    You don't have to remove the whole plastic shield. Just remove the 4 rear bolts, then you can fold the rear section forward, and you'll have access to the drain bolt and oil filter. Nissan designed it like that so you don't have to take off the whole thing.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  7 лет назад +15

      Thanks for the comment!
      I understand that you don't need to take the plastic shield off, but when on jack stands it gives you so much more room if you undo the extra 4 screws and take it completely out of the way. Also, I typically have a quick look for any oil leaks/sweats around the rear of the engine.
      As always, do what works for you :)

    The hardest part of doing an oil change on the G37x is the splash guard. Everything else is a cake walk! I have a video request and would love to see you do a video on doing a coolant change / flush on the G37!

      @MotorvateDIY  4 года назад

      Hey Tony Figueroa,
      Thank you for your kind words!!
      That is an excellent question and I don't know what the answer is.
      It would be a good idea to check your oil pressure:
      Oil Pressure Check: G37/370z - Motorvate's DIY Garage Ep. 18
      ruclips.net/video/-Io6ryxWFtQ/видео.html
      Or install an oil pressure gauge, so you can monitor the oil pressure.
      For the last 2 years I have been doing some research on a easy way to check for this issue, without checking oil pressure or taking anything apart. In the next few months, I hope to have enough data to see if my method is accurate.

      Not in 2012 or newer. 2012 was the year Nissan replaced them with metal gaskets. It was 2011 and older that had the paper gaskets installed that are prone to blow out.

      You should double check, but on my G37 Sedan there is about 6" of room at the front jacking point. If you can find a jack that has a lowered height less than that, you should be good.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  3 года назад

      It can be difficult to tell the difference between a "gas" smell and the normal "combustion" smell... so a little "gas" smell is normal.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Taz,
      Your best bet is to spend a little time at myg37.com and get a feel for common issues.
      I have only had my car for 18 months, but overall there no real common issues that I know of.
      The biggest worry is that a few engines have a gasket issue on the rear timing cover and it creates an internal oil leak that results in lower oil pressure. I don't think it is very common, so the odds are in you favour.
      Be prepared for about 20-22 MPG fuel economy on premium fuel, depending on how hard your drive and how much city driving you do.

  • @peterkim2987

    For vq35hr or vq37hr, do you think it’s still safe to use 5w30 if i use high rpm for many times compare to using 5w40?
    And how often do you change engine oil??

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  3 года назад +2

      Hey Peter Kim,
      If you are thinking that a "thicker" oil will offer more protection, it may BUT it will also increase oil pressure a little and use more power to pump the engine oil.
      I use my G37 for the odd track day and drag racing and only use a synthetic 5W30. My engine sees 7,000 RPM+ fairly often.
      I don't think there is any need for a thicker oil on a stock HR/VHR engine. If you have forced induction, then maybe. Your tuner/engine builder will know.
      If you want to know EXACTLY is going in inside your engine, get a used engine oil analysis. It will tell you EVERYTHING you want to know and more. I typically use BlackStone (www.blackstone-labs.com/) and pay the extra $10 for the "TBN" test. (this tells you how much oil life is left)
      Here is an episode where all is explained: ruclips.net/video/uvExyfxzsRo/видео.html
      I also use the test results of the used engine oil analysis to determine when to change my oil.
      For my car, that is every 7,000 miles (11,000 KM) At that point my TBN number is around 2.0 which means the oil additives are just about used up.
      The service manual recommends oil changes every 7,500 (12,000 KM) or 6 months if the driving is mostly 15+ minutes long on a paved road (aka schedule 2)
      The other recommendation is known as "schedule 1" and is every 3,750 miles (6,000 KM) or every 3 months for more harsher conditions (dirt/dusy roads, lots of engine idling, stop and go traffic, short trips)
      So... either get your engine oil analyzed or change it every 4,000 or so miles - just to be safe :)

    What is your opinion on Nissan's Ester Oil or other brands of Ester oils for the VVEL system (apparently without ester can cause ticking and increased wear.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Dougie LaForce,
      From everything I had read, the Ester oils are designed to work with the diamond like coating (DLC) on the cam followers to further reduce friction and to quiet down the valve train noise.
      However, it is CRAZY expensive!!
      I will continue to use a good synthetic oil and monitor the engine wear with a used oil analysis: ruclips.net/video/uvExyfxzsRo/видео.html
      So my opinion is if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, go ahead and use the ester oil. For me, my used oil analysis shows the engine doesn't have any issues and runs great, so I will stick with a name brand synthetic oil.

