Thank you for this little piece of gold! My son upload Vegas Pro to my computer and we are trying to learn how to edit from a pc, rather than a phone. We have used an old android stylo 4 for all our videos for two years and have passed 20K subs. Now that our channel is really growing, we are ready to improve our editing and give our subscribers a better experience. Fingers crossed this middle aged lady can figure it out, lol. Thank you, we never could have don this without you! Take care
Awesome, congrats! Vegas is great software - I originally taught myself editing using Vegas Video a long time ago. We’re talking pre RUclips days, so not a lot of tutorial videos out there, but it was pretty intuitive, and over all, nice editing software. I moved on to FinalCut Pro, now PremierPro, and haven’t used Vegas in years, but I imagine it has only improved. I’m sure you’ll master it! Good luck! 👍😁
This is great, Nick. The best videos use all of these (and a lot more) in ways the viewer doesnt even notice. What I find is that RUclips in general is the last place to study videos for these because videos move so fast (good luck figuring out where Mr Beast uses these things!). But if you analyze traditional films (even Marvel movies!), its very noticable, especially in dialogue scenes. A good example of a youtuber to analyze for good filmmaking is Van Neistat (Casey's brother). His videos are a lot slower and deliberate, and reintroduce the pacing of how this is done in traditional films to youtube. Good job, Nick!
I have been using Camtasia almost from the time i started my channel! I agree, it is easy to learn and once you do learn it, you will love using it! Great videos Nick!

Great video, thanks Nick. I really needed to see this. I’ve seen other videos on J and L cuts but this is the first time I actually understood it. Super valuable, thanks again.
One trick that I've started using on zoom cuts is to apply a slight sharpening effect on your zoom in clips. When you zoom in you lose resolution, so unless your source clips are much higher res than your output clips adding a sharpen effect can clean up a bit of the fuzziness you get on a zoom cut when you punch in. I use premiere to edit my stuff but I'm sure many other tools would have the ability to tweak sharpness for individual clips to achieve this effect.
My software doesn't have a sharpen effect (or maybe it does in filters, I'll double check), but I reduce the brightness -13 and increase the contrast +14, and this makes a significant difference cleaning up those fuzzy pixels.
@@jackiedan2450 Nice tip. Thanks for sharing for those that may not have a sharpen effect in their editing software. Always great to have more than one way to achieve an effect. 👍

Nice video Nick with clear explanations for people getting started or looking to improve. Unless you are aiming for this feeling.

Yes, please! Audio is definitely my kryptonite, especially since I have to use the camera’s internal microphone for now because I’m not able to upgrade to an external mic, which would also require a camera upgrade.
@@TNTOutdoors4U if a new camera is outside your budget you could get an audio recorder. I use a Zoom H2n and plug my mic into it. I use the auto-sync feature in Kdenlive to align the audio with the video.
Good tips but what I really need is a new computer. What should we look for in terms of performance in a device? Being limited to Windows really sucks but I'll make due for now. Recently added some teasers to some of my videos.
Great video as always, Nick! I use zoom and jump cuts all the time! I use it to maintain pace, and on my motorcycles, switching from Camera 1 to Camera 2 hides it LOL. I LOVE using J and L cuts too - they can hide errant movements during the part you cut out [I really ought to stop doing that anyway]. And I don't think you mentioned it, but Zoom cuts can be used to emphasize something you want to highlight for the viewer.
@@NickNimmin Thanks - I thought I got that tip from you! Just have to remember, you can't just willy-nilly use them - they look out of place. A friend of mine commented on one of my recent vids compared to someone else in our niche who had started using them, and the other guys' cuts just seemed awkward.
Awesome Nick! thx! I use my iphone and imovie for my videos (Apple poster child!). What do you recommend to process the voice post video production to smooth it out? My audio ,needs work! Thanks!
I tried switching to DaVinci Resolve for a while on another channel, but it's a little overkill for what I want to do, especially the videos for Office Mystic. Camtasia is easy to grasp.
