With a kid off to college in two years and a big dog who insists on traveling with the family about 90% of the time I won't be rushing to the local Genesis dealer to purchase a G80 or GV80. But one aspect of each does interest me. The standard 2.5L turbo engine is also found in the forthcoming Sonata N-Line, the KIA K5 GT, and (most importantly from my perspective) is optional in the 2021 KIA Sorento. I own a 2018 Sorento SUV with the 3.3L NA V6 and I was skeptical about durability when I heard that engine was being dropped in favor of the turbo four banger. But I was reassured to find the same engine in KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis products, all with the Korean brands' well known 10 year/100K powertrain warranties. Considering the improved fuel efficiency and equal or better performance, if the new engine is durable, it's a win/win. I'm not overly impressed by extended warranties. Like any insurance policy they're not offered if the insurer loses money by redeeming them. However, a long warranty does demonstrate an automaker's confidence in their product. And that often extends to dealers. My local KIA dealer, for example, doubles the 10 year/100K powertrain warranty to 20 yr/200K miles free of charge on vehicles they sell. As far as the G80 is concerned, members of the local country club driving E Class and 5 Series sedans may sneer but at least some folks who are well enough off to belong to the local CC got there by understanding the value of a dollar. When Genesis introduced the new G80 last year in Korea sales of competing Mercedes and BMW models dropped by more than a third. I think Genesis has a winner in both the G80 and the GV80.
Considering sticker and room for the pup, I'd suggest you look at the Hyundai Palisades with the 6 cylinder. Room for 20 pups and less money out of your pocket.
People really need to get past badges and what people think about them, I have a buddy who is a surgeon and real estate developer with over $50 million in commercial properties and he drives a Grand Cherokee Laredo. The weird thing about people that try to impress their friends, neighbors or colleagues with cars is that usually they make the same money you do anyway so it makes no sense. LOL
Depends in what field you are in. I'm in real estate and it is very competitive. Your image and appearance is key in making sales. Our top guys drives Bentley's, Aston's, S63's, etc. and some of our newer guys drives like a C class or a 3 series. Even if it's not intentional, people will most likely trust and buy from our top guys since the image that they project is ''success'' (and yes, they are very good at socializing and what they are doing).
@@fearfactz1 Actually I find in sales positions more expensive cars hurt you, people tend to not trust the guy driving the flashy expensive cars, tend to associate that with stealing their money or other untrustworthy activity. My neighbor for example is president of an investment bank and he drives a BMW 5 series and his wife an X5 and before he became president he always drove cheaper cars. I personally tend to avoid the expensive suit, expensive shoes, Rolex wearing types of salesmen, I have seen those types burn way too many people I know in my lifetime, they tend to have a lack of ethics and morals. Another friend and neighbor who also runs an investment bank did the whole red Ferrari convertible thing a few years ago and had it proudly outside his office and that didn't last long, it was gone shortly and the S-Class and Escalade came back. I find the overarching sentiment most people I know that see someone in sales driving something expensive is "so that's where my money is going" and "how much is he ripping me off to pay for that". LOL Of course this is a regional and cultural thing too.
I've been driving a 3.8 since 2009i still love it. Yeah I lust after the newer models but mine has been rock solid for over 250,000 miles. Remember to change fluids and don't fight over right a ways and you'll be fine.

This car looks great. If cars were popular these days, it would be a huge hit. Given the current market, it will still be a decent performer and will definitely grab market share. It's SUV cousin (the GV80) is going to sell like crazy. Genesis is getting ready to become what Lexus was back in the 1990's. The competition better watch out.
I just finished watching the Cadillac CT4 review before this one. What I noticed about the Genesis is where the trunk hinges go into the carpeted fabric the Genesis has a finish ring while the Cadillac just cut a hole in the carpet. This is the crazy stuff that make me nuts because I'm nuts.
If it looks Bentley-esque, it may be due to the fact that they hired the guy who designed the Conti GT and Bentayga. And they have Lotus helping on handling. And the former M head for dynamics. Altogether that’s a huge investment in talent. It reminds me of when Lexus came stalking Mercedes.
