- I'm so excited after months of working on this project to be able to share this with you! I added in multiple garden beds throughout the entire property to remove grass and expand on possibilities for plants! Now all that is left to do is plant!

It's coming along nicely and what a wonderful gift to your parents. 💯
Good job! you're a son every parent wants to have.
When u have 2 working man at all time... Wish granted twice
Lol! 😁🙏♥️
Why remove so much dirt?
Well done young man! Awesome to see young people set out on a project at home! 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
What a creative, thoughtful, hard working son!
With cardboard.....9,000 man hours.... And 45 tonnes of bark chips!!!
😳
But it looks lovely and you worked really hard. It makes the whole house look so attractive especially upping the kerb appeal from the street view. The block paving near the front door steps looks very English actually with the flower borders either side, I could almost imagine I was looking at a house from over here where I'm from.
In fact even the view inside the back garden you could be fooled for thinking was English. The shapes of the borders, the chipped bark, even a lot of the plants you chose to add are very typical over here. The reason that stands out is because I watch tons of house and garden makeovers from both here and over there, and this is literally the first American garden out of thousands I've seen, that doesn't look American lol.
In fact the only thing that gives it away is the style of the house. Most of our homes are solid brick and are not raised up off the ground like yours are, so the front steps and back stairs and decking are typically American. Of course we have older houses with cellars and things, but most homes are built directly on the ground so theres rarely steps to get in the main doors. It's a beautiful house in any case, just different.
My favourite area is the patch under the decking steps, with the blue stones, again something else that's popular here. That area is really attractive, and whilst I know they're not cheap, a few more of those stones in other sections would look lovely too. Once the hot tub goes in, that'll make that area beside the wooden steps absolutely perfect! Who doesn't yearn for a hot tub! Your Mum is a woman after my own heart.
In fact the least english thing about that back garden is the earth! 🙄 You worked hard, but my God English soil would've broken your back! We have a lot of thick chunky clay under our earth, particularly in the South East coast area of England where I'm from. You have to dig huge holes when planting large shrubs here, at least 3 times the size of the root ball of the plant, MINIMUM! Otherwise whilst they get established the roots will struggle to penetrate the ground properly and spread out. No point buying decent sized shrubs for them to just die off.
What a lovely and handsome young man you are! What a blessing of a son you are to have, your parents must be so proud of you. You're very kind to do this for your parents, not least because most young adults wouldn't even know what would make their parents happy, let alone get on and actually make it happen!
Don't you dare rush to settle down too soon, you deserve to have your pick of the very best, and not be lumbered too young before you know yourself properly! You obviously come from a wonderful family, that is very loving and caring about each other. Whoever becomes your permanent fixture should earn their right to belong to your family! I'm getting maternal here lol, but you're naturally clearly a very kind and giving boy, which will attract moochers!
Whoever she (or he) is, needs to bring as much to the table and appreciate how lucky they are to have you, and to be included in such a lovely family. Trust me on this ok! Break a few eggs before you whip up an omelette if ya get my drift. Young hormones aren't usually the best judge of character, so trust this middle aged English fart, and know your worth! No doubt your parents tell you the same anyway, but you may just think they're biased, so take it from someone who doesn't know you and has nothing to gain in telling you.
I'm so glad I watched now! I'd watched a couple of doom and gloom "what the hell is happening in this world of ours" kind of woke nonsense videos prior to this that thoroughly depressed me! HAH! Compared to those young adults you shine even more brightly! It's reassuring to see not all of you are completely mental quite frankly! There's something deeply sinister going on with today's young adults.
So this was a very uplifting "English country garden meets American home" breath of fresh air that I needed! Thank you. I wish your Mum many happy hours in her long awaited hot tub, and what a beautiful view she'll have from within it. Lovely! 😘
Wow, thank you very much for all of those kind words!! I try my best to be a positive influence, and it’s always uplifting to see comments like this ❤️
I can see your vision for this front and back landscape and it's going to be amazing as things start filling in over time. Wow, a hot tub!!! That sounds fantastic! You guys have done an amazing job transforming this space and I can't wait to see it evolve. It sounds like you and your mom have a great summer ahead. Happy Mother's Day to your mom! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, I’m very excited for the hot tub 😉 and I will tell her you said Happy Mother’s Day!
It all looks beautiful, and will continue to improve as the plants go in and grow. Cardboard is such a great help in gardens, and you can use it anywhere you’re planting, even in the small spaces. The worms love it, and it’s great for controlling weeds. The process just needs to be repeated yearly. Hope you’ll choose pollinator-friendly/native plants! Your mom must love this!!
My HOA likely wouldn’t allow cardboard if they saw it. I would get a notice in the mail for sure. I would have to add the mulch on top of it the same day to avoid being caught.
@@inquisitvem6723 Same. I'd love to do this, but just not possible here. Maybe in the back yard if I covered it same day.
@@inquisitvem6723 HOA is a good name for it 😂
Where's your ho a they'll be here in no time
Where did you get all that cardboard from?
God bless you. Have a great 25th Anniversary.