    Thanks for the video. I just bought 2013 m37 with 90,000km on it.
    I never drive over 150km/h, but i only occasionally accelerate using about 4k rpm. - i rarely take it to the maximum of its performance. Now, to achieve some immediate response to the engine, i am about to switch lighter oil, such as 0w20 viscosity. What do you think? I would like to have your idea. Thanks.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  3 года назад

      I don't think using 0W20 is a good idea, since the engine was designed for 5W30. Plus I don't think you would feel any difference in performance with the 0W20.
      If you want more performance from your M37, I would do the typical intake and exhaust mods. More air flow - more power :)

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  6 лет назад

      Hey Giuseppe Marotta,
      I would follow the 8,000 KM oil change as specified in the owner's manual.
      My reasons are:
      (1) The factory knows the engine the best.
      (2) The factory may use a slightly different engine oil for a proper seating of the piston rings during the 8,000 KM break in.
      (3) You save a little money.
      I hope you enjoy you new car :)

    Hi sir, I have a question regarding engine oil viscosity for our engine, VQ35HR/VQ37HR. I drive my G harshly and use RPM over 7,000 ~ 8,000 usually.
    I worry about engine protection since I use high RPM a lot, so I've been using 5W-40 or 0W-40 engine oil for a few years.
    Will stock engine oil viscosity, 5W-30, not be able to protect the engine at high RPM compare to 5W-40 or 0W-40 engine oil?
    (I change engine oil every 5,000km/6 month which comes first).
    And please I really want to know which brand and product engine oil you use for now (or you've been using to your g37ss).
    Waiting for your advice sir.

      I use a name brand synthetic 5W30 (Castrol, Quaker State, etc) and once my engine oil temp is 60C/140F (about 20 minutes of driving) my engine sees 7,000+ RPM almost daily.
      The VQ engines are VERY strong and durable, just make sure to change your oil every 5000-7000 miles and it should last a very, very long time.
      At engine operating temperature, the difference in oil viscosity between 5W30 and 5W40 is not very much. See: www.widman.biz/English/Calculators/Graph.html
      With the 5W40 / 0W40 oil, the oil pressure will be slightly higher. I don't have any data on exactly how much, but it will be slightly higher.
      The oil pump creates the oil flow, and the restrictions inside the engine (bearings, oil passageways, etc) create the oil pressure. Oil pressure is the resistance to oil flow... If the oil pressure is a little higher, the oil flow is a little lower.
      What do you want? Oil flow or oil pressure?
      You can also do a used oil analysis to see what parts of your engine are wearing:
      K&N Filter Dirt Test: G37/370z - Motorvate's DIY Garage Ep. 16
      ruclips.net/video/uvExyfxzsRo/видео.html
      Sooooo, I don't think the difference in oil "thickness" between 5W40 and 5W30 has much benefit or drawback. BUT if you feel better with the 5W40, then that is what you should do.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 года назад

      Hey 100 Keys,
      Excellent observation!
      However, there is about 3/4 to 1 quart of oil that stays in the engine after while the oil is being drained. This is the oil that is inside the oil passage ways in the engine, crankshaft and camshaft.
      So if I add a little to that by the car not being 100% flat, I still have changed 80-90% of the oil... and the used oil analysis shows all is well with the engine wear.

      I think it is a good idea. I change my power steering fluid on all my cars every 2-3 years. It is very easy to do it yourself. Simply use a turkey baster or large syringe and remove as much of the old fluid. Then top it off with the correct fluid. (for the G37 Dexron VI ATF) Then do the same thing next week. This will change most of the fluid and should keep your power steering pump and rack happy for a long time.

