In the dimly lit studio, the air hummed with anticipation as Alan Wake stood backstage, the echo of electric guitars tuning in the background. He could feel the energy vibrating through the air, a tangible force that seemed to echo the pulse of his own heart. The stage lights flickered as the announcer's voice echoed through the cavernous space. "Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Tonight, in this very studio, we have the legendary Old Gods of Asgard, joined by the brilliant Alan Wake, ready to take you on a journey through the realms of rock and imagination!" As the crowd erupted in cheers, Alan took a deep breath, his mind already weaving the narrative that would unfold in the next few moments. The stage curtains lifted, revealing a surreal set that seemed to blend the ethereal with the familiar. The Old Gods of Asgard, adorned in majestic, weathered attire, stood like ancient titans, their instruments gleaming with an otherworldly glow.

I know next to nothing about Remedy or their games, but I understood Sam studied English filology at the university. Considering how humanists/language students career opportunities are often portrayed, I have wondered over the past week, how Sam sees his journey with Remedy. I'm sure he has gone through it many times in the interviews over the years, but the idea really fascinates me.
Sam lake the face of Max payne in Max payne 1 and 2... He made our childhood awesome... We will see the next game of Remedy in association of Rockstar to be the remake of Max payne...
What do you mean "pushed" to keep this in the game?! Who in the production there thought it was a bad idea? I mean, I'm happy his vote won and they did it, but what were the concerns?
Nah, the Dark Place is just an "empty" space. Waiting to be filled by the minds of whoever occupies it. It's just that right now the major occupants are Alan, The Dark Presence, and Mr. Door. And so this is the result. My theory is that it's only scary because Alan and the Dark Presence make it so. A different person/entity with different flaws and desires would make it a completely different place because the Dark Place brings out EVERY aspect of you and manifests it.
In a interview with Sam Lake on video game reviewer Skill Up's podcast Friends Per Second, Sam revealed that this was constantly at risk of being cut. He originally tried to get something like this in Control but wasn't able to get it done. The scope of this was tremendous and unseen in gaming production, Sam pushed back multiple times to keep it alive and I seriously can't believe how good it came out. This could've easily came off terribly but the team pushed so hard with passion and it comes out in the segment. Thank you Sam for not faltering in your creative endeavors, Thank you Remedy for constantly pushing the envelope, Thank you Poets of the Fall for constantly breaking boundaries and crafting amazing music.
No wonder - it's both most astonishing part of the game, so as it's the most hard to create part of the game: tons of testing, synchs, polishing just for one "scene". As Art - it's great, no questions, as money maker - very doubtfull.
I mean. Some form of this DID make it into Control with Dr. Darling's little Dynamite song. It wasn't a full sequence and clearly made on a budget. But I love how scenes like these ease the tension. With Dr. Darling, it is to motivate the player and Jesse to finish the game. As for Alan Wake 2... I have no clue. i haven't played it yet! I was scared I stumbled on a spoiler, but I am happy it is just a recap.
We recorded the first demos of Herald of Darkness in early 2020, and I worked for about a year very closely with Remedy when implementing the song in the game. It was a huge and meticulous project, and making all the different elements work together was a major challenge, but also super interesting. I'm glad it's now finished and out, and happy it has been received so well! 😊🤘
I see this as Door and The Gods' effort to put Alan back on track, after he snaps after so many years in The Dark Place, it tackles all his insecurities and remedies them. -The Clicker isn't a mysterious object of power, it's a gift from your mother -You've always been a writer, since the day you were born -You're not evil, you're a man with vices and it's a tragedy that you gave into them -You came to Bright Falls for her, and she came with you -When you were thrown into Departure, a world of monsters and nightmares, did you run? No. You fought to save your wife, Bright Falls and everybody there. You're the Torchbearer -You have to go deeper to surface, keep going even though it feels helpless -You're the Champion Of Light and The Herald Of Darkness. You can make this place yours
I love the fact that Alan seems to start realising at least some of this, given the thoughtful little smile when he sits down. Am I imagining it or is he at 8:56.5 finding himself to be closer to the Herald than he previously thought?
I personally believe Door is another representative of the Dark Place, similar to Scratch, and this performance is actually meant to mock and disillusion Wake.
I'd just to point out that everyone is talking about "Mama Gave me a Magic Clicker" as well as "Sam Lake in the game" plus everything but gotdamn who knew Alan could do a good jazz number
What makes it even crazier is that it's all lip synced, because Alan's body model and voice actor are two different people. They're REALLY good at that, in a good way.
The actor for Mr. Door does such a fantastic job. His enthusiasm and upbeat/goofy personality are so obviously fake but you can't help but feel charmed regardless.
It honestly feels like I'm back in Twin Peaks and watching one of the Black Lodge spirits try to act natural. ...And then the smile just gives off "How's Annie?!" vibes anyway.
He's been through variations of the talk show several times, and this time he's confident he can handle whatever they throw at him and take control of the situation. "No more surprises," he tells himself. Then they do this. That look on his face is his realization that he was kidding himself.
My favorite part of this video is 0:40 when Sam Lake starts dancing and rocking out in the total absence of any music playing. He's just so goddamn happy and excited to be working on Alan Wake 2.
The fact that Sam Lake - who wrote and directed the story and basically headed the whole project - is a character in the game and gets up there with the others doing a whole song and dance scene and just have a clear blast. It’s why I love Remedy as a whole, their games just have an element of fun to their creation that you can’t find anywhere else, you can tell everyone that worked on it had a great time doing so. There’s not enough stuff like this anymore
It legit gets even funnier when you realize his appearance is quite literally an inside joke for long time fans. Alex Casey is basically a alternate version of Max Payne. not only calling back to one of, if not their first game but also the fact the exact face he does for Casey is the max Payne face that Lake used for MP1.
I don't care for Alan Wake because it's not my kind of game but I loved Control and I hope there's a sequel to it with an equally random and ridiculous music video. Particularly with Sam Lake
He is so damn charismatic. I know Lance Redick was supposed to play this role if he was alive (also the trademarks shenanigans), even so, the new actor performed a great job
the tonal dissonance of this entire part of the game is honestly great, also I love Alan Wakes actor Ilkka Villi's ability to just genuinely look so fucking confused about what's going on most of the time.
I know the game did not sell well, but I would like to thank you, sincerely, for every one of us that did bought the game and played it, it was an incredible experience, and this chapter was one of the best.

