Just a tip many don’t know for anyone who is abutting two pieces of wood: the half-lap woodworking joint is easy! Easier to search for it to see a picture, but; If you have a 4x4, at each end, cut a chunk halfway (2”) down for just the last 4”. Do the same with the wood it abutted, then just put the two cut ends together. This way, you can nail through both pieces from above, creating a clean connection that won’t shift back and forth.

I foresee A LOT of relaxing family and friends time there. Beautiful job. Your sad plant is a daffodil bulb, I think. It’s doing it’s thing by dying back as spring turns to summer. Plant taller bulbs in the back, shorter bulbs in the front (like crocus) and a few perennials in the middle like more peony (the pink flowering plant already there) and hosta. Thanks for saving the existing peony.

Very helpful video; we're thinking about doing a similar project in our backyard and this gave me a good sense of how to get started, thank you!
From what I could see, the plant that "looks a little sad" is probably a daffodil bulb, which will regrow/rebloom in the spring. If it didn't bloom this year, it probably didn't have enough sunlight; you can always dig it up and plant it somewhere sunnier if you like.

Great as always! Someone else commented as well but the “sad plant” is a daffodil bulb and past its season. Just cut the greens off and it will come up next spring. Also, I have really good luck spreading peat moss over the seed. It keeps it moist after watering, helps germinate, and keeps the birds away. Hey, sometime can you do a quick shout-out to your family so we can meet them? Thanks for all your tips! Christine
