Always wanted to do it, so many people said if you’re going to see Hokkaido, best to do it on Motorcycle - and they were right! Sometimes HOW you travel is the trip itself and Hokkaido was made to be ridden by motorcycle!
The editing is exceptional. I couldn't imaging taking on a monster like this. It must have taken hours/days just to find the music, which was spot on in every scene. Thank you John for this documentary video. I have new perspective regarding Hokkaido… in a warm way. Before this video, I had no desire to to go to Hokkaido. I have changed my mind. You and PVG are great together. Real synergy 😊
I’m really glad to hear this. Hokkaido was the last of the 4 main Islands I visited in Japan. I think besides the Snow Festival, there wasn’t any BIG reason to visit but over the last 10 years, it’s really opened up. Cooler in the summer, comfortable - long days of sunshine, food and nature is another level of amazing and of course there is a lot of Japanese culture here to immerse into just like in other places without the crowds. And driving and riding here is perfect!
I got to go to Hokkaido earlier this year during the Winter. It's so cool seeing the area in a warmer time of the year, I really wanna go back again during this time period at some point to experience it for myself. Otaru was a fun place to go around and I recognized a few other region names from my travels there.
Its amazing you didnt cut the falling parts. It really reassures that this can happen to anybody and that you are not taken to the police by instant XD
Don’t cut parts that are embarrassing, I think that isn’t helpful. It does happen to new riders and anyone who thinks they’re perfect needs to remember they’re not. I will never forget it with this video 😂
… because his job is narrating TV shows like in NHK 😂 he was the voice of the ANA airline’s safety video and many other attractions around the country.
Discovery channel we deserved! Amazing job, John and Peter, just amazing! Respect from bikers of Armed Forces of Ukraine. Hope we'll have these rider's houses (41:40) in Ukraine after the war. Looking forward to see sequel of this epic show 20 years later - starring Joji von Gomm and Leo Daub. :) Let the crashpads be with you! (for not to brake levers, pedals, and mirrors). ;)
Hey guys, wanted to say huge thanks from Australia for your motorcycling in Hokkaido vid. Watched it and immediately thought We gotta do that! Rented bike from 819, stayed at Kitukituki and ate (twice) at Minato sushi. Love this island and its people … and now we’ve done central and west, will be back to do north and east. Thanks again! Ps: hope your riding skills have improved! ;)
We all fall down, why edit that out? I learned from other bikers (who’ve had their ups and downs) and that’s how we get better and safer. Learn from each other even the bad, make it a good.
The added sound track music additions really enhanced the final product and I was glad to see my favorite clips survived. Just went back and checked the "Review" I had originally done and each point was preserved. Here is the Review restated: Informative? Yes, with both historical and cultural narrative from the importance of the Ainu to even the Russian influence on Otaru. Riveting? Yes, with a fast paced storyline that moves as fast as the motorcycles and RV. Dramatic? Yes, with the attack of the Melon Kuma. Suspenseful? Yes, with John's every effort to stay erect on the bike while negotiating turns. Cousine Centric? Yes, with the depiction of meals that could challenge the Food Channel's efforts including sizzling Wagyu steak on a camp stove to succulent fresh cracked Hokkaido crab. Humorous and Witty? Yes, from milking a cow to comical butter making. Moving? Yes, observing from the banter between John and Peter their comradely. Naturalistic? Yes, impressive wild animal encounters from foxes to bears not to mention learning about the role of owls and crows in Ainu Culture.
I was also pleased to see that the "Easter egg" I had discovered in the original Kickstarter video was preserved in the edited RUclips version. At approximately 24 minutes in one can see a Shitoki necklace hanging from the neck of one of the Ainu dancers. A Shitoki necklace, which has cultural significance, is made from historic trading beads with an added medallion and at least one is in the possession of the Ainu Museum in Hokkaido. (When I had learned that the Kickstarter project was to include a visit to the Ainu Museum, I suggested to Peter and John that they might want to locate and film a Shitoki similar to one that my Uncle had passed on to me after its having been gifted to him by the townspeople of Chitose in appreciation for his kindnesses to them when he headed the U.S. Occupation efforts in Hokkaido.) I was most appreciative of Peter's and John's comments to me in their Kickstarter "Shout Out" when John stated, "We weren't able to go and see your contribution to the Ainu National Museum, but we will one day get in there and see it - we'll definitely be back to the area," and Peter added, "And you'll see in the documentary some of the fantastic footage that we got visiting these Ainu villages." What a surprise to have been able to discover a Shitoki in the "documentary" despite their not having been able to enter the museum itself due to COVID (or as the Japanese term it, "Corona") restrictions.
