Those melons have my mouth watering 🤤 Hokkaido has so many gems that I can’t wait to explore. Thank you for the passion and knowledge you spread throughout your channels John
I just had a melon for $2.99 from my local market. It was very sweet and delicious, I would like to try one of these Yubari King Melons one day. The Japanese people are incredible at creating markets. 👍
I've seen this melon shown or referenced in a lot of anime and manga so I already knew it's expensive but now I know why. It's amazing how much hard work they put into growing the melons and it's also awesome that people there appreciate all that hard work. I wish I could taste some someday but they cost a lot haha. Melonkuma is cute! Maybe head-biting is how they show friendship lol.
John as always never disappoints. U know those Yubari melons are the best of the best when John puts a smile on his face. Thanks for sharing John. Only in Japan is the best. Period!! 👍👍
Wow! I'm not a big melon fan, but you video made my mouth water watching you partake of those juicy fruits! You've added another item to my Japan bucket list!
The one thing that really warmed me is seeing Goto-san's kids getting involved and enjoying themselves. In a country with such a terrible problem with falling birth rates and farm communities dying off, it's good to see that Goto-san has a next generation to continue his good work and keep us supplied with delicious Yubari melons
Man John this one hit different than the last few episodes. The passion for the subject and the quality script took me back to the old episodes on the "Channel That Shall Not Be Named." This episode has it all: drone footage, food beauty shots, info graphics, and that unexpected bit of humor there at the end was a nice punctuation mark. Thanks for your hard work!
Wow, they actually respect the farmers who supply the food for their countrymen! I love my country, but we can take a few lessons on respect and appreciation for farmers!
Cantaloupe is my fave! I hope I can try the King of this melon one day! Going to have to make a point to go to that all you can eat place one day! Alot of work goes into these melons for sure! Awesome story!
Aah .. the appreciations brought tears to my eyes ... From the fruit baron buying the prized melons to treat people to the auction money divided among the farmers ... It's a sweet community ...
Was worth the wait John fantastic!!! 🍈👌🏻 What a price gap between Excellent and outstanding!!!! 😯 I never knew that!!! Was good to hear that ONLY IN JAPAN!!!! AGAIN!!! 👍🏻 P.s was good u also gave praise to the bees too!!! As I love my honey!! 😬
Thanks John, i love behind the scenes videos, the deeper documentary style let’s us see and learn more about things we may never see in person. I find people that criticise likely haven’t tried growing their own produce let alone at this level of quality and dedication.
Got ahold of seeds for these and grew them a year ago. They grow similar to musk melons. Grow especially well on rich compost soil mixture. Add trichoderma mold to the soil to prevent white fungus rot. Prune to 2 to 6 melons per vine, less equals bigger fruit. Harvest just as the fruit starts to have a yellow cast to it for best flavor. The juicy pulp around the seeds makes an awsome yeast or mushroom culture starter. The meat is similar to a very fragrent musk melon with the soft creamy texture of cantalope. ❤
The quality of your videos are unreal. You deserve so many more subscribers. Thank you for being one of my favorite creators since I've found you. Take care of yourself John!
i love the new ( old format) video John, i love this channel but i do prefer this kind of Video, good luck on your future video, i hope you get back all of your subscriber.
Very informative John. Thanks. Japan is a fascinating country I learn every day. The details are very important. That's why I love Japan. i can't wait to taste the ice cream. Yummy. Arigato !! 🙏🙏✌✌
excellent put together video John great edit on the melons and this video had a feel and reminded me of some of the older videos of the past awesome work (you ve really got the touch on those melons and it shows through your work)
So many innuendos so little time. Thanks again John for an amazing video! It is good to see the passion of the farmers and their reward when their product goes to auction.
Very nice episode about the world famous Yubari melons! Definitely something that I would like to try in my lifetime. Good tip about the all you could eat for 2500 yen!
Hey just wanted to say, just loved this video! Keep at it, really love your work. I was very delighted to see this since your channels have been singularly the ones that got me obsessed about Japan!
All I want right now is a cantaloupe lol. You should’ve shown more of the Melonkuma store! I love seeing a taste of the crazy amounts of merchandise that Japanese people create out of a single character.
I wonder if you pruned that smaller ones, would they be tastier? Curious how much of an impact that makes. They grow in cool weather to grow 10 days slower than normal increasing sugar, failed to mention that.
@@onlyinjapan , I will defiantly give that a try next year. We typically just jet all the blooms go to melon. I think next year I'll check the young melons and remove those that don't look as healthy. Then cut them back even further as the melons continue to grow. I'll let you know how it works out.
Amazing video, John. Melon is one of my favourite fruits and your video really enriched my knowledge about it. Thank you for your hard work in making this video. I really appreciate your time, efforts, and dedication. 🙇♀️ Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next video! 👍🤓👍
Although Yubari melon and cantaloupe look alike, the taste and scent of Yubari melons says it all and it's good. I have purchased the Yubari melons for gifts too. Very special. Still love you and PvG eating at the all you can eat place. Melon Kuma John. Thanks for the well made video.
Ah John is breaking out His NHK skills. While you may have been a good teacher, being a video journalist has been your calling. I would love to see you get your own series on NHK or another Japanese Broadcasting Company. Perhaps JNTO will let you Dona series of videos for tourist entering Japan
Wow those look so pretty! I love cantaloupe, when it's ripe and flavorful it can outdo watermelon by a mile. I loved seeing them growing on the vine! One day I want to try these ones, that are so special.
I remember before I became a fan of gourmet balsamic vinegar I wondered why anyone would spend $40-$50 for a small bottle of salad dressing let alone $100 or more. After I sampled my first taste of expensive balsamic vinegar my opinion changed 180 degrees in disbelief at how something that seemed so basic could be so complicated in aroma and taste. So I can understand how a melon could be so expensive especially because of its rarity.
If it weren’t that good, people wouldn’t pay so much for it. This year was particularly good with the weather so good was great! I think people who don’t understand think a melon is a melon. Just like food on a plate is not the same … it can be amazing or lousy. These are AMAZING!
Great episode John !! When We first encountered the Yubari melon , I was like ,this is expensive, But we wanted to try if anyways for the experience! What a life changer ! It tasted like healthy yummy candy!😅
so enjoyed watching. remembered you and Peter sitting at the table eating the never ending melons. knew your strong front teeth would come in handy. thank you John
Another one that never showed up on my RUclips recommendations or feed. I tried unsubbing and *resubscribing* -- I hope that works!!! I love the old OiJ edited format, and miss it quite a bit. Excited to watch this one and see what's next! (Still love the long-form live streams too, though -- especially when it's you and PvG.) Great work!
Also try logging in if the RUclips app and logging back in or even deleting the app and re-installing to clear it out 😂 I’ve been recommended a heap of ideas from RUclips staff over the years. Also, join our Discord server (it’s free) and you can get notifications the moment new ones come out!
So the super high auction price is really a publicity stunt to promote the melon industry. Do they allow similar melons from other countries to be sold in Japan?
Yes, Japan has cheap melons but they’re not popular because they lack flavor. Japanese will pay more for better products, not pay less for more which is more western in thought. Different systems of thought but wow, these are the best Cantelope melons I’ve ever eaten BY FAR! Definitely once in a life necessary experience.
I admire the attention to detail - the farmers make an art of every step in trending the plants and growing the melons.
😋🍈
Those melons have my mouth watering 🤤
Hokkaido has so many gems that I can’t wait to explore. Thank you for the passion and knowledge you spread throughout your channels John