The fact that this scene takes place in one of the best survival horror games I've played in years, is testament to how creative Sam Lake and the team at remedy is
I couldn't have said it any better. Survival Horror **N E V E R** gets the chance to be this weird and comfortable doing whatever it wants. I hope the industry takes a few lessons from this game because its absurdities know no bounds. @@niks660097the genre of game is survival horror. Limited resources (leading to avoidance of combat, like in an older RE title), safe rooms, squishy characters that can’t take too much damage, healing that is not instantaneous (common in the genre but not all of ‘em), infrequent checkpoints, limited inventory space (and a storage box) leading to a push & pull of deciding what to bring with you and what to leave behind… It’s actually closer to true survival horror than many recent entries, so I’m gonna have to disagree. It’d seem you are conflating the plot with the gameplay; Silent Hill is psychological in nature as well, yet still falls under the genre. Lots of them have that element in it, coincidentally. Or perhaps by design, as instilling tension in the gameplay echoes a psychological sort of story rather well! I hope I don’t come off as rude or “Acktshually”-like! I probably just wanted to gush about the game & actually take note of what survival horror mechanics it embodies. There’s a bit more than I’d realized at first, actually lol
Out of all the performers I feel like David Harewood is actually having the time of his life as Warlin Door. He is just grinning and jamming like nobody else.
Mr. Door is just having the time of his life. He is having an absolute blast. This segment wouldn't be half as good with some other actor / way of acting in it.
It is a huge shame we never got to see Lance Reddick as Mr Door. But David Harewood definitely channels Lance in his performance and absolutely nailed it.

I told her about this game Alan Wake 2 thats a psychological horror game and then showed her this video without elaborating any further.
I think the first Alan Wake would make a better TV show. I think the first Alan Wake was more of a horror game than this one. This one was more of a mind screw job than being dark. David Harewood played his role perfectly as Mr. Door. I don't think I'm even halfway through this game, and every time I finish for the night, the game somehow keeps getting better.
I don't know how anyone is beating this game in 15-20 hours. Granted, I'm playing on Hard difficulty (its actually extremely well balanced and rarely becomes anything other than challenging in the kind of way I find survival horror should be) but I'm 32 hours in with at least 5 chapters left to go and a bunch of side content to tackle still. Between all the richly written documents, letters, notes, etc as well as the amazing short films, radio shows, treasure hunts, brain bending codes to crack, and rich, rewarding exploration...It refuses to stop making me love it more and more. Rarely have I felt like a game so completely aligns with my tastes in this way. My few complaints are so inconsequential given what the game chooses to prioritize. The saddest thing is knowing there is an ending. I say all of this yet deep down I still haven't rewired my brain to exist in a world where Alan Wake 2 is real. I still cannot fathom it. It makes me so indescribably happy.

