Way around the fence rule is plant arborvitae or yews. Code Inspector can't do anything about it. And I should know. I'm employed in Planning and Zoning
So are the lattice panels she said to put on top of the fence allowed? If you can then why can't people build the fence that tall in the first place? Whoever made the fence "rules" are just control freaks.
Im a cancer patient. I started planting and "tending" to my flowers while in treatment, it became therapeutic for me. However, I failed to properly plan what I was planting and failed to plan for privacy. I desperately need privacy in a few spaces and now motivated to plant with some guidance from tour videos thatvare auper helpful! Thank you!
We have a fence in between our neighbour's garden and ours, that we built ourselves. It's basically a bunch of wooden poles with a pole over top for stability. We put up large chicken wire onto the frame. The first summer it was basically completely open, but by now the grape and the wisteria have covered the entire thing. The houses here all have balconies, so you can see into people's yards all the time. Our neighbours have put up a bamboo screen on top of a wooden frame, and we're waiting for the wisteria to get big enough that we can let it grow along wires over the terrace. There was a passionfruit and clematis somewhere as well, but they didn't do well in our garden. Honestly, my approach to gardening is, if it won't do well when I neglect it, it doesn't belong in my garden. Worked well so far, I have many bushes, a geranium bed, a few trees, lots of hostas and ferns. We planted an almond tree in the middle, which needs to fill in a bit and grow a little more, but in a year or two it will block the view into our bedroom too.
After watching this video i did a bunch of research about bamboo and purchased a Fargesia Rufa for my yard. Thank you so much for the super great ideas!
❤ She’s like a breath of fresh air! Practical, attractive to-the-point advice, nicely illustrated and no pointless waffling 😅 I’m so glad her channel popped up on my screen - I’ve subscribed and am sharing.
Great video! My bf planted the yews about three years ago and they are now about 12 feet and block traffic headlights that used to be very annoying. I built a fence between my house and neighbors using wood lattice instead of full fence panels. It’s pretty and I found premade wood frames to edge them with. They are now close to 20 years old and still in great shape! Neighbors laughed when I put it in and said it wouldn’t last. Guess I got the last laugh. 😊
I planted limelight hydrangea and in 3 years I have a hedge I can't see over and is beautiful! I also planted angel trumpet in large whiskey barrels and in one season it was 8 feet tall and just as wide. I do have to bring them into my garage and over winter but it is worth it! Not only are they beautiful but the blooms are gigantic and fill the air with a beautiful fragrance!
I also use carpet outside and have for years. I learned I could do this from a man who owned a carpet company and had nice carpet outside. When I asked about it he said oh that's been there 30 years. Put landscape fabric under it and nothing grows through it. Take an area that has erosion and then put the carpet upside down and put seeds on the back. The seeds will grow roots through it and won't be able to be washed away.
I did that years ago. The carpet smothered out the weeds and grass underneath it. I cut holes where I wanted to plant. I found that cutting an X in the carpet also worked! Once the plant is in the ground, the pieces of carpet would close up to the plant and block out any potential weeds. I used carpet that was being discarded. It was better than cardboard because it lasted for years. The carpet backing had the advantage of being rough and holding the mulch in place. Carpet padding is good also but not as long lasting as carpet.
I agree with many of the other comments about how there’s no unnecessary chitchat to lead you into the conversation about privacy options and all that… I will however expand upon the bamboo theme, because if you get the kind of bamboo that CAN spread, it WILL SPREAD. And it can EASILY grow OVER 6 feet in any direction, including straight down, including growing underneath roadways, and come up under your house, and push up underneath your house and any other structures, destroying them completely!!!! I certainly love most plants, and I think I might even be tempted to plant some sort of miniature bamboo, but only in a container, simply because I have seen firsthand at my mothers home and property how absolutely devastating bamboo can be, and how utterly impossible it is to eradicate!!! I do love the way it looks, and I love the way it is useful, but I absolutely would never ever plant it… AND I’m now a subscriber!! !
