Hey Kyle. The EV3's lifespan really lines up w/ when I started teaching middle-school robotics (2014). I didn't realize it was a new product at the time. I also much say that your channel was a really big help in those early days; I hadn't studied robotics but was tasked to teach the class. Your tutorials helped me and my students a ton. In November 2015, Lego Education had a fire sale on retired NXT stuff. I picked up a bunch of stuff steeply discounted back then that I've been very happy with and am hoping to do the same with EV3 sets. That may not be possible if they are looking to liquidate the last of their stock in July via partners (instead of doing it themselves), as suggested by the post Kyle referred to, but I'm going to keep watching the store just in case.
A fire sale would be really fantastic... at the same time, I'm mildly concerned that this video may start a spree of panic buying and drive up the prices even further. Keep watching those prices closely 👀
I was starting to like the new system until the permanent shutdown of the EV3 platform was officially announced. Now I wish that the EV3 could stay around longer. Once the EV3 goes out of production in June, the price will be ridiculously inflated, and it may be impossible to get one for a reasonable price.
It's certainly sad to see the EV3 go, but no product can stay around forever. I encourage you to bring an open mins to the new MINDSTORMS and don't let the EV3 going away sour your impression of the new one. You might find you enjoy the new one more if you give it a chance!
I must have got really lucky then because I just purchased a brand new never used never opened lego Mindstorm ev3 set and i only paid $100. Canadian dollars for it.🙂👍✌

Hi Kyle. Thank you very much for the guidelines you sent for programming an EV3 plotter to draw circles/curves. Since receiving them I have tried numerous times to implement them, but alas to no avail. I get the X Y plotter to draw various lines, most of them being radiants going out from the center in various directions (as I try out different values for the R ant T, on the X and Y motors). Few of the lines start straight and then make a turn, again straight. I read the material you suggested (a very good tutorial indeed) but found no practical help there. I have used 2 large math blocks, fed them with R and T values from variable blocks and set the formulas to: a*cos(b) and to a*sin(b). C and D remained 0 values and to be on the safe side I have tried changing the formula to: a*cos(b)+C-D , which made no difference. I guess I misunderstood your guidelines. I'd wish someone would be willing to elaborate on the topic of drawing curves. Emanuel
Hi Emanuel, maybe another thing you can try is setting the motor positions using these equations. So set the x-axis motor to the value a*cos(t) and the Y-axis motor to a*sin(t) and update the positions continuously for each value of t?
My workplace is lucky enough to have several EV3 kits and expansion kits. The EV3 was never perfect, it was way over priced, inaccurate, and its original visual language was horrid, but somehow we got by. The new block based programming gave EV3 a new and practical lease of life. It now visually resembles a conventional programming paradigm rather than a convoluted representation of it. Rather than just ending it, I wish Lego would support and enhance it, refining it into something that was both cheaper and more accurate. I hope that what replaces it is just as flexible but more accurate and affordable, especially when faced with cheap Micro controllers such as Arduino. What Lego needs to work on most is accessibility, so that it can be affordable to more than the middle classes and up, but also that its color detection, and rotational awareness. I was going to purchase an EV3 18 months ago for my kids, I'm so glad I did not as I would be raging right now.
My only problem is every generation has new connectors with no backwards compatibility which is real shame - lego as building platfrom was always about compatibility and interconnectability and they have got electronics part so wrong :/ ... i would be more inclined to buy new set if it did not ment i would need to "toss away" all those most expensive parts from the older one.
That's probably most people's biggest (valid) hesitation. It's the biggest double-edged sword. The new connectors allows the LEGO 51515 hardware to be smaller and more compact, but at the same time throws the backwards compatibility out the window. Big positives, with one big negative.
This video, in retrospect, seems like an apology for Lego. Personally, I find the minimal reverse compatibility of Mindstorms to be a big limitation. Instead of increasing compatibility with the Lego ecosystem, and widening the number of sensors and outputs for Mindstorms, each lego education release is separate and attempts to make previous versions obsolete. Lego has been spending incredible amounts on sustainability research into its plastics. But isn't one of the best ways to achieve this is to stop creating these short-termist releases and give users a reason to never throw away their bricks?
