Although I'm not always comfortable on barstools (I think they are built with tall people in mind), I do think the ideas of putting the bar on the back of the table height seating and the standing bar tables around columns were great space utilizing ideas. Love those pivoting stools on that railing bar too. Last example with the sunken area using a slope was so cozy looking and cool.

Great video with lots of creative ideas. I just renovated my backyard and I can happily report that I have many of these features checked off the list. But I am excited to figure out a focal point for a piece of art behind a bench which is against the horizontal pressure treated lumber fencing. I am looking for an art piece that includes a mosaic type design using colourful porcelain or old pottery pieces framed out into a rectangle that could be mounted to the wall above the bench. Thanks for all the other ideas as well. Loved the small bar area ideas.

This was a well made video that offered so many great ideas and options.
Some of my favorites were adding a bar, adding water features like the vases or water coming out of stone.
I also loved adding an element of fire. it is a huge draw to the backyard. Beautifully done video!

Idea for you: Landscaping for retired persons.
Raised garden beds, no tripping hazards, entire backyard is one level, cement paths instead of stepping stones. Seating that is easy to get out of, chairs have arm rests to help push themselves out of a sitting position etc. low maintenance like drip irrigation, perennials.

I liked the living wall, and a couple of the water features, also the jasmine in the frames, unusual and I am going to do it in the side of my house by the porch. Loved that idea. I can't actually have fire or water features unless very small, but love the sunken water feature at the end with the pink, purple lights. Very nice.

I'm just in the middle of designing a patio kitchen/bar for a client, so this was timely and inspiring. Great ideas. I think the privacy is a key element. In urban settings, privacy is the one thing we lack. Any time I can design to add more privacy, that's always good. All the other stuff is great, but without privacy, who wants to be out there? Just my thoughts.

I agree! I appreciate that some of the images were actual small yards, but most were not. I have a truly small yard and was looking for some ideas. If you get creative with sourcing materials (like Craigslist and your local Restore here in the US), some ideas won’t be crazy expensive. I do like his idea of getting a designer. You can get plans made up and then slowly do the work yourself over time if you are handy.

Hi All! Let's see - In many of our videos there are elements you could grab for smaller space yards. Take the property here: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/peterson-property/ - they put a dry creek bed in, then added a small bubbler feature as the water element, a trellis over some boulder steps near raised garden beds. They used their existing under-deck as a cover and added décor pieces.
In this next property: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/modern-home-landscaping/ like Vonnie G stated, you could create a concrete firepit with a pergola cover and complete it in stages.
Like more of a garden look? paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/minimalist-garden/ - These features are doable in small spaces - the fireplace wall may not be in some peoples' price range but the other elements would work well.
In this backyard we stuffed quite a bit in while creating small destination spots along the long bench. It's actually super cool and the view bar & stairs is a favorite. www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/
In the 10 secrets video - choose your favorite:
#1) DESTINATIONS #2) Covered structure #3) Privacy #4) Water features #5) Fire Features
#6 Adding a Bar #7 Garden Spaces 8) Built in seating #9) Focal Feature #10) Sunken Areas
Then decide if you want them in your space. Put them on paper in a design format and decide the size and materials you want. If you need more ideas, they are all over in our portfolio. paradiserestored.com/portfolio/ Some scream expensive to you but each property has elements that can be a created in a smaller/more-cost-effective version.
As to the Bells & Whistles: Décor items go on sale every June. You can grab many things for 40-75% off.
We hope this helps - cozy nook backyards have elements individual to You. Thankyou for watching our channel and your honest viewpoints.

I love all of these ideas. Especially the comment on having the outdoors lure you from the inside view. I currently have a fire pit, 2 covered spaces (and a third in planning stage), multiple seating areas and garden bed. However, things are looking a bit tired, disjointed and I’m trying to stay with a rustic theme. I would like to incorporate a water feature and am looking to use some privacy screening ideas shown here to take the place of a large yucca tree that was recently removed.

Every design shown here are fantastic, I guess depending of need, budget and space available the design takes place. Destination, in my opinion, makes it interesting and frequently used. If I have to choose one feature would be the use of screens for privacy and to add interest. Also, creates different areas and opportunity. Thanks!

    • @BackyardDesignGuy

Good thinking Chelin7023 - you are very astute! Budget, space, and design are so important. And Destinations are more so. Loved these ideas for small spaces. I liked the courtyard because it’s the closest to my situation. I’m buying a small semi-detached house but it’s a new build so the backyard has no fence or trees, just grass and it’s narrow. It’s hard to know where to start when it’s a blank slate or what shrubs/trees/plants to start with to quickly grow some privacy, relatively speaking.

But exactly--a backyard is not a micro patio, is it? These ARE small yards. Micro patios, balconies and terraces are unique in their design challenges, and I hope Paradise Restores considers a video dedicated to it, it's a great idea. For reference I'm a native New Yorker, so I'm used to videos calling 1/4 acre of land a "small space". 🤣

These are all good options but I wanna circle back to the water features. Good examples but most shown were quite expensive depending on the clients. A very easy and inexpensive option would be to create patio ponds or potted ponds. Here you can create pond ecosystems with plants and fish and still retain that white water noise. Patio ponds also look great side by side to other potted plants.