@@MikeG82 Not really. Sam said in an interview that he gives much freedom to the Poets because they can write good lyrics related to the story without his direct involvement. He's there ironing out the little details and part of the creative process for all songs of course. The only lyrics Sam has written completely himself are for the songs Ahti sings. Sankarin Tango in Control and Yötön yö in AW2.
Honestly, this was the most terrifying moment in the game for me. It was such an immediate turn in tone that it left me frozen in place for a good three minutes before I snapped back to reality. This game gave me a small existential crisis that is still haunting me. I love this fucking game!
What makes it funnier is that before this, Alan said, “Yeah, I think I’m starting to get control over this place and my situation a little.” and the Dark Place went, “Nope. Here’s a musical to show you I’m in charge. You aren’t in charge of shit.” 😂
@varunaX sam lake mentioned it on several podcasts where he was interviewed about the game, including the inspiration for the musical section. Friends Per Second podcast is where I've seen him say it.
We don't know what they're performing though, I don't think. I feel like it'll probably be Dark Ocean Summoning since this song is pretty long and requires more than just Poets to perform. Either way, I'm happy. I'm just watching the show for the Old Gods performance. 🤣
One of my favorite things about Control and Alan Wake 2 is how the protagonists will have legitimate reactions to the bizarre and sometimes cool stuff around them. Jesse saying “That was awesome” after The Maze, Alan’s little smile at the end of the song (and “It’s catchy, right?” in game)… makes our heroes more human in an increasingly otherworldly setting!
The problem is that while they have reaction to the quirky things, they have none for the horrific, Like Saga about the heartless corpse rising, killing and teleporting. Even worse for characters that aren't the protagonists, like the two cops when they arrive at the place, there is dead cops there that are at least their collegue, and all their reaction is ''yup, dead''
@@PirateKingBoros that's the point though, isn't it? alan wake writing himself deeper and deeper to find the exit "diving deep to the surface" means that the exit out of the dark place, the "lake", is unfortunately deeper down into the madness so the song is about getting to the exit regardless meaning WE MAKIN IT OUT OF THE DARK PLACE WITH THIS ONE 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
I heard that this was a production nightmare and that Sam Lake singlehandedly forced it in, and unfortunately for everyone involved, he was absolutely right to, this whole sequence is peak cinema
He didn't say it was a "production nightmare," just that when he pitched the idea of this sequence there was a lot of pushback from the team and Sam stuck to his guns and made sure it got in. The team just thought it was out of place at first, but Sam convinced them it was worth keeping.

I just came to realize this: This whole performance by Warlin Door is a way for Alan Wake to remember the events of the story after each loop is restarted and he forgets everything!
I was always wondering who did this musical for him in the Dark Place. Alan thought it was just the Dark Place messing with him, but yeah, Door kinda helping him remember would make sense. Though i am still not sure about Door's intentions in the long run.

One of the most ambitious games of its time to be honest. It pushed the envelope of what a single player linear narrative could be. Genuinely, this is a game that had faith in its players. I can imagine a thousand video game execs who would say "this is way too artsy and weird, no one is ever going to play this."

Old Gods of Asgard is a band in the Remedyverse (Control, Alan Wake), however the actual music is from a band called Poets of the Fall, with the members of the Old Gods band being actual members of Poets of the Fall. The fact that Remedy also uses songs from Poets of the Fall as themselves alongside them as Old Gods of Asgard is funny, with the first Alan Wake even having a character point out how similar Poets and Old Gods sound.

Dude, I've been along for the ride since then, and THIS was the last thing I expected in ANY game this year. I cannot stop listening to it and the TGA performance only served to cement Alan Wake 2's narrative of those that have played it. I am currently going back and playing the old content because good god what a game.
not only in the middle of the game, but so seemingly that the song does not in any moment repeat, it literally waits for you to continue to the next section uninterrupted, I couldn't believe it, the best experience I have ever had playing a game with a musical intermission!
Having almost zero context for this or the game, I can confidently say that I would buy *ANY* book of an author that came onto a show to do something like this.
It’s not a real show and it’s not a real author. It’s all the crazy fiction of the game played genially by great actors and mixed with amazing music from real artists.
What's so funny to think about... This could have SO EASILY been incredibly cringey. But it ended up being one of the most badass part of game. I was straight up in awe!
If they actually make a series/movie about Alan Wake I hope they keep Ilkka and Matt together as performance/voice, I forgot he's being voiced over because it was so flawless.
the dubbing is one of my favorite aspects of the alan wake series, it gives two amazing performers the chance to embody the same role, and it really adds onto the eerie and charming twin peaks/x files/lower budget public access pulp crime drama vibe the games have.