Like very sweet fragernt musk melons.❤
I've seen this melon shown or referenced in a lot of anime and manga so I already knew it's expensive but now I know why. Melonkuma is cute! Maybe head-biting is how they show friendship lol.
I wonder if he has any brothers of sisters?
John as always never disappoints. U know those Yubari melons are the best of the best when John puts a smile on his face. Thanks for sharing John. Only in Japan is the best. Period!! 👍👍
Wow! I'm not a big melon fan, but you video made my mouth water watching you partake of those juicy fruits! You've added another item to my Japan bucket list!
I don’t eat it often either, but wow - after 24 years in Japan, I’m a fan. Will try to return for more melon next season.
Johnさん、いつも日本を紹介してくれてありがとうございます。😃
The one thing that really warmed me is seeing Goto-san's kids getting involved and enjoying themselves. In a country with such a terrible problem with falling birth rates and farm communities dying off, it's good to see that Goto-san has a next generation to continue his good work and keep us supplied with delicious Yubari melons
I think it’s one of the best feelings when your kids are interested in what you do. I wonder if Leo will want to be a youtuber too?
Man John this one hit different than the last few episodes. The passion for the subject and the quality script took me back to the old episodes on the "Channel That Shall Not Be Named."
This episode has it all: drone footage, food beauty shots, info graphics, and that unexpected bit of humor there at the end was a nice punctuation mark. Thanks for your hard work!
Haha, this is an awesome endorsement, Joe!
Cantelope Melon 🍈 that is 😂 it’s sooooo darn good 😋 that all you can eat place … still drooling and looking forward to 2023 melon season!

