure...oh happy days

This hairstyle is absolutely lovely. I work in a very male dominated industry (professional cook) and have to wear my hair up constantly. This helps me feel soft and feminine, not worry about wispy bits flying out, is gentler on tension headaches, and makes me happy while still being practical. Thank you so much!!
I have finally found someone that also has very long hair to which has a hair tutorial that works for me. I love this so much and plan to wear it every day. (I really don't know what else to do with my hair at this point it's so long).
I've done it before and is quite sturdy. Lasted a couple of days for me.
Well, I have a purple mohawk (not very historical), so I will never be able to do this. So I guess it is a bit like the potato skin-thing. But girl, I really LOVE your sense of humor and your dry way to comment your videos!

I love "How To Be a Victorian"--it's one of only five books from home that now grace my university bookshelf. Truly a wonderful, fascinating, quite simple read for the beginner historian/experimental archaeologist/reenactor, and it never really loses usefulness as you go deeper, either.
I know this video is a year old but I'm really glad its here! I used this style today and while I don't have hair as long as yours it turned out better than I expected. Due to my own inability to hair.. I thought I'd get caught up on the braiding, but I did it! Thank you for the how-to video and the inspiration to actually try it!
Bernadette, I tried doing your hairstyle for myself today. It was so fun to try! Results were... variable. My hair is only about down to my underarms, not my waist like yours, plus I am older so my hair is fine, frazzled, thinning, and very much tends to let any hairstyle fall out or slip away in no time. But I persisted. What I had going for me was that my hair hasn't been washed in a few days, and I know that by fluffing some powder through it I gain a little grip and volume that my clean hair doesn't have.
I used a little backcombing on every section to help give it some life, and that worked pretty well. Plus I sprayed every section with hairspray on both sides before ratting and that helped too. My shorter hair wouldn't make a pretty braid or bun like yours, but I added a brown plastic hair pouf and rolled the hair over that to make a sort of bun up on the top of my head. Then I had a wonky looking section, so I thought obviously that's exactly where I need to clip in a large flower or something. The overall effect is not bad, I think!
Not sure how historically accurate it is for any period, but it does feel like an education. In a world where a decorous lady would be sure to wash her hair "at least twice a month", styles had to work hard to make dirty hair look presentable. I do feel somewhat like a gracious lady in all this pouffy hair! Thank you for helping me learn how they achieved the all-over head poufs so popular in Edwardian pictures. This is the first time I've been able to create anything even close to that style.
Hair wasn't considered dirty if it was well brushed. They brushed their clothes too, to clean them in between washings.
Due to an illness and hospitalization, I wasn't able to wash my hair for 6 months. Yuck! When I was finally able to get it washed, I still wasn't able to wash it again for another couple months, but after that initial 6 month shock, it stayed clean feeling for about a month!
I still can't get my hair washed as often as I would like, but it doesn't look dirty/oily till after that one month mark, as long as it gets brushed everyday. Your scalp seems to adjust the amount of oil it makes to how often you wash those oils out.
I think it is cool you got to put your hair up. I wish youtube still let you post pics!

for less frizz, go for a moisturizing shampoo. I use a coconut oil shampoo which keeps my hair minimally frizzy even in air-conditioning. My hair is also of the type which only sticks to itself, and pins are just about the only thing guaranteed to stay in. Crossing pins over each other helps them stay in better too.
I found that spritzing with a little bit of the leave-in type of conditioner helped my hairstyles stay in place. You can also use a little of the conditioning gel or mousse

Thank you SOOO much for this. I have watched many updo hair tutorials, all with no success. Because they require curling irons or precise braiding or just in general very talented hands, which I do not have. I have fine waist long hair which I've worn in a bun every day for the past five years. I felt no pressure when trying to recreate this hairstyle. Thanks for saying it doesn't have to be perfect. Now I have two hairstyles I can do with confidence.

Thank you. I have hip length, fine and wavy hair. With multiple layers. My morning hair looks just like what yours. Braid all fuzzy and top out of braid. It's a lot harder than ppl think to style it. I usually do a braid and roll it to a bun...but that looks a little to amish school matron for me. Your way looks a lot more simple than others I have seen and fits my style. Thank you again

Its actually not too bad to do with medium length hair!! I have hair down to my bust and I was able to do it, the bun part just wasnt as welll put together but it was doable!

Hi Bernadette :) my German great-grandmother used to wear her hair like this. She had completely white hair and she would create volume on sides and a bun in the centre. For securing hair on the sides, she would use combs to hold the hair into place. She had four ivory ones for each side. She had metal ones with different ornaments too. As you demonstrated, she'd twist the hair and insert the comb. Also, for her bun, she had two bone pins to secure. Lastly, to prevent flyaways, she would use a hairnet on top of her bun. We would always play with her hairnets and she used to get really mad with us :D her method would maybe save you from 500 pins you have to use in your hair also they are more gentle on the strands.
The extra hair is called a "rat" I believe!