I read somewhere they can reach to 20 feet :| Am looking into blocking them. I have land and neighbours on both sides with bamboos as privacy fences. Am currently digging them out and putting a sheet of bamboo resistant material of about 1meter deep. Hoping they won't come creeping back in.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I love everything about it. Your clear to the point presentation. Such helpful tips.Plus you are a great girl. Will use your tips in my Czech garden. Thank you xxx
I LOVE my bamboo. One $30 plant a few years ago has spread all over the beds, blocking out the neighbors' trampolines and ugly sheds. I cut it back when it decides to crop up where I don't want it when it's very young. LOVE IT. Great video!
Oooh, thank you for this! Your previous video got us talking about what we might like to do to increase our privacy in the back yard. So I'm thrilled to hear all these specific ideas for us to look into and discuss. Sharing both online and with my family!
I have used many vines for privacy but the quickest cover I got that is evergreen......and provides beautiful unsual flowers and fruit ....is the granadilla / passion fruit vine. I used it to provide privacy for the swimming pool area. I also agree with you about the bamboo plants ....I love mine!
I will be watching more of these. My field and privacy behind the fence has been replaced by a 5 story gigantic parking garage and raised 5 lane road extension. I believe I will try some of the bamboo in pots for immediate relief. My water resistant sheers are good, but we do get winds.
I am sooooo happy I just came across your utube channel and watched the "fast privacy ideas", it was great as I'm so in need of some separation between my neighbors property, it was meant to be and verified some ideas I've been thinking of to go forth with it while making it beautiful too.Right away you felt like a friend and it could not have been a better time for many reasons, I've just now signed up for your free class your offering re: picking the right plant, and eventually planning on getting signed up for your individual landscape design your also offering, I know there will be a waiting list and time frame involved but as soon as I can jump into that I will. In the mean time I'm going to watch everything you put out there and enjoy your enthusiasm and expert professional advice. Thank you so much❤
Cool ideas, rhanks! An inexpensive fabric is painter's canvas from the hardware store. Often waterproofed on one side, and you can get huge pieces waaaay cheaper than from the fabric store. Just be aware it will shrink if washed.
My daughter love bamboo but I know how overwhelming it can become but putting it in a planter is genius. Wait u til I tell her. I will plant some next spring.thank you
Watching from the UK - thanks for super ideas. I'm in the process of creating a minimalist garden with a minimalist budget - started with potted bamboos in a raised bed. You've prompted me to check out pergolas near the house. Great videos😀
Great video! This is the first of your videos that I've watched and I love your ideas! We have privacy challenges and met the challenges using different things - we used fast-growing Podocarpus bushes to cover outside equipment (our pool pump and heater, A/C unit, generator, etc.) and it made for a beautiful hedge running the length of our house. We used spoke-type fencing on the part of the pool deck that faces a waterway and planted King of Tuscany jasmine bushes to cover the retaining wall and rose bushes to provide privacy when we're in the pool that's nearby. We used curry leaf trees to provide shade and privacy near White Stopper bushes interspersed with Tea Olive bushes to put sight and sound distance from our neighbor and his loud pool pump! Everywhere we look, we feel its private and beautiful! We have a small garden of raised beds and in-ground trees that provides food for us and additional privacy - win/win!
Hi! Some of the plants you have mentioned I have never heard of before. I took a screenshot f your comment so that I can research to learn if they are good in zone 8. It gets extremely hot and dry, or hot and humid. Then, extremely cold in winter for about a week, just long enough to kill roots of some plants. Thank you.
@@lorirode-offI live in south Florida (Fort Lauderdale area), in zone 10. It's AMAZING how many plants are now able to sustain our weather - we even have asparagus plants and yes, we eat them as fast as they grow - at least for the first few weeks of the season! So don't assume that if something hasn't been known to grow in your zone, it still is that way. Our roses are in bloom now - roses, in Florida, who'd have thought it? I guess people in the know would have!