Great review. Interior design is very good, outside it looks elegant but that Superman grill is too much. But it's priced to sell. I bet it Will be a very good selling sedan
Hyundai need some massive credit for the latest genesis cars they've put out, I live in the UK and have an hyundai i40 estate and its an amazing car for the money and won me over from previously having a BMW, I cant see genesis coming over to the UK but if this is how they moving forward as a company then bravo!.
Genesis isn't an anonymous brand anymore. It's the new Lexus when Lexus was at its peak. It IS a premium brand & the only thing Genesis has to tackle now is having a premium & upscale standalone dealership network. They need the GV80, G80, & G70 to sell well so they can develop standalone dealerships
Depreciation is a concern. I looked into leasing a Kia K900 but it didn’t lease well due to the residuals. Maybe as reputation and sales improve the depreciation will improve.
Beautiful car inside and out and it definitely stands out in a crowd, unfortunately too many people underestimate it and don't give it the respect it deserves simply because it's not a Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac or Audi and that's a shame because the G80 seems to be the better car.
Hi Tom, I see a lot of oohs and aahs but but very little from actual owners of the car. I have a new 2021 G80 Prestige which I acquired in late February as a birthday present for myself. Even though it is less expensive than and E Class Mercedes or a 5 series BMW comparably equipped it leases for numbers that are as high as or higher than the aforementioned. This is my 3d G80. Actually, to be totally correct, my first was a 2015 Hyundai Genesis which was the prior name for the Genesis G80, but the same car. My 2d was a 2017 Ultimate with the 3.8 311 HP engine. Up till now the G80 has been a reasonable substitute for a Jaguar XJ at a lower price. I say up till now because my prior two G80s had a much better build quality than my new 2021 G80 prestige does. Unfortunately its interior beauty is only skin deep. It is cheaply made with recycled plastic parts that go snap, crackle and pop like a bowl of rice crispiest on steroids. The drivetrain is far inferior to the prior car and the car shakes and shudders like a tractor when the engine starts and shuts down. The car hit's the brakes on its own when uncalled for and the car gets unstable because of this braking action. It can be scary at times. I have a couple of female friends who won’t ride in the car after it did some wacky things at highway speeds which is a shame because it should be a babe magnet.
Tom, you'll get this comment. In Spokane WA, a metropolitan area with a population of 500,000+ people, there is NO Genesis dealer. Our one Hyundai dealer was told they couldn't sell Genesis unless they committed to spending a few million building a stand alone dealership/building. So now anyone in Eastern WA, Northern ID, or Western MO has to drive to frckin Seattle. Not that we don't like to visit, but that's a hellava trip to have the dealer change the oil....
I'm not sure the dealer was being straight with you (imagine that). Hyundai has allowed more and more of its dealers to handle Genesis after being kind of picky. Standalone showrooms should start appearing in the near future.
@@DrivenCarReviews Well, (3) salespeople all told me the same thing. Granted, none of them were manager level employees. But they still don't have them on the showroom floor almost a year later...
Tom I forgot to mention in my previous comment, you shoot your videos in a beautiful neighbourhood. I am assuming you live there as well. Thumbs up to you.
That grille can burn, but the rest of the design is great. Maybe I find the steering wheel kind of strange and droopy? Either way, Hyundai has done a pretty good job with their luxury expansion

You should start seeing standalone dealerships very soon. The number of Genesis dealers is small because Hyundai revised all the contracts last year to require those selling the brand to agree to build a separate Genesis facility.
Little brand recognition would be exactly what I'd be after, if I were interested in luxury cars. Only the unnecessarily flashy and large grille clashes with the otherwise understated look of the car. The lower price is just a bonus.

A lot of Hyundai and Kia products have the proximity key trunk opening feature so I'm very familiar with it. It works well unless you hang around the trunk often. And hey, I'm not responsible for ET's shortcomings...
Beautiful machine - big ‘ol kudos to HAG/Genesis for this one. Couple of thoughts: 1) major sticker shock for $3150 upcharge for AWD! 2) Another reverse tachometer?