Love the curved beds in the backyard!
I landscaped my backyard in a similar manner, but I left the grass in place and just covered it with the cardboard before laying down the wood chip. Once the grass no longer has light it just dies anyhow. I also use old carpet on the ground then lay my artificial grass on top of it. I was eliminating the need for mowing and love the transformation. 👍😊
yes..really didnt need to remove all that grass first..a lot of work and time wasting
I can visualize a putt-putt/ mini golf course in your yard. It's cute. Very cute.
I need these two in my backyard 😂 one can dream. Love all the work you did and appreciate the ideas♥️♥️
I have an idea...since you're going to put in a hot tub and since you are going to put a bed around it, why don't you install some plants with fragrance. Even some that release their pollen at night, so that there will be fragrance all day!
Great job you gave me a lot of ideas with creating bed and using recyclable cardboard. Keep up the great work thank you. You have a subscriber.
Wow, you have been busy! Love how this defines and cleans up the space. Will look even more amazing once you get it all planted up. Nice job! 😊
Absolutely, it feels good having some sort of vision now for the space. Thank you!
I'm a retired landscape architect/designer and your vision for design is brilliant
I too over many years landscaped my yard with many beds to lessen the grass
I've only seen this video so I don't know if you have a business in landscape design...but you should
I hope you keep a portfolio of all your jobs
Brilliant job
Hard work always pays off. It's looking beautiful. I can imagine what it will look like in full bloom when your done. Awesome job. 😊👍
One of the absolute best backyard transformations I have ever seen. You guys are so inspiring, and so much hard work! Please keep us updated. Best wishes on your garden journey 👍
Love the outline of what is to come! Such a treat to watch the transformation. The yard will surely be inviting … can’t wait to see.
Thanks for the video, I so want to do this, I'm old and have to much grass to mow! Looks great!
Me too. I did this down one fence line years ago but now my back gives me problems and the weeding, and re mulching every year is a big job.
Yes age does slow a person down and health or injury does too . I like to just Do what I can being injured or sick getting out in my own yard . Perhaps getting someone to just mow the lawn will help for u to enjoy it still . That is what I did bc keeping up to it is what is difficult before it get overgrown or weedy and then is more costly and demanding . Having someone or a company lawn mowing company or calling the high school for regular help will make a difference I found . Or paying company to do it all , trim bushes, edging , treating the lawn and mowing makes a professional difference to budget . Depends how u feel seeing it kept up or not ?
Love the layout. It really gives you an interesting backyard. Good job!
Great to see how you are transforming the family home!
Beautiful! Hard work, but such a beautiful accomplishment!
Just found you today. Love what you are doing with a blankish canvas. Looking forward to viewing your channel. I always appreciate the inspiration🙏🏽
I sure hope you’re up to maintaining all of that! I keep making beds. Now I have more to maintain than I have time for.
It’s my pride and joy, so defintiely :)
Holy termite haven batman!
I absolutely love the curved beds!! Ya’ll did a GREAT❤️JOB👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I’m going outside and curve❤️ my plant beds❤️ very creative 👏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
As a landscaper I'd have to say this was excellent work.
Good job! It's going to turn out beautiful in time 👍
This is truly a gift how BEAUTIFUL ❤️♥️!!! You are blessed with a strong VISUAL!!
Cardboard is a great weed block tool. For extra layer of weed block we put landscape fabric over the cardboard layers, then added rocks, and NO weeds! Your yard and flower beds look amazing. Great job!
WOW!! I'm loving it!! Anxious to see the finished product.
Excellent video!
Joshua are the Master Garden Designer!! Your work is absolutely outstanding!! I love your designs and future plans for this project!! I can’t wait to see the finished result!! Your mother must be a very special lady!! You are a ROCKSTAR ⭐️ 🌲🌳🌷🪴
Thanks! Definitely excited for stuff to start filling in this year :)
Nice job! So much hard work
Thank you!! Definitely hard work but well worth it!
Great garden, it will look beautiful as it matures.
Joshua, I like the way you are planning and planting the foundation of the garden and allowing it to develop and mature over time.
I don't think instant gardens fare too well over time.
Love what you're doing 😍
Can't wait to see this after everything blooms
Boy, I’ve never seen two men work so fast in all my life! LOL
Such skill. You make it look easy..
😂 it wasn’t easy but fun to look back in and watch!
The back breaking labor might have also contributed. 😂
Absolutely love the cost effective use of cardboard, this will mulch down over time, stops the horrible black liners tearing and flying around as it ages. We'll done guys, really enjoyed this from the UK x
What beautiful black soil you have. So envious!
Good job! I also have a big yard. I also am trying to eliminate grass! Its quite a work out, but l love being outside and making improvements much like yourself! Thanks for aharing!
I wasn’t sure I agreed with your choices until the very end. I’m doing something similar a 1/4 size of yours with some leading pathways. Good luck! Looking forward to some updates. Looks like a gulf course now. Can’t wait to see it in the future
Sometimes you just have to trust the process ☺️
So inspiring!