This is so unfortunate, EV3 got me into robotics and all the competitions that came along with it, a massive chunk of life is now retiring. Thanks EV3!
It's the circle of life, and now 51515 can be the robotics platform that brings the next generation of robotics enthusiasts into competitions and programming!
The miata/mr2 in the background just looks sad; and with the current news, I wouldn't blame the thing. But I have a feeling it always looked like that. (Also I remember I watched some of your videos for reasearch and messing around in the past, guess I'm here to stay this time (also also great content :D))
Haha thanks for noticing my little Miata! Rest assured that after a few quarts of fresh blinker fluid, he was feeling much better about the whole situation. I'm hoping you end up sticking around and keep enjoying the content!
Clubs will most likely be able to continue using their EV3s for a few more years to come. But I agree, when the time comes, it will be financially difficult to make the transition.
So far, FIRST of Tennessee is the only organizer (to my knowledge) that has stated they will retire the EV3 for FLL 2021. I presume that most districts will continue to allow the EV3 to compete, but I encourage you to reach out to your local organizer for clarification.
I am getting into MINDSTORMS with the 51515 set but I have a question. Can the motors break the pieces? For example when experimenting with a build or program and the motor goes past what is it supossed will it break the pieces near it.
I don't think the motors themselves pose too much of an issue to breaking pieces because they have a lower torque than previous motors. If you are interested in learning about how strong the new motors are, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/7Jw8GjT1v7s/видео.html
@Commenter Unfortunately you can't combine 51515 with any past MINDSTORMS just because the components are physically incompatible. As for combining NXT with EV3, check your local FIRST organization's rules, but it should be alright.
Sadly the EV3 is better in some aspects than Spike. Also they shouldn't have been removed from competition. they are forcing us to buy new products. when EV3 came out they didn't removed NXT or even RCX...
@@Carbon_ Note that FIRST of Tennessee is the only district to our knowledge to restrict the EV3 in the 2021 season, everywhere else seems to be allowing the EV3 so far. And FIRST of Tennessee actually softened their statement a bit in response to my video
I've been waiting for the new release to get a LEGO robotics product. I just found out about this while community when I became an FLL Jr coach by accident 😆 Seems like LEGO rolls over their robotics every seven(ish) years, and I came in at year 5, so I went all in with the 51515 set.
Hey friend. I am big into mindstorm and building oddball stuff. I was disappointed at the pics for the new set, but after viewing your intro into the set I want to ask, are we able to add technic pieces from our stash to expand this set? And you said 4 ports, can you use more than one hub in a build and either Bluetooth them or connect some other way than daisychain? More ports are my goal? Thanks I look forward to your next vid.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and questions! You can absolutely use any spare LEGO Technic you have to supplement what is included in the LEGO 51515 set; it uses just regular Technic elements that are the same as any other LEGO set. Currently, there is no (official) way to daisy chain, but my friend at AndysTechGarage figured out a clever solution to this, you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/DBp3nf8R7-s/видео.html I don't think most people will actually miss those two ports we lost ;)
Hi Kyle. For me personally, very sad news and this for two reasons: It has been only since a few months that I have been active with EV3 and I have grown very fond of it. Parallel to my first building efforts I discovered your tutorials and have found them to be very useful and very well explained (the math is sometimes complicated for me) and 2 days ago I joined your supporters on Patreon. Later on I saw your announcement. Will you stop, now, to make tutorials on EV3? This will even be worse news. I hope you will be ready, still, to help me solve this programming problem: In a plotter I command 2 large motors to do the X Y movements with the move tank block. Successfully drawing a square, an octangle and a 16 faces shape (the lengths of the faces defined by degrees) I noticed that, to achieve the changing angles, the motor speeds, on motors A and B, have to go up and down, alternatively, in a rhythm. Doing the right math I could go on and draw a 32 faces shape and so on. Willing to draw a circle (or a curve) I feel that I need a program containing a formula that continuously regulates the motors speeds up and down, + and - , in a rhythm and I need some factor to replace the degrees that define the size of the shape. Would you please advise on how to do this? Thanks a lot. Emanuel
Hello Emmanuel! I noticed your Patreon contribution, and I greatly appreciate it! Thank you! I hope to continue publishing some EV3 tutorials, but they will only come occasionally. I am going to be focusing my energy on 51515 and my own projects over the coming weeks. This decision actually has nothing to do with this announcement; I haven't published consistent EV3 tutorials in two years because I have already ready been covering the EV3 for four years, and I have covered just about every topic about the EV3 at this point.