Another awesome review Tom. Absolutely love the look of the G80!
Great review, thanks Tom!
LOL
Of course this is a regional and cultural thing too.
I do like the side repeater lamps...
I've been driving a 3.8 since 2009i still love it. Yeah I lust after the newer models but mine has been rock solid for over 250,000 miles. Remember to change fluids and don't fight over right a ways and you'll be fine.
This car is beautiful !!
I agree wholeheartedly about buying the car you love and want
I went in for a corolla hybrid but went in for the Camry se hybrid! Just had more goodies and more luxury! And I looooove my car and not everyone likes the styling 🤷🏻♂️
I'll take this one over the e class that don't even offer real leather..
I’d have e class pre facelift version
I have real leather on my E Class, it was an option..
@@2Greenlid a options for real leather on a car that starts at over 50k? Ya no
I always trust your “takes” on every car you present.
No need to be modest. You are the best car reviewer. Period!
Love the twins inserts, even if one of them wears an old leather jacket (no offense 🙈). Great review, as always! You modestly DO a good job 👏
I know this is a car review but your neighborhood has some beautiful houses
If it looks Bentley-esque, it may be due to the fact that they hired the guy who designed the Conti GT and Bentayga. And they have Lotus helping on handling. And the former M head for dynamics. Altogether that’s a huge investment in talent. It reminds me of when Lexus came stalking Mercedes.
Lovely vehicle. Although its a lot more car than I’d ever need, I would buy one.
Great review. Interior design is very good, outside it looks elegant but that Superman grill is too much. But it's priced to sell. I bet it Will be a very good selling sedan
Totally agree
Hyundai need some massive credit for the latest genesis cars they've put out, I live in the UK and have an hyundai i40 estate and its an amazing car for the money and won me over from previously having a BMW, I cant see genesis coming over to the UK but if this is how they moving forward as a company then bravo!.
Great review as always, Tom! Ta, m8.
Great Review Tom. You reviews pack lots of great info, driving shots, and funny stuff. Keep them coming
Genesis just looks classy. The timeless classic look is what they are going for.
Maybe among "car people" but not a single person in my neighborhood knew what it was. Pretty much the same in the wild.
@@DrivenCarReviews Wow thanks for the reply lol
All engines and trims offer a choice of AWD or RWD. Why can't BMW and Mercedes do that anymore?
I would argue that this does in fact have a showy badge...there is always an above level luxurious vibe when a product uses a wing logo.
It did not even occur to me that Tom only had a rushed and shortened review opportunity with the G80. Great video review as always.
Tom I forgot to mention in my previous comment, you shoot your videos in a beautiful neighbourhood. I am assuming you live there as well. Thumbs up to you.
I do not. But i visit often.
That grille can burn, but the rest of the design is great. Maybe I find the steering wheel kind of strange and droopy? Either way, Hyundai has done a pretty good job with their luxury expansion
The Genesis G90 is more popular than the German luxury brands (BMW , BENZ , AUDI) in Korea. Korean politicians and businessmen use it a lot. In Korea, rich people and business leaders who have a lot of money sometimes ride the Genesis G90 for business purposes. In Korea, there is a culture of respect when riding a domestic car. Just like the President of the United States uses Cadillac.
Fun to see how you pieced the clips together, by the clock on the central display. :)
What's missing is the big brand logo. If people can overlook that, the G80 is truly marvellous. In fact it is marvellous irrespective of brand logo. And Hyundai is a very reliable brand.
Edit: I hope they launch the G80, Telluride and Stinger GT in India. 🤞🏻
Why do you say that? You make it sound as if there is still Hyundai badges on it.
@@ch6inre6ction11 I just mentioned the parent company mate. Genesis is an unfamiliar name especially for everyday people who aren't much into cars. Knowing that Hyundai has something to do with the product is reassuring atleast in my eyes.