Lots of beautiful work. And great tips. I liked the vines & bamboo. Something I already planned so its nice to see I am going the right way. My slope was quite steep & is now in 4 sections a wall backed raised planting area at the end of the garden, some lawn with space for a future outdoor art room & office. A second planting area to create privacy from a hill path & road which also helps damp out some noise. The a feature patio which I am on with at the moment. Just waiting on drainage. It's going to be the art work. Over the patio I have planned a pergola with hanging chairs upcycling my old dining room chairs. It's a lot of work & seems impossible to find anyone to do jobs so I am tackling it myself. Just hoping I can find someone to put the pergola up. Much as I love woodwork. It's a big job for a 5ft 4 female with ill health. By the time the patio is laid I think I will have had enough. Lol.

Really inspirational ideas. Thanks for providing some unattached cover ideas like at 2:20 in the cover section of this video. So many people want a small covered area but don't want to mess with permitting and the time it takes to get permits as well as the expense of them. It is also perfect for a small backyard like most homes have nowadays.

    American "small spaces" 🤣

    • @BackyardDesignGuy
      @BackyardDesignGuy  3 года назад +32

Hi Josephine - guess you are from another country? We've had many say our small backyards are not small - they are huge. Here are some additional ideas.
In this next property: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/modern-home-landscaping/ lyou could create a concrete firepit with a pergola cover and complete it in stages. It's actually super cool and the view bar & stairs is a favorite. www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/ In the 10 secrets video - choose your favorite: #1) DESTINATIONS #2) Covered structure #3) Privacy #4) Water features #5) Fire Features #6 Adding a Bar #7 Garden Spaces 8) Built in seating #9) Focal Feature #10) Sunken Areas Then decide if you want them in your space. Put them on paper in a design format and decide the size and materials you want. If you need more ideas, they are all over in our portfolio. paradiserestored.com/portfolio/ Some scream expensive to you but each property has elements that can be a created in a smaller/more-cost-effective version. We hope this helps - cozy nook backyards have elements individual to You. Thank you for watching our channel and your honest viewpoint.

My new home has about a three foot downward slope 40 feet from the house where my original plan was to have a 12x16 patio poured and to install my same size two roof metal gazebo. Yes Jessica - you are right - we do add extra flavor to show off the properties . . . and most of the projects look different without the bells & whistles. Years ago, I realized the importance of sight-lines - the draw a landscape could have. Situating destinations in your property from inside to out makes a difference. Thanks RC for your comment too!

Very creative good suggestions on how to think about creating outdoor space. I'm going to take issue, however, with the fire pit idea. Burning yet more fossil fuels is opposite of what we need in our air right now. This year (2021), all summer, we have air-environment-health alerts. Why add to that unnecessarily? But also, my neighbors have a fire pit. They love to sit outside in the evening, when things finally begin to cool off (i.e., I can finally open MY windows to let some cool fresh air in) and their smoke and burning particulate comes right into my home. I have to close all my doors and windows if I don't want to gag and choke from their smoke. It's horrible!! They're drinking margaritas and laughing and having a good time and I'm choking. So please dispense with the fire pit idea. And please - again - think of your neighbors with some consideration.

was it 10 ideas or 10 ads? regardless, accent lighting should definitely be in your top ten.

I like the built-in bench idea, and the Pergola and the concept of a fireplace! Great ideas thank you so much.

Get real, these are not small back yards!
These backyards belong in an upper middle-class neighborhood.
How about actually doing something realistic with a real small backyard?

      Thank you Kathleen.
It's actually super cool and the view bar & stairs is a favorite. www.paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/small-space-landscaping/ In the 10 secrets video - choose your favorite: #1) DESTINATIONS #2) Covered structure #3) Privacy #4) Water features #5) Fire Features #6 Adding a Bar #7 Garden Spaces 8) Built in seating #9) Focal Feature #10) Sunken Areas Then decide if you want them in your space. Put them on paper in a design format and decide the size and materials you want. If you need more ideas, they are all over in our portfolio. paradiserestored.com/portfolio/ Some scream expensive to you but each property has elements that can be a created in a smaller/more-cost-effective version. As to the Bells & Whistles: Décor items go on sale every June. You can grab many things for 40-75% off. We hope this helps - cozy nook backyards have elements individual to You. Thank you for watching our channel and your honest viewpoint.

Your "destination" cost a lot of money!

It doesn't need to... Just do what u can afford. Focus on getting outside with family and friends...that is the main goal

Awesome. So many there that I loved. The bar fence/wall was great. Loved the spa that was level with the deck on one side too.

Thanks, the destination concept, is the missing link for many designs. Focal point to gather and enjoy outdoor spaces!