I can certainly help answer your question: I think you are trying to draw a circle with your X/Y axes? To accomplish a circle, you will need the trigonometric functions sin(t) and cos(t). If you want to draw a circle of radius R, assign your motor's X-axis power value to R * cos(t) and your Y-axis power value to R * sin(t), where t is a degree value (from 0 to 360) or a radian value (from 0 to 2pi) that defines the period of your circle. You should vary both of these values simultaneously based on the same t-value. This will make your robot trace out a circle in the counterclockwise direction, starting at the "3-o'clock" (right most position). If you would like further reading on how to do this, check out trigonometric functions in the context of the unit circle: www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/unit-circle.html
Hmmm maybe? I feel like I might remember that too. I think Spike was indeed intended for a younger audience than the EV3, and LEGO 51515 targets a slightly more mature audience than Spike (even though Spike and 51515 are pretty similar).
In response to my inquiry to FIRSTinspires.org about the FIRST in Tennessee policy, they replied: "Hello David,
"Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate you brining this to our attention. We’ve reached out to the FIRST® in Tennessee team to clarify the terms of the EV3 retirement. You may now view the revised information by visiting the LEGO® Announcement About EV3 Retirement page [ www.tnfirst.org/post/ev3-retirement-announcement ]. "We hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions. Sincerely,
FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge Team Support" [FIRST LEGO League Challenge ] Specifically, that EV3 Retirement Announcement document says: 'In Tennessee, you will be able to continue using the EV3, NXT and RCX bricks for FLL events. "LEGO will continue to support the EV3 apps for 2 more years. Beyond that the retired apps will still be available for download for an additional 3 years. "Starting in Aug 2022, the Guided FLL Mission will only be available for SPIKE Prime however."
Need some suggestion. Please kindly advise. My kids are now 8 years old and play with Wedo 2.0 for few years. Next week i am going to buy both EV3 education full set and Spike prime education set. (EV3 get very big discount in Thailand). I plan to keep EV3 until they get fit to Spike prime. As learn that EV3 is going to retire. The question, should i still buy EV3 and keep for my kids?
Can we still use the software from the Lego site to program the EV3 though?? I live in Australia and want to continue to use them for personal projects, so if the software isn't getting shut down, Im good :D
@@Builderdude35 hey, I've got a lot of questions to ask because I'm buying a lego mindstorm ev3 soon. I have the ev3 programming software downloaded right now and thought it would be useless if they're going to shut down the software in 2023. Do you think it's worth to buy at this point of time?
I just now got 10 new kits. Will I still be able to use them in my classroom? Do you know where I can get free info on how to actually build the robots? I have seen a ton on how to program them, but I can't program unless I build them first. Can you or anyone else help me with this problem? Thank you
Hi. I'm new to Teaching Robotics to a grade 5/6/7 class and have acquired a class set of EV3 Robots. I know they are discontinued but want to still use them as they likely are still working and the software still seems to be supported. I think it's a great opportunity for the kids to learn some Robotics and Coding, but would love to hear your suggestions on where to start, what projects or challenges (I know there are a lot out there). Also, would you be interested in speaking to the class virtually to give them an idea what it took you to get to MIT?
I think the NXT was much more popular than the EV3, there were way more books published, free projects, and much more! Google search trends and RUclips search trends point to NXT era being more popular than EV3 era
That is an interesting perspective! I always thought (maybe assumed ) the EV3 was most popular as a result of FLL reaching its height during the EV3 era. Of course, that also leaves hobbyists and adult enthusiasts to be accounted for, so you may have a point.
