Interesting mix of unconventional/uncommon design elements. They even managed to make those wheels not look like the cheapest discounter stuff but fit the overall image. Great in white, but also looks good in other colors as long as it is not silver/gray. 3:55 You are dropping some monstrous eastereggs there. 😄 I am not versed in car manufacturer agenda... Did they maybe build this Sport as an experimental step, not expecting it to be well-rounded, but serving as an exploration of how they can face the competition?
As always, long term Hyundai Kia issues keep me at bay, but seems like the lighting was off either by design or by accident. Couldn’t really see any interior detail. Kinda dark. Good reporting and info
Music at the beginning is so on point! Very appropriate for a silent Hwarang (Korean Ninja) who's definitely focused on dethroning its Japanese competitors. There's nothing that the Japanese currently have that can rival this.
I agree with you that the Sport pkg should be skipped and you should just order the regular G80 **except** Hyundai decided that if you want a V6 the only way to get it is to get the Sport pkg, all wheel drive and all wheel steering. Adds $5k of bloat to the sticker and really removes it from consideration.
Makes me think of the sonata n line. The built a hardcore cruiser car and tried to inject some sport into after the fact. Then they ultimately ran into a price ceiling. Because it seems like it needs some major changes under the skin to turn this into a sport model.
From a sports car perspective, Genesis needs to pull the trigger on a proper sports coupe for which it was designed to do. I heard some ramblings of a GT70. Will we ever see it?
I know they're working on something that'll be heavily inspired by the Essentia. I just don't know where it'll be positioned (70 or 80). There was a silhouetted reveal they did some time back where they showed multiple models with the DRL signatures, one of which was a G70 wagon. I know there's also a GV90 coming.
To be fair, fully loaded the G80 Sport is about $71k and the 5 Series equivalent $78k or so. Obviously depends on colors and option packages selected about those would be about apples to apples. I agree with the assessment that at this price point people can afford to extra to get more performance from the Germans.
I think Genesis is on the brink of elevating their name with the newest models. They're literally everywhere in Korea now, more so than the German brands, which are a well established status symbol.
Great video! Just passing by to say that i'm not a fan of that blur effect that can be seen in some of the interior shots of the car. Looks as if the lens was dirty or something. ♥
I love these cars the problem is the leases are atrocious. I tried to trade my Stinger GT and lease a G80 for literally two weeks. The lowest lease price I was quoted was almost what I can lease a 7 series for.
That’s because their residuals are shit. Leases pat for your lease term’s estimated depreciation of the car, so first 2-3 years. If the car depreciates a lot, the lease will be high. If it doesn’t, it will be lower.
Genesis needs a major overhaul in dealer experience. If you want to move forward as luxury auto maker, you can't mix Hyundai and Genesis dealerships into one.
Hi Guys, just curious if you've had a chance to profile the 2023 G80 3.5T AWD Sport Prestige as of yet? Were there any improvements on any of the issues you identified in the 2022?
It’s a shame dealers do so much bad for a brand. This one looks pretty awesome and the carbon bits on the interior makes it look way more sophisticated
Why worry about the dealer experience, if you really like the car? I have owned and maintained Genesis products (original Hyundai Genesis sedan 2015, 2018 G80 Unlimited currently G70Sport) . Besides being trouble free, the dealer experience and be avoided entirely if you choose. They will bring you a loaner, and drop off your car when finished. ALL maintenance except tires/brakes are included for 3 years and 36,000 miles (which can be matched to a lease term if you are concerned). PS Love these reviews!
Is your camera broken or this new bloom effect (like on 1:57) was added on post production? Haven't seen this effect in your other videos, which are usually sharp, crisp, vivid and colorful. If that's your new and improved artistic vision, hope you'll get more complaints - if it also annoys others - and revert back to your old way.
I pinned an explanation of this, but I switched to all new equipment and lens. The shots were all experimental, and got used in video. As I sort out what works and what doesnt there will be some of this in videos.
As usual, you guys have provided a great review with excellent insight. With this vehicle, I really wish Genesis maybe had a little more grass-roots track time development. These vehicles are no longer the pure value play that they were a few years ago. The vehicles are quite good, but in this segment the pricing is too close to the 540 or A6. I believe the vehicle is worth its pricing, just that 95% would pay a little extra for a 540 or A6. All good vehicles.
Don't buy new, the values drop like a rock. Slightly used, you'll save 10's of thousands. My 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0L Ultimate AWD was $50k CDN with 10,000kms on it... and more recently, I traded it in for a G90 5.0L Ultimate and that cost me $60k CDN with only 5000kms on it. The G90 retails in Canada for $90k, saved a good $30k on it.
