I'm fully hearing but I am so grateful for the attention to details in the captions, because my brain lags like a 2009 dell laptop and I often have to have a glance at the captions to catch a little snippet of what's going on in the audio. I used to try to give back to the community and caption videos in my (admittedly very small amounts of) free time, but youtube took out the community captions option, which was really awful of them to do. So, knowing how hard it is to caption things, and with a deep personal appreciation for how well these ones are pulled off, thank you to the captions wizard! (you absolute legend)
She always plays nice music in her videos. They work so nice with the subject. Bernadette is a thinker and she cares to put out quality in whatever she does.
Fabulous clothes and shoes aside, you can really tell how much thought goes into the cinematography and how much it's improved. Don't think we don't notice these things, it just makes the videos even more fun to watch.
I love watching RUclipsrs change their editing and cinematography because it really shows how much effort and care they put into their work!! mad respect
Dear Bernadette, I've noticed lately that with the black garments and summer sun you've been having difficulty with exposure resulting in a lot of backlighting... have you tried using a photography reflector/big white foamboard to bounce the window light and fill in the front? Alternatively getting some semisheer fabric to put in front of the windows to diffuse and soften the window daylight might help.
@@MamaMOB that's not very aesthetically pleasing. Two or more sources of light makes it look much nicer. Reflecting natural light would look better here, as it's just bouncing around the natural light.
I can’t be the only one just admiring how gentle and absolutely perfect Bernadette is 🥺 she’s so gentle with everything she does and her attitude and asthetic is amazing and I wanna be her friend so bad ;-;
The fact that Bernadette does almost all of her work by hand has inspired me to be able to sew. I have a crippling fear of needles to the point where I can’t even use a sewing machine so I always felt like sewing wasn’t something I can do, but if Bernadette can make incredible garments without using a sewing machine then there’s hope after all
Yeah you can do it! It takes longer (maybe don't try to make curtains lol) but it can be very meditative, especially if you're working with stiffer/more solid fabrics like this woven wool and taffeta.
If you use a thimble and start slow to get used to not accidentally poking your fingers you should be fine. Sewing needles are nowhere near as sharp as medical needles so if it wouldn't trigger you to much you could maybe touch the tip of the needle to show yourself that it isn't as bad.
Start with something simple, like one of those embroidery kits, so you can get used to using a needle. I found that pillows are the easiest project to make as it's literally sewing 3.75 straight sides (right sides together) flipping it inside out, stuffing the pillow and then sewing the last 1/4 edge.
My wish list: CDs of Bernadette’s beautiful background music she uses...while running the machine.. Honestly, it’s so peaceful to hear a sewing machine running with soft music playing. But to listen to a vintage manual machine is heaven to me. I just play these videos over and over again. You are such a pleasure in your simplicity Bernadette.
And pay her handsomely and give her all the time she needs for research and design. And then we make that a normal occurence for all historical movies.
Who could say no to that? And also, only get actors who would continue to wear the clothes after the film, to prevent waisting resources and workmanship!
Tonight, I was watching a re-run of Murdoch Mysteries; one of the first things that caught my eye was a crisp black and white version of your BERNADETTE SHOE , elegantly worn by our talented Canadian Comedic Actress: Geri Hall (born in Oakville, Ontario), playing the part of a "femme fatale" on a Trans Atlantic Crossing -- DRAMA. Part of the enjoyment of watching "Murdoch Mysteries" for so many years, and also the "Frankie Drake Mysteries", has been the excellent recreations of the Costumes of the period. I have donated several pieces of actual 1890's -- 1903 clothing to the Royal Ontario Museum, and can attest to the fine workmanship, of the clothing from this special era. 🍁
I just pre-ordered the shoes!!! The Cognac/black Bernadette - My hubby is gifting these to me for our upcoming Anniversary - I am finally going to own a pair of American Duchess (And the design is perfect for my favorite era)
I just got a hundred year old singer with foot-pedal and immediately put the electric machine in the attic. It sews so much better it's not even funny. It's gorgeous and unbreakable, maybe you'll like it, too! Edit: it was cheap as well, I'm over the moon!
Me: most likely seen in leggings and pyjamas, owns no historical clothing Also me: considering spending almost an entire week's pay cheque on shoes ($273 New Zealand dollars exl taxes and shipping)
Since shipping from the US somehow tends to be ludicrously expensive, it may be worth looking into whether their European retailer gives you a better shipping rate: la-rose-passementarie.com/schoenen-accessoires/
Shoes with those beautifully shaped heels had another day in the sun. In the mid 1950's, Capezio came out with ladies dress shoes with them. I loved 'em! Comfortable, stylish, and something besides the very high heeled pumps so popular back then. My grandmother would have loved American Duchess shoes! Shoes in the later part of the 19th Century were not made for left and right feet. Both shoes were the same and your feet either adapted or else. Her feet showed the "adapting" for the rest of her life. As to pockets in skirts: I thought I was the only one who insisted a skirt/dress needed pockets. Nice to know I'm not the only one.
I love the shoes, but living in the UK, and having rather the largest feet imaginable, I need to resist the urge for them. Bernadette, they are perfection, though, and worthy to bear your name. That cloak! I pinned it to my pinterest board a long while ago, and have recently been wondering how I can make it. I have even purchased a quantity of brown wool, and a pale mink silk, with intentions of making said cloak, but without any clue how to begin. Now, here you come to save my day, with not only a link, but a full video to help me on my way. Thank you so much, dear Bernadette, for continuing to inspire us all
@@missvioletnightchild2515 oh no! But they don't have any in my size at the moment. I think I might just buy gift certificates for AD until I can pay for a pair. It won't feel so expensive that way!