Congratulations on your recent video on MINDSTORMS by the way, I just checked it out and you share some interesting insights that are a great complement to what I have shared already. I have been meaning to reach out for a while, but how do you feel about collaborating on a video regarding MINDSTORMS? I can reach out to you with more details if you are interested.
What do we do now? Use EV5. Its a Chinese EV3 ripoff. So before you buy it theres pros or cons. Pros: cheaper, looks the same, colored screen with touchscreen.. Cons: -2 buttons, its on Chinese, starter kit is quite expensive, long delivery. Aldo my box came demaged so your can be demaged too. Nothings insidde the box wad demaged so thats ok. Forgot ali express link but you may find it by yourself.
Maybe a matter of opinion, but Spike has its own merits for FLL use that should not be overlooked! Consider that the built in gyro for Spike Prime / Robot Inventor 51515 has more axes and is way better (less drift, more reliable) than the EV3's. Maybe I have an opportunity to convince you in future videos!
i started with RCX, then NXT and then EV3. As an engineer and mentor I like to see the evolution of new technology and new products. However, now that I am in academia I am concerned for those like me that have purchased many units in order to use them in class. I hope I can use them for at least the next 5 years so that I can have a good ROI. I am sure that the administration will not allow for me to purchase 40 units of the new generation anytime soon.
Most local FIRST organizers will continue to allow the EV3 to compete in FLL 2021. However, I still encourage you to reach out to your local organizer for clarification!
@@Builderdude35 I would like to see how to build your next-generation "Sirius" robot using the 51515 Robot Inventor parts. Some FLL teams (especially FIRST in Tennessee competitors) need to get familiar with the new robotics platform well in advance of the nominal Aug 2021 FLL season kickoff date.... :)
@@Builderdude35 It would be interesting to see the Scratch programming for "How To Detect Motor Stall", similar to these previous EV3-based tutorials: ruclips.net/video/6W4gqXdAeWs/видео.html and/or ruclips.net/video/7ptT2AEdbi4/видео.html :)
Here is a good video to help you decide -- ruclips.net/video/dAsYEPxGHUg/видео.html . If it were up to me, I would get the 51515 Robot Inventor Set ( www.lego.com/en-us/product/robot-inventor-51515 ).
I recommend contacting your local FIRST org to see if they will continue to allow the EV3. If so, you can wait. LEGO Edu customer service will continue supporting the EV3 until 2023 and the modules will be available in an archive.
Between 51515 and Spike Prime - they are pretty similar and you won't go wring with either. The main advantage of 51515 is that it includes 4 motors, but Spike is more commonly used in edu settings. Hope this helps!
I mean, this was inevitable since the announcement of the 51515 robot inventor. Personally my favorite is still the NXT! I have many great memories with the NXT and i still use it regularly to this day! I love programming in NXC with the NXT
Indeed, the winds of change spare no stone. I still have fond memories and sentimental attachment to the NXT as well, considering it was my first MINDSTORMS!
@@Builderdude35 I have used the EV3 for NASA mission prototypes and its so much better in a billion ways the wires of spike prime restrict it and it does not challenge people enough so it takes away the fun. I mean you would know it’s like comparing a high school lab to a MIT lab
My son made a lot of sample robots out of the EV3. He was sad to see this retirement, and still has the EV3. I expect no more updates, and replacement parts still available on stores other than LEGO Education. Do we get to keep it?
I still need two more EV3 kits for a big personal project I'm working on, so I'm probably not going to move on to the newest Mindstorms for a while, if ever. 51515/Spike Prime are fine for what they are, but they aren't what I'm looking for in a Mindstorms product. I might look at the next gen kit when it comes in approx. 7 years, though, we'll see. I just hope acquiring the rechargeable battery packs won't be horrifically difficult. Might have to prioritize those over the kits themselves, as while Amazon won't ship them to me, LEGO themselves will.
My most humble advice: whatever you need to buy, buy it now. prices will only go up as supply wanes. I'm half-afraid that this video may cause some panic buying and raise the price even more :P Rechargeable batteries will be extremely difficult to get ahold of, so prioritize those. Proceed judiciously, and good luck with your project!

My school uses Lego education we-do. They didn't see that it was discontinued and are still using it.
