What a cracking video buddy. Brings back happy memories. I was in Malta in 1988. I think I was about 17. Showing my age now. !!!!! we were catching some of them, bream using bread. I got a little cheap fishing rod from a little tackle shop. Well it was more of a shop that sold bit of everything really. Anyway we were sat in between these big boats on the harbour. Me and my old man. Drinking glass bottles of Coca-Cola. Anyway, the shop had some little spinner lures so we bought a couple. I remember casting one out in between these two boats. All of a sudden this large torpedo shaped fish which I can only assume was a barracuda came out of nowhere like lightning. In my panic and before my underpants could fill up with something rather unpleasant , I reeled in as fast as I could. I remember looking at my dad and saying what F …! It was the fact that I didn’t know what I was going to do with it when I actually managed to land it. It must’ve been about 2 foot long. !! Then again everything seems bigger when you’re younger. Like bars of chocolate. I’m sure they get smaller over the years. !!! there was allsorts of fish all over the place. This obviously was over 30 years ago. From what you have said, I think you could possibly be right. Obviously everyone is catching and eating fish of different sizes. They should have put the smaller ones back but some countries don’t bother and aren’t like us Brits as we care about everything. And so we should. The way things are going if we don’t look after what we have there won’t be a lot left for our future generations. If we were all a bit selfless, im sure the world would be a much better place. … it’s when you watch the nature programmes with David Attenborough on. He is so passionate about everything on and around our planet … certainly need a lot more people like him around. Like watching yours and George’s videos. You guys always bring up things like the environment and caring for fish and wildlife.. It’s not just about catching a fish. It’s about enjoying being in and around a different environment not a lot of people get to see. Angling certainly gets us closer to lots of things some people only see on the TV.. Big thumbs up to you buddy and all the best to you and the family 👍😊🎣…. Blimey !!! Where did all that waffle come from 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
John, by far the best comment I have ever had to a video!!! What a story and don’t care what age you are seeing a Barra bomb out and smash your lure is a mad rush and pretty bloody scary!! It’s a funny one, let’s be honest the locals taking the small fish isn’t the problem it’s the larger commercial fleets just swiping everything :( but on a micro level it does make a difference some of these fish spend their whole lives in that harbour! However, at the moment it is what it is and it’s horrendously sad 😔 thank you for watching John and thank you for commenting as always!!! ✌️👌
Unfortunately you fished in the central part of Malta which is very built up and full of marinas. The best place to go shore jigging or spinning is either in the rural south or the north where there are more reefs, cliffs and less construction. Or else next time try the grand harbor of Valletta where I catch 2kg blue runners and amberjacks from shore with a piece of Squid
@@chiuandrew unfortunately the breakwater of the grand harbour has a fence because the bridge is incomplete, so I would suggest either fishing from Valletta near goal fast ferry terminal or cliff fishing in a rural area like blata tal-melh for amberjacks and mahi mahi

My friends taught me to fish there off the cliffs at night (ghar hasan was a good spot) and we cast out with the 2 hooks and decent weight. Use imperial worm. Leave with bell attached and sip beers waiting for the jingle. We would usually catch nice size bream. Those fish you were catching a lot of - we would look for when scuba diving with spear guns.. they would stay still and point towards octopus so we would look for them 🙂. Loved this video - brought back memories. 😊

Great to see sunshine and fish. Thanks for another great video. I fished in Malta about 20 years ago and was amazed to see locals throwing everything they caught into a dry bucket, nothing was returned. Great cake and pastry shops and cafes.
One of the main causes of the dwindling fish stocks around the Maltese islands is the lack of enforcement of rules. You go to potentially good fishing spots such as Qawra point or Blue grotto and you end up seeing hundreds of metres long gillnets just 30-40m from the shore. I met many Maltese complaining about that but nothing happened.
It’s shocking and love your profile pic btw! It’s a key reason if legislation is in place even if it’s disobeyed it’s a deterrent and something that can be acted on, if there is nothing then it’s a free for all! Some will break the rules but most won’t and that’s so important
absolutely correct, unfortunately politicians making laws regulating fishing will mean less votes, and none of them have the balls to go ahead and do that. money trumps everything on this rock :) nonetheless we have a great potential for massive pelagic fish, i hope that in the future something is done about this ravaging of gillnets and the insanely rampant ignorance among recreational fishermen. not a single fish is released
@@japanesefishingadventures I think that the best way to tackle the problem is to promote leisure fishing. Fishing in Malta is a tradition, and still a source of livelihood, with artisanal fishing still in practice to feed associated restaurants and contributing to families overall income. The depletion of stock of commercial fish is driving folk to target bays with gillnets. The same community need to be turned into the protectors of the sea and still earn a living from it. This can be done through fishing tourism in the winter and early shoulder months. Catch and release obviously - though there are some sustainable species that when at the right size can be kept. In particular, a variety of bream species.

