My late hubby fenced in the Marines (archaic, but cool), the sound would have made him so happy! I think they teach duelling/fencing because dress uniforms still carry ceremonial rapiers, but that's just a guess. Also ONE of my favorite parts of the video.
Yeah ngl, definitely did not expect to find myself here but she is so smart, and talented, and funny, and gorgeous. For a nerd like me, it's easy to get a bit of a crush.
I have been struggling a lot with figuring out what I need to do to make myself happy and seeing you unapologetically yourself is both refreshing and inspiring.
I got such Morticia Addams vibes off of this, and I am here for it! I really get what you’re saying about the importance of fancy house clothes, I have this glorious, ankle length, peach colored, satin night gown with lace trimming. Whenever I wear it, I always feel like some sort of Hollywood golden age movie star, and it tends to make my day tons better. It’s hard not to have improved self-esteem when you invest in your appearance without thinking of what others will see, and I appreciate this video for validating that belief.
I can attest to this sentiment, I've made two 1890s tea gowns, one out of a minky blanket material that passes as velvet for the winter, and a cotton elbow length one (still gotta have the dramatic poofy sleeves) for when it's not cold, and it makes my existence around the house heightened beyond measure, and makes guests very impressed with how apparently-fancy I'm dressed when they pop by.
@@DaniCal1forn1a Yup! Theres a few different types of minky at Joann but particularly, I used the shortest pile under the brand "Pure Plush", it looks the most like velvet but it's blanket material and a bit stretchy (and it doesn't fray unlike the longer pile options).
I once cut a velvet (veloury) sleeve on grain, but upside down so when you ran your hand over the dress, it was smooth one way (like dress) but rough on the other sleeve (unless you ran your hand from wrist to shoulder ) like an old school lint brush does! i didnt notice it until I wore it. I was trying to save fabric by fitting the pattern in. I never made that mistake again! (Still wore the dress though! Lol!)
How does your gorgeous aesthetic continue getting somehow even better? Also your hair being down and curled looks utterly amazing on you! Gorgeous project, and it looks lovely on you!
Bernadette hand sewing the lining in, me hand sewing an entire quilt despite having multiple offers to borrow sewing machines and the opportunity to buy one...we all have our quirks. 😂 This house robe is absolutely gorgeous.
Life goals...I have a quilt wall hanging that I want to hand sew in linen. The design is off of a 14th c. Italian tryptic, The Death of the Virgin. The pattern of her bier is a square within a square, done in red, white and either black or navy. Probably black, or at least that's my first choice. I just have to find my pattern, because I worked out a fairly elaborate quilting design. Hopefully in this lifetime. 🤓
@@Traci_Websinger honestly, that sounds like it'd be a lot of work but also very enjoyable. The quilt I'm doing is a t-shirt quilt of all the blood donor t-shirts I've gotten for donating blood over the years, and despite absolutely shredding my hands on my pins, it's been a soothing and pleasantly monotonous project. The hand quilting goes faster than you'd think, and the hardest part so far has been trying to math out the widths and lengths of fabric for sashing. I use an embroidery frame to hold the fabric and just watch TV or listen to RUclips and I got 7 large squares sewn together and quilted in under 2 weeks. I'm sure that whenever you decide to start on your project, it'll be very fulfilling to finish and it'll look great when it's done!
Im hand sewing the lining of a suit jacket just because I enjoy doing it and I like the fact the tiny pulls from the felling stitches are real and not faked on a machine...
I sow horse blankets back together by hand, despite the barn owner having multiple machines, one of then even an industrial sewing machine that can even go trough leather 😂 I just favour doing it by hand
There cannot be many channels where the video sponsor segment is so entertaining as those Bernadette produces - the quirky humour just grabs me every time 👍👍
The hand stitching footage is, as always, soothing to the proverbial soul, but also the bobbin winding was oh so satisfying. Also the romping around at the end was delightful. Dressing gowns, all the time!
A collab between you and Jill Bearup would be so wonderful. I would love to see a historical inspired assassin's ball gown, with a million pockets for million ways to hide weapons.
