      Mat VanHaalal true but new system also has absolute positioning motors, powered up compatibility with technic sets (different from power functions compatibility on NXT and EV3 since power functions motors don’t have internal rotation sensors but powered up motors do). Internal 3 axis gyro and accelerometer, programmable and fully customizable remote control when streaming program (better than the one offered in NXT and EV3) and more! Both systems have their advantages

    The EV3 is a full fledged computer.
    I can run Debian on it (without modifing anything or breaking warranty, it's as easy as pluging in an sd card) and use any programming language what so ever: C, C++, Python, Java, etc.
    I can run a web server on it and host a web application to control it from a smartphone or computer browser without installing any other software on them.
    And it has a USB host port to which one can connect every sort of device (Wi-Fi dongles to connect to access points and the internet or host an access point, webcams to see what you are doing, flash drives, ethernet dongles, arduino boards, other older mindstorm bricks, etc).
    One can even connect to the USB port a WeDo usb hub and use any Power Function device through it.

    I agree on multible topics, like the formfactor, compatibitity and the load-cell-module and the absolute encoder motors are indeed amazing.
    But:
    My first thought was "Oh holy shit, I miss a real display!" The dot matrix the new system has, is just not having enough possibilities and functions. It´s more a playing feature than a usable function.
    Losing Daisy-chaining is also a HUGE setback and will piss off many experienced Mindstorm fans.
    And also the name gives me a headache: EV3 was a short and simple name. Let´s just call it EV4 ! ! !

    One problem that I've looked into and there's (from what I've found) really no way to extend the cable for larger builds. It was an easy fix with EV3/NXT because you had swappable cables, inventor just has the cables connected directly and you can't change em. Wish they included like an extension cable that would take the old cable and add more length to it but I'm not Lego so I can't change that.

    Great video! Quick question about the ultrasonic sensor in 51515. I just built Tricky, and the Ultrasonic sensor seems a little sketchy. Most of the time, it measures correctly when things are close, but then I see momentary readings where it says something is 200cm when it’s definitely not 200cm away. Also, anything over 150cm distance registers 200cm (e.g., if something it’s 152cm away, the sensor says it’s 200cm away). I did this test on a flat wall with the sensor pointed perpendicular to it. Did you have same issues?
    Do you think it's worth it to get the Spike Prime Expansion set to use with 51515? Also, how do you know there's going to be daisy-chaining in the future.
    Thanks!

    That is interesting, LED display panel with Bluetooth. It takes time when you try to create communication with sort of data in an open medium and high return rates, with this I think you can create many robots or remote devices in response to your plan. ( Before testing with codes or completing the design communication is one thing on the checklist and any of the comment I read below they talking about cable options or adaptive cords working with )

    1) EV3, NXT, NXT 2.0 and RCX all had LCDs, new hub has led matrix display.
    From my experience with NXT and EV3 its screen is absolutely fine for interfacing with a hub as well as debugging with on hardware feedback. It is also can be used for interfacing with a program in many ways (especially on EV3). While new display looks cool it can't be used for more precise debugging such as identifying precise error causing readings.
    2) Absolute encoding is nice but you can deal with lack of it using consistent start position or limit check where possible.
    3) Attached proprietary connectors are a bad ide in terms of design flexibility as well as making it harder to manufacture third party sensors and modules.

    Most of the advantages stated are not related to the EV3 brick, but to the motors. Lego could have updated the hardware in the EV3 brick, made it smaller and offers new/alternative motors. To bring all advantages to the EV3 system, but they preferred to break the compatibility to start a new ecosystem. Breaking what is so awesome about Lego (keeping the compatibility for 50 years).
    It's easy for a guy wearing an Apple shirt to ditch on Linux 😜.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад

      They didn’t necessarily start a new ecosystem, powered up has already been established for a good while now. I’m honestly just glad that everything modern lego is compatible with each other. We haven’t had this since like the 9v system. Remember we had power functions cables and mindstorms cables which weren’t really compatible

    • @thebrockster8783

      Updating the brick and making everything smaller is literally what they did. The Ev3 cables for the motors sucked anyway so I don’t miss those either