@@Ex-mn2oq I don't think most of the General public knows Hyundai is the parent company because most still don't know what Genesis is. But from the first tests it's clear the General public knows this is a sophisticated luxury vehicle
@@ch6inre6ction11 guess you missed the part where Tom mentioned that you can buy this car in a Hyundai showroom as there are no dedicated Genesis showrooms. Ofcourse they'll know what Hyundai has to do with this. Anyways, a Carwow video mentioned recently how Honda, Toyota and Hyundai are the most durable and reliable brands. The Japanese and the South-Koreans take pride in their build quality.
@@Ex-mn2oq And I bet you never knew that you don't even need to step foot in any dealership to purchase a Genesis...the sales people come to your home and they also can deliver your vehicle in a Genesis specific trailer. Go look it up.
hate the front end would rather have a '67 Pontiac Grand Prix REAL chrome plated steel bumpers, big beautiful design...
Shout out to Genesis for doing their own thing when it comes to their flavor of luxury.
You have no idea how cathartic it is to hear someone say the CT5 is in this class. I hate hearing people, either, never mention Cadillac at all, or mention them but say the CT6 is in the Mid-size category. Thank you so much. I subscribed just for that.
CT5 is one of those really good sedans people don't test drive. Their loss.
Wow I like that rim and interior!
You should start seeing standalone dealerships very soon. The number of Genesis dealers is small because Hyundai revised all the contracts last year to require those selling the brand to agree to build a separate Genesis facility.
Gorgeous car! Every angle is show stopper...Those wheels look incredible too!
Lol no
Little brand recognition would be exactly what I'd be after, if I were interested in luxury cars. Only the unnecessarily flashy and large grille clashes with the otherwise understated look of the car.
The lower price is just a bonus.
I thought the fun fact was going to be that the original Genesis came with an iPad for an owner's manual.
It was the Hyundai Equus that offered the iPad owner’s manual, not the Hyundai Genesis.
@@regalgs51 Oh, good catch. Wait, this is the internet... am I allowed to admit I made a mistake? 😳
@@regalgs51 It was the first generation Genesis G90, aka the second generation Equus (the original Hyundai Equus had even less Hyundai badging than the Genesis sedan which had less than the coupe), that had the iPad manual...
Tom you're so articulate and your productions (esp. your still shots) are so so good it makes me embarrassed to watch that quirks and features guy. He does the best he can I suppose.
Doug DeMuro?
This will likely succeed against other rival sedans...but will lose out to it's sibling SUV.
Man I can’t stop loving this car it’s soo 😍
Evil Twin has no Driver's Licence? Come on, Tom...
You did an excellent job on this review when you consider that you only had 24 hours to test the G80!
Very nice features in the back. Love the idea of putting the Universal Serial Bus socket so close from its user! Other car makers should copy that!
However, I am not sure about how practical it is (or not!) to open the trunk this way... Probably would have to be tested for a little while. And in REAL conditions.
In your red light comment, maybe you could have mentioned the extra greens to put on the table to jump from 4 to 6 cylinders, what do you think?
We love your reviews. And your honesty towards your faithful followers, Tom!
Keep up the good work, despite these quite troubled times!
A lot of Hyundai and Kia products have the proximity key trunk opening feature so I'm very familiar with it. It works well unless you hang around the trunk often. And hey, I'm not responsible for ET's shortcomings...
@@DrivenCarReviews After the year 2020 we've just lived, Tom... don't hold your breath! ;-)
Beautiful machine - big ‘ol kudos to HAG/Genesis for this one. Couple of thoughts: 1) major sticker shock for $3150 upcharge for AWD! 2) Another reverse tachometer? Ugh. 3) Have unfortunately heard a few firsthand stories about less-than-stellar Hyundai dealer experiences, so fingers crossed they’ve polished up the customer service side of things. That aside, fly high and fly far, Genesis!
They need to keep the price stable for the 2.5 with prestige package at asking price of $58K for 2022.
I like this car, but I love these wheels.
I love this blue 😍🔥🤩🙌🏽!!
that car back out function is only available for 3T engine upgrade package not 2T base package.
Concierge service with first 5 years of maintenance covered...with 10year drive train warranty...can't go wrong with that!
Although the Hyundai Santa Fe was more than adequate, this is the car I wished I had when I drove from Oklahoma to Eastern Tennessee back in August.
