This guy somehow always just really strikes me as a completely normal, regular person, even though he's the best in the world. I like that.

Question: Why put your head on the opposite side of the underhook in the gi?
Answer: Because with the gi, putting your head on the same side leaves you open for a certain gi choke.

Because you have the gi grips with your hands to help stabilize.

You can grab the collar with gi and the head on the opposite side just balances you and pressures him on the ground better.

@pedog with the gi he uses different controls...doesn't join his hands together, underhooks the far side arm, overhooks the other arm (on the side he keeps his head)

hmm how come the difference in head positioning between gi and no-gi? My instructor showed a no-gi pass today where you put the head on the opposite side of the underhook and put your head to the mat(think you are squishing/controlling the opponents head/shoulder with your underhook on one side and your head pressing him on the other). This allows you to use your right arm to base or help control. I'm curious what is disadvantage to this is, because I'm sure Marcelo has a reason to say put the head on the same side of underhook for no gi.

At 0:36, why put your head on the other side with the gi? Wouldn't it be easier to upa?

+JiuJitsu9 nope... its the knee across pass (dunno the name in english)... head on the other side, one hand grab the collar and the other pulls ther arm, while u let just your foot on the half guard and then put the knee across :)

@pedog Join MGinaction and find out! In no-gi he uses underhook+crossface to control the upper body, in gi he uses underhook+overhook. Both controls keep the opponent flat. The gi version's overhook keeps opponent's nearside arm from making grips to set up sweeps or block your knee. In no-gi you don't have friction to keep an overhook, so you have to join hands. Plus the opponent's nearside arm is less of a problem in no-gi; their sweep options are less powerful and the arm is easier to bypass.

I find it interesting he said that. That is a detail he obviously believes in but i still think it is subjective. I myself use both versions as have i seen marcelo use the so called gi version in no gi. They are both good as they are different. i also think he may be teaching from the perspective of prepping everyone for the leo viera finish.

Is it wise to lock it up like that? If the guy on the bottom manages to roll you onto the side you've locked it up on, couldn't that break your ankle/foot? Or at least really hurt it?

Why would the head side position change with the gi?

You are trying to control the top of the opponent and keep him stretched out while you are getting your legs out. In no-gi, if you try to cover both sides, your opponent can slip out, but with the gi, just holding the gi prevents your opponent from sliding out, so you can also control the other side too and you can smother the opponent's face with your chest.

No need to stretch, you just need to adjust your angle a little bit my friend.

Had that happen to me before. The guy on the bottom won't have enough leverage to roll you on the the side you locked the triangle up on because remember, as you are locking the triangle, all your body weight is completely shifted to the opposite side. Hope you can see what I saying.

Nah its almost impossible to sweep/bridge a guy off since your too busy fighting the choke. You can break his balance by sweeping away his arm that he uses for balance but then he will just lay on the side and have a normal triangle. I've been the guy being choked in this position many times and it's a real bitch.
