So cool this video John! Watching with my wife and she told me a funny story about people chocking with mochi, she worked in a rest home long time ago around Niigata, so they needed to be very careful giving mochi to the elderly people, one time one old guy was choking to death and nurse very strong trying to save him (arms crossed around his stomach and pushing hard), didn't work... luckily cleaner was passing by with a vacuum!!! she grabbed the vacuum and inserted in the guy's troath and sucked the remaining mochi saving his life!!!
Deadly mochi foiled by a vacuum cleaner! Niigata has some of the best rice and mochi too! Yes, the new year ozoni soup is such a danger if big chunks are in there and if the soup cools, the mochi gets just a little firmer! It's like swallowing a bath plug if you don't chew! ... better taste but just as deadly. Thank you for sharing the story!
Hate to break it to you but she may have been messing with you...There's a infamous scene in a very famous Japanese movie called "Tampopo" where a character in restaurant starts choking on mochi, and they save him with a vacuum. It's an amazing movie that HIGHLY recommend. Also, I very highly doubt that a vacuum has anywhere near the suction power to actually remove something stuck in someone's throat, even shop-vacs have don't have the much power.
Watch out for the laser beams! LOL Sorry to keep you waiting before eating at times - haha! You're a very good friend to lend us the time to make this and greatly appreciative of it - it turned out well and was a lot of fun! Let's do it again, anytime!
My two favorite Japan channel flavors, tasting better together! Your fun videos kept me sane during lockdown. Glad you guys did this combo video. And way to rock that beard!
I agree. I cant make myself watch or continue watching the old channel with the new host and format. I particularly miss the intro and sound effects of his older videos.
Thanks for watching this Eating Spree in Asakusa! So QUESTION: What was your favorite street food from this episode? Let me know in the comments below and Don't forget to subscribe to this new main ONLY in JAPAN channel! New adventure coming really soon! PS: The ONLY in JAPAN Fireworks Kickstarter is still going on - last week to support and get in on event! Live streaming it from Nagano on Nov 3rd! -John
I enjoyed watching this episode, John. You are on a different level in creating NHK-ish type of episodes. To be honest, I prefer watching these recorded videos, rather than the Livestream. A big fan here from the Philippines.
2:03 whoa dekai! 😂 That and the 🦸👀 stare. Yes the comical touch is a must when your guest is 🧔🏄6️⃣ I wonder if off screen Eric gave each food his usual Nom Nom scale to you JD. 8:44 wow 😱 shocking 🍡 fact! 22:46 The cheek thermometer 🌡️ really gave the Taiyaki a truly medieval touch. Another well crafted entertaining video. A first OIJ video with EricSurf6 is probably a landmark video 🥰👍🏽
Eric is super kind and fun to work with - my style is much slower than his - I really appreciated his patience. A true landmark for the OIJ series to have on one of the first and greatest Japan RUclipsrs going back to 2006, the year when RUclips started! Much respect for Ericsurf6 and hope to catch up with him again soon.
John me and my sister have always watched your videos when we were 6 and loved them ever since. We're big fans of yours and always watch your video when we want to learn more about Japan! Keep it up and keep us informed about Japan!
This episode was so much fun! Love seeing you guys together anyway, but the bit of comedic banter along with the creative edits really elevate this one - great job!
I really appreciate the professional sort-of documentary-ish vibe of all his videos but what makes me subscribe and keep watching for the longest time is the creativity and randomness the videos have, emanating from the creator's ability, expertise and personality. And every video keeps getting better. i noticed the sort of hyperlapse that he said he was experimenting on. Very cool!! He makes all his videos light and fun (and informative) to watch even if it is documentary-ish. The cats, the crows, the space boat and the ducks, i love them. I just really enjoy this creator's craft. And ericsurf is really awesome to watch here too! One of the legends of Japan YT too!!
