- Living in the city has its perks, but having a home with a big backyard isn’t one of them. Horticultural landscape technician Joshua Hollander proves that a lack of square-footage doesn’t mean a lack of potential. Get backyard landscaping ideas and learn how he transforms a small backyard into an elegant outdoor space perfect for summer entertaining.
Over two summers, Joshua made a variety of savvy changes to the urban area. He divided the space into different zones, including a backyard patio, intimate seating area, lounge section and surrounding gardens. Tall trees and a custom cedar screen add privacy, while low-maintenance plants offer easy elegance. Other decorative features include boxwood hedge and ornamental grass. Soft lighting adds a glow after-dark, making the backyard ideal for entertaining after sundown.
This guys knows how to utilize not only the space but the time given to make this very informative video. He explained everything to detail, Including the name of the plants.
I just love watching garden make overs. Especially now that it's summer. We want to sit outside more.... xxx
I love this landscaper, his explanations for everything he did was so informative - so many ideas to be inspired by!
Perfect size, layout and amount of "grass". So many people here in the south have a beautiful field of grass they don't use just to look nice and maintain. This is a smart, practical design. Well done!
This man is an artist! Stunning and sophisticated. So elegant!
The lower garden area is gorgeous. When the hydrangeas are in bloom it will come alive and be so beautiful. I love the elements in this space. Details galore.
Great job! Lighting is phenomenal! Could have some wonderful parties there.
Amazing outdoor lighting. This is one of my favorite outdoor areas!
Its Beautiful and low maintenance is a WIN WIN!!!
It's so beautiful at night. It really comes out
That's a beautiful backyard. Not versed in plants myself, though I like the ivy and small patch of grass, it's the semi privacy and coziness that really gets me. Thanks for posting.
The landscaper is terrific. He has a great "eye" and I always appreciate symmetry so this was perfect for me. The only exception was the artificial grass which I want no part of but I am sure there are other
"real" options that would work.
Excellent job so very well done!
Thank you ✨👏✨👏✨👏✨👏
Stunning! The night lighting is beautiful. So many people ignore this.
I like it, especially the Boxwood, Hornbeam trees & lighting. Wonderful Garden Design!
It’s beautiful love everything about it 😍
Providing the explanation to why did we use this material, plant, orientation is very helpful. Nice video.
I really enjoy the lighting, looks much better at night.
the lighting is very inviting
@Joshua Hollander, you should start your own landscaping RUclips channel. Your work is phenomenal.
Looks lovely. I love the boxwood squares with tree in center, very nice.

Wow,absolutely stunning!
I gotta admit, this is really nice. Great use of every inch for a small backyard space
The lighting on the trees is beautiful
He had me at "low maintenance" ! Right now in an apartment but hopefully we will buy a small place like this some day. 🙂
Did you buy it?
Loooove the atmosphere those lights create!! HELLO ROMANCE! ;)
i love it. Simple garden yet so elegant
WOW! Beautiful job!
Beautifully landscaped small garden. Very well planned and thought out. If I lived in that area I wouldn’t hesitate to contract this landscaper and I know a lot about gardening and am very fussy. Well done!
Beautiful! Very elegant but also casual at the same time.
Great work. Very elegant and clean. Looks like a very secluded and peaceful place to relax and get away from the world
I like the formal look and the lights.
I'd pay for that outcome. Excellent job
They did a great job with the space they had to work with.
This is a great design. I will use the same grass for my yard. I love the grass that's used.
Nice. It looks even much better at night👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Lovely design and choice of plants. Most if not all could be done by a homeowner. The quick couple idea for watering seems ideal for this small space. Great video.
This is beautiful! Great job. How much would a project like this, with similar design approximately cost?
It’s really nice but I wouldn’t use ivy, especially English ivy. Will rot the wood and take over the garden including trying to climb and in some cases damage your trees and shrubs
Thought exactly the same, who in their right mind would deliberately add Ivy. It was the only thing which gladdened me about leaving my last home.
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
This turned out to be spectacular!
Beautiful!!!!!! Very very practical
Gut & replace...how creative
Just fantastic and I love how you used common plants and materials. I'm inspired to fix a part of my backyard I'm stuck on. Going to watch this over and over again until I get what to do. I would hire you in a instant, good context and not selling video. Thanks!

Beautifully done! I love it!
Nice elegant job. But I always like to consider the weatherproof strategies like when you have hot sunny days, or at very cold icy days. I hope you could eleborate on these elements how do you overcome them.

I watch someones videos. Now I see where she found her idea! This does look nice!
Beautiful!!
ivy is a very invasive weed where I live in N. Calif. It climbs trees and then topples them, Additionally it harbors rats and mosquitos. We spend hours pulling it out. I hope it is not a problem for you.
it's Boston ivy. very different from invasive English ivy.
Thanks for the tip on the Ivy, I was not aware of Boston Ivy.
