    42:00 While I agree somewhat with your point about games not hiding vital information in menus, I'd challenge you on the degree of that, would you prefer that every time you meet a new enemy in a game, or a new resource, that the game suddenly lists all the uses, or abilities and stats for that enemy, or lists off all it's weaknesses or special drops.
    It's fine to say people learn as they play, but the fact remains people don't try to think most of the time when it comes to games, if you encounter a problem it is usually 'my first attempt failed, I'm not at the stage to do this yet', sometimes taking a few failed attempts before someone stops being stubborn.
    They will skip over dialogue, skip through help menus or try to skip past spoken lines, they will try to 'figure it out themselves' without help and a whole range of things, and stacking more and more information on them each time they do something, gets more tedious than reading some of the related information.
    And I much prefer games giving access to the information and lore within the game, than having to tab out to look up most of the information, theres a reason games like stardew valley have in game wiki mods and other things. Why Monster Hunter as a game series gives you weaknesses and drops for monsters you encounter. It reduces a massive amount of burden on the player to memorise everything the first time around. Although subnautica could do to improve by listing that important information first, rather than at the bottom of each log, it does drive people to reading it more often than not.
    Since you've actively gotten sulfur in this game it would be easy to make that an example, what stops players from completely missing a game mechanic in getting sulfur, because it is tied to a 'negative event' of being attacked. Is that the sort of thing a player needs to be told in the middle of the panic facing the first instance of sulfur?
    "Oh by the way while you are being attacked, go harvest near it." Players wouldn't have the headspace to remember and act on that. Putting it in a log or giving people an incentive to get closer to that, in itself lets the player explore more.
    As a side note, I assume it is poor wording that 'you should never store important information in menus' could be misunderstood as 'never log story-related information' but I doubt you are making that specific point when you've used the audio log to re-read some of the radio messages for information.
    As a minor edit, the prompt to swap out batteries does show up, but only when the tool runs out of power, this would theoretically reduce the amount of words on screen at any one point in time.

      I'm a little confused about your point as I don't actually disagree with it entirely. I'm not asking games to list or announce all of the information about everything out in the open. For things like creatures you can put the info in any log you like so long as simply encountering and messing around with them can teach you the same information. I'm referring to information that's vital for progression that is stored away in a log without the player's knowledge. Like I find a pda with very important info but I'm just told I got a pda and then lets say I'd gotten pda's before and read them only to find no useful information, why would I bother checking the future ones that might actually have it?

    • @JazzyOfTheHarp
      @JazzyOfTheHarp 7 месяцев назад +7

      @@ThroarbinGaming yeah I do agree with that part as there are some PDAs in the game which will straight up have codes to side doors but then others are just world building. The Devs didn't completely streamline information even if they tried to summarise some parts of the game. While it can be seen as rewarding additional engagement it can be a burden for players at the same time.
      As a minor spoiler for stalkers assuming you haven't read the log yet, the Devs explain a specific resource and how to get it including a summary at the end of the log but then do a bad job explaining how you can hold a fish in your hand to feed them in a similar clear way. It's the sort of thing where you have to decide at what point is it not vital information if it is still solving a problem for the player with the AIs behaviour.

