Here we go - Fourth of Eight in our DIY Backyard Design Series. How to create the perfect backyard this summer and this part is all about creating a space that is easy to flow through.
Ease of movement or flow through the space is very important to think about right now before you begin your working in your Landscape. I cannot tell you how many times I have come into a backyard space that was done by a homeowner and they had everything in one area. There is hardly any room to move at all.
The trick is creating flow from one destination to another destination. Create a reason to go outside then create a reason to flow though the space. You could create flow from the Outdoor Kitchen over to the Outdoor firepit. Or from the firepit over to the Outdoor Basketball Court.
When you are creating this flow remember to leave room to walk between the Outdoor Furniture. You will see a lot of examples of ease of movement or ease of flow though the Outdoor Living Space in this video.

I love the house with the front reflection pond. When I saw the before photo I didn’t like the house at all! That pond really made it stand out.❤
One of my favorite things about well-designed gardens is the sense of discovery or exploration you get. If you can see everything right away, it's not interesting. If the flow leads you to discover more, I think that's the most interesting type of garden. Great video and I agree, the last one is super cool.

Hi, amazing work. I am having a couple of covered outdoor patios built in my property in Spain and my builder says that to anchor the support pillars to the tiled floor or cement slab bases that they must go into a purpose built metal bracket, which the pillar would slot into and the metal would come up around 4-5 inches around the base of the pillars. I think this could look unattractive and I notice in your pergolas and other outdoor covered terraces where you use wooden pillar, that they sit directly onto the floor tiles. Can you please explain how you do this, and if they are strong and sturdy and most importantly don't rot from the bottom when there is a lot of rain. Thanks so much for any advice. Cheers from Spain.

I don’t have a back yard I have a corner lot so my yard space is the front of my house and the sides of my house. Do you have any ideas on what I can do in my case?
How do people converse on the patio furniture? The way it is set up no one is facing each other? You would have to turn your head to carry on a conversation....
Remember you always have the ability to move the furniture based on the party. I like keeping my furniture so that you can easily move around in the space. Then when u have a gathering you simply move things around to match the crowd and the needs of the space. I hope that makes sense?

Those are some really well designed back yards. You really know your stuff. Here in Brisbane Australia, landscapers don't do designs. You ask them and just they say "we don't do that". They expect you to hand over thousands of dollars and hope that you understood their verbal explanation and they don't seem to have anywhere near this much creativity. I've been watching your videos and I'm going to have a go at designing my own yard. What software do you use?

Hope you see this comment! In my scenario, I have a medium 2-3000sq ft back yard, it is open to an alley with a two car driveway, and has a huge protected pine tree in the corner which has little tiny cones it throws everywhere. We also have tenants on the ground floor who walk out from the back. Then we have our balcony deck above that, which is covered and probably 15 ft by 24ft. Do you have any tips?
