The degree of lyrical depth in this song is staggering. I just realized the word "fading" recurs in the song and has a double meaning: "fading" is always pronounced as "fadin'" / "Faden"
@@JAGNTAG The point was that since Marko's pronunciation of the word is the same in other songs, it doesn't necessarily conclude that there is any double meaning behind it.
@@meownamejeff Indeed, but given that this is a song about the game, that mentions many other things from the game, it is very likley that it *is* a reference to Faden. That's not a direct reference, but a subtle one. Just like in Balance Slays the Demon, "will I never scratch the depths of this domain", the word "scratch" isn't just a random word. Both POTF and Remedy are full of many subtle hints. And Marko's personal pronouciation isn't to be taken for science, since the guy can pronounce the same word in different ways depending on the song or the day.
Remedy always gave their protagonists meaningful names. Alan Wake == A.Wake, a man who has to get out of a dream. Max Payne, well, it's both about the maximum pain of his past and the one he delivers to his enemies.
never played the game, but starting at 1:52 the song really starts to speak to me. parts of it seem to be about an internal struggle with self-destructive behavior, a struggle to become someone who acts instead of someone who's acted on--to take control. and that's what a lot of therapy is about; getting people to take control and responsibility for their own behavior.
I was scared of missing something to unlock and did those damn office tasks way to long before or risked getting spoiled and just looked it up if I get something or of this is an endless chain
This song is such a great hint at how much actual control Jesse has of her actions. If you remember Alan Wake, the Old Gods of Asgard were influencing reality through their songs just like Alan was through his writing. I'm not sure if they are real or were created by Thomas Zane, just like Alan. This song not only contains information about Jesse's past, but also the future. The last verse literally says about her becoming one with Polaris, or Hedron, or whatever that life form is called in reality. So, when was this song written? Is it a new record that Alan directed them to write? Maybe, because he clearly has some control over what happens at FBC in the AWE dlc. Was it written before the events of Alan Wake? If so, how did the band know about future events? I'm guessing they hung out with Ahti, so did he tell them to write it? Maybe, because there is a message in Balance Slays the Demon that "it will happen again, in the town called Ordinary". Did Ahti direct that too? How much of Jesse's life was shaped by Zane, Wake, or OGOA? Point is, I'm so fucking hyped for Alan Wake 2. Sam Lake and Remedy just never disappoint.
Those are good questions! I actually wondered, given that this song by the Old Gods helped Jesse through the maze (just like "The Poet and The Muse" did help Alan Wake) could it be the reason why the FBC studied "My Dark Disquiet" (in the easter egg room), like they guessed the "real" Poets of the Fall ARE the Old Gods from another dimension ? And thus, they thought "My Dark Disquiet" could possibly be another OoP with hidden meaning ?
My wild guess is that everything we see in Alan Wake, Quantum Break and Control was orchestrated by Thomas Zane, in a desperate attempt to get his wife back, which instead caused the world to experience larger and larger deviations from what is physically possible. I wonder if Alan Wake 2 will confirm it...
@@FloydTheWolf Technically, maybe it's a stretch, but "My Dark Disquiet" kinda sounds like the story of control but from Dylan's perspective. I saw a theory float around that Jessie and Dylan were the same person, separated by whatever happened with the projector. So in that idea, Poets of the Fall writting the story from Dylan's perspective and Old Gods of Asgard writing the same story from Jessie's perspective, it's kind of an interesting parallel...
@@ashwilliams8783 No, it doesn't. It says Alan pushed the events of the dlc into happening, yes, but not the events of the rest of the game. The most it's hinted at Alan impacting the rest of the story is that he created the Hiss Incantation from a Dadaist poem.

I really love how the song has so much behind it in universe while also being slick as hell and making the surprise of the "maze" turning into a hectic series of battle arenas. Most of all I absolutely love the fact that the song is explicitly yelling at you to "take control" in the gameplay sense. It's letting you know in such a unique way that you're in the endgame and your loadout/build should've fully come online. It's showing you in the coolest way possible "This is the finale! You're the director! You have your full kit now! What're you waiting for? Unleash the beast!" And as soon as you do it feels like you've unlocked something that was right in front of you the whole time, but you were subconsciously blocking yourself off from which fits into the themes of the whole game itself it's uncanny.