Jerusalem Artichoke makes a dense fast growing tall privacy screen. We are also trying to create natural looking hedgerows with combinations of flowering shrubs such as lilacs and roses, with trees, evergreens and groundcovers. Wild roses grow large and fast and provide both privacy and security. I also try to add low screening to hide unsightly objects or areas of the yard such as utility elements - for these I use hostas, daylilies, grasses and other dense growing plants, sometimes combining them to create more long term coverage. Hostas are slow to start so planting other plants with them that come up faster or are evergreen helps. One thing we learned the hard way was what NOT to hide or what not to plant for screening. A previous owner planted tall pine trees along the drive. That is a sticky mess on cars. And now they have a blight and need to be taken down. They also planted them in such a way that it left a hidden area and we have had cars pull in there and sit in the past. We now very carefully consider what views we don't want blocked along with those we do.
We had an wide open area with no privacy. We had a shed built and between the shed and garage, my hubby built a wood structure. Taking old grapevine cut at my friends farm, i weaved the dead wood in and out of the openings. I planted wisteria and clematis to climb on the old wood! Beautiful results with lots of privacy too! Trying to add a photo?
Thank you for a well-informed video. There are so many ideas! This year I added wooden lattice, using strong zip ties to my ugly chain link fence across the side. I had it spray painted black first. Then I painted the posts and top rail. It looks great. The cost of having it spray painted wasn't cheap, so I switched to black vinyl privacy lattice panels across the back. Although that costs more than wooden lattice, I read that it lasts longer, but now after reading one of your viewers who said hers had lasted 20 years, I'm not so sure that was necessary. Anyway, thank you so much for all the wonderful information.
I LOVE my bamboo! Put in one plant to block the neighbors' trampoline with its ratty fabric that they never repaired. Years later, it has provided privacy all across the back garden. Best $25 I ever spent. When a shoot pops up where I don't want it, a quick cut gets rid of it.
I also love bamboo . It is my sanctuary. It gives privacy, stays green all year long and reminds me of the Hawaiian bamboo forest . I'm making a bamboo deck canopy . Ty for some great ideas 🌴
I think I said this on the last video but I loooove love this series..... I really want a loooot of space from neighbors in the house I'm buying next year but for the sake of my budget I might have to compromise on property size, but these ideas are def making me feel a little better about that!
This is simply one of "the" absolute best videos I have seen. It's jam packed with tons of easily implemented designs and ideas. Quickly presented yet leaving nothing out. I'm so impressed and I have soooo many ideas to choose from. Just in time as I am presently moving in to a new place and have immediate need to make and decision and get it done. Thank you. I'm subscribing and I also see lots of other videos I want to check out. Warmest regards I found a gem of a channel in you 🤟🤙😁
I've been binging all of your videos as I've been at work today in preparation to completely redo my yard from the previous owner not taking care of it for several years and I already have a background in lawn care in landscaping, but I have learned a couple of things more specifically on proper mulch practices that I didn't quite have a handle on yet, but overall you've translated your passion for the entire process into your videos really well and it's just making me more and more excited and it's giving me more and more ideas for what I can do with my yard and my flower beds that I want to create As a side note, I was wondering if you plan on covering cross germination, what plants would be most suitable to cross germinate with something else or what would be feasible if given enough time or maybe just a simple explanation of it
Great ideas. I love bamboo but I knew it was very invasive so I will never plant it, except in containers. Not to be a Negative Nancy, but keep in mind what is privacy for you is also privacy for intruders. I'm a very private person so I want privacy screens everywhere, but I have to remember I don't want a bad guy jumping out at me from behind my own bushes. And the same privacy elements will conceal an intruder from the public eye as well.
@@omarra6781Thx again. I've seen a neighbor that grew giant leaf like cactus, with extremely sharp points, all along their back fence. That's one way to deter burglars 😂
@@SpringNotes Exactly! You prompted me to go in search of videos because I haven't watched any of that topic for a long time. Do it to where you have plants that also provide food, if you can. Planting blackberries or something along the perimeter does both - provides a deterrent And provides food.