I have driven many A6 and my 2020 AWD Stinger 3.3TT GT and my new Mazda CX-30 Premium Plus Turbo are both better then an A6--problem is with AWD the germans are in the 70k range plus--a basic A6 with a 4 cylinder is 65k new and my mazda beats it in every category including the interior.I had my stinger a year and a half--went to the track and had zero problems--I sold it simply because the price skyrocketed and I was able to pick up a mzda CX-30--BTW I actually went to look at a GV70 3.5 TT AWD and the Mazda was a demo trade in and after driving the Mazda--I bought it and pocketed almost 10k--and I own it.Hyundai genesis--KIA after 2018 have almost closed the gap on the germans and mazda definetly has--a fully loaded Q3 is 17k more--slower--1DB louder at cruise and the interior and stereo (of the CX-30)are rated with the Q3's top tech package. Also oil changes on my stinger were 70 dollars for synthetic--Audis are like close to 250 dollars and I am sure the bimmer is the same--not worth it.
The proper way to drive a BMW or M-B is to lease one, 3 years maximum. After that all the maintenance nightmares are inherited by the buyer who wants to try to impress others with his expensive car. Been there, done that; I'll stick with Japanese and Korean reliability and low cost of ownership.
Not really the target demographic for this car but I will say it's really cool seeing how upmarket previously "economy" brands are moving. Genesis looks like a great alternative to the more entry level American or German luxury offerings. Of course, there isn't really a lineage or brand mythos for the brand to fall back but, it's cool seeing these manufacturers rapidly evolve their offerings. The era of the end of combustion cars has been a lot more exciting than the boring stuff we got in the 2000s and 2010s due to the recession. Mazda for instance is a really standout brand with their more normal people oriented cars being so incredibly refined for their price points.
That's true...but Mark is a notorious Hyundai hater (think it has to do with a dealership experience he had). So hating on Hyundai / Kia / Genesis has been a common behavior..
Love the critical eye on cars like these. Sure they're great, but does it accomplish what it's being marketed as? Seems like this one does more right than wrong, but is a bit artificial in how it feels when pushed. For this much money, you'd think that would have been sorted.
The sad thing is there's no mid-size sedan that really likes being pushed anymore.. I think most buyers of new cars like these just want to feel nothing. Even the new 5 series I had as a loaner was very disappointing. Very capable but not playful or goading you on like my e60
I thought the first generation G70 was one of the best interiors in the entire class. They're taking that to a whole new level with these next generation G70 and G80, especially for what you get for the money.
Thanks for this review. Got a great deal on a 2024 Prestige loaded. Would not have considered it without this video. An amazing leap forward compared to our previous 2021 GLC43 AMG in terms of quality, technology implementation, and cohesiveness. And costing about 1/2 as much monthly.

The G80 is quieter than the ES by about 15 to 20%
@@savagegeese what are your thoughts on the packaging options? IMO it got worse with v6 AWD only and small stuff like you can't (and you couldn't before) get HUD on 2.5.
@@savagegeese Was this perceived or measured?
@@Fasty2107 I measure luxury cars. However going by db levels is not completely accurate because that only measures spl and not frequency. Which is where the g80 is next level.
I chose a 2016 CTS over a 2016 G80 a while back.... Big mistake that was. I really like this car
Nice review. Impressive car for the money. Curious choice of music for Exterior Impressions segment. If you composed that I'm impressed.
A car you wouldn't be embarrassed to use to take two friends out for a cod sandwich. Lighting in video captures the luxury aspirational feeling well.
I am not versed in car manufacturer agenda...
I've worked on some high mileage genesis vehicles and found them to be high quality products
I’ve had a couple of mechanics look at my Stinger, and everyone of them were impressed by the build of the car.
1:53 This is how I view my KIA K5 after the 10th beer. So much bloom effect that it is basically a G80.
Enjoy your reviews...keep up the great work!
Makes me think of the sonata n line. The built a hardcore cruiser car and tried to inject some sport into after the fact. Then they ultimately ran into a price ceiling. Because it seems like it needs some major changes under the skin to turn this into a sport model.
Always puts a smile on my face when I see a savagegeese video drop!
@@chiemekaa And also a rumored GV80 Coupe
Love timing these with my morning coffee.
To be fair, fully loaded the G80 Sport is about $71k and the 5 Series equivalent $78k or so. Obviously depends on colors and option packages selected about those would be about apples to apples. I agree with the assessment that at this price point people can afford to extra to get more performance from the Germans.
In Canada, a fully loaded g80 goes for 72k probably a bit more for the sport, while an equivalent e class or 5 series goes for 100k or more
Good point. The gap would be even wider if you went with the non-sport version. I'm guessing well over a $10k difference
so by "get the regular version" do you mean the 2.5 engine, fully loaded prestige?