  • @codingwithculp
    @codingwithculp 3 года назад +6

    These are all great points, especially point #2, the absolute positioning motors are great and incredibly accurate. I did an experiment, doing 100 rotations of a motor and it always returned to the 0 position when commanded.
    I think you left out a MAJOR improvement though, the onboard accelerometer and gyros on the new Hub. This is a MASSIVE improvement and frees up art least one sensor port on those EV3 designs that use a gyro and this gyro and accelerometer is MUCH better than the EV3 gyro sensor.
    I also like the lightweight and size of the new hub, it is almost shocking how light and small it is.
    I also like the software that comes with the 51515 set much better and since I have been working with micro-python on various micro-controllers since nearly the beginning of micro-python I LOVE the micro-python implementation on the hub. In fact the HUB is based on the STM32F413 microcontroller which has excellent micro-python support.
    I do like the screen on the EV3 a bit better, I am not a fan of the 5X5 LED display. I would have rather have had a small, color touch screen LCD.
    Right now though, I still like the EV3 a tiny bit better. With more time using it, and updates from Lego and the community the new hub will probably surpass it in my mind.

    can any one help me in directing the way to control motors from laptop with or without ev3. I wish to control large set of sensors and motors from computer which are synchronous to each other. attaching them to different ev3 brick would not let me communicate with each other for information. As we have limitation of number of motors and sensors to a single ev3 brick. any direction would be helpful. And another reason is I wish to implement some AI and ML in my decision making via python. I feel EV3 bit has only limited cpu power and storage.

    I began working on a huge project, big robot and also very complicated, but that was 1 year ago and I bought EV3 because it was much cheaper then when it was released and the new system wasn't even out. I encoutered the problem of not having enough EV3 motors and power functions motors that I wanted to use somehow, and I found a video from technic robot on how to modify a cable to be able to connect not 1 power functions motor, but 2 to 1 port, each one moving just in one direction, but I used 2 of them as periodic function changers, and combined with other systems I could get 11 functions out of a single Ev3 brick, using a total of 8 motors, and they will change pretty fast, put in a way that more of them will be free to move at the same time, so really the amount of ports you have is not a limitation if you have some creativity. It will also have 4 sensors, and each of them will calibrate and feel more functions, again, no need for the new motors, and yes, the EV3 motors and brick are very large, but if you are a good builder this shouldn't be a problem. For my project I had to rebuild many parts many times to fit all the stuff and not be too large, but in the end, if you have a limited budget, plenty of pieces and old motors laying around, like many lego fans, EV3 is still very much worth it. Plus the blocks programming is very intuitive. Nice video btw.

    • @Unbrickme

      Yeah well, don't have the money :))) now I'm only buying part if I need them for my robot, but other than that, I have all I need. And after I'm done building it, I'll spend a lot of time programming it, so I won't be building other things for a while.

    Personally : I like the EV3 (or the NXT for that matter) over the 51515. For one : When developing I like to monitor several variable-values. Whether that's on a monochrome or color-LCD screen : I don't care. But this "monitoring" is a lot harder with the "tetris-style" screen.
    You "rant" about the EV3 not having a color-screen.... the 515151 doesn't either, though... it's not even a real screen, in my opinion.
    Also, I'm not a great fan of python per sé. And The EV3 was, in the later stages, also programmable in Python although I have a feeling that there were two versions of this Python from different sources. I had it installed from the lego-website but when trying examples I discovered this.
    Personally I much rather work in RobotC. For me, Python is not better readable that any other programming-language I've worked with
    NXT was programmable in NXC. In my opinion the best IDE I worked with for mindstorms. However, NXT only had large motors.
    The EV3 has Medium-motors available, so that, for me, is not an arguement to choose 51515 over EV3
    About the touch-sensors to "synchronize": I used to start from a known position (for example : All the way down or whatever. then keep track of motor-movement from there.
    However, this absolute positioning in 51515 can be a great advantage. Also the touch-sensor has "evolved" into a force-sensor. That's a nice development.
    One of the main-features for advanced devolopers was the possiblity to daisy-chain multiple EV3's (up to 4, I believe). So, In that regard it's a step back.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад

      You have many great points. And I completely agree with you that NXT is king! I loved NXC myself too! Although, EV3 was never compatible with power functions (you could connect with cables and converters but no rotation sensor feedback) new system is a major advancement in terms of this. You can finally code lego Technic sets with python. That’s pretty insane. As for monitoring the variables, I understand where you’re coming from, since I do a lot of such coding on the new system myself. The software actually lets you really easily monitor all the variables from the computer itself. Plus the new screen is much larger and it’s very bright. New one looks pretty great too in the dark! Yes, EV3 did have medium motor available, but it was still much larger than the powered up motors offered and you still had to use the absurdly large hub.

