    @neuronoc.7343 Год назад

    Honestly, I just feel like LEGO wasn't trying with the RIK. Mindstorms has serious competition, like Vex V5, so the next iteration after EV3 should've been a good contender against that system.
    A sufficient upgrade would've basically been a remodeled EV3 with a rechargable battery, double the RAM and onboard flash storage, and with the form factor of the new ports to go from 8 total ports to 16 I/O ports. The base set could've still just included about 8 peripherals altogether, but the extra peripheral ports would've encouraged consumers to buy expansion packs and what not, with a possible book in extra sensors like Mindsensors had. Perhaps technic sets and even mainstream IPs could encourage mindstorms integration instead of powered up or whatever the technic variant is called.

  • @iPelaaja1
    @iPelaaja1 Год назад

    Well, daisy-chaining has been addressed and with the hub-to-hub bluetooth broadcast you can have infinitely many units connected to each other. The lack of screen is a minus, but the led matrix can be seen from further away and any data is easier to read off your phone or computer display anyways. But yes, the major problem is the lack of sensors and limitations due to cables. Its great to have accurate gyro/accelerometer inside the hub and absolutele positioning on the motors, but the cable lenghts are a really limiting factor. Also the fact that there are no third party sensors, but also that not even lego sells their pwn sensors. What if i want the touch/force sensor? Then you gotta buy the 500$ spike set. And along with distance and color sensor, that’s the only other type of sensor. Yes, you dont need separate angle/rotation/gyroscope sensors, but will miss out on lots of cool sensors, like RFID, sound, temperature, compass, infrared…

    • @rigatonipasta
      @rigatonipasta 3 года назад +1

      My main issue is that it is being marketed as babies first robot. That's not what Mindstorms is. The NXTs and the EV3 were designed as a higher level of LEGO. This new Robot Inventor set feels like a HUGE downgrade. My sister took LEGO robotics all of middle school, and when I sent her the picture of the new "robot" she gagged.

      @@rigatonipasta I give robotics lessons to middle schoolers using EV3 for years. I feel like this set is a very good upgrade. I understand that it feels downgraded, but the versatility offered by the smaller motor (and four of them! ) or the built-in accelerometer is insane. I love the new way of programming too. I really think that it's more accessible for kids, and that it can offer way more flexibility for lego veterans like me! I believe the benefits of the new system outweigh the negatives. I imagine LEGO would make a mobile app that would act as the screen for the programmable brick - similar to Powered Up. The programmable bricks could potentially daisy chain using Bluetooth. I'm really looking forward to the new set. I also loved the original RCX 1.0 and 2.0. The NXT and EV3 had weird shaped motors that weren't compatible with TECHNIC motors, which isn't the case with the new generation or the original RCX.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  4 года назад +1

      You could actually connect power functions motors to the NXT and EV3. Also, I prefer the “weird shape motors” and I always loved integrating them into my large technic Mocs

    I own two NXT's and while they still work, the rechargeable battery packs are swollen and pretty much done for and also the screens haven't worked for years. I want to get the EV3 but honestly it's so expensive and I never really use it anyway, so I'm happy enough with the PC interface.

  • @linuxtardis
    @linuxtardis 4 года назад +2

    There is also another aspect of this set that makes me sad - LEGO (AFAIK) didn't publish information about the internals of the smart brick. Both NXT and EV3 had their Hardware Development Kit manuals and both had their firmware open-sourced. This could have helped various community firmwares (EV3RT, ev3dev, ...). It would be nice to see this for the new bricks too (I know about Pybricks, however I think that they have to rely on reverse-engineering).

    PV- Productions make adapter, and extension cables. They cost quite a bit. Only seen on video never tested them

    Faster startup on the newer system is nice, and I'm sure that there will eventually be third party cables and sensors. The lack of a screen is mildly annoying, but in theory you can just connect it to your computer and still get live interactions with it on your PC.
    But the lack of any support for daisy chaining is a deal breaker, IMO... no real way to do it with the new system is a MAJOR downgrade from the EV3. Faster startup and absolute position motors (which could have at least in theory been made for the ev3/nxt) is no compensation for having fewer i/o ports, particularly when there is no ability to daisy chain devices or otherwise expand i/o capabilities.
    The ev3 system had its flaws, certainly, but i/o expansion through daisy chaining was an absolutely huge deal for a device with the limited number of i/o connections that it had.
    Spike primes seems no better than using an arduino for making robots, even more limited, in fact.

