Love the way your brain works. I am the same. Muscle memory and intuition takes all the panic out of shooting and turns it back into a joy. The R6 with its total lack of consistency drove me out of my mind. I sold it. I'm back to the 5D II and got a dedicated cinema camera for moving images. Cos the cinema camera has all the stuff where it should be too.
Hi Michael, great video. All makes sense. Just one thing I don't know if anyone in the comments has written already. But the lock button has to be programmed in the menu to work. I tried it many times and, as it didn't work, I thought my camera was broken. Then I realised that there is a "multi function lock" switch at page 5 of the wrench menu. Once you select it you can choose which dial/dials/button the lock has to work on. One of the option is the rear scroll wheel. You select it and you are done! Keep up with the good work Michael! Greetings from Italy
Musica ad orecchio Thanks so much for reaching out and I actually did not know that so thanks for sharing!. I must have set that early on when I got the camera or maybe for mine it was set that way by default to lock the rear scroll! That’s actually great that you can change it to lock out certain things. I am going to check that now on the EOS R and see if I can tweak it to suit my needs! Thanks so much for your comment and for checking out my videos! 👌🏻🙏🏻
Musica ad orecchio yes it does! Your comment actually helped me solve a problem I was having with the EOS R control ring. It prompted one of my 5 points from my latest upload! Thanks so much for reaching out.
Yes! My old hobby camera had the front wheel change my aperture and switching to this camera had me feeling like I was all thumbs and really having to think and fight my muscle memory... this customization takes me back to what feels natural! Thumbs up 👍🏽
To me one of the biggest features in this category, which is new, yet kinda hidden is the, "Back button focus on steroids," because you can be in one shot, with a single focus point, shutter is your focus, meter, and shutter, but you hold AF on and it changes to AI Servo, whatever case you choose, like Case 1, and whatever AF mode you chose, like 4 AF point cluster. Then when you let go of the AF on button, it goes back to one shot, one AF point, whatever case is set. Then you can hold down the star button and it'll go to AI servo again, whatever case you set, and a different AF mode, such as Zone AF. I would have never known they added that as it's not obvious until I seen the video called back button focus on steroids. I would have never thought that was there. Another really nice feature in the 5D Mark IV, exposure comp in manual mode with auto ISO. Before if you were in auto ISO in Manual mode and the photo or video was too dark, nothing you could do but change the ISO manually. Now you can stay in M mode, giving you control of shutter and aperture but if it's too dark or too bright you can hold the set button hit the shutter wheel and dial in some exposure comp. I use the set button for that and the new AF button for ISO.
Another reason that this works well is if you use both M and Av - aperture remains on the front scroll wheel in both modes. Whereas with the default settings, you have to remember that in manual your thumb controls aperture.
@@MichaelDrowley I’ve shot with the 5D classic for 15 years; the controls aren’t customisable. My brain has always been caught out by this! I’ve just upgraded to the Mk IV and it’s the first thing I changed. Bliss! 🤣
Awesome trick, thanks for that! Gonna change it on my mark IV asap. Bang Haha, another comment was a good one which I had never thought of; someone mentioned that they have always just thought of the bottom of the scroll wheel relating to direction and not the top! That solves one issue, but not the shutter being in the camera (back) and Aperture in the lense (front) issue. Haha
great video! keep it up, ive been shooting on the 5d series for 6 years now and this is the first time ive seen a video on changing the wheels directions and functions so it really messed me up when it made so much sense, its just something no one really thinks about or questions
THUMBS UP
