The irony of the chemise à la reine: Scandalous for everyone Revolutionary for the upper class Simplicity is a mockery for the lower class But then everyone started wearing it after the instigator was beheaded, her chemise influenced fashion for the next 30 years
My forty-ish years of living in either the Deep South, or the Midwest, never once allowed me to be curious about historical sewing. More's the pity. This shit is fascinating as hell.
this channel has become medicine for my anxiety. i love learning the historical elements, i LOVE the way she talks, and i really enjoy watching her make the clothing! i started having a giant anxiety attack ( I'm close to graduation in dental hygiene school and boards are coming up and I'm having trouble staying calm) and i shut myself in my room and watching 3 of her videos and felt more calm and put together than i have in a month
I personally think it is because of the way she speaks. As someone who lives in England, her accent sounds extremely American to me. The manner of her speech, however is quite proper, which honestly threw me off too at first, as I have gotten used to hearing a New York accent spoken in an informal/ aggressive tone. So yea, I don’t know if I just can’t recognise it, since a number of British accents do not register in my brain, but I do not hear any Britishness in her voice.
There is something so satisfying of pulling out a pair of sheers in a Most Dramatic Fashion! And huzzah for rambliness interspersed with croissant-y guinea pigs :D Who could ask for anything more? (Well, who would dare with such a dagger like pair of sheers...)

This sash gives really nice contrast and is great representation of dark red (burgundy?) aesthetic trash ;D This dress really suits you, Bernadette, and I think it's etherealness (is this even a word?) gives really nice contrast to tailored pieces of Lady Sherlock.
How beautiful!! My grandmother was an amazing seamstress. She hand sewed most of my dresses and a gorgeous blue velvet coat for me when I was a child. When I watch your videos I realize how hard she worked for those garments and that sewing like this is a true labor of love. Thank you for sharing your sewing adventures with us. 💖
When she hid the shiny side of the ribbon for ”a casual look” I thought to myself *that seemed casual enough with the shiny side* Then I looked down at my lounge outfit and I'm wearing: A neon patchwork waistcoat, a sheer men’s dress shirt open at the top two buttons, two necklaces, four rings, and some loose teal jeans with sailor moon socks It occurred to me that my casual isn't actually casual
Wasn't Marie Antoinette's "Chemise a la Reine" actually considered as "underwear"? But, she wore it as outerwear and is wearing it in one of her many famous portraits! What she did was very risque and bold! You might say that Marie Antoinette was the "Madonna" of her time (Madonna, the popstar, made wearing underwear as outerwear popular in the 1980's). I enjoy watching your videos! You're so talented!
Yes. It was a great scandal that she didn't wear a corset and such light garment. Especcially because the fashion trend was big, bigger, biggest in hair and dresses. But at this point in time Marie Antoinette withdrew more and more from Versailles and had here own palace and small village built to live an as "normal" as possible life. This dress was part of her new lifestyle.
The chemise was an underdress. It also doubled as a nightgown. A corset was worn over it, then a skirt. A separate bodice to match the skirt, or a short jacket on top. Noble ladies wore petticoats, hoop skirts, etc, in addition. Lots of layers in winter, no central heating. So, at the time, it really was underwear. Today they look dressy, especially the ones with ruffles around the neckline and puffy sleeves. This type wouldn't be worn as underwear. Marie was the Princess Diana of her day. Ironically, Princess Diana's wedding dress resembled Marie's dress in the famous (infamous at the time) portrait
I've just watched a 22 minute video of an adorable young lady making a beautiful dress from scratch, a dress that would never EVER touch my filthy peasant figure, and it is oddly satisfying.
You might be inspired to actually take up some sewing if you watch Morgan Donner's rainbow version of this because she does it very simply. And then tie dyes the living crap out of it 💛 Also never refer to yourself as a peasant because the things you say to yourself begin creating your mental reality which attracts the same thing to you from the rest of the world. Not good self care my dear... Another less time-consuming option is just to find a nice linen or cotton sundress and Thrift flip it by adding some frillys to it
We used to call these peasant dresses back in the 70's. I made and wore them a lot. Nowadays, Marie Antoinette gets credit for the style, but she was actually trying to emulate peasant style at her mini farm on the grounds of Versailles. Was the controversy due to the fact that a chemise was an underdress, and even peasants would wear another skirt and a corset over it, or it was frequently worn as a nightgown, or, that a queen would never dress like a peasant, let alone appear in a portrait as one? Probably both.
Is it just me, or does the end montage give off some serious Beauty and the Beast vibes? Like, the ponytail, the library...historical Belle cosplay anyone?
That feel when you find a new anxiety-calming-thing and watch it all within two weeks so you're desperate for new content ... that you watch immediately when it comes out. Oh boy. Thank you so much for your videos, Bernadette, they're so relaxing!!
I’m laughing at the end because Lord Cesario is just like my dog, Lady Lilly, who will only lapsit when she feels like lapsitting and snorts in indignation when she is forced to be in my lap for some short term cuddles! "And the sleeves are attached uneventfully, which is always a wondrous occasion." Thank you for reminding me that sleeves are not, in fact, simple amateur stuff I should have gotten in the first attempt - on my second sleeve attachment ever; and that having it not fit 4 times, followed by discovering it was inside out compared to the rest of the shirt - but it fit perfectly this time!, is a perfectly good reason to set down your project and refuse to touch it, except to shove it out of the way, for 2 days while reverting to some "simple" quilt piecing. If Bernadette considers installing a sleeve correctly on the first attempt a "wondrous occasion" at this point in her sewing journey, who am I, with all of my non-practice with garments to think I should be permitted to do so without strife?