Favorite things from this episode: A) therapeutic sewing scenes, B) AD named the shoe for Bernadette, C) Abby made an appearance! D) the whole finished ensemble!!!!
Me: I've never worn a cape, been particularly interested in capes. They look cool, but not for me. *Sees Bernadette making this gorgeous cape* Me: I want that cape. One day I will make that cape.
I wore a lovely ankle-length cape throughout college. I'd made it for cold days at the renfaire, then my actual coat died and I was a poor college student... so cape it was! It was so warm, and every single day felt like I was going to Hogwarts.
Seriously… your hand top stitching is so lovely. Why would anyone machine top stitch when they can hand sew with this type of precision. This is just stunning.
These shoes came out at the exact time that I was seriously considering buying some American Duchess shoes and now I can clearly see which pair is at the top of my list. They are so stunning!
me, two days ago: oh i really want to make a cape... wish bernadette had a cape video, the best i can find is the sherlock coat thing... bernadette: here's the video! here's the free pattern! also you get to watch me gush over shoes! me: 🥳🤗😍
I would love a whole and lengthy ASMR video of sewing sounds to fall asleep to every night. The sound of the steady stitching on an antique sewing machine, the 'snip' sound of the scissors on the cutting table, tinkling pins...my eyelids are heavy just thinking about it! The shoes are amazing!!
Those shoes are to die for! Alas, my need for winter shoes was greater than my need to temperate season pretties, as two pairs of my much loved boots may now be beyond the magic of my favourite cobbler.
You just helped me justify buying these shoes by talking about the heel placement and how comfortable they are. I have terrible back problems and have no reason to waste money on heel I can’t wear but now I can justify these shoes.
There's so much to be said for a well-made shoe, especially when it fits like a glove, is practical, and repairable. My own 1000 milers are as close to the original from the 1910's without being coutoure, using the same tanning process/recipe (from Horween in Chicago woot!) from 1893. I never really appreciated the history of it until watching your channel. Your content (and branding!) is amazing
Lol at the voice change when you say "Experienced Cape Wearer". I do desperately want a pair of Londoners, but maybe a Bernadette should make it's way into the wardrobe of my already extensive shoe collection. I should also actually get around to making my own cape seeing as how I've already patterned it up and resized it to me.
Don't be ashamed of your hand stitching. I find it mesmerising and would happily watch you hand stitch your way through the centuries. You have mastered neat stitches and I am endlessly envious.
I just adore this so much! I must also add that while sewing 100 masks for our friends wedding I had your videos on auto play and felt like I had a sewing buddy. It was dark and gloomy here for many of the days and that just felt so perfect with your aesthetic and music choices. Thank you 😊
I saw this video and my first thought was "wow a one part historical recreation? but the design looks so complicated??" and after watching the video you were obviously able to do it in one part because someone else had already done the hours of research and drafting and trial and error and then made that knowledge available to others. It got me thinking about how valuable you and other historians, fashion or otherwise, really are. While theoretically all the information is out there and theoretically every individual can do their own research there is so much to learn it just isn't feasible. I just wanted to thank you for making all of this knowledge that you have spent years amassing accessible to the rest of us in any small way. You are doing the world an incredible service and I for one am very grateful. I'm sorry for rambling I bet you wont even read this but I needed to say it
How wonderful!! The shoe design is utterly gorgeous and worthy of your name. Absolutely will be putting in a pre-order. The cape is perfection. Practical, but also with a beautifully feminine detail in the pleated wrapping. *vaguely magical piano music* *plucky woodland fairy music* Your closed captioning is on point, as per usual.
My favourite scenes in your videos are you chalking, pinning and cutting the material. I don't know if ANYBODY else ever saw them because I've never actually met anybody that has, but when I was young, one of my favourite movies was from the Beatrix Potter series - The Tailor of Gloucester. I used to watch it over and over, and the way they animated the cloths and him cutting bits and pieces away has stuck with me for years and years. Bernadette's videos transport me back to being 6 years old watching the movie on VHS for the 3rd time in an afternoon because I just loved the story. I don't think content ever gets more wholesome than this channel. Love the cape too! ❤️
Thank you so much for always having nice captions! It means a lot to me because sometimes it's difficult for me to catch what people are saying without subtitles and whenever I watch these videos I feel such a massive sense of relief. And they're so charming and entertaining! They add so much to the whole experience.
I'm gonna need to bump up my plans to embroider fabric for a take on the AD cape; that shape is just glorious, and capes are such good canvases for embroidery.