I can’t believe they discontinued the EV3. I’ve grown up on the NXT 1.0 and regret not buying an EV3.
Lego robot inventor set is here!
I just started writing an ev3 book, and all of a sudden this happened.
Unfortunate timing :(
This video, in retrospect, seems like an apology for Lego.
I learned to program the ev3 during FLL 5 years back. But I do agree it is time to retire it.
Hard to say it, but maybe it's for the best!
@@Builderdude35 i had some good memories with it. 😊
Me too :')
Do you think FLL Cargo Connect will allow us to use EV3?
Hi: I'm interested in learning to build robots on my own. Can you give me some advise on how to start. Appreciate your thoughts.
Pretty rough on fledgling clubs that just purchased eve3 and have small budgets.
Clubs will most likely be able to continue using their EV3s for a few more years to come. But I agree, when the time comes, it will be financially difficult to make the transition.
@@Builderdude35 will lego allow people to provide support for ev3?
@@Hawklyn1742 yes, until 2023
I got the ev3 after using a old NXT and now I also have the NXT im just lucky I got the ev3 way before it retired
We had 5 sets of ev3s...
But we can still use them, if we are not in Tennesse?
Contact your local FIRST org to see if they still plan to allow EV3. SO far I have only seen Tennessee disallow them for next season.
@@Builderdude35 yeah, they allow it.
They even allow nxt, so we are safe for a few years
I am relieved to hear that! My local district allowed NXT for a long time while the EV3 was released.
I have all the parts for the core set and the battery pack, how much should I sell it for?
But we can use it in FLL 2021 ?
So far, FIRST of Tennessee is the only organizer (to my knowledge) that has stated they will retire the EV3 for FLL 2021. I presume that most districts will continue to allow the EV3 to compete, but I encourage you to reach out to your local organizer for clarification.
I think I will grab second hand ev3 after finishing playing with robot inventor
Solid idea!
Will you miss the EV3? Are you ready to move on toe LEGO 51515 or Spike Prime? Let me know here!
@Commenter There's only 6 ports, motors are very weak, but i must admit everything else is better but they really shouldn't be removed
I just found out about this while community when I became an FLL Jr coach by accident 😆
Seems like LEGO rolls over their robotics every seven(ish) years, and I came in at year 5, so I went all in with the 51515 set.
Currently, there is no (official) way to daisy chain, but my friend at AndysTechGarage figured out a clever solution to this, you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/DBp3nf8R7-s/видео.html
I don't think most people will actually miss those two ports we lost ;)
It is really sad EV3 was replaced with a giant lego microbit
Are they still gonna be able to be programmable? Is the software still gonna be around?
Yes, software and support will be around until like 2023 I think
Oh geez! I Gotta get to that project fast then huh
@@jo-vh5bv Time's wasting! chop chop! :)
@@Builderdude35 LoL
are you sure they retired I just got a Lego Mindstorms ev3 kit for Christmas
can you still download the software? That's all I really want to know.
Didn't Lego say the Spike was created to close the gap between EV3 and Boost ?
Hmmm maybe? I feel like I might remember that too. I think Spike was indeed intended for a younger audience than the EV3, and LEGO 51515 targets a slightly more mature audience than Spike (even though Spike and 51515 are pretty similar).
What is the speed rpm of medium motors in spike prime? It is the same as EV3? bc the large motors are very similar as I saw.
In response to my inquiry to FIRSTinspires.org about the FIRST in Tennessee policy, they replied:
"Hello David,
"Thank you for contacting us.

Specifically, that EV3 Retirement Announcement document says:
'In Tennessee, you will be able to continue using the EV3, NXT and RCX bricks for FLL events.
"LEGO will continue to support the EV3 apps for 2 more years. Beyond that the retired apps will still be available for download for an additional 3 years.
"Starting in Aug 2022, the Guided FLL Mission will only be available for SPIKE Prime however."
WE STILL HAVE THE EV3 IN MY SCHOOL :D
Need some suggestion. Please kindly advise.
My kids are now 8 years old and play with Wedo 2.0 for few years.
