  • @KaiserAfini
    @KaiserAfini 4 года назад +231

    "This hero has a thousand faces" That is a direct reference to the Hero's journey and how these games follow it.
    "In the game the fool is beaten again and again" That would be the player, who represents the Fool card. In other words, beginnings, innocence (doesn't know the game world, divine guidance (by the game's design) and not always wary of the dangers he is taking the character towards.
    That is a pretty cool meta commentary. It shows how the Hero's Journey doesn't need to be explicit (like it was in Horizon:Zero Dawn) and about the unusual nature of players allows them to have unusual roles in these crafted worlds.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  4 года назад +27

      Absolutely! Thank you for the comment. 'The hero has a thousand faces' also refers to Joseph Campbell's book, 'The Hero with 1,000 Faces' which is a commentary and comparitive theology/mythology across various cultures. Granted he defined the Heroes Journey so it's all interrelated. I plan to incorporate Tarot philosophy into my future essays on this channel but didn't think to assign Key 0 to this one. Thanks for the insight!
      Question, because of how the Cube of Space is structured, which character in these stories represent Key 9: The Hermit and which represent the yapping dog in Key 0: The Fool? In AW I'd say Thomas Zane is the Hermit and Barry Wheeler is the dog, barking at him to keep him grounded and avoid stepping off the cliff.

    • @KaiserAfini
      @KaiserAfini 4 года назад +12

      @@GamingUniversityUoG I haven't played Alan Wake yet, so I am not sure. But in control I think Polaris is the dog, keeping Jessie from falling to the Hiss.
      However, I believe that game is more about the Jungian psyche. The Astral is the Inner World, the Oldest House is the barrier between it and the Outer World (hence if anything inside the bureau adheres to an archetype, the "ideas" can anchor themselves into this world using them). The Board is the Superego, the Hiss is the Shadow, the Director is the Ego and Polaris is like a Daimon. The other dimensions and their overlaps are like sympathetic/emotional links.
      I think Darling is the hermit, isolated, possesing vast knowledge of the secrets of the world, yet very prone to being charmed by the moon (hence his lunacy at the end of the game).
      Regarding symbology, I would like to recommend a tabletop game called Mage The Awakening 2ed. The setting has magic as the Truth outside Plato's Cave, with mages being those that escaped for the briefest moment and learned how to draw on those symbols to warp reality. It uses a mix of Theory of Forms and Archetypes to create an absolutely fascinating world. Each mage Path is an archetype (shaman, enchanter, necromancer, thaumaturge or warlock) and have tarot correspondences.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  4 года назад +8

      Actually now that I think about It I have a different character for the Hermit in Alan Wake. If you play it you can find it easily with the symbols alone.
      One translation for a Djinn is the 'Genius of the House'. The Genius/Genie/Djinn referring to the higher self and the House being the container in which we reside. Hence we 'House' the genie in the bottle. Not sure if it's related or not thematically, just interesting. But yes it feels like the Oldest House is an unfiltered threshold of Jungian reality. They drop his name like candy in the story so it's obvious where their influences were.
      The Board is interesting from the inverted tetrahedron symbolism. The tip being the receiver from cosmic energies from below and translating the info to the top face of the pyramid representing the manifest world. Aka the board translating unconscious energies & Jungian forms and attaching them to the one bound to the OoP.
      Its fascinating how much Jung and Campbell are in Remedy stories. In This House of Dreams and Quantum Break they mention Campbell's Monomyth by name.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  4 года назад +11

      Horizon: Zero Dawn stuck to the standard heroes journey closer than Control did. At least in narrative presentation.
      The Call to Action & Supernatural Aid is the Focus and desire to learn the nature of Aloy's parentage.
      The mentor is Rost. After being putting Aloy on the Journey, Rost is killed. This is similar to Gandalf being removed from Frodo's story, Obi-Wan killed before Luke, and Dumbledore killed before Harry.
      In Control there is no direct Mentor. While Dr. Darling and Ahti can arguably fill the role, their guidance was always tangential.