I don't know if Dani has been doing most of the editing these days, but this hasn't been the first time I've watched video and find myself thinking "....I get the feeling this is a Dani-edited video" and check the credits and yup, sure is! xD And I say that with supreme admiration! I can't even explain exactly what moments clue me in that it's Dani's touch, but it's there and I love it. (Obviously, both of you Banner siblings are awesome, and it's wonderful how the two of you get to collaborate like this!) (Also, that ad spot? Absolutely hilarious! xD this Dark Witch Academic Spy absolutely made me giggle)
@@DannyBanner I only which that there was more footage used, just 18 min. is a bit short I think 🙂. I also hope that you find the time soon to make one of your own videos.
No one does sponsor segments like Bernadette. Fantastic. I'm sold. Also, fantabulous dressing gown, I found a couple second hand dressing gowns at a thrift store that are velvet, one red, one green, and I can also attest to just how elegant and ephemeral one feels in said dressing gowns. Highly recommend.
I love the red coat she put on at the end it really made me think of Carmen Sandiego. Like “ with Nord VPN where in the world is Carmen Sandiego viewing her content from?”
11:36 Did anyone else notice that Bernadette mentioned using a needle board for her pressing? I'm glad she finally decided to acquire one - I'm sure we all remember her pressing struggles from the black velvet ball gown project (not that the work on that gown wasn't still beautiful; the lack of a velvet board just seemed to make the pressing significantly more complicated)
I've noticed that the non-American sewists tend to be able to afford the more esoteric sewing stuff than we who are stuck in the land of quilters and baby-stuff-makers.
Oh my goodness, this robe speaks to me. I'm now on the hunt for some dark red/burgundy cotton velvet to match the burgundy cotton sateen I have in my stash. Maybe add some decrotive embroidery to the edging of the bodice down to the hem. Oh goodness the possibilities of extraness for this type of robe are endless. My extra witchy heart thanks ye for stiring it's creativeness. Now only to get my bank account to stop hissing at me for wanting to make a new garment.
Ok, this has to be my favorite so far! 1) I have the same clasp 2) I do the medieval 10 gore dresses 3) the nap always goes up 4) the demonic chanting for slippery linings 5) piecing is indeed period 6) it's so lovely 7) the silly ending for Nord VPN You made my day! Thank you
Wow, never thought I would find sewing so fascinating. The skill and results are so impressive. I just love the look of that garment. Make me nostalgic for an era I never lived in 😜
I’m loving all the tailoring techniques involved in the construction of this. Those themselves feel like a ritual when one does them. Invoking powerful thread magics!
@@adiposeNarnian imagine my discovery as a parent when my witchling child informed me they saw the magic in crochet and sewing... and felt safer and stronger wearing/sleeping under the clothes and blankets I made. Magic is all around us, if we slow down and notice, I guess?
I agree with all of you, and why I love fiber so much. I primarily crochet and design quilts (maybe some day I'll actually finish one), but love learning everything I can about playing with fibers. So much of yourself goes in to your work. And I love how your child picks up on it.
Holy whoa, this and she is gorgeous. The loose hair is perfect with the comfy-at-home vibe. And I intensely appreciate that even the great Bernadette can make a rookie mistake like forgetting about ease. Thank you for keeping that in the final edit.
And it's an underappreciated teaching tool. For novices like moi, it's incredibly relieving to see that experienced seamstresses can make small errors too
I may have to appropriate Holy woah! Trying to quit cursing after my USMC hubby of 20 years passed away and my new sweetie doesn't swear...at all, EVER. It's harder than I thought! Oh my Gosh just doesn't have the impact I am looking for!
I had completely impressed every kid in the neighborhood by going to the grocery store in McGonagall robe; now I need to up my game having seen what better materials do. Horsehair is impressive stuff. Thank you, Bernadette!
This video has everything, beautiful clothes, jokes about unnecessary accuracy, flouncing around in said beautiful clothes, and… a Victorian spy movie parody including glamorous costume change?? Perfection.
YES YES YES! The drama is beyond! And what made it even more perfect was how much you could tell Bernadette enjoyed wearing it!!! I love to see it! Feel the fantasy girlfriend!!