So, who else thought (when playing or watching a playthrough) when they saw 'Ashtray Maze' that there was going to be a slow, puzzle filled, annoying maze segment ahead? A big block of filler stuffed in to pad the late game?
'Cause I did.
I have NEVER enjoyed being so completely goddamned wrong in a game in my life! Best part of the game. Best part of any game this year to be honest.
Aye-aye man,
I was expecting portal levels of tedium in solving the ashtray maze and then - BLAST !
Easily the best part. And aside from the crazy ass difficulty, I loved the game.
I was re-editing the gameplay in my mind by having Jesse practically dance when throwing pieces of the maze upon the Hiss corrupted.
Usually when I play a level, I take it slow, methodical and thorough. Here my push was hard, fast and unrelenting.
Same here, I was bracing tedious grinding and general annoyance but the moment this song kicked off, I was pumped.
Yep, I was fully expecting that too - I was expecting to basically be Lost Woods But Scary/Trippy. I very much shared Jesse's sentiment at the end.
i think the reason this song makes you feel invincible in the ashtray maze is because the hiss is a resonance based being and ahti said that they "have poor taste in music" so were using this song as a resonance against the hiss, weakening them and empowering us
Well, we can say that this song is an object of power
Odin and Tor Anderson >> Hedron
If the song/walkman is already an OoP allowing one to traverse the Ashtray maze, it stands to reason that the resonance of these sick guitar licks could also fight against all forms of evil.

I have this personal theory that awesome music actively makes people better at games. If the track hypes you up enough, you start getting filled with confidence, and muscle memory and reflexes you barely realize you have take over. This puts you in a state of awareness in which you can snap from move to move, target to target, action to reaction - all practically without conscious thought. This song absolutely qualifies as "hype enough"
@@RaisedtoSabbath This therory may hold credence. I was getting my ass thrashed by one of the 'Major Test of Strength' shrines in Breath of the Wild, but when I put on some more fitting boss music, I beat it in that next attempt without getting hit once.
There's definitely some correlation between hype music and good gameplay. People who suck at shooters can go ape in DOOM when the soundtrack picks up, and then go back to being mediocre when the music subsides.
@@atomicdreamz6035 We should have it tested, with both games and physical activities. And connect people up by electrodes and other things to measure brainwaves and muscle movement too at the same moment. Could be cool.
@@RaisedtoSabbath funny thing: That's absolutely true. Music is something that can absolutely help put you in this thing called a "Flow state" which is exactly what you described. Martial arts, chores, work, any situation where you "Turn off" and somehow perform the task is flow.

The degree of lyrical depth in this song is staggering. I just realized the word "fading" recurs in the song and has a double meaning: "fading" is always pronounced as "fadin'" / "Faden"
You are digging in too deep. That's how Marko pronounces the word. Give a listen to "The Sweet Escape".
Yosef Marko uses this type of double-meaning in his lyrics all the time though. In one of the Alan Wake games he even uses ‘Wake’ in a similar way.

Brought here by Remedy and Control. The Ashtray Maze alone just about makes the game worth full price. Badassery personified.
Awe expansion clearly says that all Control events are made up by alan wake to find a way out from the lake and dark
@@ashwilliams8783 No, it doesn't. It says Alan pushed the events of the dlc into happening, yes, but not the events of the rest of the game. The most it's hinted at Alan impacting the rest of the story is that he created the Hiss Incantation from a Dadaist poem.
"that was awesome" indeed my awesomeness reached the roof and beyond in this mission i love when games makes you a complete badass while playing .
Gods, the "in the oldest house and all these empty rooms" part owns my absolute soul. So evocative, so haunting, so melodic.
Word can't express how much I love this song. Worked so well in Control, of which I - and I assume lots others - first heard it. But as a track in itself, it's an absolute banger through and through, and I keep going back to it, long after I've put the game to rest.
i do not know why, but when finally I went through the maze and the song started to play..i got some tears while fighting the enemies, i was happy, or excited..all the emotions at once! I've love this kind of surprise in a game :-D
This is what rock/metal in minor key does to you. Plus fantastic game sequence. Epic.
Ahti's mixtape is fire!
Im listening this for almost year. And i am still amazed that EVERY single line refers to the game. Its hard to write song like that, but when accomplished it will remain for whole eternity as something remarkable. Imagine : every time someone plays game then you hear this song. And imagine years later - every time you listen to this song it reminds you the whole game :D
Going through the maze to this song made it feel like I was on god mode
Old God mode))
Yesssssss
@@andrepressed Your comment deserves more likes. Have another.
When it slows down and the guitar riffs while you're floating through twisting and expanding halls. Ethereal feel in the middle if an intense battle. This song is a true ballad, and they fit the aesthetic perfectly.
I'm a little ashamed to say that at the end of the Ashtray Maze, with this song in the background, my eyes were moist from excitement... What a catahrsis... What a game...
Nothing to be ashamed of, friend, that shit was awesome!
That. Was. AWEsome!
The guitar playing in this band is top notch. Well, the whole band is amazing live as well.
Anyone remember the reversed text in "Balance Slays The Demon"? "It will happen again, in another town, called Ordinary".
When I first heard them mention ordinary in game it was one of those 'of crap, how long has this been planned' moments.
@@thenewpeterv a long time. They mentioned AWE'S in Quantum Break as well
what reversed text and whats reversed ?
@@perahoky Balance Slays The Demon, near the end you hear reversed audio fairly clearly.
there is reversed text here