    In case anyone's wondering about the word 'narri' in the refrain, with its very prominently rolled R's, it means 'fool'/'jester'.
    In my experience, word pronunciation in older Finnish pop songs tended to be more exaggerated, more theatrical, because many early Finnish singers/film stars had their background in theater, where it's really important to enunciate your words clearly for the audience. I think Martti Suosalo was trying to imitate this earlier singing style with his performance, which was a nice attention to detail. And sure enough, the song sounds like something you could have heard in the early to mid 1900s.

    You know, I only now realised that Sankarin Tango and Take Control actually spoil the game before you finish it. Both of them are before the hedron defense segment, and yet they still foreshadow the Jesse's hiss takover and escape from it's control. It is late, but still a spoiler.

      Poet & The Muse, Balance Slays the Demon, and Children of the Elder God do similar things as well. Control just makes it easier because we can play it back in the collectibles menu where in the others you couldn't without the OST.
      They do a bit but also the lead to a bigger mystery. Sankarin Tango is about the Remedyverse at large, Ahti's mindset and Take Control i question why the Anderson Brother's were writing a song about Ordinary and Jesse.

    • @QuestionDeca
      @QuestionDeca 4 года назад +6

      @@GamingUniversityUoG Well, it's because, in universe... it's all occurring In Universe. Alan Wake lore shows that the water from Cauldron Lake, when used in their Moonshine, provides fairly accurate visions of events, past, present but distant, or even future. The Andersons are theorized to be "Friends" with Ahti (As all three may be 'avatars' or representatives of gods), hence him having a tape of "Take Control".
      In Control, if you look, it's revealed that EVERYTHING Alan Wake but American Nightmare are confirmed as to occuring in the same Universe as Control (till Alan was no longer In said universe, though he does still touch it and affect it).
      Thus, by a lore stand point, it makes sense that the Andersons may of viewed the Original Ordinary AWE, the events in the Oldest House during Control (and in the Oldest House's Foundation), and a glimpse that something might be happening in Ordinary once again. (Dovetailing into the Foundation DLC and the future Alan Wake Experience {AWE} DLC)

    I really like how you wove together footage of the Remedy games and their protagonists. (And Ahti of course, gotta have Ahti in there.) I like how the music is acting like a connective glue, with its multi-layered references. There's obviously the bit about finding rest in death, before being brought back to continue. A clear reference to the players of the games, but potentially to Alan from Alan Wake, with death being the only escape Mr. Scratch intended to give him and Jesse Faden, with how she repeatedly died after being overtaken by the Hiss, in her mind. The mistaking an ocean for a lake is obviously calling back to the Thomas Zane quote from Alan Wake, regarding Cauldron Lake and the Dark Place located therein. The lyrics following all connect to Alan wandering in the depths of the Darkness and trying to escape back to the real world and his wife. However he was forced to wander into the night, into the dark place to keep it contained and away from her, bearing the burden of being its captor on his shoulders.
    The fact the burden is always there, likely references Alan's failed attempts to leave the Dark Place prior to AWE. But it can also reference the burden of the other protagonists. Jack Joyce in holding back and preventing the end of time. Jesse in finding/saving her brother and leading the Bureau. And even Max Payne with the burden of his family's death. Time shattering and the gunshot are clear references to events in Quantum Break, which you demonstrated in the visuals you chose.
    'He will never get a happy ending' seems most applicable to Alan Wake, Thomas Zane, Max Payne and arguably others, such as Trench or Paul Serene. Director Trench was never able to seek out a happy existence outside of the Bureau, due to the Board. And later the Hiss's corruption of his mind. Payne never finds happiness, even after killing the ones responsible for the death of his family. It doesn't really make his life any better. Both Thomas Zane and Alan Wake end up trapped in the Dark Place Threshold/Dimension.
    The next set of Lyrics speak of the heroes journey, referring to how it's seemingly hopeless. But they must press forward, alone into the night. Because the heroes are the only ones suited to bear the burden that would crush others. And it's always going to be there, they have to roll up their sleeves and simply go for it. Even if they're destined to get beaten down over and over, the hero is the one that can carry the burden and get back onto their feet, until they succeed.
    Just my best summary of the songs lyrics.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  4 года назад +12

      The brilliance of this tune is that there are two layers to the lyrics and presentation. Yes it can apply to a video gaming experience and has allusions to all the Remedy heroes.
      But it applies to the Hero archetype in general. In every age a hero must rise to beat back the wave of chaos. Even if they are successful, chaos can never be defeated for long so in a certain sense they are beaten. Each new face is a new hero who rises in a new age. One Archetype wears these faces throughout the eons.

