- I was headed to the small European country of Malta for my five year wedding anniversary and got a few dives in. A lot of the country is a marine park which makes shore diving difficult. A beautiful country with some fantastic food & wines. Highly recommended for a visit. I used to live in Malta for a few month per year when I was a kid and used to dive seven days a week for octopus and mullet etc, sometimes we saw rays and small sharks after storms and rough seas, we mostly went in by where the famous film studios were near kalkara. Best time of my life!

I noticed on your GoPro there wasn’t a red film with absorption the photos look washed out and it saves time of editing that color back in to buy a red clip on filter. They aren’t too expensive and make it look wayyy better. Just a friendly tip from a diver to the next ( certified last week yay!)
Difference is freedivers go up and down making surface footage useless with a red filter. You really need a custom white balance to make a big difference.

Reef hunting in the Med Sea should be more hot by diving just before and after the sunrise or before the sunset... at the time predators have been using to do pattroling close to the shore...

Nice video buddy, but next time you go there travel to Gozo, our neighbouring island and visit these places Dwejra and Dahlet Qorrot, in Malta, go to L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha, Fomm ir-Rih and Xghajra, trust me you can catch a blue shark, tuna and thresher sharks too if you are lucky and only after 5am and after 5pm, best times, also you will see loads of octopus running around coming out for food, and if you like Moray u are in Moray Paradise. Best of luck.

Loved the Shark vid. I speared my first Tiger Shark at 12 years old off the coast of Catalina island. I weighed 74 lbs. The shark 128lbs. Fought to keep it from dragging me out to the deep for 45 minutes, b4 finally dragging it to shore. They didn’t have gopros back then, but my friend and 500+ people got to see it. Keep up the Great vids...

We have these sargos in Greece as well and they are difficult to shoot in open water , usually I hunt then in holes and between rocks because due to the low lighting they are more calm and they can't see you that we'll .take care

Welcome to med spearfishing ! It s a bit difficult to get a dentex. Usually you have to know the exact locations and aspeto quite deep. Great mentality though , you 've capture the essentials of free dive and spearfishing . 👍

It looks like there are no fish in the Med, except tiny panfish and bait. It’s been the cradle of life for millennia, but seems fished out! You married well...a cutie who lets you spearfish on your anniversary! Well done!
It’s definitely overfished but still some big fish in there to be had for sure. I just don’t have the skills yet to get them.
Daniel, don't feel bad about not catching much in the Med. Unfortunately it's a very overfished body of water. Particularly Malta. Also, locals are highly protective of their good fishing spots so will never point you in the right direction. For them a large Grouper means a good bit of money when sold to the restaurants. This counts for Italy as well as Malta. So when there just take it as it comes and enjoy it.

Can somebody please explain a bit more about Dan's reason for using the drop weight and tieing it to his float when shore fishing ?
I can't even say I'm a proper "beginner" yet because I haven't actually begun......but i've definitely decided I'm going to give it a try, with a pole spear initially.....ANY good advice would be welcome. I'll be swimming off the shore of Goa and Karnataka (India).

Would you share where you bought that "quick release" mechanism that attaches to the belt? The one that holds the weight you like to use for the float when shore diving.
It’s an entire weight in itself not an attachment per se. I made it myself after borrowing the mold for it. The guy who sells them now is Tony Heugh from Superfrog spearguns in Australia. I lost this one recently so I’ve bought myself a mares quick release weight which seems to be doing the job nicely.

Daniel Mann funny thing that cycling legs only are good for cycling! That said, everytime I watch one of your Vida I get keen for a di and these days it's about getting a feed for the kids and teaching them where their food comes from. Don't get the time to chase big fish for week-long trips at a time anymore. It's getting warm here, so the answer is YES!
My brother cycles a lot and when he dives he seems to swim damn fast. I’m also getting a bit more mellow on killing everything and focusing on a feed. Went diving on the weekend and didn’t pull the trigger despite seeing lots of eating fish, just wanted to cook crispy skin sea bass. Next time eh.

Hey i live in Malta and got fined for spear fishing close to marine park because mostly it it never went to this place do you remember the location. I only found few spots next to cliff at dingli and others are dangerous we had people being stuck in small caves for three days and some died.

the place you dove was the seen of where 2 men got washed out to sea for a day or two if i remember correctly (1 local 1 foreign friend of the local) i cant remember if thats zurrieq or not.(im a local)

Happy anniversary ! Great filming and great place to dive ! Also, if you’re really into Dentex hunting, next time that you’ll try to catch them, try being in the water either really early in the morning like sunrise or really late like during the sunset.

Hey Daniel, have you had problems with spearfishing gear in Malta. Have read somewhere that there are problems in bringing the speargun entering the country.
I’ve only been this one trip and didn’t have any issues.