Sensational! Interesting seeing both takes of the trip. Was this work? Because it certainly didn't look like it! 😁 Didn't catch all the live streams - Missed that visit to the Toy Museum in Noboribetsu. As something of a toy collector myself, hope you do get another chance to do a full story of that museum in future - That toy collection is downright amazing! That quirky cabin by the roadside was also something of a highlight. 😎
Thanks - but when you compare it to NHK, somehow the video won't do well on RUclips hahaha but that smooth even voice certainly gives it that pro feeling like a TV show.
Hi John , this was great. I love it!!! Im curious, did you have to pay much for the "damage" to the bike? Just curious. I loved it all, not just the scenery, but the food, drone shots and even Peters commentary. Cheers, Melb Australia
Same, then one day I pulled the trigger and I was on a Hokkaido highway going 80km/hr to a volcanic hot spring town! Haha - nope, I got dinged about $200 but all repairable and nothing major. Haven’t dropped a bike since 🤘

This was so much fun rewatching as I first saw it when you posted for early release. From June 11-17 I explored Sapporo, Furano, Noboribetsu, Otaru, and Hakodate. It was cool seeing you visit some of the same places I did such as Jigokudani and Farm Tomita!!!
i will say this again, the narration in your videos are top notch! they really got me through a tough time this year! and "rental 819 (ha-i-ku)" cool name!

Not many know this but, in Japan it is considered Good Luck to drop your motorcycle 3 times in a short period of time, while standing still! But hey, at least he wasn't going 60...
🍀 I haven’t dropped a bike since my first 12 hours, good luck 🇯🇵 yeah, I was fine when I’m moving. It was turning slow which is a skill that can be mastered with experience even for riders who’ve a few years of riding under their belt.
@@onlyinjapan Just bustin' your chops there... as a rider of over 40 years, we all still have our "moments" when it gets away from us, you just have to stay calm and hope for the best, which is what I wish for you!
Glad to hear it, I streamed before the pandemic to bring people with me on the adventures and the channel was a stop to get info on what was happening during *that* time. And some indoor camping ⛺️ 😂 It’s good that it’s back to normal and I can do something like this again!
No way! I trained on the CB400 and hadn’t used another bike until this trip. Maybe I should have used the CB400 instead but the 400X was pretty awesome. You don’t train on a 400cc bike for weeks then go get a scooter! I passed the test, I’m going with 400cc! Again, as the comments come in, the next 3 days we’re flawless because humans learn and (some) even get better 😂
I found 2 mistakes with audio and video glitches, but got a lot of feedback. Majority said it was too long and some said to break it into short 10 min segments … but I think 2 is better. I also want to give the proper attention to the RV and it gets lost with being combined with the motorcycle. It hurts now 😞 really sad about taking it offline - had to time it as a best I could - but it made more sense for the channel and the viewers who hadn’t started watching yet. It wasn’t an easy decision, still dreading it.
Oh dear John had many mishaps. hope you are fine! pretty awesome video! wanted to explore with motorcycle rental since long time ago. thanks for introduction.
I really enjoy your videos. Been watching for a few years now. Here is a bit of useless information: I'm pretty sure Rental 819 means Rental Bike. Here's what I mean. I am a huge Yazawa Eikichi fan and I know that, among Eichan fans, the license plate number 830 is very popular. 8-3-0 means Ya-za-wa. I had phone numbers when I was in the US that ended in 8872 and 5385. My wife and I would laugh because they were papa-nani and gomibako (what dad? and garbage can). In Rental 819, the 819 part can be read Ba-i-ku, so Rental 819 is Rental Bike. :)
Lol, I just saw the beginning twice because I saw it from what I assume was a mistake upload, now I'm sad I didn't watch the whole thing before the fix. But then this cliffhanger is good enough.👍🏼👍🏼 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Great Videos. I enjoyed them a lot. I think Johns falling problem was making a tight curve and pulling the break of the front wheel, which isn´t a good combination...
