It's a fun thing, but a gimmick. I don't see how people can jusity paying up to hundreds for a fruit that wont taste good and will just rot at some point. Waste of money imo. Just buy a normal watermelon and have something good to eat.
Before watching your video, I would have said no way, but seeing the enormous effort that goes into growing one, has definitely shifted my feelings about it. Perhaps it would make an exceptional gift for that person who seems to have everything.
I was always curious as to how those were grown, had some suspicions, now confirmed. I think the square watermelon is interesting, but I don't know if I'd ever buy one, except for maybe as a gift for someone. I did not know that they weren't exactly edible, but it makes sense, a ripe, or nearly ripe, melon would not make for a good decorative piece. Thanks again for sharing such interesting things like this about a country I so dearly hope to visit some day. =^.^=
I like the subtle touch of using the same clothes in Shibuya as in Shikoku. It's as if you just arrived from the farm and started walking around the city.
I wear this everyday in summer 😂 like Beavis & Butthead. Haha, but yes, I wanted to give that feeling to the viewer and actually, this is the morning after I brought the watermelon back, after the harvest. That means the shop in Shibuya displaying it in the window somehow got it the next day!!! None went out before mine 😳 PS: 3 months later, my square watermelon is doing just fine :) amazing!

Indeed! When I visited Angkor Wat in Cambodia 🇰🇭 I remember seeing how nature truly took over many of the manmade building! Like Indiana Jones! It reminds us all that we’re here today, gone tomorrow, nature will inevitably beat us all. Good to be humbled like that. I bet that watermelon could bust through the box given time!! It was surprising that only 200-400 of the square watermelons are produced each year--their reputation/notoriety seems stronger than those numbers indicate. Well done and informative video, John!
When I first went, it was 200 harvested and they’ve had years with under 100 depending on the weather. 400 is a good year! You’re right, they’re definitely well known! I hope the credit goes to the farmers and city that makes them though. That gets lost in the western media. Hard working people in Zentsuji. They deserve a lot of credit for not giving up on this. I am rooting for them!
I like to think that the father started it from an intrusive thought of putting random fruits in boxes as gags, only to see people wanting an "organic cube" for themselves so much that he rolled with it.

I love this, great spirit! I’m sure so many traditions will need us outsiders coming in to help. A lot of younger Japanese aren’t in tune with traditional culture like their parents. I see more internationals perfecting Japanese arts, culture - it’s so nice and a little odd in a good way that see sometimes. Western Japanese swordsmiths. American Ukiyoe Artists. The artists who made the anime opening to my channel series, they’re American living in Tokyo! And they do TV and cinema with Japanese companies, so great to see so I don’t doubt that you could be farming square watermelons here one day soon!

Not sure if it was intentional, but the closing comment about how Only in Japan ..."will be taking [us] to every single CORNER of this amazing country" was such a fitting finish to a most impressive feature on the four CORNERED watermelon. I loved the focus paid to the challenges of passing the art of growing and marketing square watermelons on to future generations and how those challenges are being met. (I couldn't help but reflect back on the first time, as a child, I saw a watermelon in Alaska. My Uncle had placed one in a moss covered hole at his cabin which kept it cool from the permafrost below. When I saw it as he lifted the layer of moss I thought that was how watermelons grew. Now if he had just made that hole square......)
I can’t believe that no one there has tried to create a recipe for those watermelons. I’m sure with such creative culinary experts in Japan, they could come up some truly delicious dishes be it pickled, compressed, stir fried, etc. That way it would create added value to your purchase. Display and than dine! They also should use the Minecraft connection for their marketing to attract the younger generation. Anyways, another terrific video John! Loved it!
Interesting, like a square watermelon curry 🍛 the flavor isn’t any different with normal unripe watermelons 🍉 so it’s hard to do it with flavor, but square watermelon bakery cubes with watermelon cream or something like that would be fascinating! I think the shape is the winner, not the taste 🤢