"As unnecessarily dramatic as possible" is absolutely the aesthetic I go for when I have the spoons to make/wear anything more complicated than pajama bottoms xD
Fun fact! I know this is 19th C, but based on a medieval styling. Medieval people did not give a damn which way the velvet went and completely *would* cut their pieces so it zigzaged up and down. Whether you want to is up to you, but that would create a really cool effect too.
An example of an ingenious solution of this problem was found in Prague Castle: In the burial garment of Jan Zhořelecký (+1396), all the front pieces were cut in one way and all the back pieces in the other way. As a result, the difference in direction of the velvet fabric was visible only in side view.
Okay but can we just talk about how brilliant and beautiful Bernadette is? She’s so smart and witty and the add integration was *chefs kiss 😂 but the drama of the robe with the long curly hair girl I wasn’t prepareddddddd
The sumptuous verdant velvet, the ornate lunate clasp, the flowing sleeves, the potential for dramatically flouncing one's hemline... I must say, that is an unforgettable housecoat. Eccentric and exquisite and elegant as a Pre-Raphaelite painting.
I feel like dressing gowns should be making a comeback with so many people wfh at least part time. I made a few for zoom calls so that I can look like a professional while also wearing my pjs and I was surprised that I use them so much.
Last winter we very quickly got to the stage that people were wearing woolly hats in zoom calls. It’s been a bit warmer this year so hopefully we can make it to November before we resort to that. You know your industry is in trouble when the boss is wearing an old leather and fur flying jacket in meeting….non of us can afford heating! The velvet housecoat looks like a much nicer idea.
The amount of magic, aesthetic and drama in every second of your videos makes them an artpiece for sure - each and every one. I can swear you ride a Pegasus, a unicorn, or a Cerberus when riding on your daily errands (and "historically" true versions, for sure :) You definitely can summon each or all of them in that gorgeous ethereal robe.
I love this project - this deep emerald green is such a compelling colour and you look phenomenal in it. I also love how Nicole Rudolph just put out a very similar project which starts from the exact same reference point (Victorian tea gowns and the Aesthetic Movement), takes the same approach (an interpretation of the style from a modern context) yet this is where the similarities end and the results and techniques used are dramatically different. Chef's kiss
I made a velvet gown and forgot about directional fabric. The back panels are now dark grey. 😂😩🤦🏼♀️ Lesson learnt: don’t try be cheap on fabric to cut corners. This is gorgeousssss 😍🧡
Curtains can be a good source for velvet, and are especially cheap if they're second hand. I've been making a *very extra* gnome cosplay from a gold Ikea curtain I got in the bargain bin, and it was some of the best $15 I've ever spent! 😄
Make sure, to look very carefully at the fabric (in good daylight!) before commiting to buying used curtains, though. Constant UV exposure can really do a number on the dyes and also make (natural fibers especially) very brittle. I've had large window fronts all my life and have some experience with that effect.
I feel like you had a sudden random urge to be "modern" and spontaneous ( even more so than normal) and thus this masterpiece was born. Thank you it was greatly enjoyable. Love your content!
I was given a maxi length (on me) linen dress by a friend and its immediately become my lounging around the house staple. This is a timely reminder that I can wear it with my full length velvet cardigan for extra drama Your skills are impeccable and I love this finished robe
This is very creative. You've taken all that you've learned in historical garments, and created something entirely yours. It's lovely, dramatic, and very personal. Bravo!
Gorgeous gown! Definitely understand the desire to look dramatic which is where my affinity for coats and capes comes from. The desire to swoosh and twirl seems to be there for everyone. lol. Also that sponsorship has that Carmen San Diego vibe that is irresistible.
You've just reminded me that I have a pair of very soft light pink velvet curtains which I'd earmarked for a skirt... but are now begging to be made into a glamorous robe! I have no time at the moment, but I'm definitely keeping the idea in mind 🤔🙃
Watching the old Singer do its thing is like watching magic. So elegant and at the same time engineering to be appreciated (especially for it's time). Beautiful 👌🏻 I get the same wonderous/amazed feeling watching it work as I had seeing the inventions in Willy Wonka's factory.