Not in the position I was in, should have had my feet down. I do have good clutch, throttle control but one little hiccup and panic, grab the brake ... on the ground. Hasn't happened since :) much more enjoyable upright with small corrections.
That looked like SOOO MUCH FUN!!!! I would LOVE to go on a small bike tour just like you guys did!!! (And I don't think I would enjoy it here in the states as much as I would in Japan... things are just Better in Japan) - I can't wait to see you RV Journey!!! Another channel I watch that is about an English speaker in Japan just did a short video of him an his fiance in a new style RV that is a converted box truck (but a Japanese box truck, which are MUCH SMALLER than the American style I am used to) It was done really nicely, but it was just too small for having all the amenities they did. I just didn't understand why they used a permanent bed instead of one that folded out of the way, or so type of mechanism to use the space that is taken up by a full size bed... So I am VERY INTRIGUED to see how the inside your RV does things... which I'm guessing is so much better than the converted box truck because it appears like your RV was made by AN RV COMPANY whereas the box truck was built by the truck manufacturer and it was OBVIOUS that they had NO EXPERIENCE designing an RV (I mean like WHO needs DUAL FULL-SIZED computer monitors taking up 2 whole cabinets but only 3 gallons of on-board water for drinking AND the INCLUDED 'SHOWER' but NO TOILET??? - I don't think they know the meaning of the word 'PRIORITIES' lol - but what they DID do, they did very well.... you can check out the video on the 'Abroad in Japan' channel if you'd like to see how NOT to design a RV - jk... [ not really... sssshhhh ] lol :D ) - I can't wait for you video!!! I hope it's just as LONG and ENTERTAINING and JUST AS BEAUTIFUL as this video!!! THANK YOU JOHN AND PETER!!!
Here in the UK, I have just passed my A2 License (meaning I have a full motorcycle license but restricted to around 550cc approximately). I'm looking at buying an MT-07 or Honda CB500X so that I can use the bike as my daily commuter but I'd love to be able to go to France, Germany, Amsterdam, Japan and Italy on either of them - or rent a bike abroad. Any tips for getting started with touring? I'm 21 this year, I'm trying to start a career in the Army but before I do that, I would love to go touring at-least once!!
He told me a lot about his son who makes movies, a little similar to me, in Tokyo :) I took my wife and son to meet him last October. We hope to go visit again this year.
nice to see how both of you commenting in both of your videos. Liked both versions but would have hoped to see more different pictures like you showing stuff Peter didn't and vice versa but yeah makes sense that its almost the same as you probably both used the highlights instead of forcing yourself to use "boring" scenes only to not get doubles. You should make a series like Journey Across Japan with Peter riding trough Japan with the motorbikes.
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think Peter would make a video himself for his channel since this was a OiJ project - but I'm not going to tell him what to do. They seem too similar so I have been a little concerned though it will probably be okay. The RUclips algo doesn't like it - I know that but *who knows for sure*. I'm sure to do more adventure and charitable campaigns over the years because it's fun to do something big like that.
John I never experienced any of the issues you are talking about In the initial upload Again thanks to PVG for keeping u safe Now you did have some math issues and Then there was the parking lot situation and you jinxed the weather situation as well 😂😂😂 Why do John’s beer portions keep getting bigger ? The videography was as always superb
hahaha! I didn't count a fall in the parking lot but yeah, it was a fall so it counts :) PvG ordered the smaller one - just saying - they didn't have anything bigger than 1L and to make a short story shorter, I had to eat 95% of that uni because Peter didn't want it and I couldn't waste it. The suds broke up the battle royal going on below with the food from the deep. Thanks for the feedback. At the service area, the audio was seriously out of sync for 30 seconds. At the sushi restaurant, there was a 15 second miss with the video frame and audio, the video layer was not positioned properly. In the end, I think after all this work we want to make sure the video is perfect for the next 20 years or beyond and I feel confident it is now. My eyes and ears were so tired when I uploaded it. After a week, there won't be any more issue with the "the issue".

Riding motorcycle is not easy i applaud you riding and falling it is part of learning. Hoping to see more motor rides with Peter.
It's good that you lads are more comfortable being out now.
Loved the video John! Watched this your GO channel
Incredibly well produced video, John. Bravo!
