As a surgeon, Mer knew she had to break the bad news in the most direct way possible, so that the patient's families do not have the false impression that there is still hope. She didn't say "Daddy is in heaven" or sth like that. She said it very clear "Daddy died". The pain in Mer's eyes when she said those words was unimaginable, but the kids needed to know the truth.
Kayla Mercer it’s what you believe. Believing in heaven is perfectly okay. I believe that after you die, there is nothing. you will have no consciousness. As much as I hate it and don’t want it to be true, I also think it’s the natural order of things. that’s why we should enjoy life while we’re still living it.

I agree. Her acting is almost perfect. I just don't understand why Meredith was basically only looking at Zola while her other (younger) child just stood there looking sad. Meredith seemed to care about Zola's reaction only. That took me out of the scene completely, despite how great the acting was.
Zola has it rough so many of her “uncles” and “aunts” have died or gotten sick or just picked up and left . At this point she’s going to have attachment issues. I HOPE years later they make her life story 🙏
They show that she’s wise beyond her years. There was one scene that I love where Zola asks Meredith “Why don’t you want to date?” and Meredith says “Because I’ve already had one great love in my life. And I don’t want to be greedy.” And Zola responds “I don’t think it’s like eating candy. I don’t think you can fill up on it, or have too much of it.”
Apparently workingg with Dempsey was hell, and he was a horrible person on set. People say he is a total diva and extremely entitled. Same with why Burke's actor left - he was extremely rude, was super homophobic, and outed Geroge's actor as gay (reason why he left, after being fed up with Burke's actor's behavior). The pain and anger in Meredith’s voice is heartbreaking, she lost the person who she loved most in this world. What’s worse is that she had to tell her children that no one could save Derek and that he’s dead. Meredith was so broken that everything she ever fought for and loved had just been taken away from her, the light in her eyes has disappeared and the smile that she had is no longer there. She will never get that back because the person who made her feel that way is gone forever. They deserved a better ending. I don’t know why I chose to relive this moment. 😭😢
we know it's hurt her when she acted like that, even when everyone died she still can say the word they died without hestitating in this one she paused so many times to say it and that's when we knew how much his death affected her 💔

Zola is a Daddy's girl. It was Derek who saw her first and that day he immediately decided that they would adopt her. He could not let go of her when the social worker gave them a minute to say goodbye, when Zola was taken away from them (temporarily). He's been kissing her and hugged her so tight.
I cried during this scene, Meredith is trying to hold her shit together for her babies when all she wants to do is break down..... She lost so many people that it’s just devastating
Claire Fairbanks There was no other way to explain Derek's absence from the show...he never would've simply left or abandon his wife and children. When Patrick Dempsey decided to leave the show, they HAD to kill off his character. No other explanation would've made sense.
Well logically for the actor yes he had to die... but considering he was looking for his ringing phone in the middle of the road, in a curve, it was definitely Derek's fault he got hit.
I personally loved how simple and drama-free this episode was. I don’t understand how people felt this was boring. It was a nice break from everything going on with the 500 other characters and took this show back it’s roots.
As a doctor, it is particularly painful for me when Zola says: "you fix everyone" because it is true, we have been able to fix so many people and sometimes we cannot fix the people we love the most and we must let them go. This scene is the real life of a doctor.
Yea they had to go they wanted to go and the thing is I think it’s sad to see them go but as well but then new people come in with new story lines and we love them I am a die hard and if you think greys anatomy got bad your not a true fan
A lot of people said Meredith showed more emotions when Derek died in her dream, But that’s not the case. When Derek actually died, for real. Meredith was in SO much pain, it was like she went numb right then and there. The agony was a lot. We didn’t physically see Meredith, but when she left Seattle you knew she was torn apart from the inside out. But she had to be strong for her babies, and I bet when Ellis came into the mix, it gave her a little sense of peace. As the show continues we see more and more into what she had and is going through all the time. Meredith is one of my favorites, her character development is truly amazing!🥺❤️
i can’t even see Merediths face anymore bc always when i loook at her i have to cry she had to go through so much she don’t deserve that like let her be happy and don’t break her again writers