I love how you just make whatever you like and take us along for the ride. Whether it is meticulous reconstruction of a historical garment, or something like this that is meant to be practical everyday wear, there are always lessons that we as the audience can learn. 😊
Off topic, but I just noticed this. I've been watching you for about 3 years now and have enjoyed every second of it! When I started watching this channel, I had chin length hair. I had just cut it because I needed a clean slate, I had just broken up with my first long term boyfriend, I had to navigate moving back home to my mom's place etc. etc. Either way, I remember thinking "Bernadette has such luscious locks and it looks so healthy as well, I wish my hair could look like that" and saying to myself that I would grow my hair that long and healthy, no matter how long it took. I just noticed that my hair is the same length as yours now, dare I say a few centimeters longer. So thank you for inadvertently inspiring me to grow my hair healthy and strong! :D Great video, as always
Any chance of making the pattern available?! Happy to pay! I have decided this looks like a fabulous project for the Christmas holidays although I'm not entirely certain the family will agree! 🙃
I am loving the more open and adventurous Bernadette that we have been seeing lately! The growth of confidence in yourself is showing and it's about time!!! The gown came out so beautifully and it looks great on you. Thank you for bringing us along on the journey!
Congratulating myself on knowing what defenestration was without having to look it up! I wish I had even just 1% of your style and grace Bernadette, thank you for sharing this beautiful gown with us 💗
You are one of the only people I’ll watch the sponsorship segments from. You’re always so creative so they’re either beautiful shots or hilarious (or both, I live for your humour) and this did not disappoint either.
Bernadette: *taking the time to hand sew the lining in* Me: *taking the time to unpick the back pockets from the jeans I’m using to make a weird late Victorian inspired walking skirt* I love taking way more time to do things than is necessary
1) I have never been the Second Renee, this is fascinating. 2) unpicking lots of seams before remaking something is arguably my favorite part of the process. So satisfying.
I won't handsew anything I can use my Pfaff for, but I WILL unpick all seams in the garments I get from thrift stores to use in my doll clothes LOL Mind I do handsew a lot cause, doll clothes....
Nice to know I'm not the only one using pockets! I would love to see your finished walking skirt. I unpick used clothes for the fabrics and make them into all kinds of garments... looking at my lap at the yoke I'm piecing for a green petticoat.
I find myself with a powerful need to make an overly dramatic, luxuriously swooshy robe 😍 And I do think that was my favourite ad-read ever, absolutely brilliant!
Welcome to the unnecessarily extravagant sweeping robe club. I made mine with celestial grey and gold stretch velvet about a year ago. It has a *train* and a very satisfying Severus Snape-esque billow.
I appreciate you showing us physically how to do the pattern work because trying to just read written directions was not sticking in my brain. Now that I have seen it in action it makes WAY more sense!! Also you have made a gorgeous robe and you look stunning!!
So I definitely need to make one of these but also I can’t decide what I like more - B frolicking in the new wrapper/robe or B in victorian spy garb spider crawling into frame and transforming into a modern spy. Both? Both are good.
Thank you Bernadette. I truly wish you and the Internet had been around when I was in my sewing heyday, decades ago. You are so inspirational! I love that you share things like “I just made a very common mistake in drafting-I forgot to add ease.” Helps the rest of us feel less silly when doing things like ripping out the sleeve we just somehow managed to sew on inside out! You are also tempting me greatly with NordVPN, and your amazing spy ad. As others have said, you should be getting paid double for your spots. It’s a very rare ad I’ll watch these days (that’s why I pay for no ads, dammit!), but yours consistently make the cut. And last but not least, as a long-hair owner, I am mesmerized by the swishy-ness and shiny-ness of both the robe and the hair. You are a dream to watch! Thank you for all you do. :)
Have you ever tried velveteen? It doesn't look quite as luxe, but it's easier to wash and iron, is one-directional (so less wasteful for this kind of garment) and is considerably less messy to sew than true velvet (although decidedly not mess*free*).
Ah I just love this!! It’s the perfect medieval/witchy house coat. Also makes me think of LOTR as I could see the elves of Rivendell wearing this lol. I wish there was a pattern of this as I’m not great at drafting up my own yet.
there are commercial patterns for dresses that look kinda elven/sort of medieval and I suppose with cutting the centerfront panel as two pieces you can get a robe with that kinda vibe. (I'm in my 4th year as a tailor in training so idk how difficult it is to someone who didn't go to school for it. But I haven't draped anything either so I'd modify an existing pattern).