      @ThroarbinGaming I understand where your coming from on this, however when I did my first playthrough of subnautica I did so without reading any PDA, except for one or two related to the Aurora, the game is able to be completed almost purely by exploration, unfortunately however these survival type games like subnautica, minecraft, and terraria are horrible at teaching new players, these game expect you going into them with some level of knowledge of video games, which probably explains why you have a lot of issues with this game in particular as aposed to games like portal, lethal company, and titanfall 2 these games are either straight forward or tell you anything and everything you need to know to complete them. Having someone who doesn't have experience with playing survival games play subnatica for one of their first games is like having an Amish person build a pc, they may know what some parts of a computer are like a keyboard, monitor, or a mouse, but they have zero clue what a cpu is or that it gets installed on a motherboard. The point I'm trying to make here is that, I think subnautica just might not be the right game for you at this moment in time, its also possible survival might just not be your genre of choice, these games are all about exploration, learning how the world works, and slowly grinding your way to be able to get through more difficult areas, for example, in minecraft, you start by punching a tree, you then make tools (note, minecraft didn't always have a crafting recipe book in the inventory) then you go caving to get stone, iron, then eventually diamonds, you then go to the nether (another note, the game NEVER tells you how to make a nether portal, ruined portals give you a hint but it never told outright) in the nether you get ancient debris and an upgrade template to make netherite tools, then you find a nether fortress, get blaze rods, got back to the overworld, etc notice how almost all of these things are things you would eventually do if you were playing minecraft with no knowledge? Subnautica is playable in the same way you just have to explore and collect (collecting includes scaning EVERYTHING you come across) eventually you will naturally progress and with time comes exposure, it's proven that exposure therapy helps to alleviate phobias, this is true with scary things in video games. The Five Nights At Freddy's series got stale because it was the same thing over and over again, and the same thing will happen with anything you might find scary in subnautica, you just need time in the game. That all being said it's your decision to keep playing or not, I personally think the game is worth it as the story is truely amazing and there are some really breathtaking biomes in the game, but if you don't think its worth it then there's no reason not to drop it, at the end of the day, gaming is about having fun so if something isn't fun to you then don't play it.

    There is a difference between "horror" and "terror" and Subnautica has itself firmly nailed down in the "terror" category. The thing that separates terror from horror is that terror occurs almost entirely in your own head while horror happens in front of you (think zombies n whatnot). Subnautica uses vastness, limited visibility, and general alien vibes to make you psych yourself out. The cure for terror, interestingly enough, is simple: exposure. The longer you spend time with something terrifying, the more you understand about it. The more you understand it, the easier it becomes to predict. The easier it becomes to predict, the less terrifying it becomes. Spend more time in Subnautica's ocean, explore carefully, and it will bloom before you like a fishy flower.
    Think of Stalkers as an example. The first time you encountered them, you swam back to the life pod and cowered on top of it. This time around, you stabbed one you had trapped with a knife. They're not as scary anymore, are they? That's because you understand them a little bit better. Believe it or not, but that exact same psychology applies to Reapers and every other big fish in the game.
    You got this, man.
    Also go back to the Aurora's reactor and fix the damn thing; all you need is a welder. >:(

    Responding to 32:00
    Humans kinda don't have a depth limit when using diving equipment. Submarines keep the air at atmospheric pressure, so they deal with absolutely enormous forces pressing on them. On a human body, the only particularly compressible region of our body is our lungs and some area in our ears. Diving suits pressurize the air you're breathing to match the pressure in the area. Yawning or swallowing opens the tubes that equalize the pressure in your ear to the air pressure in your body too. This means you don't experience a pressure differential, and generally don't have much of a problem purely due to depths. Where we get a problem is from depth/pressure changing too quickly, which Subnautica doesn't model.

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 7 месяцев назад

      Well said. Breathing a gas under a higher pressure means more of it is absorbed into our bodies. When ascending this needs to get out again. Doing that too fast is like opening a coke bottles quickly: bubbles that are dangerous. The deeper you go (and the more time you spend at depth) the longer you need to spend going back up. At some point you need too much equipment (for example 6 or more tanks of breathing gasses and hours of time spent waiting) just to spend 15 minutes at depth making it not worth it. Subnautica skips this decompression step completely.

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 7 месяцев назад

      There's a mod that adds decompression and ascent speed limits to the game, though it's more forgiving than in reality. It's a fun mod though. Imagine being chased by a leviathan and having to stay in the water.

    Diver here. How does the pressure on the body changes depending on the depths? Every 10meter under water the pressure on the body increases by one "athmosphere". The "atmopshere" being the pressure the air has on a body when on sea level, also called Atmospheric pressure. So 10 meter under water means the pressure of 2 atmosphere and so on. The record of deep diving was set in 2006 with a depth of 610meters (2000 ft.) with the appropied deep diving gear. In terms of inventions the C-Researcher ( a oneman piloted Submarine, which looks similar to the seamoth or vise versa) has reached depths of 3000 meters ( 9843 ft.)
    So 200meter isn´t all that much xD

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 7 месяцев назад +6

      Well said, but for a normal scuba diver 200m (660ft) is basically unreachable. Normal divers dive to 40m max and it takes quite a bit of training to go to 45/50m since decompression is commonly required. Below that one usually dives Trimix (a gas mix with added helium). Diving below 75m already takes a ton of training and equipment (advanced trimix with hypoxic gas mixes).
      I'm a cave diver with most of that training and yet I have just a few friends who have ever dived below 100m.