Some of mine take at least three - four rounds of editing before I really like them, and it's normal to not like your original manuscript when you first write it!

Considering how humanists/language students career opportunities are often portrayed, I have wondered over the past week, how Sam sees his journey with Remedy.

The dark place is a scary, dangerous place.
Also the dark place :
It may be dangerous, but it has so fuckin' good music
I think Mr. Door is playing a role by using the "talk show" and entertainment in order to help Alan to remain "sane" there somehow
The dark place is toying with Alan, which makes it more unsetling.
That's why it's dangerous, maybe not always scary but it's manipulative
Sam Lake living his best life.
I hope we all achieve that one day.

I love Skill Up, great reviewer
Thank god it wasn't cut! It was definitely the highlight of this game in my view!
-The Clicker isn't a mysterious object of power, it's a gift from your mother
-You've always been a writer, since the day you were born
-You're not evil, you're a man with vices and it's a tragedy that you gave into them
-You came to Bright Falls for her, and she came with you
-When you were thrown into Departure, a world of monsters and nightmares, did you run? No. You fought to save your wife, Bright Falls and everybody there. You're the Torchbearer
-You have to go deeper to surface, keep going even though it feels helpless
-You're the Champion Of Light and The Herald Of Darkness. You can make this place yours
Excellent analysis, thank you!
Beautifully said 👏🏽👏🏽
I love the fact that Alan seems to start realising at least some of this, given the thoughtful little smile when he sits down. Am I imagining it or is he at 8:56.5 finding himself to be closer to the Herald than he previously thought?
I love this breakdown! Some great insight into the meaning of the song and the character
I personally believe Door is another representative of the Dark Place, similar to Scratch, and this performance is actually meant to mock and disillusion Wake.

Sometimes whimsy and music can juxtapose really well with horror, enhancing both. (Like the Name Game scene in American Horror Story: Asylum.)

SAM LAKE YOU HACK!
@@vanillaicecream2385(Affectionate)
One of the best things about this song is that seeing Markus Captain Kaarlonen playing a new piece of music with his band. Legend.
They asked Sam "What's your job at Remedy?" and he said "Yes.".
Yes
Is Sam Lake another lake that is not a lake? Remedy is so meta.
I don't care for Alan Wake because it's not my kind of game but I loved Control and I hope there's a sequel to it with an equally random and ridiculous music video. Particularly with Sam Lake
Mr. Door's dancing and facial expressions are the best
He is playing a host of a Talkshow, of couse he's a showman.
Hell yeah!!
He has a face "i know what's going on and you dont" contrasting "where am i" of alan wake
he's doing so much acting with his eyebrows alone.
Ilkka looks like the good version of Aaron Rodgers, a hero, not a idiot
Takes hotter than a nuke (even for a packers fan)
I like to imagine that they never told him what scene he will be in and he is genuinely confused wtf is going on
Dissonance is the most jarring thing in all reality. Just ask Jesse Faden! I literally and honestly think of the Hiss as the Dissonance.
To be fair there’s a good chance he wasn’t acting there and Sam just didn’t tell him anything

Limited resources (leading to avoidance of combat, like in an older RE title), safe rooms, squishy characters that can’t take too much damage, healing that is not instantaneous (common in the genre but not all of ‘em), infrequent checkpoints, limited inventory space (and a storage box) leading to a push & pull of deciding what to bring with you and what to leave behind…
It’s actually closer to true survival horror than many recent entries, so I’m gonna have to disagree. It’d seem you are conflating the plot with the gameplay; Silent Hill is psychological in nature as well, yet still falls under the genre. Lots of them have that element in it, coincidentally. Or perhaps by design, as instilling tension in the gameplay echoes a psychological sort of story rather well!