Ooh this answers my question of whether I could make something like this out of minky! 🤩
i'm inspired now
@@DaniCal1forn1a Yup! Theres a few different types of minky at Joann but particularly, I used the shortest pile under the brand "Pure Plush", it looks the most like velvet but it's blanket material and a bit stretchy (and it doesn't fray unlike the longer pile options).
Never thought about velvet being directional like this. Very important!
Yes, it’s called ‘nap’.
Modern hair bernadette is truly enchanting
This robe gives me elven-ish, witchy vibes... I LOVE it!
My mom still hand quilts full sized quilts on a huge quilt frame that takes up a whole room. ONE per family member 😅
There cannot be many channels where the video sponsor segment is so entertaining as those Bernadette produces - the quirky humour just grabs me every time 👍👍
god bernadette never misses, every video is a perfectly crafted thing its soso nice to watch and enjoy and all the effort does not go unappreciated
The hand stitching footage is, as always, soothing to the proverbial soul, but also the bobbin winding was oh so satisfying. Also the romping around at the end was delightful. Dressing gowns, all the time!
I loooooveeee watching her hand stitch!!! Even the basing is a fave!!! Stitch art beautiful.
I'm sorry "proverbial soul"? Why is your soul "Proverbial", what soulless creature are you??
@@jeanetten.s.8557 I mean, I've worked in customer service many a year. It's been pretty well smushed out of me.
This is not unnecessary drama.. it's very much a necessity 😂
I'm not a robe person but I feel like I'm about to be 😂
The idea of 'lady in the streets, bum underneath' is definitely one I can get behind.
I adore the fact, that you had full hair and makeup done, while discussing how one could just throw the robe on the pyjamas. The mood!
A collab between you and Jill Bearup would be so wonderful. I would love to see a historical inspired assassin's ball gown, with a million pockets for million ways to hide weapons.
This is such a creative idea!
Yes yes yes this is an inspired idea
I don't know if Dani has been doing most of the editing these days, but this hasn't been the first time I've watched video and find myself thinking "....I get the feeling this is a Dani-edited video" and check the credits and yup, sure is! xD And I say that with supreme admiration! I can't even explain exactly what moments clue me in that it's Dani's touch, but it's there and I love it. (Obviously, both of you Banner siblings are awesome, and it's wonderful how the two of you get to collaborate like this!)
(Also, that ad spot? Absolutely hilarious! xD this Dark Witch Academic Spy absolutely made me giggle)
Hey thanks so much! That’s awesome to hear you’re enjoying the editing style, I certainly have lots of fun with it :]
Was it the pocket interlude? It was the pocket interlude wasn't it.
@@DannyBanner is it okay to say, that I wish you would make more videos yourself?
She DOES provide a link to the fabric she uses in the video description. Quite pricey !
Ok, this has to be my favorite so far!
1) I have the same clasp
2) I do the medieval 10 gore dresses
3) the nap always goes up
4) the demonic chanting for slippery linings
5) piecing is indeed period
6) it's so lovely
7) the silly ending for Nord VPN
You made my day! Thank you
...may I rectify that tibetan monk chants are not demonic.
That’s indeed very unnecessarily dramatic. Love it
Absolutely exquisite. Also there is something to be said for wearing one's hair up regularly, it makes the hair-down moments SO dramatique
A woman after my own heart. Overly fancy housewear is so much my thing. Also, those _sunglasses_ are amazing, and I am envious.
As a witch who sews, I have never seen sewing as magic, which is peculiar, because it is certainly ritual
@@adiposeNarnian imagine my discovery as a parent when my witchling child informed me they saw the magic in crochet and sewing... and felt safer and stronger wearing/sleeping under the clothes and blankets I made.
Magic is all around us, if we slow down and notice, I guess?
What you think about and feel while you hand stitch definitely goes into the garment :)
'Fell Stitching' was always a 'do-I-have-to-?' moment that irked me but I've learned to love it!
Me: "why cant you just rotate the fabric?"