I am developing a recently acquirwd passion for gardening. We moved onto 12 acres about 2 years ago and I'm now visualizing flower beds and trees and labyrinth garden paths..!!!
Thanks for sharing your process! I'll keep tuning in.
Amazing! And I love the idea to use cardboard instead of roundup on the grass
Looking good!!
That's great you do this for the entire family 🤠
This is such an amazing video! GREAT job!
Thank you!
Great Job!
Halfway through the video and already filled with ideas - Thanks for sharing 🤙🏽
Me too but I didn't dig anything. The cardboard kills my grass and I only dig the small hole to plant in. I do add a quart of compost to the hole. Sometimes I don't dig and just plant on top of the ground, with just the compost and cardboard on top.
You guys are hardworkers! Looking good. Maybe powerwash the wood fence or stain it.
It was incredibly helpful for me to see the garden beds from start to finish as well hear about the bigger plan for the areas.
The light bulb moment for me was when you were taking us through the area in the backyard showing how you're making future areas/rooms per se in the garden, I know I want to do this in my yard but I just don't know how to start until your post!
Thank you
Any further advice I can give you is to just start somewhere! The very first thing I started with in my backyard was planting that birch tree. I just went from there and started with the large foundational plants.
It's good to put at least four inches of wood chips. Over time as it breaks down, your soil will be so rich. You will have to add more chips as that happens.
Wow, nice size yard! The only thing I would have changed is the area around the bottom of your steps, with a little more space!
Amazing work. Thanks so much for the inspiration.. You gave me some ideas for my back yard… Love and peace from Poland 🙏💖🕊😊
Brilliant, brilliant and brilliant.
Rotorua, New Zealand 🇳🇿
You started with the garden I want to finish up with! Lovely flat grass, no weeds, no brambles. Lovely. Getting to THAT point is the problem. It's easier to make a nice looking garden look a bit nicer. When you start with an apocalyptic wasteland, that's the issue I have! 🤣
We somewhat had that issues at my Dad’s house. It was several years of removing and stripping the yard before finally adding plants in!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Your subscribers and I ... we all stand in awe. Looking forward to your future work on this project. Filming and editing are impressive. Txs. for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Wow this video got blessed by the YT algorithm eh! A lot of people are looking to transform their yards this spring and hopefully found your video helpful!! Keep up the good work Josh!! :D
Haha yes! It’s very exciting to see and I’m appreciative for everyone who has watched this video ☺️
It's a golf course in the backyard. Lovely.
😂
Has that golf course vibe😳
Finally someone doing mulch the right way instead of chucking it out the wheelbarrow lol
So awesome 👍
Amazing!!!
🙌 great work. It's coming along so nicely!
Gorgeous!
wow thats alot of work in 2 months. great job! I will be smothering the lawn in my garden this year. buh bye. it infested my garden while i was very sick for years. now i want it gone 🫶
That's a lot of work to have less grass to cut ! Seriously though it is going to look very nice. I do all the yard work since no one in my house has any interest in it other than it not being jungle. I moved back home to care for my parents in their last years and my mom had s lot of things going on in the yard. She didn't believe in pruning ,lol. She planted some things that made it very diifficult. Ivy, the Bain off my existence! Takes over, and catches all the leaves in fall. Especially where shrubs were not pruned and brought up off the ground. I'm making slow progress, but its getting there. I like the work but time consuming. I'm very accident prone too, lol. Always taking tumbles and getting cut up. I love how you are so young ,but taking such an interest in making your yard a beautiful place to look at and relax in. Great work!
Cardboard works wonders....last yrs with very few weeds coming thru
WONDERFUL!!!!
Very nice. Good work. Kinda reminds me of a golf course
Your parents should be very proud of you!
Impressive young man 👍
Lots of hard work!
Very exciting, great job!
great job!
Fantastic job!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Very impressive! Looks fantastic!
Every house I have ever bought had that nasty hardware/weed blocking black cloth, sticking up through the mulch. And if you tried to pull a weed or grass that got in it, it pulled a yard of that fabric up. I started using strictly carboard like you did here and what a difference. That fabric is useless in a very short amount of time! And cardboard breaks down over time, completely. Good job!
Amazing transformation! Thank you for sharing 😊
Stellar job! Looking forward to upcoming projects! 👏👏👏👍👊😊
Amazing ❤
Congrats with what you have achieved so far, it looks amazing. 🪴
Great plans. It’s going to be beautiful
Looking good
Really enjoyed your video!!
Thank you!!
You really are a wonderful artist!
Nice job!
Your mom was love this! Great job!
It’s going to look awesome. May I make a suggestion? Please plant native plants. It’s really important for the ecosystem of your area which includes all wildlife like birds and pollinators as well as plants.
really, really nice backyard treatment
#1 weed free barrier - love it!
wow! thank you for the inspiration. great job and you make it look so easy. ha ha
Looks nice and precise. It's nice to have a big yard to be able do your various plans. Keep it going!
Very nice
Well thought out planting beds. It will look great when you are finished.
Very good video. You gave me some good ideas. Thank you.
Great job
Thank you!