I agree - there could be a use including gimmicky Square Watermelon curry or something … so many ideas! But the “fertilizer” does help just kind of a “too bad” moment. You’re right, but I think it’s also part of Japan to get it right, perfect - a reputation of flawless work :) something I love about Japan (most of the time).
Definitely a cool novelty but if it doesn't taste that good I can't imagine it's worth the price even after the wait. Does the knocking trick work with them to determine ripeness?
I follow your channel for over 10 years (I think), almost since I visited Japan for the first time. There are many channels here about Japan but I like yours because you always give an interesting view point about Japan. I remember the episode about those lovely strange watermelons. I also remember you tried to eat one and it wasn't that good. Since the watermelons are harvested unripe, it there a way to make them ripe and eat them? Looks like a bit of a waste not to eat such supreme quality fruit.
First, THANK YOU for finding my new channel here and watching my content for so long. It means a lot to me. At the 6:00 mark in the video, Yamashita-san explains why, ripe watermelons have high sugar content, it decays the watermelon very quickly once cut and harvested.any will go bad before being sold so stores have to sell them so fast. However, perhaps with online orders, they can be sent directly to customers? There are a lot of things they can do to do this better for the future and this year, 2024 - it’s a big pivotal year for them as the move from one generation to another with a more thinking on that future. Square Watermelons were really in danger of going extinct. It’s not a big money maker for farmers. It’s more for passion and local pride, local identity. I’ll go back next year if I can because they’re my friends and I’m rooting for them and will help as much as I can.

My father used to tell me that when he was a child/teenager, his father sometimes in the summer would buy 4-5-6 watermelons and keep them under the bed for a couple of weeks until they ate them all :-) In my family we sometimes eat watermelon with Greek cheese (very salty). The flavor combination is wonderful.
I wonder if they made them a little bit bigger if they would ripen up because I know they’re or ornamental. But also, I think it would be fun to eat a square watermelon. Maybe the new generations can invent a bigger box. 🍉
Maybe there’s a market for it now that wasn’t there 40-50 years ago. Still, what he said about the time to get it to the store, if it doesn’t sell, it goes bad fast.
I remember first seeing and hearing about square watermelons from a science journal we were given at school (the print quality wasn't that great though so the photo wasn't the best) and I thought it was pretty cool. It's fun to see how the watermelon gets it's shape in this video although not gonna lie, I was kind of disappointed to know after all these years that they're not made for eating lol. I love eating watermelons so I thought it'd be enjoyable to eat them with that shape but I do get why they can't be ripened and all. I wonder though if there's any recipe out there that could use a bitter, unripe watermelon haha. It was mentioned in the video that you've covered this story before and I'm guessing the video is on the old channel. I'm gonna have to watch it later cause I don't think I've seen it yet.
What are the profit margins like for this? I can't image the farmers themselves making that much considering all the labour and people involved. But they still continue the tradition, which I like. I wanna buy one of these when I visit to support them. I wonder if they ever keep a few ripe ones to try out.
They produce 200-400 square watermelons a year depending on weather and other circumstances, 80 one year when it was bad. It’s not a bit market, the retail for ¥12,000 each in 2024. I don’t think they’re charging enough for it 😂 esp with the number of failures, I can’t imagine they do this just for profit.
Very nice video and production as usual. I don't get to see the livestreams very often but I always make it a point to see the main channel videos. I vaguely remember a livestream when the watermelon was cut up. Is that how long it takes to make a main channel video?
we have square foods grown as well here bc one can stack up to 4x more than just leaving it to grow in open. means more money if one can grow a ton more in same space. money 101

It was surprising that only 200-400 of the square watermelons are produced each year--their reputation/notoriety seems stronger than those numbers indicate. Well done and informative video, John!
When I first went, it was 200 harvested and they’ve had years with under 100 depending on the weather. 400 is a good year! You’re right, they’re definitely well known! I hope the credit goes to the farmers and city that makes them though. That gets lost in the western media. Hard working people in Zentsuji. They deserve a lot of credit for not giving up on this. I am rooting for them!

I love this, great spirit! I’m sure so many traditions will need us outsiders coming in to help. A lot of younger Japanese aren’t in tune with traditional culture like their parents. I see more internationals perfecting Japanese arts, culture - it’s so nice and a little odd in a good way that see sometimes. Western Japanese swordsmiths. American Ukiyoe Artists. The artists who made the anime opening to my channel series, they’re American living in Tokyo! And they do TV and cinema with Japanese companies, so great to see so I don’t doubt that you could be farming square watermelons here one day soon!