That was quite the street feast! 😋 Eric at 8:37 "You talk too much" LOL 🤣John, you won't be winning any eating contests against Eric! Although you don't want to eat mochi too fast as you pointed out. Well shot and paced and looked fantastic! 👍🍢🍡
Best 25 minutes of today! I love this episode. I mean with eric as the guest star, and John's General Zod super eyes & mickey mouse sound, the A1 bokeh, and many foods..It's all there!💪🏻🏯🇯🇵
Everytime I watch your videos John it does make me appreciate not only Japan but life itself. :) For some reason when there is food involved in a video it makes me feel thankful that I am alive in this age. :)
Bravo John!! Your hard work shines in this episode. Hope you get more views & subscribers. You can sense when other youtubers are mailing it in with click bait, you provide substance. You make Asakusa proud, good job Ambassador!
2:07 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Just finished watching The Office for the second time :D Great video as always John! Can't wait to go to Japan and try all those!
Kagetsudo is a tradition on any trips I make to Japan. Been there the last 3 times I've visited, just as they open in the mornings. Absolutely beautiful
Such an awesome episode. I don't know how I missed it. U and ericsurf6 are favorite food reviewers in Japan. I forgot how big Eric's beard used to be. Great video.
@@3goodtimes3 it was during the pandemic, we found a way to make it work and have fun! No tourists here, so quiet - historic wide in a way. Won’t find it like that ever again.
Eric really lovin' that sweet potato ice cream. ☺ Neat creative editing on the nikkuman segment with Eric casually eating and you speaking at hyperspeed. 😂
Thanks! The kids were off so I had to play around to distract viewers from the lousy sound there 😂 but yeah, I kept talking and Eric just enjoyed and was done! Hahaha! It was a highlight to edit that, make it more fun.
You're looking good John! Love the new animated intro. I highly recommend staying in Asakusa. And don't forget to explore every alley they have the best taiyaki and daifuku along Nakamise St. And ohhh yeah Nikuman is definitely a must try steamed bun. Thank you for sharing. Brings back great travel and street food experience.
Glad to share the adventure with you in this video - definitely recommend Asakusa as the hub for a Tokyo visit to all international visitors! For the jet lagged, much more fun walking traditional streets than the dirty ones of Shibuya and Shinjuku.
I used to walk around Asakusa with friends way back 1990-1997. There are a lot of street food that was really taste good with rice wine during winter days.❤️❤️❤️...Natsukashiii❤️
Thanks for another great video John! You make dreary city life bareable and you keep us sane while we're stuck inside for lockdown. Your videos are so wholesome and earnest it makes world seem a more beautiful place through your lens.
Haha, I loved that moment at 15:13. You were just doing a little joyful dance XD. This was one of those videos where I wish it kept going. Only so much room in the stomach I guess ^^
Yes, 25 minutes - I could have gone 30 but I think it needed to be chopped down a bit. I'll see about more long formats. Adding different angles, background info on the food is important to me - there is still so much I don't know and want to know about Japan and its cuisine!
God this is making me miss this place so much. When we visited in September 2015, Asakusa felt like a home away from home. From the food vendors, to the Tokyo Skytree greeting us every morning we walked outside and to the amazing temple. I still have my fortune I got from there too (It was the best luck too!). I can't wait to visit here again soon
Always a pleasure to see your videos and experience Japan through your eyes John!!! always fun, educational and when it comes to food...mouth watering!
The BEST Asakusa street food video. Clear info like shop name, prices, taste test, time stamps, etc. Fried chicken cartilage??? Omg, i need some of that!! 🤤🤤🤤
Nankotsu is really good - I think it took me 1-2 years before I tried it. No internet in 1998 so I had to build up courage to try new things. I wish I'd had had it earlier!
Awesome video John. One of your best yet. The humor and editing are masterful. Highly enjoy your work these days. Your livestreams are as amazing if not more than your videos. Quality all around as you’ve shaped your RUclips identity to your liking drawing the people who enjoy your company. Thank you for sharing your life within the wonderful world we all live in. Be blessed, watching, liking and subscribing. No Tobys allowed!
when I visited Japan we stayed at a hotel near asakusa, so we went there several times!! the menchikatsu and melonpan stands you visited here were my favorites, as well as an oden shop. the lady who ran the shop asked me if I had oden before, and I said yes at 7/11. she was mortified and gave me some free daikon and told me to eat at her shop instead of 7/11 from now on 😆. I wish I could go back!

I have to go with that fried chicken - spice sounded very interesting
Chicken with different layers.
