  • I'm so excited after months of working on this project to be able to share this with you! I added in multiple garden beds throughout the entire property to remove grass and expand on possibilities for plants! Now all that is left to do is plant!

With cardboard.....9,000 man hours.... And 45 tonnes of bark chips!!!
    😳
But it looks lovely and you worked really hard. It makes the whole house look so attractive especially upping the kerb appeal from the street view. The block paving near the front door steps looks very English actually with the flower borders either side, I could almost imagine I was looking at a house from over here where I'm from.
In fact even the view inside the back garden you could be fooled for thinking was English. The shapes of the borders, the chipped bark, even a lot of the plants you chose to add are very typical over here. The reason that stands out is because I watch tons of house and garden makeovers from both here and over there, and this is literally the first American garden out of thousands I've seen, that doesn't look American lol.
In fact the only thing that gives it away is the style of the house. Most of our homes are solid brick and are not raised up off the ground like yours are, so the front steps and back stairs and decking are typically American. Of course we have older houses with cellars and things, but most homes are built directly on the ground so theres rarely steps to get in the main doors. It's a beautiful house in any case, just different.
My favourite area is the patch under the decking steps, with the blue stones, again something else that's popular here. That area is really attractive, and whilst I know they're not cheap, a few more of those stones in other sections would look lovely too. Once the hot tub goes in, that'll make that area beside the wooden steps absolutely perfect! Who doesn't yearn for a hot tub! Your Mum is a woman after my own heart.
In fact the least english thing about that back garden is the earth! 🙄 You worked hard, but my God English soil would've broken your back! We have a lot of thick chunky clay under our earth, particularly in the South East coast area of England where I'm from. You have to dig huge holes when planting large shrubs here, at least 3 times the size of the root ball of the plant, MINIMUM! Otherwise whilst they get established the roots will struggle to penetrate the ground properly and spread out. No point buying decent sized shrubs for them to just die off.
What a lovely and handsome young man you are! What a blessing of a son you are to have, your parents must be so proud of you. You're very kind to do this for your parents, not least because most young adults wouldn't even know what would make their parents happy, let alone get on and actually make it happen!
Don't you dare rush to settle down too soon, you deserve to have your pick of the very best, and not be lumbered too young before you know yourself properly! You obviously come from a wonderful family, that is very loving and caring about each other. Whoever becomes your permanent fixture should earn their right to belong to your family! I'm getting maternal here lol, but you're naturally clearly a very kind and giving boy, which will attract moochers!
Whoever she (or he) is, needs to bring as much to the table and appreciate how lucky they are to have you, and to be included in such a lovely family. Trust me on this ok! Break a few eggs before you whip up an omelette if ya get my drift. Young hormones aren't usually the best judge of character, so trust this middle aged English fart, and know your worth! No doubt your parents tell you the same anyway, but you may just think they're biased, so take it from someone who doesn't know you and has nothing to gain in telling you.
I'm so glad I watched now! I'd watched a couple of doom and gloom "what the hell is happening in this world of ours" kind of woke nonsense videos prior to this that thoroughly depressed me! HAH! Compared to those young adults you shine even more brightly! It's reassuring to see not all of you are completely mental quite frankly! There's something deeply sinister going on with today's young adults.
So this was a very uplifting "English country garden meets American home" breath of fresh air that I needed! Thank you. I wish your Mum many happy hours in her long awaited hot tub, and what a beautiful view she'll have from within it. Lovely! 😘

It all looks beautiful, and will continue to improve as the plants go in and grow. Cardboard is such a great help in gardens, and you can use it anywhere you’re planting, even in the small spaces. The worms love it, and it’s great for controlling weeds. The process just needs to be repeated yearly. Hope you’ll choose pollinator-friendly/native plants! Your mom must love this!!

My HOA likely wouldn’t allow cardboard if they saw it. I would get a notice in the mail for sure. I would have to add the mulch on top of it the same day to avoid being caught.

I landscaped my backyard in a similar manner, but I left the grass in place and just covered it with the cardboard before laying down the wood chip. Once the grass no longer has light it just dies anyhow. I also use old carpet on the ground then lay my artificial grass on top of it. I was eliminating the need for mowing and love the transformation. 👍😊

Yes age does slow a person down and health or injury does too . I like to just Do what I can being injured or sick getting out in my own yard . Perhaps getting someone to just mow the lawn will help for u to enjoy it still . That is what I did bc keeping up to it is what is difficult before it get overgrown or weedy and then is more costly and demanding . Having someone or a company lawn mowing company or calling the high school for regular help will make a difference I found . Or paying company to do it all , trim bushes, edging , treating the lawn and mowing makes a professional difference to budget . Depends how u feel seeing it kept up or not ?

That's a lot of work to have less grass to cut ! Seriously though it is going to look very nice. I do all the yard work since no one in my house has any interest in it other than it not being jungle. I moved back home to care for my parents in their last years and my mom had s lot of things going on in the yard. She didn't believe in pruning ,lol. She planted some things that made it very diifficult. Ivy, the Bain off my existence! Takes over, and catches all the leaves in fall. Especially where shrubs were not pruned and brought up off the ground. I'm making slow progress, but its getting there. I like the work but time consuming. I'm very accident prone too, lol. Always taking tumbles and getting cut up. I love how you are so young ,but taking such an interest in making your yard a beautiful place to look at and relax in. Great work!

And if you tried to pull a weed or grass that got in it, it pulled a yard of that fabric up. I started using strictly carboard like you did here and what a difference. That fabric is useless in a very short amount of time! And cardboard breaks down over time, completely. Good job!

It’s going to look awesome. May I make a suggestion? Please plant native plants. It’s really important for the ecosystem of your area which includes all wildlife like birds and pollinators as well as plants.