Not sure if it was intentional, but the closing comment about how Only in Japan ..."will be taking [us] to every single CORNER of this amazing country" was such a fitting finish to a most impressive feature on the four CORNERED watermelon. I loved the focus paid to the challenges of passing the art of growing and marketing square watermelons on to future generations and how those challenges are being met. (I couldn't help but reflect back on the first time, as a child, I saw a watermelon in Alaska. My Uncle had placed one in a moss covered hole at his cabin which kept it cool from the permafrost below. When I saw it as he lifted the layer of moss I thought that was how watermelons grew. Now if he had just made that hole square......)
I can’t believe that no one there has tried to create a recipe for those watermelons. I’m sure with such creative culinary experts in Japan, they could come up some truly delicious dishes be it pickled, compressed, stir fried, etc. That way it would create added value to your purchase. Display and than dine! They also should use the Minecraft connection for their marketing to attract the younger generation. Anyways, another terrific video John! Loved it!
Interesting, like a square watermelon curry 🍛 the flavor isn’t any different with normal unripe watermelons 🍉 so it’s hard to do it with flavor, but square watermelon bakery cubes with watermelon cream or something like that would be fascinating! I think the shape is the winner, not the taste 🤢

I agree - there could be a use including gimmicky Square Watermelon curry or something … so many ideas! But the “fertilizer” does help just kind of a “too bad” moment. You’re right, but I think it’s also part of Japan to get it right, perfect - a reputation of flawless work :) something I love about Japan (most of the time).

I follow your channel for over 10 years (I think), almost since I visited Japan for the first time. There are many channels here about Japan but I like yours because you always give an interesting view point about Japan.
I remember the episode about those lovely strange watermelons. I also remember you tried to eat one and it wasn't that good. Since the watermelons are harvested unripe, it there a way to make them ripe and eat them? Looks like a bit of a waste not to eat such supreme quality fruit.
First, THANK YOU for finding my new channel here and watching my content for so long. It means a lot to me. At the 6:00 mark in the video, Yamashita-san explains why, ripe watermelons have high sugar content, it decays the watermelon very quickly once cut and harvested.any will go bad before being sold so stores have to sell them so fast. However, perhaps with online orders, they can be sent directly to customers? There are a lot of things they can do to do this better for the future and this year, 2024 - it’s a big pivotal year for them as the move from one generation to another with a more thinking on that future. Square Watermelons were really in danger of going extinct. It’s not a big money maker for farmers. It’s more for passion and local pride, local identity. I’ll go back next year if I can because they’re my friends and I’m rooting for them and will help as much as I can.

My father used to tell me that when he was a child/teenager, his father sometimes in the summer would buy 4-5-6 watermelons and keep them under the bed for a couple of weeks until they ate them all :-) In my family we sometimes eat watermelon with Greek cheese (very salty). The flavor combination is wonderful.
I wonder if they made them a little bit bigger if they would ripen up because I know they’re or ornamental. But also, I think it would be fun to eat a square watermelon. Maybe the new generations can invent a bigger box. 🍉
Maybe there’s a market for it now that wasn’t there 40-50 years ago. Still, what he said about the time to get it to the store, if it doesn’t sell, it goes bad fast.
I remember first seeing and hearing about square watermelons from a science journal we were given at school (the print quality wasn't that great though so the photo wasn't the best) and I thought it was pretty cool. It's fun to see how the watermelon gets it's shape in this video although not gonna lie, I was kind of disappointed to know after all these years that they're not made for eating lol. I love eating watermelons so I thought it'd be enjoyable to eat them with that shape but I do get why they can't be ripened and all. I wonder though if there's any recipe out there that could use a bitter, unripe watermelon haha.

What are the profit margins like for this? I can't image the farmers themselves making that much considering all the labour and people involved. But they still continue the tradition, which I like. I wanna buy one of these when I visit to support them. I wonder if they ever keep a few ripe ones to try out.
They produce 200-400 square watermelons a year depending on weather and other circumstances, 80 one year when it was bad. It’s not a bit market, the retail for ¥12,000 each in 2024. I don’t think they’re charging enough for it 😂 esp with the number of failures, I can’t imagine they do this just for profit.