    personally i think the nxt was the best "generation" of mindstorms, nice combination of functionality and playability with a quite easy to get right aesthetic because everythign was just a box. Although i kind of hated ev3 at first because i was afraid that it was going to be a very "locked down" set (that is it only looks nice whenever the official instructions were used) and not really what mindstorms was about (building and creating robots) I was quickly proven wrong by its community of talented people and got myself an ev3. It simply has the best functionality and the most "plug and play" or maybe build and play out of the box that you can get out of the mindstorms line (if you don't mind the long boot times which i personally don't) However. THIS doesn't even look aesthetically pleasing on the official builds and the lack of a maybe a bit bulky but simple to understand system of ev3 and nxt really makes it hard for me to see how this is an upgrade. Im definetely skipping a generation on this one. RCX is better than this.

    Love your collection in the back!
    Also, I own 2 NXTs and an EV3 and love them all! I completely agree with a lot of other fans that the EV3 was better. While the brick is bigger, having the dot-matrix display is super useful , along with extra buttons. The remote is also quite useful, you can daisy chain, and it works with my NXT sets. Not to motion I've always just thought it running Linux is just cool. Wish it had Python support in the excellent programming software, but other than that there really isn't much in the new set that really seems like much of an upgrade. Not to mention it won't work with the HiTechnic sensors...

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад +1

      The new set has one major upgrade, absolute positioning motors! Extremely useful for synchronizing walkers and you don’t have to use touch sensor synchronization. NXT is king! I think new system is better than EV3 but the NXT will always be king.

    • @cadenchurchill4296
      @cadenchurchill4296 3 года назад

    • @markt1964
      @markt1964 3 года назад

      @@Unbrickme While you might need touch sensors for synchronization without absolute positioning, at least it was still technically possible to do in the ev3, as long as you were willing to put the time and resources into making it happen. Absolute positioning motors are absolutely no compensation for the complete inability to expand i/o capabilities through daisy chaining. For what it's worth, there's nothing about the spike prime system that should make absolute position motors special either. Either LEGO or some other third party could have always made such a device, if there had been enough demand for it. A resourceful person skilled in electronics could probably hack an existing nxt/ev3 motor and add supplement components to give it a "home" position on startup, effectively making it an absolute position motor.

It just goes together. Its made up for little kids. I mean where is the challenge. The new bricks make it too easy, u don't need to figure out a way of building. U just do it because it's easy a'd possible with the new set's. If u have a kid from an age of 7 u can give it a set like this, but what i don't understand is why they put these sets in the lego mindstorms category. They are just giving the previous lego mindstorms sets a bad name because the new ones are too childish. Come on people at LEGO, make a category for these set's, like: 'LEGO EDUCATION JUNIOR' but don't put it in the same category as the OG lego mindstorms. Ignorant people will think every lego mindstorm set is for kids. Because of these new models. If i could speak to the people at LEGO. imo as a competitor in WRO, the new Hub is way weaker than the EV3 brick. The EV3 brick already struggles running python with subpar performance compared to the normal EV3-G software. While the new Hub comes with Lego support for python instead of a third-party firmware, the specs of the Hub are genuinely worse than the EV3 brick. (assuming that the Hub is just a re-skinned version of the one included in the Spike Prime set which is likely since it's referred to as the Large Technic Hub) sacrificing two motor ports is huge especially since even now there are some who use NXT to RCX cables to control multiple motors with a single port. besides, the EV3-G software being built on LabView opens up the option for many custom programming blocks which will likely be unavailable to new 51515 set users. Lego may not want to phase out EV3 entirely since much of the competitive FLL and WRO scene will still continue to use EV3 exclusely.