“Haters can fasten yon britches and, deal with it. “ I’m putting that line in my back pocket to deftly whip out at specific and opportune moments. Also, “supremely extra aesthetic trash”...kinda my jam.
Also, SLIDEY BOOKCASE!!!
If there is sticker, teacup, or wearable merch, that should be on the merch.
Lovely dress for a charming seamstress. I think Cesario approves. Love your videos!
@@victoriaj.9055 agreed 100%
+1 for stickers that say "Fasten yon britches and deal with it". Maybe add an online store for such things to your website?
Also, this dress is 100% the inspiration for the one I'm making for my birthday. I promise I'm not completely copying you! . . . but I am definitely a little bit copying you.
“Now that it’s fall it’s time to get around to summer sewing”
I feel called out
At least you're not five years behind in your sewing projects.
I came to this channel for historical fashion. I stayed when I got slapped in the face with Bernadette's incredible sense of humor.
"Its autumn and its time to work on that summer dress" I have just started on a winter sports jacket in a wool blend. It may be finished in time for summer.
...yes.. just how this works. :D
And... Did you finish it?
@@NeedANewName yes..... Then we had a wet summer. So I still get to wear it
It’s May and I just started to knit a thick woolen sweater so I feel you :D

Here’s another for you:
Now I will perform, what I enjoy recalling as a professional game maneuver.
"if you are likewise aesthetic trash and require these with a similar vengeance" LOLOLOLOL!! I laughed all the way to the tea kettle.
It would seem that I too, am aesthetic trash and do indeed require these with vengeance. I also most heartily concur, that "haters can fasten yon britches and deal with it."
And yes, the guinea pig content is exceptionally important.
valkyrie cain exceptionally!!
I love the dress, I want one now. *grabby hands at the universe*
I literally choked when she unsheathed those scissors! Then my eyes teared up when she said she posted the link. Then an actual tear dropped when I saw that they're only $17.99!
I wish those ones were still available. They have others, but, my covetous heart was set on the same exact ones.
Who on this earth would 'dislike' this video? Ah yes, those haters, who cannot fasten their britches...
It’s the costume designers for all those “historically accurate” period dramas
I hadn't even noticed the thumbs down, I was too busy being delighted. After reading your comment I scrolled up to check. I hope she is taking it in her stride because it's not worth it. When a video is seriously offensive, completely useless or dangerous in any way it warrants a thumb down, but Bernadette is charming, talented, and offends nobody, she doesn't give bad advice either. She even treats her pet so well she won't disturb a nap on her feet to get her proper scissors. So cute. So the haters should take Pollyanna's advice and if they have nothing nice to contribute just be quiet.
Perhaps Bernadette should create a video on how to fasten one's britches
🤣
lmao

"Right, exactly. Onward with the video."
Stylphede 😂
"haters may fasten yon britches..." hahaha
That line made my day lol
Laughed hard at that part.
I had to listen several times. So satisfying
Absolutely adore how she just goes into this Pensive and Restless Young Victorian Woman mode when showing how her clothes look after completing them.
"...which took approximately 95 eternities."
I really love the way you exaggerate so specifically; it reminds me of so many 19th century novels I read growing up

The irony of the chemise à la reine:
Scandalous for everyone
Revolutionary for the upper class
Simplicity is a mockery for the lower class
But then everyone started wearing it after the instigator was beheaded, her chemise influenced fashion for the next 30 years
Renault Ellis wow! Really?😩🙁
There's a portrait of Empress Josephine wearing a similar dress.