    Etsii tietä valoon, luokse armaan, ainiaan
    Yksin sankar' yöhön syvemmälle matkaa pois
    Se taakka hänen harteillaan kuin lupaus aina ois

    Vaan hetki kuoloss' lepoo suodaan, jo takas kutsutaan
    Aika särkyy, ikuisuuteen laukaus kajahtaa
    Ei onnellista loppua hän kohtaa milloinkaan
    Niin monta kertaa kerrottu tää tarina jo on
    Sankarilla tuhat kasvoo, polku lohduton

In both games the unaware hero falls into a rabbit hole of hyper reality, fight for what they believe it's the good even if it comes to the contrary of the global opinion ( unconscious) and in the end they break free of the even the hyper reality's rules and put the higher powers into question.

      2 ) there is an extradimentional entity that hides at the deepest end of the global unconscious ( in persona you kinda can go into psychological terms like it's a place in a way) humming to people to deny their free will for an easier life and where it goes the space is getting corrupted.

    Englis lyrics: Heros Tango
    "I once mistook the ocean for a lake," a poem did he recite
    Mystery, in its depths, where he spent his life
    Underneath, gloomy ocean wast, in its shadow he wanders
    Searching for his way to light, to be with his beloved, forever
    Alone, away, the hero travels deeper into the night
    That burden on his shoulders, as if it was always promised
    In this game that fool is beaten, to the ground all the time
    Only in his death, he finds a moment of rest, before he is called back
    Time shatters into eternity, shot thunders
    Never will he meet a happy ending, ever
    So many times before has this story being told
    The hero with a thousand faces, a path without solace
    Alone, away, the hero travels deeper into the night
    That burden on his shoulders, as if it was always promised
    In this game that fool is beaten, to the ground all the time
    Only in his death, he finds a moment of rest, before he is called back

      I do always enjoy seeing how others translate it though. I remember the time I transliterated Ovid's Metamorphosis from Latin and got more out of it than the official published version. With different perspectives we can get more out of the same material.

    0:22 - According to the translated lyrics posted by Remedy in the description, it's "mistook an ocean for a lake"! - ruclips.net/video/VsszQXdoGpE/видео.html

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 года назад +1

      I noticed the discrepancy after I posted this up unfortunately. This is based on a fan translation I want to say maybe a year before the official translation from Remedy released it. Hindsight and all that.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG "mistook an ocean for a lake" also fits better regarding the narrative you presented in one of your videos, where Cauldron lake connects to a larger ocean of darkness or something like that! (Sorry if I mixed it up too much)

    Where is the Calliope line from? I love it and I want to look to the source.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  4 года назад +1

      Umm... might have to wait a bit lol. So Calliope is a fictional character I made for the channel and ended up using in a novel I'm working on. The surname 'Odigos' means Guide and Calliope is the Greek Muse of epic Poetry. So I use her as a Poet who is the Guide of Epic Literature such as these Remedy Stories.
      All my other quotes are from real sources but anything I attribute to Calliope is me talking. Sorry for the let down!

      @@GamingUniversityUoG No worries, that is really cool. It resonated with a lot of themes I write about. I just finished Control last night and fell in love with, well, everything about it. Cheers and Subscribed.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG I'm a writer and (Tabletop) game designer, a lot of themes I do deal with being aware of Archetypes and bringing the Epic in to normal lives. So Remedy has been hitting it out of the ballpark for me since the beginning.

      The first one is Alan Wake, who makes an appearance in Control. If find the panopticon cell with the typewritten page you'll get that scene with him. He also is the focus of the Bright Falls AWE.