      @jlyn608 7 месяцев назад +27

      Yeah... games like Subnautica are basically built on discovery, and much of that takes place as reading because such is what can help to create that immersive vibe of slowly piecing together what's happening, and the like. Plus, survival games in general, among many other genres, do kinda demand a bit of willingness to check some directions/keybinds/et cetera. If you're going into such with a prejudice against the very notion of ever having to read, and judging it to always be some kind of knock against the game if it tries to require doing so, then it's just not a good match.
      As a comparison, it'd be kinda like playing Portal with no subtitles and the sound off, because of deciding in advance, without giving it a chance, that "games shouldn't have dialogue." Or mashing through something like undertale without reading, for a more direct comparison. Like, sure, you can absolutely do both, but, well... if your goal is to see what people like about a game? That can't happen if you're policing what parts of the game you're willing to engage with.
      TO BE CLEAR! It's totally valid to like what you like, and there's no *wrong* way to have fun. But, well, as far as content is concerned, people tend to watch blind gameplay because they're excited about the shared experience of someone else's discovery and such. If you're pre-judging and avoiding some part of the experience, based on your own assumptions about how it should be? People will have a lot less fun with that. No one enjoys feeling like something they think is cool is being dismissed as bad before giving it a chance, after all.
      I will note, as well, that people will basically always hate when others seem to be speaking negatively of the design for a game they like, unless it's either an experience they can relate to... or something you can basically support with evidence. It's totally fine to share your confusion or frustration or whatever else, as that's part of what people *want* to see! But keep in mind that you don't want to be too quick to blame the game, itself-- or rather, you don't want to *sound* like you are. If the vibe you're giving is "wow, I think this is dumb and bad," to every mechanic that gives you trouble or trips you up, then people start to get *stressed* about the discovery, and will get *much* more aggressive about trying to backseat, too, which just spoils the fun for both sides.
      Either way! It's always best to play whatever *you* find fun. It's always neat to see someone stepping out of their comfort zone, of course, but, well, "if it isn't fun, what's the point?" So, still looking forwards to whatever might be next, after how much fun Portal and such were to see a fresh take on. The most consistent way to "make numbers go up" is basically always reliant on how much fun YOU can have with things, at the end of the day-- entertainment is contagious, after all!

    but since you are playing the first game i implore you to keep going, the story progression is great and has a satisfying conclusion.
    also i strongly suggest taking the time to listen to all the audio logs from the PDA's that you pick up, the ones that don't have audio generally aren't worth your time, but the audio logs are good background info to listen to while you play.

    A few things that I have to say: scan everything as it is important to the lore and to get a feel of the game, listen to the voice logs as well, the moonpool also repairs your vehicles while they charge, it just does it slowly. most creatures cannot one-shot you, not even the giant snake mandible thing (called a Reaper Levithan) and if you just swim or fly past it, it may try to attack you but if you are in your seamoth with full durability, try to get away and repair the seamoth, the next part of the game involves going to the Aurora. Good luck.

    • @mallk238
      @mallk238 6 месяцев назад

      I think the fact that he is expected to scan everything does kinda help his point about vital information hidden in the pda. I loved having a place I could go to if I needed to reference any particular information I would need during normal gameplay. If it had some fun additional information to flesh out the lore that was pretty fun too! ...But there's really only 3 types of logs you find:
      1) voice acted ones that are there mainly for plot purposes that will try to lead the player along and get them to progress the story (they activate beacons that lead to life pods that are pretty much always nearby objects of interest)
      2) Text base ones that refer to hostile creatures or useful materials you can interact with and gain from, this one is self explanatory (literally lol)
      3) Stuff that is only there because someone on the dev team really wanted to write fish lore. While I completely understand the desire to make a realistic encyclopedia of all the creatures you can encounter in an environment...it also means that to find the information you WANT to find you have to parse through it in a way that can be overwhelming for someone who just wants to sit down and play a game about not dying at the bottom of an alien sea.
      I feel like telling him to scan everything is only feeding into that problem. It clutters up the pda and only makes a player who doesn't like reading in their video games less likely to read in their video game.