I thought I would never hear an Old Gods of Asgard song again. It's like the metal version of Poets of the Fall... AND I F*CKING LOVE IT ♥
Man, I really want Marko to do a full on death metal scream just once.
This is closer to old POTF than modern POTF. Except for a song here and there they lost me after the first 3 albums. Wish they hadn't abandoned rock, though style doesn't really matter if songcraft would be up to par..
It's kinda like Power Metal in lyrical and musical content. And I hella love it!!
@@crystallogic2543 I actually find that their songwriting has been really consistent throughout the years
@@the_Distortionist I'm with you on that. Their style has changed over time, but the lyrics and actual compositions themselves have always been good. Just depends on what type of music you like.
I so wish the Old Gods of Asgard was a real band, or that at least Poets of the Fall would make more songs like this. It's honestly their best work.
Old Gods of Asgard has 4 songs on Spotify. Unfortunately, the other songs are not this heavy but still well made.
@@MikkoRantalainen We'll probably get more songs too when Alan Wake 2 comes out in October.
@@MikkoRantalainenThere are 5 songs in game universe, so Spotify missing one, my music service has all 5 so does RUclips at least, Spotify needs to catch up then.
@@Wipeout186 There are 4: this, Children of the Elder God, The Poet and the Muse and Balance Slays The Demon. I know this because it's just been announced there's to be an OGOA album, which features 8 songs: the 4 already released, the 3 in Alan Wake II and an exclusive one for the album.
I wonder if the 5th you're talking about is War, which was featured in Alan Wake but is a Poets of the Fall song, not them as OGOA.
EDIT: The three mentioned above from Alan Wake II are Anger's Remorse, Herald of Darkness and Dark Ocean Summoning.
@@bobjenko maybe I will look at my playlist as my music app has Alan wake and control music and adding those I ended up with 5.
I'm just sad Alan wake 2 is unplayable as epic is not a good launcher due to being spyware.
Unbelievable! This is why I love POTF. Unpredictable yet so creative and unique!
AND still so distinctively *Poets of the Fall*!
Why don't developers do more of this? It's awesome I love how the music fits the game feelings perfectly.. Far as i can see here, i'm not the only one..
2:00 Lyrics 'Oh can't you see the light is fading? And in the night the demons rage and call your name.' and 'No deeper madness than your own making' are about Alan Wake, but no one seems to notice that.
This sequence alone in Control is the first time in years a game made me feel like a badass without the entire point of the game being to feel like one. I loved it.
Guys!! You are the best! This song - DAMN good. I love it metal vibes and this your unique sound and, obviously, Marko’s voice! We need more and we hope someday we can hear the Old Gods of Asgard song live!!
I didn’t even know marko had a metal voice it amazes me
Alan Wake 2 made me replay Control, and I fell in love with this song all over again.
How is Alan Wake 2? Played the first one but haven't tried 2nd.
DUDE THE MAZE SECTION WAS AMAZING!
So well done. A masterpiece of a game in my opinion. Easily one of the best games I've played ever and that's not a joke.
This song and placement in control is LITERALLY, the greatest feeling and game moment of all time.
I was so distracted in that maze, what with everything else going on in that mission, thinking 'I know that voice'. Pleasant surprise to see this band turn up where I didn't expect.
I was shocked, when the song started while playing Control, best gaming moment.
the Ashtray Maze easily in my top 5 video game levels of all time, honestly might take the number 1 slot thanks to this song playing during it
Just wanted to drop in and say that, whenever Remedy makes a sequel, I sincerely hope they call on you guys again for another amazing track like this. Aside from playing the game itself like 8 times (at least thrice just to play the Maze again), I've watched a dozen documentaries about the making of Control and I'm always blown away but how much effort you guys put into it along side the devs. So thank you for being you and doing this for us.
I kinda love how Alan isn't the only one whose art changes reality. There are several examples in Alan Wake, but it's so cool to see one here...
Супер! Побольше бы таких тяжёлых треков от POTF