I would add some ideas, but you used all of mine. Lol i will say that i use plants in the garden for privacy in key areas of my house as well. I don't want to have to keep all of my blinds shut or curtains closed just to have privacy. I would rather have them open and have a view to my garden and natural light inside my house without having to give up my privacy.
I was looking for a solution for a temporary fence as we're planting wildflower seeds in the front garden and a neighbours dog keeps using said garden as his toilet. Watching this reminded me that I have several bamboo blinds we no longer use. I shall be spraying them with varnish and using them. Thanks for the inspo. Also must get some clumping bamboo for the back garden too. Cheers.
A professional mind at work ❤ . Packed with information , follow up videos, learning tools and individual DIY projects for any project, landscape ideas that fit everyone . Do you educate on plant Zones to prevent plant failures ? Great videos !
I think it would help to group the plants and trees by geographic area and hardiness zone. I'm in the dry prairies way up north. Winter -40C, summer +40C and heavy snow dumps feet high. So if you had a map and broke it up by a few general regions, then provide like 2-3 options for each. I have never seen bamboo in anyones yards here and I think this is why. Appreciate the detail on privacy options 👍
If you have blowing fabric, you can add those tablecloth clips. Sometimes they look like pinecones, and they are very heavy, but you can also run a chain through the bottom of your privacy curtain and so it on each end to keep it in place the weight of the chain keeps your curtains from blowing so bad outside.
I love your channel. I’d love for you to teach me about example: Outdoor dinner: how much space you need. What plants to consider or reject close to the space. Broad zone plants you coud use to make it more private. New ideas for outdoor spaces. Ugly spaces, shady spaces, fire pit spaces, where and when to use benches, garden decor pieces, cute decorations objects/ideas. Im happy to watch/listen/clean my house with you talking! Bravo for your work, i really looove it. I forget: things you could to do when your fence is white? Plant color combinations for different vibes. Ideas to hude ugly neighbor’s see through fence. 😂
Love your frankness, openess and honesty. Some fabulous ideas for me to adapt to my own back garden. Best wishes from the United Kingdom. Have subscribed, great channel, fantastic advice! ❤🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸❤❤❤
We live on 80 acres and cannot see another house. Last yr my husband laid a brick patio & built a pergola. There is no top as of yet. I want to also enclose one side simply because I have Vitiligo and have to stay out of the sun. I'm thinking of lattice, a nice look.
i've implemented several of these they're all totally great! my last instillation utilized everythign found in the clients our yard & from inside their home which we all love at the end of the day for familiarity as well as multi usin sheiz;D
I've just, finally, finished removing bamboo that literally strangled my koi pond and caused cracks in the infrastructure over time. The previous owners planted the stuff around the pond when they built it and it's lethal! Avoid it for sure👍
Hi, just found you and liked your shows. Do you have any suggestions for condo dwellers? I would love some plant ideas for privacy and beauty. I have a West facing front porch and Easy facing 10'x10' wooden deck. Thank you❣️
Thank you, I moved into a new build a year ago so the garden was a blank canvas and overlooked on all sides. I built a pergola and put some trees in. Also, planted fargesia bamboo but all the leaves fell off! 🫣 It's heavy clay soil so I mixed in some compost then later added clay breaker and a fertiliser. The garden is in the UK, south west facing and the area is slightly exposed to the side of the garden but not against a fence or wall as I was using it to divide the garden and create a boundary for a seating area. Any ideas as to what happened and how I can revive it? I don't think it's dead I think it's severe leaf drop!
Do you place the instant privacy option (like a containter tree) closer to you or towards the neighbor if it's a two story neighbor vs my 1 story home? I have a neighbor behind me across the alley, and they have a large camper that's taller than my fence. Just want to block their view but also remove the eyesore.
I can't believe I just found this wonderful series, or let's say it found me because it came up on my feed. I immediately subscribed and went to your information in the drop-down box and signed up. I can't wait to get started. Someone else said they had an eyesore, and that's exactly my situation.