    @soliera3457 7 месяцев назад +1

    I absolutely understand your take on storytelling in video games, but I would argue that Subnautica's story being presented in this way is purposeful to it's design. There is still a story happening around you and unfolding in real time: that's what the infection and radio broadcasts are, and this story doesn't require you to read logs in a data bank like you said, but there is another story in the game that tells the lore of the environment and those who came before.
    The PDAs are a remnant of the past that you are uncovering as you play, and while important to the overall story, it presents itself in a different way than most stories can normally unfold. Similar to reading books in Skyrim or other RPGs to learn about the world, and I definitely get where you're coming from. World building in this way isn't for everyone, and if its not something you can personally enjoy then Subnautica just isn't for you. There's nothing wrong with that either; it's just a genre that's quite frankly really nerdy, and while I personally love reading stuff like this, I can absolutely get behind why someone might not.

    Gonna be honest, there are very good reasons (and also very bad reasons) for putting information into something like a logbook. For one, you're piecing together a mystery, and a lot of games centered on exploration or solving mysteries will utilize this as you're functionally a detective. For another, in a game like Subnautica, the game is doing you a favor of allowing you to access the information when it's convenient for you. Typically, it's something small, such as a life form scan that you can skim over right away or come back to later if you desire. For more important information, they want to make sure you don't miss it while playing and can come back to it as needed. In both cases, it's not forcing you to access the information right away or sitting through a cutscene -- both of which could be very inopportune as you may be drowning, dealing with a reaper, or trying to remember which way was out of that cave (and then drowning). Everyone would be completely pissed (rightfully) if they had the game play interrupted in those circumstances. Good games that have the story arranged this way also typically reward players for taking the time to interact with the information, and not merely towards the story or immediate objectives.
    To be honest, this used to be an extremely common mentality amongst gamers, one that's died off a lot over the last -- I don't know? -- decade or so. That's honestly for the best, as most games have very good reasons why they are designed the way they are, and you are arbitrarily locking yourself out of the story, and consequently a lot of amazing games, too. Bad examples on both extremes of seemingly endless text that serves no gameplay or narrative purpose exist as do cutscenes that over stay their welcome or are pointless (the worst example I can think of, and I'm not making this up, was a ~45 minute cutscene in an extremely well respected, genre defining game) also exist. But just because a game does one or the other, doesn't mean it's a bad game, and ignoring how it's trying to tell its story is just going to be shooting yourself in the foot.

    I think Subnautica is a fantastic game. But only if certain conditions are met. Firstly the player has to lose their fear of the ocean. I think everyone is scared when it comes to the deep blue, but in this case losing that fear will allow you to explore, find new exciting things and actually seeing what the game has to offer. A lot of that comes to knowledge. Knowing what things are actually dangerous, and where those dangers are.
    And secondly you have to engage with the information the game gives you. Besides all the PDA entries for all the things you can scan which help with world building, there is a section literally called "codes & clues" which will lead you towards what to do, without giving you a "to-do list" for the story.

    1) you can get an actual pet, a little fish buddy, if you find the location past 250m
    2) if you're stumped what to do, check the lifepod locations, devs placed them at points of interest
    3) depth pressure is not simulated (you can go out in your diving suit even at 2000m depth), but the oxygen consumption increases the deeper you go. Rebreather helps with that.
    4) you can build a whole-ass mobile base in your Cyclops subnarine
    5) you have to go to the wreck eventually, as a bonus you can unlock a badass exosuit while there. You will need it to dive deeper and mine ore clusters. You can also fight Leviathans while in it. It has a grappling hook. GO TO THE WRECKAGE.

