I've been trying to figure out how to record this kind of stuff for my own videos for SO LONG! This is absolutely the best tutorial I've seen, and it's really creative and well thought-out! Thank you so much!!!
Yeah, it's actually pretty basic but the BIGGEST thing (in terms of final video quality) is the AE/AF lock on the recording camera and adjusting the brightness so that what you see on the camera more or less matches what you see on the actual 3DS.
I was just thinking use a little Logitech 1080p 60fps webcam, get cardboard or maybe design a 3D plastic box frame that goes from the webcam to JUST the top screen, like a little box framing around the top screen. Plug the webcam into ANY computer type IMO, best thing would be a PC but people are people. Open up a free VERY VERSATILE program called Open Broadcast Software, otherwise known as OBS. Look at the Laptop/PC screen, play the game. Moving the 3DS isn't an issue as you already have a frame for the game that won't even be able to go out of focus.
Bring a box the cut out the plays where there is joysticks and buttons and also cut the box place where there is the screen then bring a stand then put your phone and record. If you are recording on iPad or tablet then some books that fit size of your iPad or tablet then use your way to do it. Need more help tell me or I’ll do a video tutorial how to do it. Have a nice day
This video was amazing! I never knew you could use a computer to record 3DS audio, let alone use quicktime to capture video from your phone! Thank you so much!!!
Amazing set up and very good instructional video. I wouldn't have guessed that the gameplay was recorded on a phone. My only issue is I'm not sure I could play comfortably with the tripod in the way.
Very well presented tutorial, and also a safe method of recording too-since I'm never one to like making risky tweaks to my N3DS or its software (capture card, homebrew, etc). Will definitely give this a shot, thank you :)
@@wyxyr it is risky if you don't know what you're doing, and there are homebrew applications that stream video output through wifi to software on your computer

This is probably the best possible option since capture methods for 3DS are becoming increasingly rare these days. Although, recording for the second screen, along with DS games, might not be so ideal here. In that case, just get camera glasses.
I'm checking this out for my daughter. Looks easy enough once we get a couple of stands and jacks. I don't know if I can crop on my free video editing software because I've never tried, but I wonder if we can zoom in the phone camera for a more primitive but workable approach. Thanks for the easy-to-follow explanation!
That's not a Laptop, that's a MacBook... Therefore I cannot do this :( Actually, it's not like it matters since I don't have a stand for my phone, my Phone won't connect to my PC via USB anymore for some reason, and I don't have a stand for my 3DS.
And there's the fact that I don't have an editing software to use Overlays on... Windows Movie Maker is actually a very solid program, once you understand it, but the lack of layers and overlays is a huge problem.
If you have an iPad you can just get two stacks of books, lean iPad against closest stack and put 3ds on furthest stack and adjust the 3ds stack’s height so you can film the whole screen
4 years later after hearing that 3ds shop will end in March 2023, I finally found this video. The only way I can finally record my 3ds games without using a capture card Device or installing a homebrew. I don't have to worry about risking thousands of dollars or losing my save data anymore. Thank you!
Hi Mori, I know this video is old but I'm desperate -- I am trying to use your method to record gameplay on my 2DS but I can't for the life of me get my computer to pick up the audio from an aux cord. It seems like macs have limited what they view as audio input nowadays. I've tried aux to usb-c with no luck. I was wondering if you have any advice or if your method has changed at all? Either way, thank you for all of your helpful and informative videos, you're the best!
For anyone with this same problem looking through the comments: I've figured it out! I got an aux cord AND a (traditional) USB to audio jack "sound card adapter" off of amazon (mine was like $15). I plugged the aux cord into the headphone jack of the 2/3DS (like Mori says to do) and plugged the other end into the "microphone" port on the USB adapter which is plugged into my computer. My computer recognized it as an audio input option in OBS and it seems like it's recognizing the sound!
It actually depends on how dark the room is that you are recording. I would suggest if it is morning to set it at full brightness. But if you can put something over the window or it's dark out, only use 2 or 3 brightness.
What I learned from this video: That my iPhone has an exposure and focus lock and that I can change the brightness there, I never thought of that before 😂😂😂 But I think there are way too many better Lets Players out there so no need to also start doing it so I‘ll pass on the rest of the information xD
for those who still want to do this now and you don't have a Mac, there are some free software for Windows computer's that allows you to mirror your screen to your windows computer, or if you have a bit of money to invest, get an hdmi adapter for your phone and some $20 capture card from amazon
Katie Sparkles looks like he's on iMovie or final cut. I don't think this is really doable on a windows computer, as it doesn't allow screen capturing phones on QuickTime, either :(
3DS Neat! Since the Nintendo Switch pad has its own stand I can record it while playing it, it tested it out doing MK8D, and the results weren't all that bad at all, I actually used my 3DS stand like the one you used for my phone to record the footage...
The idea is good, I've been looking for something like this. But I move by playing, will it be my hands or just myself. Being forced to stay at the same place all the time will get really uncomfortable, especially because I want to record speedruns one day, and I'm not the person to do breaks in the speedrun, it destroys the feeling and flow. It's still a good solution, and if you are happy with it, then it is completely fine ^^
Do you have a way of recording the touch screen too or is it just the main screen only? I ask cuz i'm thinking of recording some pokemon omega ruby/Y/sun/Ult sun this way. Nice vid though.
Mhm, and try using a screen recorder like Bandicam. If time limit is a problem and you dislike watermarks, transfer the video to your mobile device and crop it using ezgif on Puffin (or do that on your computer before transfering) Then, you can merge the cropped videos together using any merger. This probably made no sense
Download TeamViewer on the PC, download TeamViewer QuickSupport on the phone, read the app instructions on connecting and use a screen recorder on the pc itself.
Unfortunately, this method only works on Mac. QuickTime on Windows doesn't have a Screen Recording option. Is there a similar way to do this on Windows?