So my mom bought these shoes earlier in the year, and I was looking to make her something to go with them for her upcoming birthday. Then I stumble across this video! How perfect
I'm so happy for you! When i first saw the name i was like "it can't be, purely coincidence, many bernadettes in this world, aha". But then it was your actual name! On a shoe!!! AAaah
Historical outerwear is so delicious, isn't it?? My particular historical focus is Elizabethan, and I've been soooo intrigued by their fun little jackets, but so far have been too scared to try to make one myself. Maybe someday! Your cape came out beautifully :) Also, I just love your partnership with American Duchess! What a fantastic pairing! (though I wouldn't mind if they made some Elizabethan shoes again....*ahemhint*)
I've ordered a pair of the Bernadette shoe in the black and cognac and I can't stinkin' wait to wear them! I'm so happy that I've found your channel and other historical/vintage fashion RUclipsrs. For some reason it never occurred to me that there would be vintage and antique fashion sewing channels on such a modern site and that I was just a weirdo for wanting to sew all of these clothes. Now that you and other RUclipsrs have reawakened my sewing spirit, I have started a sewing journey to make my entire closet vintage and historical fashion based. This passed summer I made 2 dresses and a blouse from the 1950s, I would have gotten many more pieces done this summer during quarantine but I am a teacher and was LITERALLY NEVER left alone the entire summer by my superiors demanding I do hundreds of zoom meetings and professional developments in case my job changed this year (it did not and never would have, my school board is literally stupid) just to find that nothing they claimed they set up for this school year to all fail miserably in the first few weeks back. I plan to start learning how to draft since I'm fairly mathematically inclined and should have at least a good go of it. Thanks for all of the cool stuff you do.
Thanks to you being your inspiring self I finished my first mockup ever a few days ago. It is made from an old bedsheet, is bulky in the weirdest areas and the print is horrible. Still, I absolutely love it and intend to wear it when no one is around to see me. Thank you so much for providing motivation and inspiration for everyone who is interested in sewing. You are amazing! Greetings from Germany 😊❤️
Every time I watch your videos I gain an appreciation for clothing. I am not someone who is into fast fashion. I never have been. I like minimalistic but classic/timeless wardrobes. Over the past few years, I have read more about companies and their ethics and that now plays a larger role in where I purchase items from, but sometimes the price can be daunting. Watching you make a single garment reminds me how much work, time, and materials actually goes into making a product of quality and that the price tag is worth it. I wish I had the talent and patience you do. I understand no one wakes up with the ability to make something this grand, but I don't have the patience for sewing. The most I can do is a pillow, and even them I sew them together via machine (and I hate sewing machines, mainly because I am horrible at using them). I just wanted to say thanking for another wonderful video
the beauty, the aesthetic, the perfectly coordinated cape and shoes, I'm speechless. now I need to save up every penny to buy them, Bernadette and AD team you chose darn well. ❤️
Saw the cape pattern a while back, and thought, "Yep, I gotta make that", then saw the Londoneer shoes, and "Yep, I gotta wear that too"... and oh my god you are my aesthetic and inspiration
My mother was a talented seamstress. She could sew the tiniest most precise stitches even though her hands seemed to be flying. As a child, I thought her hands were magical. Thank you, Bernadette Banner for posting your videos; it's like watching my mother's hands once again.
I'm so excited cos I already made this cape. This has never happened before, I've never had a RUclipsr I watch do a video with a pattern I've already made. idk why I'm excited but I am.
I get a kick out of how much you consider hand sewing to be an indulgent luxury! 😆 I lived off grid for about ten years in a mud & straw house which I built with my own two hands, and made garments by hand (even bridesmaid clothes for my two daughters). I like sewing by hand, and agree that it feels like you have more control over the result than with machine stitching. I enjoy your videos, and always stay till the end. I watch them while I knit and crochet sweaters for my new winter wardrobe--my most recent endeavors-- and appreciate your company. You are a very pleasant companion.
When AD came out with the cape pattern, I was firstly hugely disappointed, of myself obviously, because I have the image of the wrap cape saved for yeeeeeeeears, so I was angry, that I did not manage it before suddenly everybody is doing it. :) And the copper/gold black combo is my most favourite so far.. So lets see if I will be ready for this year's winter.
I think it would just be so fun to find Bernadette crafting a dress inspired by the character Midna one day because, like her, she is a dark-themed magical QUEEN.
I particularly love when Bernadette is describing her process in voiceover and says something is “felled down neatly.” I look forward to the day when something is felled down with wild abandon.