    Been loving your series on playing games for the first time, you have so many genuine reactions. Subnautica holds a special place in my heart because 1. I too hate the open ocean and 2. I hate horror games. Not saying I get scared easily, horror games just aren't fun, being scared isn't fun for me, yet Subnautica has been the first game to ever make me scream out of fear. The reason I love Subnautica so much is how rich the story gets layered on top of the fact that you have to kind of overcome certain fears. I agree, I hate reading blocks of text but rest assured that none of that is required to enjoy the story, all of that is background information that I didn't even get around to reading until my second playthrough. That being said, I'm not trying to convince you to continue playing, if you're not having fun, that's fine.
    BUT don't you want to know where that big gun came from? Don't you want to know why the weird alien building says you're infected. Who put up those portals? Doesn't the prawn suit look like it would be so much fun to operate? Who was that talking to you in that vision?

    I haven't seen other comments talk about this so;
    You mentioned in this video that the fear of the big fish is something you can deal with/overcome; but that deep seated paranoia about the open ocean is what *really* gets you. As a long time Subnautica veteran: same. I also tend to hug nearby surfaces to give me a sense of safety, space, & direction.
    Getting that big Cyclops submarine makes all the difference in the world for me in that big empty open water. And ironically, the late game being so deep means you have environment below & around you, so it's less "open water terror"
    If you're willing to keep going long enough to get the Big Ship then things might just get a lot easier for you
    You seem uncertain how much enjoyment vs terror you're having; & worried about time commitment, but I do hope you're able & willing to keep going, & that it'll get a bit less scary as you get better equipment & more familiar with things!

    As great as this game is, and as much as your commentary is funny and interesting, I don't really see how you can talk in this way about your experience with a game if you didn't enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, the game is terrifying, but that's why is captivating and why I find your playthrough thus far so entertaining. I get not wanting to make videos of games people don't want to see, and I also get being busy to the point where you can't play games in your free time, but if you aren't gonna continue the game when it does poorly, why'd you make a second part in the first place? People really do want to see this game from you, the amount of people in the comments saying to continue should be evidence of that, but if you're gonna end it off after it doesn’t do well enough, then I kinda wonder how you actually have fun playing games for youtube? Ig you're better at this than me, but it kinda seems like you're letting the numbers guide your actions rather than your own enjoyment and inspiration for your channel, and that kinda sucks. :(

      I made a second one because the first did perform alright at the end of the day, at least well enough to do a second part. But really, this channel is the only way I can justify playing this games I never got to check out. I don't know if I'll like them or not when I play them. The issue with Subnautica is that it's so long that I can't justify putting in all the time if the video is going to perform poorly because there are loads of others games I can play. If I don't enjoy a game outright then I will refuse to continue, the only reason I say "maybe I continue" is because I enjoy it enough to do so but if there is no apparent interest in that then I'd rather try another game I might enjoy more, takes less time, or performs better on the platform.

    43:52 This is the only real flaw in the game. Every video of a first time player comes to this point: That they find the exit before the entrance to the aurora.
    44:26 That is the correct code...but not for that door

    Subnautica is kinda underrated, so the lower views check out, unfortunately. Still, it is one of the better games out there, so I hope you'll finish it!

    just so you know, you went in the opposite direction of the island, since you were observing your base from the island, and your base was about SE you would have to travel NW from your base.

    If you really refuse to read the databank, stop playing the game. Story and scientific discovery is a major part of the game.

      I wouldn't say so. You can very much stumble your way to the end simply by exploring and searching for upgrades. It is not nessesary to play space detective, although it is one of the best things about this game for me

    Btw I might be wrong, but humans can go really deep. We are mostly water which is pretty incompressible, so the depth doesn't do much to us. The seamoth on the other hand is a big pocket of air so that compresses and gets crushed by the pressure (I might be wrong on this, that's just my experience and knowledge)

    32:10 You are mostly water just like your surroundings. The only issue are the gasses you breath, really, with nitrogen buildup being the first hurdle. Satuaration divers work in a depth of 3000 Feet (1000 meters) on underwater maintenance and construction.

    I think you are gonna struggle to know the story and where to go without looking at the PDAs/ Data Downloads etc... but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.
    I just hope you enjoy the game, if you aren't then don't force yourself to play it. There's a considerable time sink in this game with resource collection/management that can be... painful...
    But... and it's a big butt, if you put the time in there is a big payoff in the end. I was genuinely sad when it was over.
    But once again, don't feel like you have to play for folks if you hate it. Xxx

    P.S. Keep it going :) I was too scared to play this game lol
