I was lucky enough to have my great-grandmother as a close part of my life until I was 39 years old. In her later years, one of her favorite pastimes was to browse through old photos. Her favorite was a picture on her wedding day, atop a wagon, headed to her new home with her new husband. EVERY time she held that photo in her gnarled fingers she would say through tears, "Your Grampa never did see my ankles until that day." It WAS a 'thing' to her. It represented her virtue and chastity. They were married in 1911 when she was 18 years old. Whether it was a thing to more urban folks, to her in rural America, it was vitally important and anything else would have been scandalous.

What a sweet story! My paternal great grandma, born in 1885, was getting in a carriage, (or a buggy), and her ankle got exposed. What's impressive is that she took all those photos by herself and they look like they were done by professional fashion photographers. The one with her laying on the floor holding flowers is straight up gallery-worthy. She was the costume artist, the model, the photographer, and the editor all at once. The very reason ankles were alluring was that they were the only glimpse men saw. Jane Austen talks a LOT about the white, arched neck of a woman. It was just about the only skin a man got to see, other than her hands. So that's what he had to work with. i think the whole 'ankle' thing has to do with the perceived intimacy about seeing something that's normally covered. True. I usually wear long sleeves and trousers during the day because I burn very easily and its more convenient than constantly reapplying sunscreen whenever I want to be outside. If I'm out after dark or if I'm hanging out inside for an extended period of time I'll sometimes ditch the long sleeves if I have a T-shirt with me or roll the sleeves up. I actually refused to do either for a long time when I was younger because anytime I did I would catch someone either staring or doing everything in their power not to look at my arms. It always made me super uncomfortable until I realized it didn't happen with strangers and it was just because people who've known me for awhile never expect me to do it

I think you're probably right. In Agatha Christie's autobiography, she talks about how her Victorian grandmother taught her 'the Queen of Spain has no legs' and to say 'limbs' instead. Even decades later Agatha was a pretty proper person, but she wrote that even as a child she thought the obsession with avoiding legs was nonsensical. One of the few Victorian rules I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for. 🤷♀️

i think the whole 'ankle' thing has to do with the perceived intimacy about seeing something that's normally covered. I'm normally covered basically from neck to ankle (not a religious thing, I just own mostly full-length clothing) and I've got comments before on the occasions I'm not, (like the recent heatwave, when I was showing my *gasp* knees)
similar to how romance books &c often comment on the 'exposed midrif' where a persons shirt rides up. stomachs arent inherently sexy, but in the circumstance it could be.

True. I usually wear long sleeves and trousers during the day because I burn very easily and its more convenient than constantly reapplying sunscreen whenever I want to be outside. If I'm out after dark or if I'm hanging out inside for an extended period of time I'll sometimes ditch the long sleeves if I have a T-shirt with me or roll the sleeves up. I actually refused to do either for a long time when I was younger because anytime I did I would catch someone either staring or doing everything in their power not to look at my arms. It always made me super uncomfortable until I realized it didn't happen with strangers and it was just because people who've known me for awhile never expect me to do it

i always assumed the victorian ankle thing was a modern exaggeration born from how weird victorians could be about legs in general. people learn about how some victorians avoided saying the words legs or trousers, and sometimes covering up table legs, and they start making jokes about repressed victorians and their obsession with a cheeky ankle
I think you're probably right. In Agatha Christie's autobiography, she talks about how her Victorian grandmother taught her 'the Queen of Spain has no legs' and to say 'limbs' instead. Even decades later Agatha was a pretty proper person, but she wrote that even as a child she thought the obsession with avoiding legs was nonsensical. One of the few Victorian rules I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for. 🤷♀️