She always plays nice music in her videos. They work so nice with the subject. Bernadette is a thinker and she cares to put out quality in whatever she does.
her captions are the best of any youtuber i watch (twoset violin is in second place)
“Edwardian-Hogwarts-criminal-mastermind vibes”… I busted out laughing. Your videos always make me laugh. It came out beautiful!
Fabulous clothes and shoes aside, you can really tell how much thought goes into the cinematography and how much it's improved. Don't think we don't notice these things, it just makes the videos even more fun to watch.
I love watching RUclipsrs change their editing and cinematography because it really shows how much effort and care they put into their work!! mad respect
@Bones - I agree. Ms Banner is as gifted a videographer as she is an historical sewer.
Yes! Her storytelling is so wonderful!
The candle extinguishing!
@@undyingsaltedfish753 I for one was amazed Bernadette didn't use a brass candle snuffer.

Such a sweet comment. Hope she sees these great tips!
The easiest thing she could do it turn around. Have the windows be behind the camera.
@@MamaMOB that's not very aesthetically pleasing. Two or more sources of light makes it look much nicer. Reflecting natural light would look better here, as it's just bouncing around the natural light.

You should've put secret pockets into the arm covers. For daggers, hand crossbows and poison.
Oh what an amazing idea!!
Poison Pockets.......perfect
How do you know she didn't? If she showed them, wouldn't be a secret .....

I can’t be the only one just admiring how gentle and absolutely perfect Bernadette is 🥺 she’s so gentle with everything she does and her attitude and asthetic is amazing and I wanna be her friend so bad ;-;
Bernadette: talks about the trumpetty heel in historical shoes.
Flamenco aficionados: Ah yes, a Garrucha heel.
NeRethil Wolfsson Also historically known as a Louis heel after King Louis XIV, I believe.
In Ballroom dancing/ dancesport shoes, it is known as "the flared heel"
How is this different than a "Cuban heel"?
@@madelinegutierrez1720 Apparently the Cuban heel doesn't flare (had to check and on *most* references the Cubano is straight)
Lol apparently it has a *few* names
All you need is patience. With the ‘stuff’ and yourself.
I think this is her first video that doesn’t contain the word “anon”.
Is it? (Haven't finished yet) Inconceivable!
She'll use it again anon.
oh shit!
2020 really is going to heck in a handbasket.
@skeschels - She made up for the oversight by using "whilst".
Petition for Bernadette to make a actually historically accurate movie!
And pay her handsomely and give her all the time she needs for research and design. And then we make that a normal occurence for all historical movies.
Petition to setup a company to produce this masterpiece
Who could say no to that? And also, only get actors who would continue to wear the clothes after the film, to prevent waisting resources and workmanship!
@@Mark-hf6uf or once production wraps, auction or sell them with proceeds going to charity (I'd probably suggest a homeless charity)
A norse reenactment company just finished fund raising to do that. Grimfrost is making a historically accurate film on Viking and Norsemen.