    My new system should arrive in the next day or two and I am very excited to get it. I already have the spike prime education set but it really isn't a great beginner set for kids because it assumes they have technic building skills. Many of the lessons require kids to realize they need to upgrade the design to make it work, and if they haven't built anything, they have no chance. This set looks like it will be far superior for kids getting into robotics and programming.

      Unbrickme I’m new to this and still and I’m still between this and EV3. Been a beginner I don’t mind not having the daisy chaining yet but I do wondering what lead the lego people to leave such an important feature out. From what I’ve seen it’s very crucial for the competitions. To my eyes the 51515 isn’t a direct successor to EV3 so a conspiracy of mine is that maybe they are going to release another mor feature proof version sometime soon? Lol

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад

      Most fans have had this idea, that this set isn’t actually a successor to the ev3, but I can confirm, they won’t release another version. LEGO is marketing this as a direct success to the ev3. Plus, it doesn’t lack enough features to make it not a successor to the ev3. The only thing that’s missing now is daisy chaining, every other function can be replicated. The new hub does support up to four Bluetooth low energy connections so it communicate with four different hubs. This might mean that there are four in total, or one main hub, with four being slave hubs, so 5 hubs total. Because the hubs can actually communicate with each other via Bluetooth, I have no doubt that daisy chaining will be implemented in the future via software update.

    I like that the new hub and motors are smaller, and their shape seems more practical and you get four instead of three and that it boots up faster, but in all other aspects it just seems like a fairly substantial step back. First of all, EV3 just looks much better. Just white, gray and black. Much more edgy that way. Secondly, and unlike my previous unbiased objective assessment, this one comes down to personal preference, it seems like the building style that emerges from the forms of the components is very different across these sets. The 51515 does look more convenient, and it might allow for more efficient and elaborate technical designs, but one thing I always really enjoyed with the EV3 was the challenge it provided. Correct me if I'm wrong, but just at a glance, I think I could make a rileyrover type vehicle using the 51515 just by pinning two motors and whatever this set has instead of the universal ball wheel to the bottom of the hub. It would all just fit together in a neat little box. A box with wheels, challenge completed. With the EV3, you can not do that. There is no obvious way to fit the motors and the hub together, you have to use extra pieces if you want to make anything, and with that you get a greater level of variability. You can be extremely creative with the 51515 if you want, and if you know how, but with the EV3 you don't have the option not to be creative.
    Also I have been working with the EV3 for almost five years now, and I'm still finding out about new things it can do. Just about a week ago I found out that the EV3 infrared sensor can measure the direction from where the remote signal is coming from, which you can't use with 51515 because you don't get an infrared sensor. I also think that you get greater control with an independent gyro sensor rather than an inbuilt one.
    The old left to right application also felt more unique, the cable plug variables made it really dynamic in my opinion.
    Side note, you don't really need to use touch sensors to calibrate your motors, you can just set it up so the motor stalls in its furthest position, and detect the power spike.
    I guess the new system just feels kind of sterilized.

    From your standpoint I agree with you, but from a robotics learning standpoint, I kindly disagree. I have been doing robotics with EV3 and NXT for the past 4 years and any day i would prefer the EV3 over the 51515 set. Here are a few reasons why:
    First, the new set does not provide any gears. This was a great disappointment to me because it is important to learn about gear ratios and the speed and torque for people interested in engineering.
    Secondly, although the EV3 screen may look like something from the 80's, it is actually preferred in my opinion. With this screen that can print out multiple lines, is very useful for datalogging different variables that change during the program. It is harder to do this with the new kit from what i can tell.
    Lastly, the EV3 has better third party support for multiple languages. Since it is a Linux computer, a variety of creative projects can be done with it. I program my EV3 in C using RobotC, and for now, only Scratch and Python are used for the 51515. However, this may change, as only the new kit has recently came out and more language support may be added later on.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 года назад

      I think even from a learning robotics standpoint the new system has a lot of advantages, like the internal 3 axis gyro
      I do see where you’re coming from. However, you shouldn’t be limited to the parts you get in the kit. One of my main reasons is powered up compatibility. Connect your mindstorms computer brick to literally any lego technic powered up motors! Plus, I like to use my lego Technic collection to make robots, so I get plenty of gears, gearbox parts, and much more with my pieces. 2) yes display is just a personal preference 3) the kit is indeed new and more programming language support will come our. Ev3 is SEVEN years old, and back when it first came out python wasn’t supported natively. But now it has plenty of third party support. When ev3 first came out it didn’t really have any third party support.