Next week i am going to buy both EV3 education full set and Spike prime education set. (EV3 get very big discount in Thailand). I plan to keep EV3 until they get fit to Spike prime.
As learn that EV3 is going to retire.
The question, should i still buy EV3 and keep for my kids?
I already make decision to buy Spike Prime Core set and Extension set.
Then wait for next Gen of Mind-storm education 😄😄
Can we still use the software from the Lego site to program the EV3 though?? I live in Australia and want to continue to use them for personal projects, so if the software isn't getting shut down, Im good :D
Yes, at least until 2023.
@@Builderdude35 hopefully longer.
@@Builderdude35 and I don't really know if they can shutdown the programming software if I have it downloaded.
I only found this out after realizing I couldn't find the EV3 app anymore :"(
The Ev3 isn't retired, its the shipping issues in the Pacific Ocean, and the Ev3 are actually still manufactured!
I hate the new lego mindstorms as it has a dot matrix display
Builderdude35 Yeah sure I’m interested! I would love to collaborate with you! Can you please send me an email?
What do we do now? Use EV5. Its a Chinese EV3 ripoff. So before you buy it theres pros or cons. Pros: cheaper, looks the same, colored screen with touchscreen.. Cons: -2 buttons, its on Chinese, starter kit is quite expensive, long delivery. Aldo my box came demaged so your can be demaged too. Nothings insidde the box wad demaged so thats ok.
Forgot ali express link but you may find it by yourself.
The EV3 will always remain in our hearts! Until next time, sleep in peace...
Absolutely! The EV3 was special and it will always have a place in our hearts and minds!
I have NXT 2.0 ))
WE NEED MORE PORTS!
It's just like an Apple update, somehow ports were lost in the process :P
Spike is better for home use.
But EV3 is 10 times better for FLL. 😢
8 sensors vs 7...
Maybe a matter of opinion, but Spike has its own merits for FLL use that should not be overlooked! Consider that the built in gyro for Spike Prime / Robot Inventor 51515 has more axes and is way better (less drift, more reliable) than the EV3's.
Maybe I have an opportunity to convince you in future videos!
i have EV3 and NXT Bricks Motor and Controller
Even the ev3 apps going to Retire?
I think they will stop supporting them in 2023, based on their announcement. Not sure whether they will stop making them available to download.
Thanks. If you get more info then please share
@@mylegoworld7540 absolutely! Keep your eyes peeled for more video updates on the channel!
i started with RCX, then NXT and then EV3.
Rest assured, that you will be able to get at least a few more years our of the EV3!
my Team are using EV3 for FLL 2021
Most local FIRST organizers will continue to allow the EV3 to compete in FLL 2021. However, I still encourage you to reach out to your local organizer for clarification!
Thanks EV3!
??? Im confused
So for this I can not install the programmer
soo will you make any tutorials ??
Absolutely! I still have new tutorial videos every Thursday! Some of them for EV3, some for the new LEGO 51515
Do you have any ideas for tutorials you want to see?
@@Builderdude35 I would like to see how to build your next-generation "Sirius" robot using the 51515 Robot Inventor parts. Urgent question from a high school teacher: should my school now get Spike Prime sets or the Robot Inventor sets?
HELP MY MOM JUST ORDERED ME EV3, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO CODE IT? after June the 30th will mindstorms ev3 shut down the coding program?
You can get it from eBay
Noooooooo. I love that kit not fair at all the spike prime is not advanced enough. Why ???????
I'm curious to know, what about it do you think is not advanced enough?
@@Builderdude35 I have used the EV3 for NASA mission prototypes and its so much better in a billion ways the wires of spike prime restrict it and it does not challenge people enough so it takes away the fun. I mean you would know it’s like comparing a high school lab to a MIT lab
My son made a lot of sample robots out of the EV3. He was sad to see this retirement, and still has the EV3. I expect no more updates, and replacement parts still available on stores other than LEGO Education. Do we get to keep it?
If your question is do we keep the robot: of course we keep it lol why wouldn’t we be able to not keep it.
We could also move on to using raspberry pis!
EV3 had a pretty janky gyro and a poor LCD display. I hope the next gen robot addresses this.
Oh no...