Ruth Goodman! Have you watched all the '*insert era here* Farm' series? The 'Tales from the Green Valley', 'Secrets of the Castle' and 'Full Steam Ahead' series are of course also wonderful.
I have! They are amongst my most favorite tv series ever :D I'm not sure I've seen Secrets of the Castle or Full Steam Ahead though - I'll have to check those out (thank you).

My hair are a little longer than yours, but there are very heavy and slippy so I'm not sure this would actually hold on my head, but I'll definitivemy give it a shot (when all the small braids I had fun doing a few days ago will be too messy to keep... Long hair are just amazing : so many possible hairstyles ! ) !
try combs rather than pins ... they may give a firmer hold for you and smaller multiple braids?
I never tried combs, but that's a great idea ! (just need to find some now ^^). I tought about multiple braids, I thinks it's the best solution, or no braid at all, just a messy twisted bun maybe ! Thanks for the ideas !

I'm finally going to do it: I'm going to try this hair style. Haha. My hair has never been quite long enough to do this. I always get my hair cut into layers and to where it falls no more than an inch past my shoulders, so it almost never is quite long enough for this style. But now it is. And soon, I'm going to try this. I also might try using curlers. lol
YES!!! I just straightened my hair for the first time and it’s an unruly length and this hairstyle is perfect for an attractive and still sophisticated way to keep it up. Going to try ASAP. I can’t wait to feel like Marie Curie or some other old timey female scientist. At least that’s the aesthetic I’m going for.....ugh now I want to make a bunch of female researcher inspired historic clothing! (THEY EXISTED! Many went to Europe where there was less of a stigma against it in the 19th and 20th century one of my favorites was Maria Sibylla but she was 17th and 18th century) But anyway ugh you did this to me! Haha!

I have a homemade rat from a scarf that I use under my poofy do. I shaped a metal coat hanger (not historically accurate) into a circlet around the crown of my head then wrapped 2 long scarves around that form shaping the front about half the thickness of the back. Any way, your hair style is quite lovely and looks very pretty on you. Also, I have recently discovered your channel and have fallen in love with you sewing style. So much, in fact, that I have convinced my mother (a very accomplished seamstress) to undertake our own historical sewing projects.

My grandmother (born in 1886) did her hair something like this. I remember watching her put it up when I was about 13.
I love this look it’s so perfectly pretty and practical! I started doing my hair this way for work (I’m a sever) and it’s cute and stays put for 10 hours of running around like a madwomen!

It's a little hard to tell what kind of pins you're using in the video, but have you ever tried U-pins for the holding the braided parts of it in place? It takes a bit of practice to use them properly, because you have to do sort of a sewing motion (very appropriate for this channel!) where you put the pin through your hair pointing away from your head, and then reverse it and tuck it into your hair, but I find them way easier and more secure than bobby pins, and you don't need nearly as many of them. I personally recommend the brand Soft 'n Style (you can get them on Amazon), but you can also get very nice stainless steel ones made by/for the Amish community, or you can find antique ones pretty regularly if you know what you're looking for. Love the channel, thanks so much for sharing this style!
I've tried U pins before and I agree they work perfectly for this type of style. Why is that, do you think? Anyone would assume a pinchy type of hairpin would grip harder than a wide open one.
Do you think U-pins would still work for very fine hair? I've never tried them before, but the open look makes me wonder if they would just fall right out.

This is only a guess, but I think it's because they can hold so much more hair than a pinchy hairpin-- I think it also helps that your hair becomes more dense when you compress with twisting or braiding, so it makes it easier for a u-shaped pin to stay put, the same way a regular pointy sewing pin will hold itself in cloth.
@@michicrj I believe so, yes, especially if your hair is on the longer side; I do think that it's hard to make them work if you have very short hair, simply because they don't have much to grab. If your hair is prone to losing pins because it's very slippery I'd recommend you look for pins that have little crimps in the metal, or there's even a brand called Frenchies that makes u-pins that have a velvety coating that helps them stay in your hair-- they're much pricier than plain metal pins, and the coating apparently comes off after a few uses, but they might be worth a try if you've exhausted other options. Hope that helps!
@@elizar.7037 You make a very good point. If you try to grab too much hair in a standard bobby pin, it strains and actually tries to work itself out. But you don't have that problem with a U pin. Plus there is that trick you can sometimes do with U pins where you pre-pinch them so that after being stuck in they spread out , gripping in a totally different way. I gotta go find some now. Hope they still sell them in grocery stores!

I started doing this style with my medium straight hair and I really like it. Takes 5-10 minutes after practicing and always gets compliments. Highly recommend 💜
