16 minutes to show the essentials of true honest craftsmanship. And look the agent provocateur burst is born. Outstanding Derek.
guitar player of 20 years.. And this is one of the most amazing guitar paint jobs I’ve ever seen. Too bad it’s not an insane extended range 7 string
If you were a guitar painter of 20 years your comment would hold more weight.
Beauteous.
I've been watching your channel for a while now, and that's the prettiest thing you've done.
Simply stunning.
That middle pickup sounds awesome. And I really like the flip flop burst. I remember a time when that paint was 1000 bucks a gallon back in the 90’s when it came out. Beautiful guitar Derek
yea was fantastic
Didn't expect blue with candy tone.👌
That's gonna be extravaganza guitar❤️
attention to details makes a huge difference.
Ohhh it was this guitar !!! Yeah looks awesome & that was awesome how you where able to bend the quilt this time around !!
As is, I was digging the darker edge but the finished setup is insane.
What a piece of quilt... wow, wow, wow. your guy is really setting you up.
Absolutely gorgeous. Would've loved some footage when it spent time in NM
actually it was in Texas. not NM. brain fart
I know I am in a minority, but I hate tele's, but love strat's, and figured topped strat's I really like! I wish you would do more! but I could watch you stain all day! That purple edge totally transformed the look! STUNNING!
I looked up the guys you recommend...why don't more people know of them? Their work is impeccable.
And again: This wood is fantastic, priceless ... As is the colour. Rob
thank you
Holy shit dude , thats one mighty fine paint job Awesome 😁😁🤘🤘🤘🤘
love that quilt and the blue/purple takes it off the rails! SWEET!
Nice! That looks great. I never would’ve thought of doing a color change paint as a burst. Good job Derek.
low psi air compressor helps blow glue into tight spaces. Try it out
"Fantastic Craftmanship!" The 'Godzilla" in the room that I've not seen you tackle yet, is a PRS style guitar , from scratch, with a violin carved top & back such as a 'McCarty 594'. I guess your "LP Double Cut Carved Top" qualifies, but I think of them as different guitars. That blue LP double cut is my favorite of all of your amazing builds. -- Antonio, Orlando FL
GOOD CALL MAN! The blue on the edge was too dark! but that last step spraying the blue/purple metallic just totally made it! BEAUTIFUL BLENDING IN! THOSE PICKUP RINGS JUST FINISH IT!🤟👍
This is the most beautiful finish I've ever seen! Wow! I want one!
This gives me some ideas for the refinish on my first g-tar.
It turned out awesome and sounds nice too. The combo stain and airbrush worked out great in the end.
Damn that color is amazing!
thanks!
Such a beautiful finish.
thanks buddy
That is one beautiful guitar- very impressive - your skills are amazing. We’re watching
that figure, stain and paint job is amazing
I used a dremel router with a 1/16 th inch wide bit to create kerfs to do the same thing -- worked pretty well and was fast
it looks great, sounds good too.if i had the tools i would do something similer to the strat body i have.
Super impressive results. I am not of a ST guy but man is that staggering.
Great instructional video 👍. Lot's of relavent information. Glad to have found your channel. 🎵🎸
Cool build. It would have been nice to see the compete guitar, a body and neck shot.
Wow!
Great build Derek
Take care buddy
👍✌😎
Looking sharp Big D. I almost bought a blue guitar the other day, I've never owned a blue one before. But I talked myself out of it, then promptly lost the money in a casino. I pretty much kicked my own ass on that one.
Love it ! Great build
Beautiful colrs and finish. Can a very thin Maple veneer be bent over comfort cuts without cracking?
That's a beautiful fingerboard, gave me an idea to stain to match.. Thought I'd share in case u wanted to use.
Absolutely Bad Ass, Sounds Gnarly As Hell!!!🔥👍🤘🏼👊
"the darker sides catch the eyes too much, let's put a spectacular purple-pink iridescent finish instead"
I wish I had room for a shop!
Wow great job,i love that paint🤘🤘love that tone to
Great job... stunning wood.
I had the same thing happen to me with the blue Angelus dye, it turned purple. I really like it, though. Happy accidents!
This quilted maple is seek!! natural binding on this guitar is missing!!
yea that could have been on this for sure.
That final finish is AMAZING. Have you done any jazzmasters like this?
Looks good Derek.
Interesting that you didn't hog out some of the pickup cavity before routing. Is that your normal process?
I'd LOVE for you to do a video on how you sand out the slot for those blade switches.
I assume Angelus dyes on the color? You didn't mention it this time. 😉
Love your fancy paint booth Derek! 🤣
Can you make a video of paining a guitar body in dark night finish like the fender dark night ?thanks
That guitar came out amazing, the burst 💥 on the sides is spectacular, really complemented it,truly one of a kind, I do builds but just partscasters , but I’m getting more into woodworking and loved the start to finish process you time lapsed, what pickups did you use ? Have to check out the neck video ,Once again really enjoyed this
I'd give anything to have a guitar with that paint job
your best bet is to contact some car/bike painter, ask around see if you can find someone who does custom paints (classic car guys will often know good painters) they can hook you up with the craziest paint jobs
what an awesome finish!!!
