I did the tour of Holborn disused platforms a few weeks ago. We all stood on the platforms craning our necks to watch the Picadilly train pass the junction.
Great stuff, Dale - most definitely a novel view for me and probably many other viewers of yours... i.e. "us lot"! I'm one of those people who prefers to travel facing backwards on main line trains, so I found this strangely relaxing. Thank you for seizing the opportunity to record that journey, and in particular the view of the Aldwych branch line near Holborn (especially as it's something I didn't get to see in my time with LU). I hope you're having a good week!
Lovely bonus video, thanks so much. I am getting to know the Picc line so well even though I hardly ever travel on it. I love that you are on the "fast" line, District is slooow! As someone else said, all the more for "us lot". Keep it up Dale, great work.
Nice video Dale - thanks. The evening light above ground is great. The slow-mo view of the Aldwych branch junction came out well too. I cycled over that bridge with the entrance to Barons Court most days when I was at college in 1983-4.
Thanks for this - I think you did a good job of holding the camera steady. A rear view is an interesting change to the normal forward views, and it was very interesting to see that view of the Aldwych branch especially!
Ooh the back end (trailer). That's a great alternate. And good reason to get assigned to the end cab. Instruction is always quality, and love that change of scene.
I always get excited when you pass my home station, Barons Court. I've travelled on the Piccadilly Line all my life, first on the 1938 stock ( my favourite). It never occurred to me when I left school to apply for a job on the Underground, I wish I had though. I do enjoy watching your videos. I did once get a view from the front cab of the 1938 stock on a heritage run as it came out of the tunnel and into Barons Court - I was so happy I forgot to film it.
In 1982, I boarded a central line train at Epping bound for Heathrow via Holborn. I was in the rear car, and the driver who was changing ends, left the rear cab door open for me so i could observe the rear view. He asked me to close the door when id had enough. I decided to shut the door around leytonstone when the carriage became busy. It was a. great view and i really appreciate the drivers trust in me. i was surprised to see an indicated 65mph on the speedo between Loughton and Snaresbrook even though traveling in reverse. I'd really love to experience a cab ride from the front, but i'm rarely in the essex area these days, Thanks Dale for these videos. very eye opening.
Hi Dale, quick question. If you could drive on any other line, which one would you choose? Thanks for watching your videos and I highly recommend doing an Arsenal home game video. Love your videos, Freddie.
Thanks, Dale. It was fascinating to see the from the other end. Presumably the now-disused third Holborn Picc Line platform was down that spur somewhere.
Nice one Dale Big difference going backwards and great look down the aldwich branch, thanks for doing that off to the canaries tomorrow for couple of weeks so I'll have to catch up on return, if I'm not wrong you are due to fly to NYC so have a great time all the best Mark D.
Another amazing video, Dale, tnx. My friends and I in Toronto can't get enough. I just wish we had a transport system like the London Underground here. The TTC or Toronto Transit Commission only has 3 lines, and they are all sub-surface
Every time I come to London, I love riding the tube. The Picc is my favorite because we obviously get the train from Heathrow into London. We will be there next summer......I would love to ride in the cab with you if possible. 🙏
Brilliant video seeing things from the rear view. I used to love travelling in the rear of the old DMUs watching where I'd come from! A fan from South Yorkshire. I don't get to London very often but I love travelling on the Underground. Always fascinated me from being a child.
l always watch your vids multiple times, and have just watched this one for the fifth time, there is something fascinating about the rear view. (No, stop it.) l will be watching again later.
Great footage, I think I like it better. Have you looked into extra lenses or mods for the GO PRO that would give the same Depth of Field/Focal Length as your mobile. Some video makers use the phone as Camera and it serves no function as phone ( no service ). You can get all manner of mods and attachments which would make it more or less a camera rather than a phone. Of course your job comes first so it may not be an option to ask managers to pass such a device. Anyway, thanks Dale, the video is looking fab.
Thank you for another great video, Dale. It may have been better to actually turn the cab light off to stop the glare in the top right hand corner of the screen. But as you say, seeing the train travel in reverse is certainly a new experience.
Actually really cool to see a way different perspective of the tracks and tube. I agree that your phone does a better job than the gopro camera, you can see a lot more in the darker tube shots. Thanks for your videos, fun and informative!!
Brilliant! That was something different and interesting. A good view down the Aldwych line, they even had the lights on! Your phone takes really a good picture.Pretty exciting things happen during your working don't they? Not many times a driver gets his train stolen! 🙃🥴🤔
Great bonus - interesting to see trains in the west direction and the signals changing from red to green when the track ahead becomes clear (just like you've described when you're driving).
@@watson956it was basically cross platform. I recall using it a few times back in the 80s. If you changed from the westbound to the Aldwych shuttle it was more of a hike as the two Piccadilly platform tunnels are stacked one above the other rather than side by side as is more normal.
Brilliant Bonus, If you were holding that all the way you have a super steading hand, Amazing the quality of phone cameras these days. Thanks for thinking of us lot when you have the chance to film something different
I think your phone actually shows (at least the outside) a lot better than your GoPro - shame you can't use it in the cab... A thoroughly enjoyable video though all the same; thanks very much!
Loving the different perspective Dale, it must have felt weird having your train hijacked (All be it for a good reason) and you end up watching where you have been rather than where you are going. Has that ever happened to you before🤔. Bonus for us though we got this extra video. 👍. Considering you were using your phone the picture and sound quality was excellent (The lens quality is usually somewhat better than a Go Pro) and you must have a "Gimble hand" hardy any shake at all. 😲.
I have had my train stolen a few times by an instructor. It’s better when they take it and I can go home early 🤣🤣. I held the phone against the glass. I don’t have a gimble hand
Hello Dale. Happy to ride a long with you. There's nothing wrong with the camera of your phone. Funny to drive reverse. Thanks for the bonus video. I wish you a good evening. Until the next video
Excellent video. I learned that (1) The platforms at some of the stations (such as Barons Court) are much longer than the trains (I assume this is to accommodate the longer District Line trains) (2) I didn't know that there was a stop sign or a fixed red signal at the end of every platform heading in the "wrong" direction. Great footage of the Aldwych branch as well.
Really interesting and different perspective thanks Dale. Intriguing how much better the phone camera is at picking up the difference between yellow and red signals when they are some distance away - on my laptop screen you have to be pretty close to them before it becomes clear if the signal is yellow or red on the GoPro, usually long after you have told us.
Hi Dale. Nice POV video. You don't often get this type of video. The "footage" from your phone was great. The trainee seemed to be doing a good job of driving. "Two red lights in front of us"? I think you meant behind us!
another new insight. Just before 9.15 into the video you see just how the signals go to red very shortly after the front of the train passes on green, You also get a great perspective on the amber warning of red ahead doing the run in this direction, and how close some of those are to the red coming next. thanks.
I am impressed that there is no grafiti at the stations. There are video monitoring so the criminals never dare trying. I wonder what are drivers doing if you spot unauthorized people near the track?
This view makes the train seem much smaller with the view much closer to track level. Funny how a different camera makes for a different viewing angle.
Probably for drainage and to prevent erosion of the embankment. The Richmond branch of the District diverges there and is often forced to close in heavy rainfall due to flooding between Turnham Green & Gunnersbury. The Fishers Lane underpass about 100yds west of that frequently has a couple of feet of water in it after a heavy downpour. www.google.com/maps/@51.4950449,-0.2595194,103m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkxNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
Absolutely no reason to apologise for anything Dale - this is a unique view which we’d probably never get to see otherwise. Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍🏽
Spot on! What a great bonus video & the unique viewing!
They 'stole' your train! 🥰🥰 Well, good for us lot, as we get a bonus video! 😁
Dale got hijacked! xD
@@Cycling.Doughnut Trainjacked!! lol
Nearly 15 minutes of extra wittering on and views from the cab of a train? YES PLEASE!
You certainly get a different perspective of going uphill and downhill from the back cab. Great little bonus Dale...thank you, all the best.
I did the tour of Holborn disused platforms a few weeks ago. We all stood on the platforms craning our necks to watch the Picadilly train pass the junction.

