- This is a Slovak Armed Forces 24 Hour MRE - it's acronym: PODAP actually stands for "Emergency Food Ration" in translation. Sparing no nutritional value to the food - there are very few empty sugar calories in this MRE. Very wholesome and natural ingredients and recipes. This rare, interesting, and unusual Military Ration was sent in by Curahee off MREinfo - thanks so much, Marek - this really was an awesome experience!

LET'S GET THIS OUT ONTO A TRAY, NICE™
NICE HISS™
I'LL BE COMING BACK AT YOU WITH SOMETHING NEW OR OLD, ALRIGHT COOL SEE YA™
you know what i like about you, steve? you appreciate little things like cool can openers
it really is a cool can opener... i mean... beats the heck out of the ones GI's used to get back in the day
Lee Buckley Seriously! That's a real deal can opener like I'd find in my grandmothers house. I like the old P-38 for its small size. It gets the job done. Also, easy to keep on a dog tag style necklace. But this is a sturdy, overbuilt can opener. I'd like to try one.
Cmon guys, its just a can opener.

Steve is always happy 😂😂😂😂😂
when you're a millionaire uploading videos once a month, its easy to be happy while filming
Daniel M theres also plenty of millionaires that kill themselves.. how u explain that?

Hi Steve! Slovak guy here. Biggest problem with these PODAPs is no variety, thay are all more or less the same. Every PODAP version has pate, some soup, some rice with meat, some potatoes with meat and same bread and tablet drinks. Soldiers are fed up with these rations in days. We call that bread "polystyrene" :) Sorry for my english and great video as always!
Ján Čarnogurský Uh.. your English is amazing. Probably better then mine. Did I use the right your?
nekocal you did, but not the right "than"
Hi guys, Czech here. From what I've seen, so far only 2 rations had that "křehký plátek" shitty bread - Czech and Slovak LOL. I hate it and it's a shame that we are giving this to our soldiers.
Clarissa Liem In Canada, then...
what do you mean, your sentence read very well. I would even say it read very,,,,,,,, nice!!!!
First, I am from Slovakia and I am surprised just how... Slovak... the whole ration is. The drink tablets? Those can be bought in any shop, exactly the same packaging, the same protective cap, a bit bigger(I guess they are 15 tablet pack in stores). The food that you got was pretty much your regular school/army/socialist factory canteen type of food. The crispbread can also be found in pretty much any shop. I can pretty much go to any shop and buy like 50% of this ration. Its also surprising that our guys are still running around with cans like its 1980s.
Regarding the crispbread ratio. Its because usually, bread is eaten as a side to cabbage and bean soup. So one pack for cabbage, one pack for soup and one pack for liver pate. I mean, you dont have to, but thats my guess of what was the logic of packing 3 packs of bread.
Always love reading the stories from commenters on these vids. Awesome window into life in another country.
Nice!
Can you get those sweet can opener/holder things at a store?
@@Colddirector Yes We can, in other shops with kitchen utensils

Eh, again Lembas :)
You forgot to mention the crisp bread.
And no second breakfast.
Well... In all honesty? Theres an "ancient" slavic (or at least czech of that I am certain as I am one) tradition of giving guests loaf of bread and salt. Usually to travelers. So it fits quite well. :D

*nice* finally, some good fucking food
But Steve likes everything
Yeah, our troops would be getting ancient hardtack and entrees that smell questionable but are technically edible.
Man, I am very happy to see this, I am Slovak :) very nice translation of our texts and I am very happy, that you enjoyed our food :)
and yes, that last food is one of our national foods :)
Okay, but what *is* the dish? What is it called? What would I go looking for if I wanted to find this Slovakian dish in another country?
If you want to find our main traditional food in other countries, your best bet would be Czech. But if you want to order it somewhere else just look for potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon.
Peter Živčic Salute brother from Romania!
motp holy crap I love sheep cheese
I was screaming throughout the video "add some water to that rice!!!"
As a regular rice-eater, that bit pained me so much.
How??? Unless then Assume you have a canteen cup with you.
Same
comm744 I mean they give u a bag and purification tablets sooo
Yes, every Slovak soldier has a canteen called "esus" with metal cuttlery
Hey Steve, hi from Slovakia! :)
You're right, the cabbage with sausage is a traditional meal.
I love your videos, so relaxing. A NICE way to calm down in the evening :)
Just one remark. I noticed you said "Slavic". Well, there is a difference between Slavic and Slovak. Slavic refers to all Slavic nations (Slovakia, Czech Rep, Russia, Serbia, Croatia, etc, etc.), while Slovak refers to Slovakia only.
Looking forward to more videos!
Oh hey I learned something in a RUclips comment section nice but I wonder why the distinction between the Slavic nations and Slovakia
@@mr.wonderfulwisdomouswonde2991 hi. Well, as I explained above. "Slavic nations" is an entire group of nations. "Slovakia" is one of them. It's a specific country.
We can say "Slovakia is one country in the group of Slavic nations".
It's similar to saying "Texas is one state in the group of American states".
Slovak and Slavic are cognates. Both come from Proto-Slavic word "Slověninъ".
Man idk why your video are so relaxing and the gimmicks like " let get that into a tray" or "nice" make me feel just happy so thank you dude
I thought you were dead

GothicaBeauty. And when he says m Kay nice
do you have a boyfriend?
Nice Mkay
I do. Every time. Lol.