“cut out with normal paper shears because we are not heathens” truer words could never be said.
NightBurst Studios I, also loved her comment “we are not heathens” watching intently caught me off guard and I busted out laughing.
I can’t decide if she actually has a British accent or if it just sounds like she *should* so much that my brain is making it happen.
Blythe Vrindavana
She has some kind of “mid-Atlantic” accent with both New-Yorkian and British features.
She speaks like Katherine Hepburn. I love listening to her.
It's what happens when you learn most of your vocabulary and speech patters from reading British lit growing up. I have a similar problem.
If you slow it down from ‘normal’ speed to 75%, Bernadette’s accent is definitely American.
Me just starting this video: Dear god I hope she linked those scissors.
ANNNNDDDD now they will be here Monday.
Thank you!!!!
There is something so satisfying of pulling out a pair of sheers in a Most Dramatic Fashion! And huzzah for rambliness interspersed with croissant-y guinea pigs :D Who could ask for anything more? (Well, who would dare with such a dagger like pair of sheers...)
When you pulled that thread to use as a guide for cutting straight, my mind was BLOWN. That's so genius!
Genius? Don't know about that. It's the way I was taught back in the "dark ages" when little girls' clothes were made by Mama. We actually felt sorry for the girls whose mothers did not know how to sew. They were reduced to wearing store bought.
@@maryannerick7617 That's fair but I've only started teaching myself last year how to sew and it had never occurred to me! How wonderful that you got to have those memories with your mother though! :)
@@asifloserface Hi! Such a odd time to receive a notification about a comment posted many moons ago, however your response to the above poster was just so genuine and polite. I hope your sewing escapades have treated you well and that you’ve learnt an arsenal of new techniques. Stay brilliant!! ✨

This dress looks splendid, and royal worthy indeed. I am also glad that it's comfy, my favourite kind of garments are when you look smart and put together but in reality you were just drinking tea, reading a book and living your best comfortable life.
When she hid the shiny side of the ribbon for ”a casual look” I thought to myself *that seemed casual enough with the shiny side*
Then I looked down at my lounge outfit and I'm wearing:
A neon patchwork waistcoat, a sheer men’s dress shirt open at the top two buttons, two necklaces, four rings, and some loose teal jeans with sailor moon socks
It occurred to me that my casual isn't actually casual
Maggie L your casual sounds awesome!
Thats mi kind of Casual🤪👏
Maggie L I believe I need a picture or an Instagram account to view this fashion confection.
Your casual sounds like a Lisa Frank version Sarah from Labyrinth. And that it absolutely a compliment.

Imagine having Bernadette as your mom. Halloween would be bomb
At first, I was like “cool scissors!” Then.. when I say it came with an actual sheath, I literally out loud said, “I need those.”
Same!
Watching someone is passionate about something it’s always so entertaining.
The scandal was that she wore a very informal gown for a royal portrait, and such a portrait was typically expected to be very formal.
“We are not heathens.” I swear she is seriously my mood in life!
Heathen became my favorite insult just before I found this channel... IT WAS FATE
Add "rising above, I am rising above", and we pretty much are set.
And then tie dyes the living crap out of it 💛
Also never refer to yourself as a peasant because the things you say to yourself begin creating your mental reality which attracts the same thing to you from the rest of the world.
Would Cesario be the beast?

"And the sleeves are attached uneventfully, which is always a wondrous occasion."
Thank you for reminding me that sleeves are not, in fact, simple amateur stuff I should have gotten in the first attempt - on my second sleeve attachment ever; and that having it not fit 4 times, followed by discovering it was inside out compared to the rest of the shirt - but it fit perfectly this time!, is a perfectly good reason to set down your project and refuse to touch it, except to shove it out of the way, for 2 days while reverting to some "simple" quilt piecing.
If Bernadette considers installing a sleeve correctly on the first attempt a "wondrous occasion" at this point in her sewing journey, who am I, with all of my non-practice with garments to think I should be permitted to do so without strife?

That's a beautiful dress, my most humble complements. And it's great to see the sewing room start to take shape.
I'm so short-waisted that I'm basically just on awe of you being able to wear a 2" sash and have it not be your entire waist height. 😄
So beautiful! The camisole is such a great idea! But another idea is to maybe having an overlapping panel which buttons or snaps together beneath the outer bodice layer. I'm actually thinking of making something similar, but perhaps a modern take on an early regency round-gown. Thanks for the video and #historybounding inspo!