Kitty9chan because they already have them in warehouses and in the store before they discontinued. Discontinued doesn't mean sold out everywhere, it just means they aren't making new ones so when a store eventually sells out of all their cards they won't get more

Depends on your android camera app, but yes. You just have to play around with the settings in your camera app. You ideally want to lock the exposure, and disable face detection & autofocus so the picture doesn't change whilst you play. On iPhones you disable face detection by setting it to time lapse, and lock the exposure by tapping and holding on the screen. So long as you can work out how to do that on your manufacturer's camera app, then every phone I've tried in the last 5+ years will appear as a camera to a computer over USB if the camera app is open :)

Iggy the crazy koopa bruh I sure if you wanna Start recording your 3DS then you most likely have a 3DS, a Phone, a computer of some sort, a charger for your phone; and almost everyone has an auxiliary cord, an auxiliary cord ain’t even that expensive. The only thing I would think you would need to buy is maybe the tripod which is way less money then a capture card; and the stand you know you could probably build one yourself.
you probably need a decent PC no matter what but if you hack your 3DS you could just stream the video to your PC
This can also be done on the Nintendo switch!
yes
Y U No Windows/Android recording tutorial?
Because he probably doesn't own a Windows PC or Android device
Thank you Mayor Mori this video helped me out a lot!
ATTENTION ALL WINDOWS USERS! THERE IS A FREE APPLICATION CALLED LONELY SCREEN THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD. IT CONNECTS TO YOUR IPAD/IPHONE AND SHOWS THAT SCREEN ON YOUR COMPUTER. THEN USE OBS OR SOME OTHER RECORDING SOFTWARE TO RECORD
Ok I think it’s easier just to use a capture card
SSJ Jake and cheaper
But I use android. And windows. And I don't have an aux. Or a stand. So I'll use my GoPro.

Well, first of all, you take out your phone, record your screen as you play, and then upload it in 144p.