Very interesting and informative… enjoyed this and must rewatch as I found it to be a bit to fast. You have great ideas and suggestions… perhaps consider pausing occasionally to let us have a moment to take it all in!
Great ideas. What can I do for privacy for my patio windows? i want the light from them and enjoy airflow but not the view of my neighbors. ps. I live in an apartment complex.
Glad to have another bamboo lover in the house! 🎉 Like the quote from Spider Man: with great bamboo, comes great responsibility 😂 It's not an invasive species in my area, and I treat it with respect, and plant the right variety (slower growing) in the right place.
I discovered that the grape arbor I had started growing in our fenced front yard, which our dog regularly accessed, turns out grapes are toxic to dogs!
oh wow it never occurred to me to grow bamboo in large pots. I've been trying to figure out what to do in my tropical yard since I know so few tropical shrubs and trees that can take the heat and alternating monsoon and dry seasons. I can totally imagine using bamboo in pots to screen the view of the plunge pool, the terrace and vegetable garden from people walking by while I learn more about local options that can be more permanent.
Have you tried Brazilian Red Cloak? I don't know where you are but I'm in Gambia. We have a long hot dry season and 3-4 month hotter rainy season. Red Cloak grows fast, wide and tall but it's easy to keep under control. It has large leaves and beautiful red flowers, very tropical vibe.
Im so happy 😍I found your channel 💚 I love plants , I also enjoy working in my yard🍃 and doing landscaping and gardening 🌳❣️ I look forward🥀 to catching up on your videos 👍 I can't wait to see what you've got🌱 🥳

I’ve used Jerusalem artichokes too, but they do spread and are hard to get rid of.
Trying to add a photo?
your videos are just brilliant, full of super valuable information. thank you so much.
Great vid, informative, articulate, no fluff.
Holy smokes this is creative! So many ideas & examples. Thank you. ❤
I also love bamboo . It is my sanctuary. It gives privacy, stays green all year long and reminds me of the Hawaiian bamboo forest . I'm making a bamboo deck canopy . Ty for some great ideas 🌴
I agree beans are very good, they grow very fast and very tall.
This is the first time I've found your videos. May I say,AWESOME!!!
THANK YOU so very much, what an enormous amount of ideas 💡 well done 👏
I think I said this on the last video but I loooove love this series..... I really want a loooot of space from neighbors in the house I'm buying next year but for the sake of my budget I might have to compromise on property size, but these ideas are def making me feel a little better about that!
There's always beautiful, inexpensive shower curtains. And honeysuckle vine is perfect for privacy and smells amazing.
There is an area in my backyard where I will put shower curtains. Thanks for the idea.
Warmest regards I found a gem of a channel in you 🤟🤙😁
Awesome presentation! Thorough and fast-paced.
Shade cloth on a pergola is good ... Hang some fabric drapes or bamboo blinds/screens over the top of the shade cloth for even more privacy and shade.
I've been binging all of your videos as I've been at work today in preparation to completely redo my yard from the previous owner not taking care of it for several years and I already have a background in lawn care in landscaping, but I have learned a couple of things more specifically on proper mulch practices that I didn't quite have a handle on yet, but overall you've translated your passion for the entire process into your videos really well and it's just making me more and more excited and it's giving me more and more ideas for what I can do with my yard and my flower beds that I want to create
As a side note, I was wondering if you plan on covering cross germination, what plants would be most suitable to cross germinate with something else or what would be feasible if given enough time or maybe just a simple explanation of it
Great ideas.
That's a good point. Thank you.
@@SpringNotes Look into "tactical landscaping". LOL
Cheers.
I put curtains at my side porch. I love them but I didn’t think to add weight to the bottom. Thanks for all these great ideas❣️
Can you provide some species detail for the bamboo you showed growing in pots? They were an eye opener.
A professional mind at work ❤ .
Packed with information , follow up videos, learning tools and individual DIY projects for any project, landscape ideas that fit everyone .
