Gardening tip: water the flowers and plants at the roots, not from the top of the leaves down. That'll ensure as much water as possible gets to where it needs to go. :) I usually give the leaves and flowers a little shower for a few sec after I water the roots.
@@Cherokee92 Yess! I stopped raking mine completely and just put new mulch on top and it's made my soil soo much better. Now anytime I dig a hole to plant something, I find earthworms and it makes me so happy haha
My uncle is (literally) a Master Gardener and he explained that fallen leaves are really important in the spring because they house bugs for birds to feed their babies. Without them, a lot of baby birds starve 😭

Don't feel bad about the leaves! USDA actually recommends leaving the leaves: "Leaves create a natural mulch that helps to suppress weeds while fertilizing the soil as it breaks down. The leaves also serve as a habitat for wildlife including lizards, birds, turtles, frogs, and insects that overwinter in the fallen leaves." But i understand, with wanting grass 🙂💚
Also leaf piles are where lightning/fireflies larvae live for two years before they become their final form, always leave some leaf piles somewhere for nature!

Ha! I was just planning to build the same work bench out of pallets. You did such an awesome job. Just one tip for your plants. Make sure they have enough drainage. Some small holes on the side above the cement layer might help if you notice your plants struggling a bit. The sand was a good idea too❤
My boss intentionally doesn't get anyone to rake up the leaves every year, and she has beautiful grass!(and she has a LOT of very old growth trees, her house is almost 200 years old)) I think in many ways it can be great for the soil, kind of like a natural fertilizer!
My first plant that got me really into them was an orchid. I use and love the planta app. Don’t be afraid to skip or snooze a task if it’s too soon. It’s not always 100% but a great reminder to take a look. I like that I can see what the plant looked like when I first entered it till now. I am up to 150 plants and counting 🙈

The “weeds” look like feverfew to me, but hard to tell until they flower. If they ARE feverfew, they will produce a small daisy-like flower. They self-seed very readily but are easy to pull out and control and are a lovely plant as long as you don’t mind keeping them in check. The plant with the purple flowers is Nepeta ‘Walkers Low’ (common name for nepeta is catmint). It’s an amazing plant. And like other commenters have said, the leaves in your garden beds are very important for wildlife. They also make wonderful mulch and if you have a mulch setting on your lawn mower you can just mow over the leaves on your lawn and mulch them right into the lawn. Leaves are full of nutrients that your lawn and plants need. The little potting bench turned out great!
Anna White is amazing, but then, so are you! I am gearing up to put a faux beam cap on our overly traditional mantel, thanks to you, and I completed a linen closet re-do, also thanks to you. Have a wonderful Summer and thank you for presenting projects in a non-intimidating way. P.S. On plants, if you choose natives that birds and pollinators like, you can't go wrong, unless you have a lot of deer, rabbits or woodchucks, as we do... In the winter, I do all of my research on plants, sun, water and soil requirements, then draw up plans for the next season. It brings Spring closer and gets the brain work out of the way.
With regard to the potting bench, the 2 big box stores sell corner braces in a kit to make a potting bench. Yes you also have to purchase and cut lumber (2x4) to size.
Consider adding plants native to your state/county to your garden. They will be really hardy and low maintenance and they will support the most butterflies and birds 🙂
Could drill a drainage hole in the side since the bottom is full of concrete. That would be best to do before filling with dirt/sand though 😅 or just be careful not to overwater
Depending on your climate, the vinca tailing vine will come back next year, and Money wort is another common vine but it can be a ground cover. I am in southwest Ohio and mine come back each year. Great projects!!

Actually, mulching the leaves very finely is good for grass as it will eventually just settle into the grass and feed it naturally. Google says: Mulching leaves back into your lawn will provide a natural source of nutrients that will improve the growth of your lawn. Save time and hassle of raking leaves by simply mulching them into your lawn, improving your lawn's growth and health.

you are probably overwatering your plants. And plants often look like if they need water, but in reality they have too much of it. General rule: little sunlight = little water. And smaler pots.
I have heard that mint is an invasive plant, and putting it in the ground will make it eventually take over your yard. Not sure if that will be the case in your region, but I would definitely keep an eye out for that, and pull it up if it begins to spread! Amazing facelift of the backyard tho, lots of great ideas!! ❤

This yard has sooo much potential and I believe you could take the chance and be more creative and put more colour. I will give you an idea what i mean. You can get old tires, paint them and make flower beds. That fence needs to be loved again and of course you can you your wonderful creativity and your huspands help to fill up this garden with colour and life. What ever you both like of course. First plant was a philodendron no id. Had it for years until hubby recently began the houseplant collecting hobby. Nearly killed my philodendron ( propagating last of live bits) taking advice on line to water on schedule this way or that. I don't believe there's an AP to replace being present to your plant's specific needs that will change with the weather and seasons. Watering is determined by the sunlight, temp. Humidity Soil drainage, pot porousness and airflow. These conditions will vary from each person's location and ability to provide clean chemical free water ( rain / filtered) being present with each plant as needed. Just when you think there's a pattern, conditions change and you will need to modify everything to accommodate your plant. Just like life, there's no one size fits all hack, auto pilot AP, sorry 😐 . Nice job on the backyard build, much easier to get motivated for gardening chores when it looks this good! 😻

Just a tip when you are planting in the ground dig your holes a little bigger... some of those plants are not going to survive as shallow as you planted them!

Did you seal the wood? If not it'll rot out quickly. Also a suggestion....the swings , use the rope from old one attach to new swing
We never ever rake the leaves. We just mow and it cuts them in little pieces. The grass will love it and it will save you so much time.

When I lived in Chicago my garden had lots of native grasses and ground covers that didn't need a lot of water.

Be very careful not to over water the plants in your pots with the poles. They need to dry out between watering to make sure they don’t rot.

You can plant short clover in your lawn, it's hardier to dog urine than grass.