I was very much looking forward to this documentary and the Melonkuma bit toward the end had me rolling. Thanks for the insight.
Great Video John. Was very happy when I saw that there is a new one 🥳.
Keep up with the great work.
Thanks John, i love behind the scenes videos, the deeper documentary style let’s us see and learn more about things we may never see in person.
I find people that criticise likely haven’t tried growing their own produce let alone at this level of quality and dedication.
Loved this episode John! I literally tasted that melon when you ate it 😋 I see Melonkuma still has a taste for your head!
Got ahold of seeds for these and grew them a year ago. They grow similar to musk melons. Grow especially well on rich compost soil mixture. That Melonkuma is just CRAZY! 🤣🤣 lol

i love the new ( old format) video John, i love this channel but i do prefer this kind of Video, good luck on your future video, i hope you get back all of your subscriber.
You’re handling everything so well
The fact that auctions are going on for melons of that price is insane! I can only imagine how they taste, great video John!
Great story. I think we finally get it why Japanese fruit are fetching such a high price. They pick only the best of the best
Very informative John. Thanks. Japan is a fascinating country I learn every day. The details are very important. That's why I love Japan. i can't wait to taste the ice cream. Yummy. Arigato !! 🙏🙏✌✌
Sugoi! Excellent & extremely informative! The melons are beautiful and so juicy-a true delicacy. Would love to try one day. 😋💞
I really want to Taste how good those Melons are...
excellent put together video John great edit on the melons and this video had a feel and reminded me of some of the older videos of the past awesome work (you ve really got the touch on those melons and it shows through your work)
Such an interesting story and thanks for sharing this with us John! Now for a sweet, big slice of melon with Ice-cream!
Japan has amazing fruit. Biggest apples I've ever seen in my life.
Yes, they’re HUGE 🍎 up in Aomori! And perfect each time. Almost feels worth the price tag 😂
Great content John, so glad you got your own brand back :).
Glad you’re here Jake! Thanks!

Super Impressed with this amazing video..5/5
All I want right now is a cantaloupe lol. You should’ve shown more of the Melonkuma store! I love seeing a taste of the crazy amounts of merchandise that Japanese people create out of a single character.
Did a live stream there on ONLY in JAOAN GO when I filmed the early melons but he wasn’t home 🏠
Love all your videos john! Thanks for the great works
I grow cantaloupe at my home in Tennessee. I have so many at times that we feed the extras to snapping turtles in the creek behind my home.
I wonder if you pruned that smaller ones, would they be tastier? Curious how much of an impact that makes. They grow in cool weather to grow 10 days slower than normal increasing sugar, failed to mention that.

Really great!
Another excellent video! Of course I want to try the melons themselves, but that soft serve ice cream really caught my attention too
This is a wonderful video c:
I dont have a lot of money but i will gladly get one, the cheapest though 😄
I did, $25 at the Hokkaido Store in Yurakucho, Tokyo last month 😋
Amazing video, John. Melon is one of my favourite fruits and your video really enriched my knowledge about it. Thank you for your hard work in making this video. I really appreciate your time, efforts, and dedication. 🙇♀️ Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next video! 👍🤓👍

Great episode John. I love cantaloupe but those prices... wow!🍈😲
Melon kuma definitely looks like he'd fit right in on a Super Sentai (Power Rangers) episode
Wow those look so pretty! I love cantaloupe, when it's ripe and flavorful it can outdo watermelon by a mile. I loved seeing them growing on the vine! One day I want to try these ones, that are so special.
Great video, always big fans of your channel since your prev channel

Hehe... "a pair of melons". Damnit!
They always seem to sell in pairs.
Great episode John !! When We first encountered the Yubari melon , I was like ,this is expensive, But we wanted to try if anyways for the experience! What a life changer ! It tasted like healthy yummy candy!😅
I definitely would try one if I go to Japan. Maybe one of the cheaper ones for 40$. They‘re probably still be the best melon I will ever eat.
The best mascot everRRRGGGG
so enjoyed watching. remembered you and Peter sitting at the table eating the never ending melons. knew your strong front teeth would come in handy. thank you John
Great job!!
Yay melons they are yummy
Anything harvested in Hokkaido is good and tasteful 😋👍🍈
John is basically the reallife-version of James from Pokémon, getting eaten by that bear like he gets by his Victreebell
Saya suka melon yang manis itu.. ...
I dont mind one month per video because this is some quality content. I feel illegal watching things this good for free
Its been so long!

Getting closer - eyes on 1M :)
This is great
so well done , thank you
Quite an interesting story behind it, and it does explain the price of the product.
Okay great, now I just want to go and eat some melons. They just look tooooo good! 🤤
splendid cultivation=3 yubara yubara oh yubari=3 amzing fruit
Melon Kuma returned after 6 years
Great stream as always, John.
Prosciutto and melon would be a great marriage.
Well this wasn’t a stream but I’m very thankful for the encouragement! *\(^o^)/*
Goodness, i'm going to dream Yubari melon and ice cream tonight!
I WILL WRITE IT IN MY BUCKET LIST

What a nice late night members only surprise 🗾🍈👑🍈 thank you John ❤️👍🏽 15:14 oh wow 🤯 after placing the highest bid he will offer them for free⁉️
It seems insane that the melons at auction would sell for so much but hearing the explanation from the buyer and John it makes a lot of sense now.
Fresh fruit
Anyone here planning to go to Japan for this Fall season? They have announced to lift border restrictions
I don't even like melons in the US, but these Yubari ones look so good