Bernadette explaining it in a second why you can but not with this fabric
I am satisfied with my learning 🙂
That's what I thought. I can see this robe in a Millais painting.
Beautifully eloquent. This English major thanks you.
I absolutely LOVE the unnecessary, but necessary drama you have created with this robe! It's stunning!
Oh my goodness, the dramatic chaotic energy of this video! It is iconic! I love watching you have fun 😁
I have a spotted dress with one back panel in the skirt the wrong way up for the same reason. Drives me mad.
Also look for curtains, material at resale shops
Make sure, to look very carefully at the fabric (in good daylight!) before commiting to buying used curtains, though. Constant UV exposure can really do a number on the dyes and also make (natural fibers especially) very brittle. I've had large window fronts all my life and have some experience with that effect.
I feel like you had a sudden random urge to be "modern" and spontaneous ( even more so than normal) and thus this masterpiece was born. Thank you it was greatly enjoyable. Love your content!
I was given a maxi length (on me) linen dress by a friend and its immediately become my lounging around the house staple. This is a timely reminder that I can wear it with my full length velvet cardigan for extra drama
Your skills are impeccable and I love this finished robe
Im not into sewing at all. I just find your videos extremely calming.
Same and gorgeous.
“sheer personal enjoyment” is always the best reason to do anything 💖
Congrats on finally getting a needle board! Thanks for being brave and using velvet.
This is very creative. You've taken all that you've learned in historical garments, and created something entirely yours. It's lovely, dramatic, and very personal. Bravo!
This is such a beauteous, comfy, elegant robe. The swish, the soft lushness of the velvet and that moon clasp... magical enchantress vibes abound.
I would still die for a pattern of this!!
It will be Gone with the wind, Caroll Burnett style. . Don't forget to remove the pole.
Great video, as always
Any chance of making the pattern available?! Happy to pay! I have decided this looks like a fabulous project for the Christmas holidays although I'm not entirely certain the family will agree! 🙃
I would love to have this dress too!
+1
I would love it if we could get a pattern for this available for purchase 😃
YES PLEASE
Yes please
Would love to know if there's a pattern somewhere too! Does Bernadette have an etsy shop?
I am loving the more open and adventurous Bernadette that we have been seeing lately! The growth of confidence in yourself is showing and it's about time!!! The gown came out so beautifully and it looks great on you. Thank you for bringing us along on the journey!
Bernadette, you have your hair so neatly back so often in videos that when it's loose like this you look positively ethereal
I am extremely envious of your handwriting.
Congratulating myself on knowing what defenestration was without having to look it up! I wish I had even just 1% of your style and grace Bernadette, thank you for sharing this beautiful gown with us 💗
Ok, I can’t be the only one who thinks her choices of music are absolutely ✨chef’s kiss✨
Always exquisite, and getting better with time
I'm really not into tailoring or historical dresses but I find your videos hypnotizing. You have my like Madame Banner!
You are one of the only people I’ll watch the sponsorship segments from. You’re always so creative so they’re either beautiful shots or hilarious (or both, I live for your humour) and this did not disappoint either.
The narrating outfit might be my favourite I've seen Bernadette wear so far - intimidating, thought-through, dramatic - just gorgeous!
I love Bernadette's hair. And the robe was exquisite as well! ❤
Bernadette: *taking the time to hand sew the lining in*
Me: *taking the time to unpick the back pockets from the jeans I’m using to make a weird late Victorian inspired walking skirt*
I love taking way more time to do things than is necessary
"for the pure joy of it" .... BB
1) I have never been the Second Renee, this is fascinating. 2) unpicking lots of seams before remaking something is arguably my favorite part of the process. So satisfying.
@@MereMeerkat Agreed
I support this women and her fashion-related endeavors whole-heartedly.
That velvet looks supremely luxurious! if i didn't despise the aftermath of working with velvet so much, i'd have jumped into making one myself.
I absolutely LOVE the "Victorian Private Nosy eye"🕵♀️ spot at the end! I want a whole series of adverts with her as a protagonist🥸🤣😎!!
OBSESSED with this. now currently lamenting my lack of fabric and experience to make such beauty into reality
I usually skip any type of advertising in creator's videos, but this one was so well made I just couldn't turn it off :Dd