It’s finally confirmed, I need a sewing machine to make a cape, and all the historical inspired clothes. Just need to do the thing.
I mean...you don't *need* a sewing machine... 😏
@@bernadettebanner just need to get some fabric then....
I just got a hundred year old singer with foot-pedal and immediately put the electric machine in the attic. It sews so much better it's not even funny. It's gorgeous and unbreakable, maybe you'll like it, too! Edit: it was cheap as well, I'm over the moon!
I got my start a few months ago by hand sewing masks. Practical, quick, instructive 👌
its confirmed, we need more cape videos so everyone can find the practical cape design that best suit their life

Also me: considering spending almost an entire week's pay cheque on shoes ($273 New Zealand dollars exl taxes and shipping)

Why is this so relatable?
Thank you so much for giving an "orthopedic" review of wearing these shoes. Congratulations on such a lovely collaboration!
"Edwardian Hogwarts". Yes, that's exactly what I thought when I saw this cape and what I need to do now.
Looks at the wool that I’ve been struggling to work out what to make with it: *grins*.
"Edwardian-Hogwarts-criminal-mastermind vibes"
Peak!

You need to, it's amazing and actually a lot simpler than I thought. You won't regret it!
I wore a lovely ankle-length cape throughout college. I'd made it for cold days at the renfaire, then my actual coat died and I was a poor college student... so cape it was! It was so warm, and every single day felt like I was going to Hogwarts.
So true
Seriously… your hand top stitching is so lovely. Why would anyone machine top stitch when they can hand sew with this type of precision. This is just stunning.
The footage with the candle is so aesthetically appealing!
These shoes came out at the exact time that I was seriously considering buying some American Duchess shoes and now I can clearly see which pair is at the top of my list. They are so stunning!
I'm not usually a fan of two-tone shoes, but omg, these shoes are absolutely stunning! Those stripes are incredible!

Your happy little wiggle as you were showing off the cape made my day, thank you for being, unapologetically, your adorably dorky self .

Let's bring capes back in 2020 pls. We need this in these trying times
I love capes but I don’t have enough social confidence to wear them in public so would be real nice if everyone was wearing them
If it didn't feel like the sun was three feet away from my head, I would wear one outside 😄
I just made my first cape, I am ready to join this cause
I just adore this so much! I must also add that while sewing 100 masks for our friends wedding I had your videos on auto play and felt like I had a sewing buddy. It was dark and gloomy here for many of the days and that just felt so perfect with your aesthetic and music choices. Thank you 😊
Me: Oh, shoes. too bad i never see shoes in my size--THEY COME IN SIZE 12. THE HYPE IS REAL. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
As a size elevener, i can relate.
As a 9 double wide/ 10 wide teenager I can very much relate.
And here I am at the other end of the size spectrum: "They come in a smaller size than a 6!!!!!"
Also at the other end of the spectrum, squeeing because THEY COME IN SIZE 5!!!
Size 12 here! I feel you!
I can definitely say that the effort you've put into putting more of a story into your videos is absolutely visible.

Your closed captioning is on point, as per usual.
That cape is like a villainous hufflepuff’s dream. 🥺🥺
As a Hufflepuff myself, I love this comment!
Ok but matching up blowing out the candle with the beat drop *chef’s kiss*
Wonderful video! The little dance during your modelling shots reminded me of Morgan Donner. Beautiful cape and shoes. Thank you.

@@bernadettebanner Oh ask them for some historically accurate evening wear shoes as well!
I remember seeing the name of the shoes and thought “I wonder if those are named after miss banner?” Low and behold!! Lol they’re amazing!
Honestly hearing and seeing Bernadette sew things is so calming. She could do ASMR !
Are you telling me that this isn't ASMR?
Edwardian fashion is the best. The collars. The collars are everything.
I think it would just be so fun to find Bernadette crafting a dress inspired by the character Midna one day because, like her, she is a dark-themed magical QUEEN.
That cape is just glorious and I need it in my life as well. And the shoes!!! omg I love the ivory x black ones. They are so perfect