I use zoom cuts all the time to give my audience the best experience since I record my Canva lessons with OBS and know that zooming in to specific areas will assist the learner to know exactly where I'm referring and so it doesn't get stagnant.
Thanks Nick, I just felt that your audio was not in sync with video at some point. Do you record audio separately and then add while editing. Anyways, this was really helpful.
Great as always, Nick! Honestly, I was thinking screen recorder? Like Loom? I was wondering HOW you can use this to record a video. But I see that Cam is not what it is for. Thanks for the clarity...
I need a note book! This is amazing information! Very very useful! Thank you so much for making this video! I am so excited! I have been doing the jump cut, but now I really want to see how to use the Zoom cut! I think it'll be awesome!
Good video. Sound is an art in itself. I've saved myself a bunch of time by getting an ART Voice Channel preamp so that my voice is compressed, de-essed and EQed while I record. Avoids having to import the voice track into audio software to pre-process it. Kdenlive's basic audio tools handle any further fine-tuning. I tried a clip mic but it picks up every little rustle and the sound varies too much as I move my head so now I use a dynamic mic just out of shot.
This is great 👍🏿 I’m nowhere near ready to be editing in this more advanced way but I still found it fascinating 😀 more videos like this would be very welcome 😀
Good pointers, however, the jump cut, I notice them a lot and many also just cut their clips to where the hands are, then they aren't in the same spot, which is how I was taught about this cut, however, the J or L cut helps to hide this, as well as the simple cross fade and I use that when I need to "jump cut". Also, too many channels click at the cut in the audio and it's rather annoying and many need to learn how to bed the music so it does not overwhelm the VO. I agree the jump cut has its place at times, but best not to rely on it as simply a quick way to edit or remove flubs on the lazy all the time. I have done the zoom cut and it's effective as well and also learn to use things like your door as if it's a wipe, so edit the clip just as you open the door, but film it as you open it and then step outside say. That works really well for when you need to go outside. Agree, don't need to be perfect, but you do need to have your video and audio as consistent as possible and be the best as possible so it's viewable to the audience.
Great video, thanks! Audio is definitely my kryptonite, I need to get better at improving my audio quality, especially since for now I’m stuck using the camera internal microphone. My last video had some wind noise, etc. However, I used like 5 different background tracks at varying points throughout the video, which I think adds a lot of dimension. I really like the song clip I used for my ending slide, it’s a really cool track, I’ll probably continue to use that end slide/audio going forward. Anyway, thanks again! 👍😁
I know most things you covered in this video but I'm gonna watch and like and comment anyways because it's Nick Nimmin !! 😃.. I do love these types of videos though.. would like to see more like this
Hi Nick! What would you suggest for audio volume? I struggle with that. I keep the original audio at 0 and the background music at about -25. But it still doesn't sound right on RUclips. What would u suggest?
It depends on what your main audio sounds like. Balancing the two can be challenging so I recommend testing it on a phone, computer and headphones to make sure the levels sound somewhat consistent across all.
Hey Nick, I just saw an ad that said there's a way to start your own RUclips channel that already has an audience built up for you so you don't have to go through the hard work of establishing one yourself. Have you heard of this? What do you know or think about it? Just curious. Thanks Nick.
Buying a channel from someone that has already built up subscribers is actually against RUclips's rules. Don't fall for the trap of "shortcuts" or buying your way to success. Think about a channel "pre-loaded" with subscribers - who are they? Are they people who are likely not interested in the content you want to make? Are they just bot accounts that RUclips will eventually remove? It is a poor foundation to build a channel on.
Nick, how did you do the jumpcut when you move around the screen? I use Camtasia too but don't know how you do that because you're literally moving around?
Essentially its like different takes. I record the first part to one side, then stop, move myself to the other side then record the next part. In the edit I just cut the first part as soon as I've finished my line, and do the same for the beginning of the next part - trim it and have it continue right where the first part left off.
I would be curious in an explainer to video editing tips, reflective to RUclips impressions/watch time. Can video editing out weigh the value of the actual content? The shiny trinket and click baits. Do they really make an impact in the long run?
