When a video is seriously offensive, completely useless or dangerous in any way it warrants a thumb down, but Bernadette is charming, talented, and offends nobody, she doesn't give bad advice either. She even treats her pet so well she won't disturb a nap on her feet to get her proper scissors. So cute. We used to call these peasant dresses back in the 70's. I made and wore them a lot. Nowadays, Marie Antoinette gets credit for the style, but she was actually trying to emulate peasant style at her mini farm on the grounds of Versailles. Was the controversy due to the fact that a chemise was an underdress, and even peasants would wear another skirt and a corset over it, or it was frequently worn as a nightgown, or, that a queen would never dress like a peasant, let alone appear in a portrait as one? Probably both.

    Wasn't Marie Antoinette's "Chemise a la Reine" actually considered as "underwear"? But, she wore it as outerwear and is wearing it in one of her many famous portraits! What she did was very risque and bold!
    You might say that Marie Antoinette was the "Madonna" of her time (Madonna, the popstar, made wearing underwear as outerwear popular in the 1980's).

      Yes. It was a great scandal that she didn't wear a corset and such light garment. Especcially because the fashion trend was big, bigger, biggest in hair and dresses.
      But at this point in time Marie Antoinette withdrew more and more from Versailles and had here own palace and small village built to live an as "normal" as possible life. This dress was part of her new lifestyle.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 4 года назад +1

    • @Carol120454
      @Carol120454 Месяц назад +1

      The chemise was an underdress. It also doubled as a nightgown. A corset was worn over it, then a skirt. A separate bodice to match the skirt, or a short jacket on top. Noble ladies wore petticoats, hoop skirts, etc, in addition. Lots of layers in winter, no central heating. So, at the time, it really was underwear. Today they look dressy, especially the ones with ruffles around the neckline and puffy sleeves. This type wouldn't be worn as underwear. Marie was the Princess Diana of her day. Ironically, Princess Diana's wedding dress resembled Marie's dress in the famous (infamous at the time) portrait

    "And the sleeves are attached uneventfully, which is always a wondrous occasion."
    Thank you for reminding me that sleeves are not, in fact, simple amateur stuff I should have gotten in the first attempt - on my second sleeve attachment ever; and that having it not fit 4 times, followed by discovering it was inside out compared to the rest of the shirt - but it fit perfectly this time!, is a perfectly good reason to set down your project and refuse to touch it, except to shove it out of the way, for 2 days while reverting to some "simple" quilt piecing.
    If Bernadette considers installing a sleeve correctly on the first attempt a "wondrous occasion" at this point in her sewing journey, who am I, with all of my non-practice with garments to think I should be permitted to do so without strife?

    Love this project. This style of dress is definitely one of my personal favorites. Thank you for filming it.
    Whilst watching this video my four year old daughter snuggled up and noticed your lovely new scissors. She was quite impressed by how sword-like they are. However she was also quite disappointed by the lack of jewels. So while the scissors are, in general, quite extra, they are not extra enough 🤷‍♀️

    So beautiful! The camisole is such a great idea! But another idea is to maybe having an overlapping panel which buttons or snaps together beneath the outer bodice layer. I'm actually thinking of making something similar, but perhaps a modern take on an early regency round-gown. Thanks for the video and #historybounding inspo!

    The dress is stunning ❤️ it's on my bucket list to create a dress so beautiful as this! But would you be willing to make a simple vintage dress for begginers ? It's hard to know where to start you make it "seam" so effortless

      There are a lot of good patterns out there, so long as you get the good ones. Like, Simply recently rereleased a lot of their old patterns and they're quite simple and fun.

      She said the pirate shirt was a good place to start (on that video.) I know you want a dress, but then pairing that with a simple long skirt might be fun to start with though. A long full skirt like that was my first attempt at drafting my own riding skirt 2 years ago. It worked well enough to be able to give it to my friend.

    i squealed when you went up the bookshelf ladder in your new beautiful ethereal dress, absolute life goals !
    Also these Sheers of Destiny(tm) definitely require being worn at the waist in a full sewing-warrior outfit, by a brave (and very aesthetic) young lady fighting crime in foggy streets, out to defeat her nemesis : the all-powerful Sleeve Lord...

      Me too. My hair is hip length, but its baby fine. My sideburns (because I have those for some reason - little sections that only grow to about 3" long) are literally as soft and fine as newborn baby hair and the rest is not much thicker. So in a pony tail I'm lucky if it measures an inch circumference at the thickest part. My hair is plenty dense enough in terms of scalp coverage, its just the individual strands are so fine that gathered together they take up barely any volume. I do wish my hair were just a little bit thicker sometimes.

    Related question: have you ever watched A Stitch in Time with fashion historian Amber Burchart? She did an episode where they recreated Marie Antoinette's chemise a la reine using historical methods and it's delightful. (The whole series is on RUclips)

    Whenever I tell my hubby that there's a new video by Ms. Bernadette, we grab our tea cups and settle down to thoroughly enjoy. You are charming, and informative, witty, and cheeky. All of it comes together to make each adventure with you lovely. Add in Shears of Destiny and floof content and that makes it even more completely enjoyable. Thank you for sharing with us again, and we look forward to your next installment.