Our 2029 Santa Fe Limited 2.0T is as enjoyable to drive ( almost...) as our G80.
Tom, you're starting to show up in my recommended again!
That sounds like a good thing... for me. So is this just random? I'm just appearing in your "recommended for you" feed? YT is hard to figure out. It keeps moving the goalposts.
Way better review than Doug deMuro. Thanks Tom
We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
Screw the car...I just like listening to Tom.
There is a stand alone Genesis dealer in Edmonton. I'm sure it's not the only one.
I'm not a Genesis (core) customer, but I'm excited for the brand. Next car after my WRX, if they are still around, will be looking at a G70 6m. Hopefully they (Genesis) still keep the same thoughts on driving in the near future.
It looks great, inside and out.
After 2020 IDGAF what anyone thinks anymore which means I can finally buy a Hyundai product and feel no badge shame.
I currently run a S90 for a Livery sedan (limo) in the Boston area. How do you think this compares to that or say a continental (which I know is dead) for back seat comfort. Price is a factor as I keep my cars 3-4 years and put tons of miles on them
The back seat room is very good. I'm 5'10" and with the driver seat in my perfect position, the back seat had enough room for someone 6'3" It is huge. And the doors open wide. It would be worth your time to investigate. Maybe they might have a program for your profession?
@@GlobalTV123 I looked into it back when the Equus came out... They kind of had a limo fleet option, but it really didn't carry anything like what Lincoln offered. Ford sets the standard for fleet. Chrysler surpassed it on paper, but not after sale. GM is more for large fleets only. Volvo did match Lincoln, and I do love the car... But I always need to be on the lookout. Everyone complains about the death of the town car... But seriously, that was a decade ago now. I'm also waiting to see the MPG numbers on the Suburban diesel... But I'm not holding out hop on that one
G90 used to be Equis is the stretch limo version look for a bargain used before this refresh it would provide a very good backseat customer experience
@@4wazza the problem there is price. It's too close to the S-class and 7 series. Id be able to charge more with the know brand at those rates. I need to keep the spend in the $50k range
Oh my God this car is magnificent
I miss the Tau 5.0 V8 from the Genesis sedan🥺
Price? HP and torque for the 3.5? Did I miss that?
I believe the 3.5 V6 has 375 Horsepower.
Good review!
What neighborhood, were you guys filming in? It’s looks very nice and clean!
In the Bellevue area. Near Seattle.
Sadly they don’t have the naturally aspirated V8 engines any more.
Yeah they lost my buisness for that, I've tried the 3.3t, it's not even close to the same level as the 5.0. it felt shakey and unrefined, like a car worth 30 k less
4 door sedan means evil twin is in the building! Lol 😆
Them wheels tho 👌🏾
Tom you seem like your from the Pacific Northwest or Canadian. Let me know if I'm right.
I wish they kept the 5.0 V8 as a sport model at least
The badge thing is no longer an issue at all. Genesis rises.... Jaguar falls. Jaguar has taken a mighty large prestige fall and has a quality perception problem. Kudos to Hyundai / KIA for a relentless pursuit to improve. 2022 GV80 for me.
You do a great job. Down to earth not BD. Keep it coming. Cheers.
Yeah finally someone sees that they raised it almost 6k for 2021 MY from 2020 G80 base price.
Very nice wheels! I hate that automakers mostly have shiny aluminum spokes...
I have never understood the buying something to impress someone else psyche? I believe that would constitute one version, of a fool. I like this car. I would like, not need more power though. Overall, a nicely styled vehicle. Well done Hyundai.
Car reviews as vivid and uplifting as a rainbow 👍
An FX behind the scene EvilTwin video maybe? Best Car Reviews channel on RUclips.
Great looking car, I hope they sale tons of them.
Great review
"cost more?" ... The only thing that likely to kill Genesis could be price. I checked MB E-Class, BMW 5, Audi A6, Volvo S90, this G80 cost about the same if not more to the Germans, and definitely more expensive than Volvo, which is a larger car. "no go" for me without a deep discount.
Looks great.
Terrific interior. Love the leather color.