Gary that sounds like a lovely idea and totally onboard pardon the pun!!! 😀 lucky man being from Malta what a lovely country and island!
Curious random question! Im interested to travel with my personal fishing gear but how can i travel with fishing rod and lures ? Any problems during checks ? Any tips . Great videos !! Keep them coming
Hi Leon! Hope you’re all good and thank you for your kind words! Compact fishing rods are critical! And rigged and ready travel rods are the perfect provider! Small rods that fit perfectly in your luggage! I’ve had no issues with hooks and spoons in hand luggage and normal luggage - not sure if I have just been lucky with hand luggage! But you’re only issue is tools (hand luggage is a no and carry on is fine!) highly recommend the fishing and travelling vibe! It’s pretty special 🥹
@@japanesefishingadventures thank you so much! Youve been very helpful
The fish you wanted to identify (the long one) is a Lizardfish (probably an Atlantic Lizardfish)
Thank you kind sir! Was intrigued when catching it and maybe one day I will
Know the names of the fish I catch 😂😂 thank you for watching pal!!
Best to fish is north and find small cliffs in malta😊
I wish I’d known this when I was there! It was more a relaxed hol with some fishing thrown in so was just happy to have a bend in the rod!!
The third fish is a ‘Tailor’ in Australia.
Mate you little legend thank you💪
@@japanesefishingadventures we call them ‘Chopper Tailor’ because their sharp teeth cut like scissors. They’ll bite anything near their mouth to escape.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Tom! Wishing you a belter and a great years fishing 😀
@@japanesefishingadventures Cheers mate! You always seem to have such a jolly time. I need to take it less seriously 😂
The fish are in the harbours😉
Hahaha 🤣🤣 it was so frustrating not being able to fish in some of them, it’s like the fish know they are safe and migrate to the no fishing areas. Won’t lie I love that they do that haha!! 🤣
im from malta i love fishing
Nice vid, i ‘ll be going to Malta in April, do you think is gonna be a good period? What could I aim to in that period?
I was amazed by seeing you basking under 20 degree’s in mid January
The fishing should really be stepping up by then my friend from all accounts it’s. A great time of year!! Weather even warmer and the fish starting to migrate back to the area!! Good luck sir - you’ll have a blast!
Species wise - there’s a hell of a lot, but Barra, Tuna if you’re lucky and sea bass!
you have mahi mahi migrating down for breeding if you are lucky you can snag a 20 to 30 kg mahi mahi from shores . even albacore will be in season also up to 30 kg . good luck .. look me up if you are in gozo
@@garysammut4458 I read about this :( but think I arrived abit late for it! I certainly will mate 👌
@@garysammut4458Hello am currently in Malta and looking for spots to do some shore jighig and popping.. do you have any recommendations? Also id love to have a fishing buddy !
Maltese is a very interesting language, lots of maltese people in Australia...well not millions but definitely a healthy population.
It’s a very interesting language with so many different languages and influences on it! Thank you for watching fella:D
Nice🎉
Thanks man!!
Any dodgy fish out there like weevers 🎣
Didn’t stumble upon any, but some funky gobies in the rock pools!!
Gobie was a weaver fish which is poisonous.
Thank you man!! Thought it was abit big for a weaver tho!?!
That fish is a lizardfish that you thought was a goby
Thank you mate! This is why I love RUclips!
No problem !
Just discovered your channel and Subscribed, It was lovely watching these fish being released and that's what we want in Malta. 6:11 was a Blue runner (Sawrella Imperjali) and 16:53 was a Lizard fish (Skalm) just be carful from poison Weevers (Tracna) as we have a lot. well done 👍
Hi Steve thanks for commenting and thank you for subscribing - top man!! What’s better than seeing a fish swim off?!? 🤣 genuinely my favourite part of the whole fishing experience!! Thank you so much for this ✌️ beyond appreciated and aye those weaver fish are seriously dangerous 🤣 no one needs that trouble! Thanks again and have a smashing season 😃
@@japanesefishingadventures Thanks mate, you too✌