the fact that this scene still makes me sob every time is proof that ellen's an incredibly talented actress. you can hear the heartbreak in her voice, it's almost as if she's lost the love of her life in real life as well. most actresses would not be able to fake that emotion so well, it's truly impressive
It’s been years and I will never stop sobbing over this scene. This scene broke my heart. No parent should ever have to tell their kids that they father has died.
@@jasminebritting4310they didn’t cut it. This specific scene happened in a later episode when the doctors are remembering personal losses while performing surgery. It didn’t happen in the episode where Derek died
That little girl was so convincing. It broke my heart. I’ll never forget when my husband collapsed, and they tried to revive him. Right in our bedroom. Our two kids witnessed the whole thing. It was the worst day of my life.
While this scene is emotional, I can't help but realize, they didn't wanna spend much on young Bailey cause speaking characters need to be paid more. So he's just standing there. This makes me chuckle even in this emotional scene
I’ve never gotten to this part but Zola’s innocent voice asking if her dad was coming back not knowing wjay happened makes it even more heartbreaking. 💔
It was that way when I watched Derek’s death scene. I never stop thinking about it after I saw it. It felt personal. It felt real. That kinda acting deserve more recognition
Zola’s heartbroken face just gifted me so badly. Is it wrong that I want to sob with them? I know how hard it is to loose someone, so I just want to be there with them, hugging them tightly. But the only difference is I didn’t get to say goodbye or even attend their funeral. I think that’s why the Grey’s Anatomy deaths hurt even more than other people... 😭💔
Omg this hurts! I’m all emotional now. And Zola just hugging her broke my heart. I felt like she was saying that Derik was dead was to drive it home for herself as well as her kids.
This is so sad am hurting right how I have no clue why I'm watching this. I just lost my cousin and her friend in a car accident this year January 2 2016 she was my bestfriend I use to hate when I would you for walks with my grand dad and she use to come now I just want her back i need her she was my angle I love her she use to allways have a smile on her face I just want her back this is our first chrismas without her
This scene broke me. I can't imagine telling my children someone they loved is dead. My son LOVES his great grandmother, she is almost in her 70's, i can already tell that we would both be crying and I would be broken trying to tell him.
What’s so sad is that I think Meredith was pregnant with Derek’s child here and he didn’t even know. He died thinking he was a father of two, not a father to be. He will never meet his other child and he didn’t even know Meredith was pregnant.
Zola knows Meredith is an AMAZING surgeon and she really doesn’t understand that Meredith tried to save him but couldn’t to have the skill that Meredith has and to be unable to save the man she lives the father of her children would suck so much
you can honestly see that it’s killing ellen not to be just acting in this scene she i believe she missed patrick more than anyone will ever know and that these tears of course for the scene but we’re also very real

I love the music to this. So haunting.
Dude, when Meredith said “ Daddy died” that hurt
Omg this hurts! I’m all emotional now. And Zola just hugging her broke my heart. I felt like she was saying that Derik was dead was to drive it home for herself as well as her kids.
Meredith is not an emotional person, but when she does she show emotion, you know that it’s bad
You can feel their pain through the screen . Good acting
Derek dying was the first and only time where I legit felt numb from a fictional characters death.
This is so sad am hurting right how I have no clue why I'm watching this. I just lost my cousin and her friend in a car accident this year January 2 2016 she was my bestfriend I use to hate when I would you for walks with my grand dad and she use to come now I just want her back i need her she was my angle I love her she use to allways have a smile on her face I just want her back this is our first chrismas without her
I’m sorry for your lost! Stay strong! ♥️
That could be true because Ellis was conceived the day before the accident.
When your being told someone died even if it’s not someone you know it HURTS it is the WORST PAIN EVER and this This brings back memorys
It's 2020 and I am still sad about his death
I don’t know why I am watching this again. I had almost forgotten how how heartbroken I was.
At 1:26 when Meredith literally chokes up because she can’t bring herself to say Derek is dead for a second really got me.
How this show has grown. From season one to now. It has been such an emotional roller coaster
She is so strong❤️🥺
Zola knows Meredith is an AMAZING surgeon and she really doesn’t understand that Meredith tried to save him but couldn’t to have the skill that Meredith has and to be unable to save the man she lives the father of her children would suck so much
tbh i didn’t even cry when he died but i cried my eyes out in this scene
It’s 2024 and I’m watching this again 🥹
i always think i can manage to watch it without crying until zola says "you fix everyone!"
“Daddy died” i held myself together till i heard that 💔
it made me cry he was my favorite
Zola broke my heart when she asked “are the doctors fixing him” I’m ligit crying 😢
this absolutely broke me
the struggle for her to say the words is what made my heart hurt even more
This one of the saddest moments in Grey’s Anatomy. 😭
Oh. poor Meredith. Despite how hard she tries, this is a wound that may never heal fully. I feel so bad for the kids too.
you can honestly see that it’s killing ellen not to be just acting in this scene she i believe she missed patrick more than anyone will ever know and that these tears of course for the scene but we’re also very real
Derek really ever loved Meredith he would never hurt her they were truly soulmates
MY EYES ARE SWEATING
why do i keep watching this again? It makes me sob every single time
This scene broke my heart😭
mark’s death and when she said “daddy died” really got to me
