I’ve been an automotive tech for over 10 years and have installed a ton of used engines and have never done more than exterior seals. The time and money between machine shops and rebuild parts cost more than a remanufactured engine. The biggest thing is knowing what to look for when using a junkyard engine.

There would have been a lesser chance of this happening and they would have saved themselves the headache. Imo I would be fine with leaving it with throtl if they were going to do a full rebuild, plus the new owner has plans for more power and I personally wouldn't be comfortable trying to make more power on an engine that hasn't at least been rebuilt. Wouldn't you think theyd want to do the fastest route with is just buy another? Lol just to tear down the valve train takes 19+hrs on these motors(with a expert), that's not including pulling/dropping the motor, putiing it back and refilling fluids, etc. Swap a couple of valve covers/pieces on the outside and be done. @Macks MR2's (especially SW20's i.e. the model in this video) are very much a "cockpit" feel, you are quite literally surrounded quite closely by "the car", i.e., the big hump/centre consul in the interior is actually where the fuel tank is, for front/rear balance/ideal weight distribution purposes....
      I'm 6'4" & own a hardtop ( i.e. no sun roof/s ) & I'm a snug ass fit - i use the maximum seat rearwards travel but I'm perfectly comfortable once I'm in.
I have worked out a technique of getting in as even the O.E.M seats had reasonably big ( for an O.E.M seat) side bolsters ( adjustable!!!) most aftermarket seats are, - really a bit too big 4 MR's.
      Some "Bride" models fit O.K.
The O.E.M seats are already pretty much on the floor & are at the sill level.... = lower centre of gravity = better cornering ability...
If you ever get to look in the "Frunk" (front trunk) check out the battery location - as low as possible.... Excellent design ideas off of the drawing board....

Uneven pressure from an aggressive clutch can cause lateral force to rear main. In drag racing you test the pressure plate fins for lb loads. I went through 13 pressure plates from SPEC with load rates varying greater than 50% between odd # fins before they fixed a manufacturing issue in 09. It was a $4k multi disc, but the principles are the same on $300 puck OSGekin, TDK, CM etc etc . The uneven nature of most pressure plates doesn’t cause major issues until to move from organic to ceramic or mixed compound clutch pads. It costs $35 to dial check a Flywheel, $65 for lb rating clutch fins on a PP & thousands of not tens of thousands in costs of you don’t. A good sign is throw out failure esp if you gone to poly or solid trans mounts. The torque has nowhere else to except to the Mtr mounts through the crank or into the exit shaft of the trans.

Awesome how you guys handled this. No moaning or complaining just working to a suitable solution, because we all know mechanical stuff can breakdown and sometimes it is less obvious why it did. But in this case I believe it had something to do with a high mileage.

The noise can be heard at 6:49...before that pull. Good on you guys for tearing into it and making it right.

There are parts that need to be replaced from any engine coming from a junkyard. The oil pump and timing components should always be replaced. Checking the bearings clearances wouldn't hurt. You can assume the piston rings and headgaskets are good if they ran it at the yard with coolant in it.

I’ve spun a few and they didn’t sound like that! Guess this one was getting ready to send a rod through the block. Great you guys stood behind your work 👍

The engine must have been weak because what he did on the test drive definitely did not cause the damage

True was thinking the same thing! The engine was her before it arrived at the shop! But asking at the shop does what is right an fixes it! There a good shop in my book.

I think it's awesome that you guys are showing this and doing right buy this customer. Having said that, if I were you I would do everything possible to ensure that motor is healthy even if it means getting it finished later than anticipated. Even if it means pulling the motor apart and inspecting the bearing surfaces and piston rings. It's more work than just a motor swap but it's less work than doing a motor swap for a potential third time.

Very cool of Throtl to not only give away such a rad ride, but to get to the bottom of the noise, and make plans to fix it right away without no excuses or questions. Man, I would love to have a car like this one day!