Editing can make it easier for people to get to the value of the content. If the editing sucks (in certain content types) the viewer won't make it far enough in the video to get to any type of value.
Hello Nick Thank You for the video. Was wondering if you have any content to help out our style of videos. Im so new i dont even know how to describe. I wouldnt call it a vlog. We only use go pro 360 on site so we dont have to worry about pointing camera. But audio is tricky. Hoping one day to make it like a This Old House platform.
A quick tip about your titles. Right now you're putting a lot of info in the front that isn't relevant to the viewer. For example, the number of the video. Don't add those episode numbers to your videos, if you do put them at the very end. But you shouldn't be adding those. Also, you need to restructure your titles. You currently have a recurring thing at the front and then the actual title behind it. You need to put the the real title in front. RUclips cuts off titles in certain places on RUclips so you have to make sure the potential viewer can understand what they might be getting from your video. Next, thumbnails. You have a thumbnail called "bathtub drain". If the video is about a bathtub drain, make the drain the thumbnail not the person in the thumb.
These video editing tips all sound very interesting. However, I myself make 2 of those sort of edits in a majority of my videos: The jump cuts and the zoom cuts, especially when I make adventure videos or calming videos with the use of fictional characters. I use IMovie on my IPad to edit my videos, but sometimes I'll use Windows Movie Maker on my laptop to make videos with. Also, I noticed at the very end of the video, there was an abrupt cut in the middle of your call to action to subscribe and check out other videos of yours. I wondered if that was intentional or unintentional?
I have been using filmora 9 it is always a battle with the "bug splat" or the upload failed. I spend more time attempting to upload the video then actually editing it is beyond frustrating. Does camtasia have similiar issues?
Super tip for ANY editing software - do not use the native upload feature built-in. Often these break as RUclips makes changes and devs are slow to roll out updates. Export your video to your computer, then upload via the RUclips upload flow on their website.
These tips are really helpful!! My editing has been kinda bland lately so this is exactly what I needed to step up my game! Thank you! :)
Happy to help!

Thank you Nick for making this video! This was very useful and I learned something new😊 I would like to see more editing videos like this!😊❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Nick nice video i have in my mind to do on my new videos, now i am sure i will do 😊
Thanks much for such a lovely video 🏆
My pleasure 😊
Interesting topic I watch till the end thanks bro
Great tips here. I think I've been doing L cuts accidentally! Just wondering, is Camtasia easy to get into. I've been using shotcut and openshot.
It is relatively easy.
These are really useful!!
Another great video!
Thank you for your content helped me a lot..
We are here to comment and like and
WE ARE STARTING RIGHT NOW 🤣🔥💪🏽🤙🏼
Please make a video on voice over videos ( only audios and stock footage) how to edit them and synchronize them
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
Very good information here, thank you 😊
My pleasure!
Nick , thank You very much 😊
My pleasure!
Thank you the great tips .
👊 🤓
Great video thank you.
Glad you liked it!
I got a right video at right time sir
Boom! 💥
@@NickNimmin sir How i get more audience
These video editing tips all sound very interesting. However, I myself make 2 of those sort of edits in a majority of my videos: The jump cuts and the zoom cuts, especially when I make adventure videos or calming videos with the use of fictional characters. I use IMovie on my IPad to edit my videos, but sometimes I'll use Windows Movie Maker on my laptop to make videos with. Also, I noticed at the very end of the video, there was an abrupt cut in the middle of your call to action to subscribe and check out other videos of yours. I wondered if that was intentional or unintentional?
It was accidentally cut off. :)
@@NickNimmin Oh okay xD That’s what I thought. Thanks for letting me know. This was a great video by the way, despite the accident
0:00 - Hi Nick. 👋 8:30 - 325th thumbs up from me. 👍 Cheers.
Just about to edit a video then this video pop up LOL. Will be using the J cut now 😀 Thanks Nick
J cut for the win!