    • @blender6426

      though if cross-compatibility was introduced between the new Motors and the old EV3 ports it would be fantastic since the new Motors have a more accurate tachometer.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  4 года назад

      Some of the same exact concerns were met when the ev3 first came out. LEGO still has an advantage in robotics because it can be combined with technic. Technic creations, as you know, can be extremely complex. The 2 ports aren’t exactly sacrificed either. They are both input/output. Up to 6 motors or 6 sensors. So like, you could have 5 motors and one sensor from one hub for instance. As for FLL not phasing our EV3, I can tell you that basically up until 2015-2016, NXT used to be the primary robotics tool in FLL. Please keep in mind that these concerns are just concerns because this system is new. Ev3 was also hated back in 2013 when it first came out. As time goes on, everyone will love the new system, just like how everyone embraced ev3

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад

      @@lker6501 Less ports isn't something bad. EV3 had 4 motor ports and 4 sensor ports. This one has 6 motor/sensor ports, which is great, since you can have more motors or more sensors. Also keep in mind that, the only real purpose the touch sensor served was to synchronize the motors, such as for walkers. Because the new motors now have absolute positioning, touch sensors are now rendered obsolete.
      Also, it's not like stronger specifications automatically made the EV3 better. unlike NXT, it used a linux-based operating system, which made it INCREDIBLY SLOW for powering on/off. Seriously, it was much slower than even my computer. Whats up with that. The EV3 also became very quickly out-dated and slow. Unlike the EV3, the new system powers on/off incredibly fast, you can finally make walkers and synchronize them without ever needing touch sensors, 6 ports isn't actually less because they're both input/output, and finally, you can use the powered up motors, which have smaller and better shaping for technic fans and technic creations.

    You can see that there was a likely a lot of product development pressure to keep the price the same as the 31313 set which was already quite expensive to begin with and LEGO wanted to reach a wider audience. As a result, they had to take some cost cutting measures such as using the same brick from SPIKE and using fixed cables. This was likely also the reason they made the decision to give up on the touch sensor to incorporate an additional motor I.e. more people would want the extra motor in the kit. The overall package seems to be designed to make entry easier for Newbies. The lack of backwards compatibility is just a cash grab - straight up.
    All that said, I do see this as a technical downgrade from the EV3 which has much higher limits overall.

    The moment I saw the new mindstorm set I hated it . Not only does it lack the screen , the interchangeable,backwards compatibility it also lacks 3rd party support because I don't think there is a way to insert blocks into the program . Moreover it feels like lego is copying there own homework . They just recolored the spike and called it a new product . To end with the thing I hate the most is the fact that they removed 2 ports . I regularly take place to robotics competition (wro,fll) and all of the reasons above are crucial for the robot but I think the most crucial is the amount of ports . In the competition almost always we use all 8 ports of the robot . Sometimes not even 8 were enough and instead of adding they removed 2 ports . I hate every single part of it and I hate how lego is trying to milk money instead of giving us a good product

      1) I believe we will get third part support soon, right after the official set releases October 15th
      2) The removal of 2 ports isn't bad at all. It comes with 6 input/output ports, instead of 4 input and 4 output, you can sort of go crazy with 5 motors and 1 sensor, for example. Also keep in mind that, for the NXT 2.0, 2 of its ports were almost always occupied by 2 touch sensors. Touch sensors were only really useful for synchronizing motors and walkers. The new system has motors with absolute positioning, meaning, the new system renders the touch sensors obsolete

      @@Unbrickme The programing/coding with this will be more similar to real life coding then EV3 LabView.
      The Display LED will allow easier programing games like tic tac toe.
      The motors are in better shape to be integrated with any built.
      The built-in gyro sensor will allow easier built of gyro bot.
      One more motor then EV3.
      Lithium battery included.

      @@kleinfeicht Lego is ultimately a luxury item, and if I may be honest, has always felt somewhat overpriced for what you actually get. However, when you consider the quality of the product, and particularly if you compare it to the quality of competitors, you see that you aren't entirely paying top dollar for nothing.

    You all understand that this new robots is for a lower age group. It’s not an upgrade. It’s meant for the elementary school age group instead of the high school.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  4 года назад +1

      That’s wrong. Ev3 and NXT were all for 10+ just like this, and yet those were adapted by even serious universities. The sad truth is THIS IS REPLACING EV3. It even says “retiring soon” next to the ev3 kit on legos website

  • @parol12

    I already have EV3, if i buy this there may be a possibility of use them together?

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  4 года назад +1

      Unlikely. You couldn’t daisy chain NXT to ev3 or RCX to nxt. You could still create robots using both with clever techniques like, an ev3 motor activates a touch sensor from the new spike prime system, and have back and forth interactions like that