With the cover on, the air passes through the front grill, rad and then exits under the car by the transmission. Does it make a difference? I really don't know. Hey Alex Cherkasov,
      Thanks for the comment and yes I care. :)
      I understand your thought process but I don't know if it makes any measurable difference in engine life.
      After draining all the oil for an oil change, there is still about a liter/quart of oil in the engine oil galleries, camshaft and crankshaft. This prevents a true "dry" start.
      In 35 years of changing my own oil, I have never filled the oil filter and have never had any engine failures or premature wear.
      However, if you can fill the oil filter, it won't hurt. :)

    • @CTX50
      @CTX50 5 лет назад

      As a long time mechanic let me say that pre-filling the oil filter is a waste of time. And on horizontally mounted filters will also make a huge mess

    • @videomaniac108
      @videomaniac108 4 года назад

      I don't know how long the time delay is on the VQ engine to build up full oil pressure, but on a Porsche that I had that had an oil pressure gauge the difference between putting a dry oil filter vs a pre-filled one was about 1 sec and about 5 or 6 sec. I also had an early 90s Ford Escort(1.9L engine) whose valve train would clatter noisily for about 5 or 6 seconds if a dry oil filter was installed. I don't know if the difference in oil pressure build-up times makes a significant difference in terms of engine longevity, but I prefer to err on the side of caution when doing any kind of maintenance. Also, on my Porsche I would disable the ignition when I did the first start after the oil change so that the engine would crank at lower revs while the oil pressure was building up. On my current car, a 2019 Nissan 370Z sport coupe 6MT, I use Nissan ester oil and change it every 3K miles, as that oil tends to shear down to a 20 weight oil after about 3K miles, from having read UOAs on the VQ37VHR engine. My car currently has about 17K miles, after having been carefully broken-in, and uses about 1 oz of oil per 1K miles.

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  4 года назад

      @@videomaniac108 Here is a little unknown tip for you 370z: If you have the clutch to the floor (if you have one) AND the accelerator pedal to the FLOOR when you push the "start button" the engine will crank over for 8 seconds and WILL NOT START. This is known as the "clear flood mode" AND you can use it to build oil pressure without starting the engine.
      This way you will have oil pressure BEFORE you start the engine, which is always nice :)

      3. Isn’t there too much steering wheel movement on rough road if your front tire is wider than the original 225 size such as 245/45/18 ?? (I’m using 225/45/18 for front and steering wheel still moves quiet roughly on uneven road..)
      4. Isn’t there any negative effect to our car’s suspension if you run square tire setup which is not from the factory setup? (Isn’t the car designed to run with 225/50/18 (front) and 245/45/18 (rear)?)
      5. Wouldn’t 245 45 18 square tire setup damage front steering rack and pinion?
      6. If you have different offset for front and rear rims, can you still do tire rotation with square setup safely?

      Starting this summer, I will be running 245-45-18 on 18x8" rims.
      That won't damage anything and will allow me to rotate for even wear as the offset is the same on a square setup.

      2. What’s the reason you are running square setup instead of factory staggered setup?

      It is the Infiniti OEM "Front Chin Spoiler". It is one of the reasons I purchased the car, I like how it looks. :)

    3:50 where do you get a new gasket for the drain plug

    • @MotorvateDIY
      @MotorvateDIY  3 года назад

      Local auto parts store or dealer.
      However, I have never replaced them on any of my cars and have never had a leak.

      Yes... the warmer the oil, the thinner it is and the more you get out of the engine. Go for a 10-15 drive to get it up to temperature.
      Good luck!

    The splash guard took maybe 70% of the time for doing this lmao I with there was a cut out just for the oil pan and filter lol other than that this is a super easy job and I'll probably never pay to get my oil changed ever again

      No harm in doing that. For me, I can't see the 3-4 oz of oil in added to the filter making any difference on start up. Keep in mind, the bearings still have a thin layer of oil before the oil pressure builds.