Looks awesome! I think I saw this on IG... Just sick man.
Beautiful job. Craftsmanship!! I would like information about the paint you are using. I want to give the headstock of my guitar the same color as the body.
And think about your health and use a mask while sanding ! ;-)

Wow. Friggin wow man. Its. Shame theres no humbuckers lol but its b-e-a-utiful!
Looks stuning in the end :) Really electric looking edge
That's friggin' awesome!
Sooo beautiful
Way to be
Big D!
I wonder if you could do the 5-way switch slot with one of those multitools and a narrow blade...?
I don't know. I wouldn't take that to my 300 dollar top. What if it slips
What a stunning looking guitar. Is there any way you can get them to film doing another guitar with the same finish... or if you can try to do it on an upcoming guitar build? I really would love to know how they achieved that finish.... thanks.
That is sick! Love how that came out
Great work by Big D as usual! Inspiring to day the least.
thanks! lots of work into this one.
Great stuff BigD
I'm finally getting notifications again! Yay!
You do really nice work!
Thats a sweet finish!
yea I love it.
For a moment I thought that's dichrolam
Stunning instrument!
Yeah, me too!
Great finish as usual buuuuuuut I'd have gone with gold hardware. As a side note, you should do LP style guitars more often, just my 2 cents :P
Beauty. You rock dude.
Question: where you cut the top wood with a razor (for the arm bend) Are the razor marks sanded out or are on the glue side?
I’m about to re-top an Ibanez prestige with koa or sapele (maybe Maple haven’t decided yet) and can get all the tips I can!😉
I think planing it down 1/8 or a 1/4 inch for the top is where most of my grunt work will be.
Any thoughts or tips? Thanks!
It's on the glued side.
He uses:
1. Chisels to open the wood.
2. Fret saw to cut even deeper.
3. Hot Steaming to bend it.
Great job!
Beautiful man!!🤘
Wow. This is sick!
Amazing job!
Swaaaaaawwwweeeeeeeet.
stunning!
Dude do you sell these guitars you make?
this was a build for Kimball Hardwoods. I have some stuff listed everyonce in a while. I will need to purge soon.
@@bigdguitars where is the stuff listed?
www.bigdguitars.com/products
amazing!!
your speed up router sounded like a little snake charming music
BIG D how much would you charge me to make me a body just like this one with 3 knobs instead of 2. Just bare I want to try to color it. I don't have all the tools you do but I can take over after the body is built. I can become a member if you would like? just give me an Idea about the money needed please? and thank you! BIG fan I've watched a ton of your videos and please keep them coming!
looks very good, and the color change is a great idea. is this a 2k polyurethane sealer and clearcoat over the Angelus dye? what brand is this?
Very nice job!! What dye have you used, water-based or alcohol-based ??
I use angelus leather dyes
Almost 17 minute video, taken from how long to totally build? Amazing look on this one. I curious do you work one at a time or do you have multiple projects going? How long on the average does this take? I already have one of your Signature Series Whisky Barrel Guitar from Justin Johnson's site. Saw the video build of that too. I was always wondering how long it truly takes from start to finish.
Gotta say it, they ruined your quilt top (bend area) by over spraying the hell out of that burst there. You do awesome work. Pity those New Mexico painters didn’t respect it more.
is there any particular reasons to use titebond I instead of II or III which have stronger bond ?
It would be cool to make a Chess Board out of your trimmings.
Con que producto lo tiñes?
You definitely will appreciate a bigger better bandsaw. 17" Grizzly. Happiness.
What was the final paint process? That looks awesome.
Love build videos!!
I'm sorry but where the f do you get your maple from?! Every single one has some of the best grain pattern I have ever seen straight from the lumber yard. "Who's your plug?" As the youngsters would say.
Oh man that came out beautiful. I love the way it reflects different colors like that on the sides.
Oh just out of curiosity what was that riff you played when you switched to the middle and neck position pickups. I know it from a song i used to jam to years ago, but I can't think of it at the top of me head.:-)
I know it's going to come to me eventually after I post this comment :-)
Wind crys mary! I knew i would remember it. Still that guitar came out beautiful
No grain filler?
What kinda pickups?
How difficult is bending a veneer for the sides? I would use a inflatable tube balloon as a clamp,?
man never tried that not sure how it would work
Listening to Slayer huh? Fuck YEA!!!!!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
15:41 this has been driving me nuts can someone tell me the name of the song he plays here?
wind cries mary. Jimi hendrix
@@bigdguitars god bless 🙏🙏
15:40 Jimi Hendrix
how much to color my strat
That's beautiful! Have you ever tried bending the arm contour without doing the relief cuts? Would that work?
I think you are sometimes too critical of your work. I thought you had a great product with the blue/purple and then you farmed it out to be “re-finished “ the perfect paint job simply does not exist! Btw the final finish is exquisite and very, very nice, but it has gone very far from where it started! Still the only person who has any real say about it is the final customer. They are forking over dead presidents in quantity, so what they decide is always right! The guitar looks fantastic and sounds great, so job well done.