We don't know what they're performing though, I don't think. I feel like it'll probably be Dark Ocean Summoning since this song is pretty long and requires more than just Poets to perform. Either way, I'm happy. I'm just watching the show for the Old Gods performance. 🤣
@@GradnLordTad I mean I'd be cool with that, it slams.
If Sam Lake and Ilkka Villi aren't on that stage I will scream and drown out the performance!!!
This song has become theme music for a particular phase of my life as I heard it during that time and it captured my heart.
Well it is their routine to see corpses@@maxentirunos

I heard that this was a production nightmare and that Sam Lake singlehandedly forced it in, and unfortunately for everyone involved, he was absolutely right to, this whole sequence is peak cinema
Where did you heard it from?
I’m so glad that they did it though, it was my favorite part of the game and it was so amazingly well done. The Summoning was also great
dark ocean summoning @@jonathanmurray5733
He didn't say it was a "production nightmare," just that when he pitched the idea of this sequence there was a lot of pushback from the team and Sam stuck to his guns and made sure it got in. The team just thought it was out of place at first, but Sam convinced them it was worth keeping.
God I love this kind of passion in media even if it turns out hated the fact the person really feels passionate about something they make sure it works and makes it in and it paid off here
According to the date of the game's release, I'm a year late.
But this music is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in a game. In fact, this music is one of the greatest things I've experienced in my entire life.
Nowhere NEAR enough love for the band, Poets of the Fall, here!! They've been going over 20 years, did the song Late Goodbye for Max Payne 2, War for Alan Wake 1, and are just INCREDIBLE here.
Marko Saaresto on vocals, Olli Tukiainen on guitar.
Phenomenal ❤
I saw them live last week and they're equally as perfect as on their albums. Marko's voice pushes forth so much emotion is ridiculous!
Take Control for Control too!
They are in the ending of the Futurmark demo 3dMark 2005 with the song "Lift" too...
Also Children of The Elder God, The Poet and the Muse, and Balance Slays the Demon for Alan Wake 1.
"Angel" is my favorite song of theirs.
You can tell Sam Lake is having a good time. Well, he wrote this for the game. I think Mr. Lake might be my new favorite game creator.

This song is just "Let's psychologically scar this guy" and then "Olli! Shred that thing!" and then Olli shreds that thing, break for a funky jazz number and more shredding. It's awesome.
The jazz section is my second favorite part bc it's so odd and random that I was like "alright, where you going with this?" Which leads to my favorite part, that epic ending. It's so damn good. I love the snazzy jazz. It's catchy. The whole thing is. Glad I'm not the only one who is like "yrs, jazz section in a rock song!"
This is one of my favourite comments under this video
it's also foreshadowing "show me the champion of light, i'll show you the herald of darkness"
Especially in the full version where the solo goes on for a full 3 minutes lol. Absolute beauty of a song. Plus the jazz section has another verse or two
The level of times this video is played in my household cannot be healthy.
Good to know I'm not alone with this 😂
Yup. My RUclips already plays this version, then live then no commentary mission walkthrough xD my GF wants to kill me after 40 minutes of it few times a day xD

This part in the game is very immersive.
I just came to realize this: This whole performance by Warlin Door is a way for Alan Wake to remember the events of the story after each loop is restarted and he forgets everything!
IT'S NOT A LOOP! IT'S A SPIRAL! (c)
Exactly! He writes in a musical about his story (or mr Door does this for him)…to remember his story!
❤❤❤❤
I was always wondering who did this musical for him in the Dark Place. Alan thought it was just the Dark Place messing with him, but yeah, Door kinda helping him remember would make sense. Though i am still not sure about Door's intentions in the long run.
@@Vadym.kovalevskyi because you already said it, i just want to say it here because i dont have anyone to talk to about this game. so here we go, that phrase makes sense, after the credit rolls a certain woman said that there is a way to escape from the dark place, alan thought it was a loop, but its actually a spiral, a spiral goes round and round but here is always an ending point, a spiral doesnt loop back on itself.
This is probably the most mindblowing, unexpected and perfectly awesome moment that I've ever experienced in a videogame. I was speechless during the whole segment. Everyone can tell how much fun and love every single one of you had making this happen. Thank you so much for this, I love you guys ❤

Kinda had its existence spoiled by penguinz0, but was still smiling the entire time at how cool it was. Penguinz0 said it went on “for a long time but didn’t outstay it’s welcome” but it honestly was very brief compared to the rest of the game
This man has not played a Remedy game.
I mean... it is awesome but at the end of the day it is just a song with video playing while you walk through some rooms
The shot of Alan Wake posing stoically with the pistol and flashlight as the lyrics say "a war needs it's warrior" is pretty bad ass.
One of the most ambitious games of its time to be honest. It pushed the envelope of what a single player linear narrative could be. Genuinely, this is a game that had faith in its players. I can imagine a thousand video game execs who would say "this is way too artsy and weird, no one is ever going to play this."
Who knew that a psychological horror game about a guy with a flashlight and magic clicker would have the best musical level of all time in it?

So a fictional band from a game has a real RUclips channel and is putting out its music on Spotify featuring Mr. Door and Alan Wake. God, this is a delicious level of meta.