Do you educate on plant Zones to prevent plant failures ?
Great videos !
Great ideas and good pictures. Love such quality content! Thank you :)
Thank you for your help! Very nicely done, and thank you for speaking quickly!
Love banboo, and it is also a wonderful material for building, windchimes, art, water features and more.
Loved this video for the enthusiasm you have in your voice. I just kno you must be a good story teller. So cute and bubbly I could listen all day
If you have blowing fabric, you can add those tablecloth clips. Sometimes they look like pinecones, and they are very heavy, but you can also run a chain through the bottom of your privacy curtain and so it on each end to keep it in place the weight of the chain keeps your curtains from blowing so bad outside.
I appreciate you so much. Without a ton of money you’re making landscaping so exciting for me. Thank you Thank you👏👏👏
I love your channel. I’d love for you to teach me about example:
Outdoor dinner: how much space you need.
what species of bamboo do you have in your pots and where did you purchase ? Thanks
Thank you. I like your clear voice. And your enthusiasm.
Hello from Redmond WA😊
Good to see your channel!
I love it when I stumble upon someone in the same State as I.
THis was excellent and exactly what I needed to hear re: container bamboo and container grasses.. thanks so much
Thank YOU! So glad I could help!
Just want to block their view but also remove the eyesore.
we live in the mountains, and a well ordered wood stack of aspen rounds between two trees and 5 feet high shields us from the neighbors.
So happy to run into you site. I am a fan. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you for all the ideas and how you presented them so quickly. My ADHD brain really appreciated your presentation. :)
I have clumping bamboo in my garden and I love it.
Glad to have another bamboo lover in the house! 🎉 Like the quote from Spider Man: with great bamboo, comes great responsibility 😂 It's not an invasive species in my area, and I treat it with respect, and plant the right variety (slower growing) in the right place.
That was very informative, thank you now all I need is a bit of nice weather here in Ireland 🦋🦋🦋
Awesome video, I needed this info. I’m in an HOA neighborhood and need options that don’t break rules.
I discovered that the grape arbor I had started growing in our fenced front yard, which our dog regularly accessed, turns out grapes are toxic to dogs!
you are so knowleadgeable thanks for your tips! im big on privacy... im a new subscriber!
I am so glad I found you.. tku , feeling inspired 🐢🐛🐝
What’s the best size pot to planet a tree in?
This was such a great informational video and I really liked everything I learned watching it 👌🏽
oh wow it never occurred to me to grow bamboo in large pots.
Or,go get bamboo from someone with too much and attach it together as a fence.
@@cynthiacrawford6147 I tried that but they all died.
@@cucar8363 oh :(
Have you tried Brazilian Red Cloak? I don't know where you are but I'm in Gambia. We have a long hot dry season and 3-4 month hotter rainy season. Red Cloak grows fast, wide and tall but it's easy to keep under control. It has large leaves and beautiful red flowers, very tropical vibe.
Thank you so much for all the fantastic information….well presented, many options. Appreciate it. 🌱🌞
I Love Bamboo ! I can't wait to get into my own place,to plant it!
Shower curtains work perfectly
God bless you, lady!
Yes plant bamboo. Just be responsible with it. I love your videos! So easy.
Im so happy 😍I found your channel 💚
I love plants , I also enjoy working in my yard🍃 and doing landscaping and gardening 🌳❣️
I look forward🥀 to catching up on your videos 👍
I can't wait to see what you've got🌱 🥳
Thank you! I love how you show pictures & talk fast! You pack a lot of ideas into a short video!
Awesome. I love Bellingham, WA! My grandchildren are there!
Love this video.
Thank you!
Wonderful advice! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and knowledge with others!!😀👏🏼
Thank you for the wealth of info. Great job. Very informative and interesting.
Need ideas for balcony aka lanai in several story condos.
Hi I would like to know what type of bamboo did you pot for portable privacy clump or running? Thank you I enjoyed your video. 💜🌿🪴