A good memory for you and for us! Also love Peter’s voice ❤
I could’ve watched an entire hour of the toy museum. Very cool.
Maybe this can help: ruclips.net/video/ZsrIKelPVU0/видео.html
Thank u for sharing this trip with us. U have an awesome traveling companion
The others guy voice is amazing, it reminds me of those Japanese travels shows that is being narrated in english.
… because his job is narrating TV shows like in NHK 😂 he was the voice of the ANA airline’s safety video and many other attractions around the country.
Great work to all involved.
Let the crashpads be with you!
Ps: hope your riding skills have improved! ;)
They have, during the trip! Rode through rain and darkness, cities - just fine after the first 24 hours :)
fun fact, 819 is ha-i-ku which can be read as baiku, the japanese word for motorcycle!!
Thoroughly enjoyed the video and love that you left in your falls. Makes you relatable.
We all fall down, why edit that out? I learned from other bikers (who’ve had their ups and downs) and that’s how we get better and safer. Learn from each other even the bad, make it a good.
The keisatsu - police looks very friendly.. ❤
A very kind and professional police officer. We instinctively were worried when we saw him pull up, but he was just here to help.
@@onlyinjapan So glad all turned out well. Safe travels.
Lovely!
Occupation efforts in Hokkaido.)
I was most appreciative of Peter's and John's comments to me in their Kickstarter "Shout Out" when John stated, "We weren't able to go and see your contribution to the Ainu National Museum, but we will one day get in there and see it - we'll definitely be back to the area," and Peter added, "And you'll see in the documentary some of the fantastic footage that we got visiting these Ainu villages." What a surprise to have been able to discover a Shitoki in the "documentary" despite their not having been able to enter the museum itself due to COVID (or as the Japanese term it, "Corona") restrictions.
@@dalejay8901 ah, good eyes to see that and thank you for explaining the signifacance. We both really appreciate it Dale! .
@@onlyinjapan Thank you! Dale Walther
Sensational! Interesting seeing both takes of the trip. Was this work? Because it certainly didn't look like it! 😁
Didn't catch all the live streams - Missed that visit to the Toy Museum in Noboribetsu. As something of a toy collector myself, hope you do get another chance to do a full story of that museum in future - That toy collection is downright amazing!
That quirky cabin by the roadside was also something of a highlight. 😎
Long way Hokkaido 😅, thank you for this adventure
with Peter's OV somehow i am watching NHK right now 😂
Thanks - but when you compare it to NHK, somehow the video won't do well on RUclips hahaha but that smooth even voice certainly gives it that pro feeling like a TV show.
Aye this really excites me for you. Ive ridden a bit when i was younger riding in Japan looks fun.
Hi John , this was great. I love it!!! Im curious, did you have to pay much for the "damage" to the bike? Just curious.
I loved it all, not just the scenery, but the food, drone shots and even Peters commentary.
Cheers, Melb Australia
About $200 - it was anything major. broken parts that were easily fixable.
Thanks for your sharing
Great video John. Thanks, it is nice to see Peter , also RIP motorcycle 🤣
I loved this Glad i was one of the first kickstarter supporter! thanks for the share stay awesome!
You were with us from Day 1 at the motorcycle school and then on the ride! Thank you Ramsessilent!!
@@onlyinjapan enjoyed every min.!
Awesome video, I've dreamt of taking a motorcycle tour of Japan for years. I hope John got extra insurance on his bike! 😆
Same, then one day I pulled the trigger and I was on a Hokkaido highway going 80km/hr to a volcanic hot spring town! Haha - nope, I got dinged about $200 but all repairable and nothing major. Haven’t dropped a bike since 🤘
@@onlyinjapan that’s not too bad. I moved my family from Wisconsin to Florida last year and sold my bikes when I did. I really do miss riding.
Nice trip with great company! was worth the wait to watch it! I visited the same brewery in Otaru, so good!
Another great adventure with great food
Japanese Daub is a legend among other western jvloggers. Salute to you mr. Daubutsu
I did this trip on a motorcycle with my buddy 10 years ago. We went to Obihiro. The rain was hard and if felt like needles when you open your face shield. Great video guys
Wow! John got his own license?! Living the dream!
Awesome video, cant wait for the camper road trip.