I think Genesis is on the brink of elevating their name with the newest models. They're literally everywhere in Korea now, more so than the German brands, which are a well established status symbol.
Eh, local markets usually support local manufacturers. Come talking about it when Germany has more Genesis vehicles than the top 3!
Just replaced my 5.0 Tau with one of these 2023 and completely excited to receive it.
Great video! Just passing by to say that i'm not a fan of that blur effect that can be seen in some of the interior shots of the car. Looks as if the lens was dirty or something.
♥
4:01 finally an infotainment system with my needs front and center
I love these cars the problem is the leases are atrocious. I tried to trade my Stinger GT and lease a G80 for literally two weeks. The lowest lease price I was quoted was almost what I can lease a 7 series for.
That’s because their residuals are shit. Leases pat for your lease term’s estimated depreciation of the car, so first 2-3 years. If the car depreciates a lot, the lease will be high. If it doesn’t, it will be lower.
Great review. Nice intro music, too. My cobra was calmed by it.
I like all those added dirt pockets in the wheels, I really needed an excuse to spend more time in the driveway washing my car.
Nice to hear your thoughts on this car. Great video
They already revealed the next G80. Looks amazing.
Thx for another brilliant car review. You are the best in the biz
Genesis needs a major overhaul in dealer experience. If you want to move forward as luxury auto maker, you can't mix Hyundai and Genesis dealerships into one.
They are working on it... Expect new dealers pretty soon
Not sure if this is my eyes, but the focus seems to be off in some of the shots. Is that for creative effect?
I wonder if genesis would ever touch the sports car segment. I would love to see the Genesis attention to detail and value in the 2 door market.
No they gonna switch to electric before sports car segment
Hi Guys, just curious if you've had a chance to profile the 2023 G80 3.5T AWD Sport Prestige as of yet? Were there any improvements on any of the issues you identified in the 2022?
It’s a shame dealers do so much bad for a brand. This one looks pretty awesome and the carbon bits on the interior makes it look way more sophisticated
I am wondering whether they are real or imitation.
@@Dowlphin either way, look cool
Mark,
Is fecal incontinence in a car related to a leaky rear differential?
Nice, I hope the base model G80s and G70s turn out to be pretty reliable so I can grab one CPO some day
Keep in mind that the extended powertrain warranty get's cut to 5y/60k when the first owner sells the car.
@@rosgoncharuk2403 oh crap, I did not know that. The 10 year powertrain warranty was the biggest selling point
3:56 "fecal incontinence, bowel leakage"
my reaction when a new savagegeese video drops
The proper way to drive a BMW or M-B is to lease one, 3 years maximum. After that all the maintenance nightmares are inherited by the buyer who wants to try to impress others with his expensive car. Been there, done that; I'll stick with Japanese and Korean reliability and low cost of ownership.
Whats with the fecal incontinence at 4:02?
Its hard to buy this over a bmw unless they separate the dealerships
$7 / gallon for premium fuel here in Montreal... I'll be waiting for the BEV version.
Yea I’m thinking of switching to some for of Hybrid for my next car. Ontario is at $1.52 per litre for regular.
That’s what the globalist overlords want you to do.
@@austinfrazier7325 I'm currently spending $200/week on fuel. BEV is a no brainer, "bring on the globalist overlords" 😂
that infotainment screen is so tastefully done, very clean
In terms of fun, I thought the 2022 G70 Sport model was supposed to take care of that and the G80 was if you wanted more luxury and room.
That's true...but Mark is a notorious Hyundai hater (think it has to do with a dealership experience he had). So hating on Hyundai / Kia / Genesis has been a common behavior..
Love the use of focus in some of the interior shots! Kind of reminds me of a 1990s car commercial
Hyundai/Kia rushes their stuff to market and constantly changes stuff!
I prefer the shape/looks of my 2019 G80 Sport. Added a trunk lid spoiler & a rear window spoiler recently; love it.
As a previous owner of a C300 and current owner of '23 G80, I'm curious to learn what are some of quality differences you have experienced?
Those waffle-iron rims though.
Is the aluminum underbody better suited for those living in the salt belt? Or is the corrosion just as bad as rust (or even worse)?
Fecal incontinence. It happens to everyone. Hope you will feel better soon.
It's the details that count
Great review. Well balanced. I priced the car with sport AWD. Pushing $70K. Totally agree with you..for that much money, rather own a BMW or Audi.
Trust me when I tell you this car drive better than a regular 5 series he's comparing the sport trim package to the M class which is easily 15k more. The g70 is more of sport car