Just so you Steve, this ration and its mains were designed to be thrown into boiling water. They have the same style Mess tins as we British do and the stove is to boil water for the cans to be placed in for 3/4 mins...
in the early 80's we made "Ranger Candy" by combining coffee, sugar, and creamer in to a packet. then we'd let it melt on the exhaust manifold till it became a coffee toffee. my fav meal was the spaghetti mixed with an extra cheese packet and heated.
I gotta try this out of morbid curiosity, sounds horrible yet somewhat okay at the same time lmao
Hands down best of all the videos you’ve uploaded. It had everything- cooking , comedy, drama, interesting drinks. Great video
"it might be simple, but it's still - nice!" Steve is the King of MRE segues!
Lunch: 'too dry to cook, needs liquid' I died when you made drinks while saying that but didn't add a splash of water to the warming food.
crzy1gs I know...that was driving me nuts!
that's the best thing about him, he ate all of them without modify anything. well, u want to judge food, you eat them straight away in their original condition so u can know their qualities. haha
Ikram Mohd Noor If he had water for the drinks, he could have added a bit to the meal to make it easier to heat.
crzy1gs i
I don't know if a coincidence or not but i was checking you for new videos yesterday , soon as I got the alert I dropped everything and start watching you man, I love your videos keep it up man.
ok I think you used the stove wrong, I believe that metal part was meant to sit as a topper for the can it came in to give legs to space between the cooking stove can and the food can so air can get to the fire tabs
actually in Slovakia lunch is the main meal of the day and it consists of a soup and entreé, breakfast are usually just light, bread and paté is just enough :) I'm really happy though that you liked the soup so much, it's one of my favourites! that rice dish however is our take on risotto :D in this case adding a little bit of water wouldn't probably hurt :D
How do you make that soup ? Do you have a recipe ?
Katarína Anďalová Just across Tatras in Poland we do exactly the same . Light breakfast , two course dinner around 2pm and light supper .
PLEASE explain the cold fizzy 'tea.'
Kinda "obviously" same in Czechia for those wondering.
@@redwingrob1036 For real. That’s wild lol.
Loved this MRE! Nice to see MRE's that are still made locally and do not just bought straight from some multi-national supplier.
These MREs got retired and now we buy from multi-national supplier :( Now we have the same MRE as Swedish army. They are good, but they are no longer our local meals, mostly curry, chilli, chinese and thai foods...

Not only is this an inspiring ration, but I've also noticed over the course of all your videos the quality in editing and post production. You are consistently developing towards a reliable source of historical documentation and entertainment!
Maybe the second course rice based dish was only supposed to have a light seal break to relive pressure. By having the remaining majority lid cover the dish while it heated, moisture would retain enough to hydrate the rice grains?
So impressed with your level of preparation to get the Slovak food names translated!
Steve is fluent in MRE
I liked the cabbage with sausage and potatoes so much from this video that I made it at home. It turned out really good, and I picked up some of those fizzy tablets to go with it and damn it was good. Now if I could figure out how to tin stuff to preserve it, I could totally stock up on these things.
I might be 4 years late, but Mason jars are easier and you can reuse them afterwards! I’ve never done it myself, but I’ve watched videos about it and it seems very straightforward.
@@Sniperboy5551never too late, its nice to get reminded of this video. I actually made this just four days ago! Had some wasa crispbreads and some non-alcoholic beers with it, it was really good. The only thing is it dont last long enough to need to be stored for a long time 😂
DUDE, the whole time i was hoping you would dip the pate/crisp-bread in the greenbean soup

The cabbage, sausage, pepper, potato dish is a classic eastern European dish. There as many varieties as there are people who eat it. Super easy to make at home if anyone feels inclined.
TigerAnn dumb question maybe but is there a name for this dish?
franta kutáč thanks!! :)
Could substitute “spam” or ham for the sausage in the above dish???

flatbread's there because in the Eastern parts of Europe and i presume most of the Slav countries you eat almost every meal with bread, soups/broth's, stews/casseroles. Most of the savory dishes.
add water to the rice on the cover it said dehydrate grain

I from slovakia and im happy to see how you try ours mre :) DOBRÁ PRÁCA !! :)
Please let me preface my comment by stating that my opinion is in no way intended to be offensive or insulting. Sir, in the field, I am absolutely certain that the recipient of that meal would have had the common sense to add a little water to make the meal easier to heat and probably add some savor. Thinking that the meal has to be served as you have shown is ridiculous. As a veteran, I tell you from experience that every soldier has some form of mess kit with them and does not solely rely on heat rations or eating from bags or tins. Interesting videos. God bless brother.
Hey Bobby, thank you for your service. This was a funny review, I made many mistakes. Good old days, about 6 or 7 years ago now! I found another Slovak PODAP ration - cost $164. We shall see if it arrives safely - looking forward to re-doing this one and not making those same mistakes. Thank you for your comment, as it's constructive and respectful. Take care & see you around.
Am I the only one impressed by Steve's apparent functional understanding of every language under the sun? Like he can identify food by the labelling nine times out of ten.
Next time you have a dry, dense main like that, add just alittle water before heating it. It will help alot.