That's a great view of the Aldwych branch. All those years I worked by Holborn station and never used the Aldwych train.
Love that glimpse down the Aldwych branch towards the disused platform at Holborn.
Reminds me of when I was a guard on the Piccadilly line!
Lovely bonus video, thanks so much. I am getting to know the Picc line so well even though I hardly ever travel on it. I love that you are on the "fast" line, District is slooow! As someone else said, all the more for "us lot". Keep it up Dale, great work.
Great bonus Dale, came out fine. Different perspective going backwards. Nice one! 😊 👍
The sound is perfect
Sensational view, something I wasn’t expecting and wouldn’t know what was like until I saw. Absolutely surprising, which is good, thanks Dale.
That's a nice perspective looking backwards, you see some things you wouldn't otherwise. Props for managing to keep it so steady!!
Wow I loved this, especially the tunnel depth from Barons Court, which also used to amuse me as people lost mobile signals!
Nice video Dale - thanks. The evening light above ground is great. The slow-mo view of the Aldwych branch junction came out well too. I cycled over that bridge with the entrance to Barons Court most days when I was at college in 1983-4.
Ooo a drivers view, in reverse!!! Well, rear cab that is. It's like you're going back in TIME!!
Enjoyed that, thank you. Excellent quality too given the impromptu nature of the filming!
Thanks for this - I think you did a good job of holding the camera steady. A rear view is an interesting change to the normal forward views, and it was very interesting to see that view of the Aldwych branch especially!
Ooh the back end (trailer).

Thanks Dale, a fascinating alternative view, and the glimpse of Aldwych was a bonus!
Really cool getting a view out the back such a different perspective. Thanks Dale
hi dale what a great video it was nice to see a bit of the Aldwych line what a lovely bonus for a Wednesday
Loved going backwards, thank you. Both video and sound quality excellent.😊
Love the warm yellow lights from passing trains. 💡

Great video, a whole new perspective, the underground backwards . Hope the trainee didn't spill your coffee 👍🏴
Great stuff Dale, thank you.
Nice change to have a view from your rear end so to speak.
Cheers
Nice bonus video especially having that slowed down glimpse of the Aldwych line with the lights on... Cheers.
Really enjoyed this alternate view. Amazing how the rear view appears to be faster.
Glad you enjoyed it Paul

When you shut down a cab the cab light comes on automatically. The only way to turn it off is with the MCBs. If I don’t touch them I can’t break them

Thanks to you, and also thanks to TfL for allowing it.
I enjoyed this a lot. Somehow seems so much smoother from the back 😅 Thanks, Dale.
Shows the superior sensor on your phone camera is able to capture and process the available light better than a go-pro 👍

Cool view. And you were right when you said shakes the rear😅
Great insight Dale, different going backwards, hope they looked after your train😂

The go pro does have its limits. For me the size of the go pro makes it worth using. Not much space for big cameras on the train
Great video Dale, the iPhone did it well. Thx 🙏
Enjoyed this bonus, your brain was probably freaking out visualizing going forward but seeing the opposite where you been.