I really like your ten-day travel on the motorcycles three places I really like on your journey were hell valley, the fireworks and Shakotan Peninsula
haha awesome to see you on a bike john! keep it up! moto road trips are the best!
i will say this again, the narration in your videos are top notch! they really got me through a tough time this year! and "rental 819 (ha-i-ku)" cool name!
Great way to start the week! 🎉
Hi John and Peter, I was only thinking about you two guys the other day and about some of the walks you have done together around Tokyo, and I am thrilled to pieces to see the two of you together on bikes, I'm over the Moon because I'm a biker myself, congratulations John on getting on the bike and we have all fallen over my friend. I would be honoured to ride with you and Peter. The Cop seemed very concerned and helpful Man you two do a great show together, I hope to see you both on more rides, as I say I'm over the Moon 💯🙏❣️ cheers Paul Girkin from Australia
I've always enjoyed your videos and your way of presenting.
Amazing Adventure! Thank you for sharing...
Chitose airport sounds like "Cheetos airport"😂
Hahaha! I thought that same thing my time time flying in there 😂 ✈️
oh my john on a bike reminds me of the one guy on movie wild hogs
Not many know this but, in Japan it is considered
Good Luck to drop your motorcycle 3 times in a short period of time, while standing still!
@@onlyinjapan Just bustin' your chops there...
as a rider of over 40 years, we all still have our
"moments" when it gets away from us, you just have to stay calm and hope for the best, which is what I wish for you!
Wow! That was epic! Beautiful as usual. Haven't been watching the live streams recently because life is now back to "normal".
Glad to hear it, I streamed before the pandemic to bring people with me on the adventures and the channel was a stop to get info on what was happening during *that* time. And some indoor camping ⛺️ 😂 It’s good that it’s back to normal and I can do something like this again!
@@onlyinjapan I remember that indoor camping stream. Gave some sense of normalcy during that time. Thanks!
Should have take the scooter like Honda cub for the first timer haha. Nice trip video looking forward for more.
What happened to the longer one? I was literally about to watch it when you took it down 😢
he's separating it into 2 segments
Me too... Maybe he figured that he could chop it up and make more smaller videos?
Ohhh thats why
@@dachosenone207 GOOD OLD JOHN our treasure!!
It wasn’t an easy decision, still dreading it.
well nice that the police help with your first fall and also by your second fall that the local help with you.
Glad I got to watch the original upload
Part 2 is coming this week, without video and audio glitches 😅 so - did you like it?
Waiting for the next part, thanks guys
Will release this week :) the finale will not disappoint!
@@onlyinjapan awesome :)
John have more mishap in a week than me in a decade hahahaha, but i love he just make fun of it..
Hahaha! Actually just in 12 hours. Smooth riding the next 96 :)
That mountain of Uni omg .
yamaha tracer 900 and a honda 400x, nice!
Sweet rides!
Great job John!
Oh dear John had many mishaps. hope you are fine! pretty awesome video! wanted to explore with motorcycle rental since long time ago. thanks for introduction.
Oh wow! Too much volcano!
Yayyyy can’t wait to watch it
Lol, I just saw the beginning twice because I saw it from what I assume was a mistake upload, now I'm sad I didn't watch the whole thing before the fix. But then this cliffhanger is good enough.👍🏼👍🏼
🤜🏻🤛🏻
Love this!!
@@onlyinjapan good to hear that it wasn't happening anymore. I mean, three times is enough 🤣 Drive save, you have family!👍
What happened with the other video?
Short version: Found mistakes, got feedback, cut it into 2 parts. Second part coming later this week.
Fantastic riding travel adventure. 28:56
cool trip. i was scared the whole video for john, hoping he wouldnt fall off his bike. but he did great.
Only when the bike was stopped did I have trouble in the first 12 hours. The last 96 were paradise!! ٩(^‿^)۶
[ not really... sssshhhh ] lol :D )
- I can't wait for you video!!!
Its so beautiful and cooll
Gee, Wakaki is father of my friend. I did not know this place is run by him. "Sansay Ramen" is my all time favorite in MIwa in Noboribetsu.
I like the intro!!
John I never experienced any of the issues you are talking about In the initial upload
Again thanks to PVG for keeping u safe
Now you did have some math issues and Then there was the parking lot situation and you jinxed the weather situation as well 😂😂😂
Why do John’s beer portions keep getting bigger ?
