SHOWDOWN 👊💥 (EP.1) 1 House 2 Styles | Tight Sketch vs Loose Sketch | WHICH WINS?!

  • I take a reference photo I found on Pinterest of a beautiful looking house and sketch it in 2 ways, one version which is super tight and neat illustrative style and the second loose and splashy sketchy style.
    👉 Which one do you prefer?! Let me know in the comments!
    1 = lefty tighty OR 2 = righty loosey (yep, I missed a trick there, should have had them the other way round)!

    Love the contrast... it’s a powerful teaching tool... honestly I like both for different reasons. I think I would employ precision drawing to record heritage or historical houses but for on location urban sketching, the loose form is definitely more manageable and also a great way to do a travel documentary... thank you for sharing!

    • @tarias_sketchy_adventures
      @tarias_sketchy_adventures  3 года назад +6

      That's such an insightful comment - you're right, a different technique depending on what you're sketching. Something historical where getting the details accurately would be more important vs capturing the energy while you're urban sketching - that's definitely cemented something in my brain by putting it in this way, thank you!!

    I love the loose sketch. They’re both great, but I think loose sketches are technically more impressive and visually more interesting to look at. Communicating through hints of shape and pops of color without being literal is really hard.

    I like both, but righty loosely is the one that feels more expressive, which I always gravitate toward. I'm learning a great deal from your posts! I often get my sketches to the stage of lines being down and then choke when it comes to adding in the layers of color and shadow- I either don't go far enough or overdo it. You mentioned the recurring fear of the drawing never progressing past the "a five-year-old did this" phase: it's the same for me and I was grateful to hear someone else say it!! Glad to have discovered your channel. :)

      Ha ha - my boyfriend gets frustrated if he hears me complaining my sketch looks like a 5 year old has done it...because I say it every time...and 99% of the time it comes out totally fine. It just has to go through the ugly stage - its a rite of passage...! Glad you enjoyed the video :)

    @blackbird7005 Год назад +1

    They both have their own charm tbh. I like the fact that you just get on with it as usually a clean page can be quite daunting along with fear of it not working and looking terrible. I don't think it matters one bit that you're not a 'trained artist' as you are learning your skill as you go. I found my Uni Fine Art course useless for training in this respect as we had to do 'exactly' what you are doing now in finding your own way. You can choose to be a loose sketcher/painter or take the more design/architectural option perfectly sketching your vanishing line but the choice is always ours and it's our unique mark making that is recognisable just to us. We'll never get everyone to like our work but that happens whatever style you have so good for you. I think you do great and more than that, you're inspirational to us all with your encouragement and learned tips ;) Loving your vids.

    I like both sketches but #2 the best I like working loosely the work comes out more dynamic, Happy I found your channel I'm trying to get back into watercolor after being sick for a while, your work is inspiring. A bit of splattering around is good never know what you'll get at random I was painting a fishing boat in a harbor from a photo one of my instructors had taken got a light grey splash into the sky area of the sketch I was doing after I had stepped away and had a fresh look that little splash looked like a seagull flying away so I added a little bit to define it a bit more, I thought I had ruined it then was very happy with it. thankyou for your channel.

    I love them both. I think seeing them side by side, I would "purchase" the tight one because I can see the details that were left out of the loose one. But if I just saw the loose one on its own, I would put down money on it too. You definitely inspire me to not put so much pressure on myself. And I love the idea of letting the first watercolor layer determine the edges of the house. Very organic result. Beautiful!
