So, to be clear, all those sounds under Library can't be played from the Hub? Thanks for the great in-depth review btw. Most "reviewers" just unbox the parts and that's it.
Actually, the sound library is divided in two sections “sounds on hub” and “more sounds”. Only the sounds that are under the “sounds on hub” category can be played from the actual hub itself. Unfortunately you can’t make the robot say proper words anymore, but he can still play music, beeps,
What about gyro sensor of the new set? I mean, I am quite disappointed that the set doesn't come up with an instruction of a self-balancing robot. Does anyone know if the gyro sensor of 51515's "intelligent brick" is fit for such a design? - or is it too slow, or inaccurate, or otherwise unfit for such a task?
Yeah, I’d like to, but I’m really clueless when it comes to that stuff. I would even know how to begin. I can build the model, but after that I don’t know anything about the programming/getting existing programs. Do you think you would ever make a video on this?
Really detailed and well built video ! I seriously hope that daisy chaining will be implemented. Any news regarding extension cables ? (those are too small for large built)
First of all, thank you very, very much! This review took me a very loooooong time to make. Second, yes I also really hope that daisy chaining will come soon with a software update. Third, I believe you can actually use third party extension cables. Here's one: pv-productions.com/product/powered-up-extension-cable/
I actually got one of these from Santa last Christmas and it was working fine until I synced with with my phone, and I was using a fire tablet last time, but when I linked it together it literary bricked, my brick. Haven't gotten help on fixing it 😕
Are technic pieces fragile? I remember getting Nxt 2 but after a few builds a lot of the pieces broke, mainly the ones were you connect axles and the small black pins.
As a newbiew to mindstorms I have the advantage of ignorance to the past platforms. I like that the smaller size of the control module. Though I don't like the new connectors. I have seen third party converters about but I wish Lego supplied a backward compatibility or adapter for Ev3 and power function modules.

Great review. Loved your enthusiasm and comparisons to the past versions of Lego robotics. You did a great job making your own conclusions. I was curious what you would think after your earlier video where you discuss the criticisms. You were right to try it yourself first.
is it possible to use the remote controll on the phone without being in the program itself? like just by running the program on the hub and opening a controller on the phone
I found that my Mindstorms 51515 hub scratches very easily. The plastic of the front of the hub seems to be very soft and can be easily scratched with a finger nail - which is not typical of any Lego part or previous versions of Mindstorms (I have NXT and EV3). Has anyone faced that, or maybe I got a hub with some defect?
The reason the EV3 boots so slowly is its booting an entire operating system. It runs on the GNU/Linux system, meaning it has to load a bunch of things before launching. Simply put, the EV3 boots up as an entire PC, which was intended so you could boot custom firmware from a MicroSD card.
Actually, the main reason why it boots so slow is due to the incredibly slow ARM9 cpu. You simply can’t have a sophisticated operating system work together with a really slow processor. New hub runs microPython, which is much better for slow processors. My computer usually powers on much faster than the ev3, my iPhone powers up much faster than ev3. That’s because they have extremely fast processors to compensate for the more demanding OS
My least favorite part of the set is the fact that it doesn't play noises itself, and that all sounds come from the phone. I love almost everything else about the set. Definitely one of the better robots LEGO has made in my opinion :)
On a phone call with Lego support the guy helping me told me that Lego won't be releasing another mindstorms kit for a while. Robot inventor is the EV3 replacement. He also said that there won't be any future software updates to robot inventor/spike prime to allow hub-to-hub bluetooth communication and they won't be implementing daisy-chaining. There's a chance that they told me the wrong info.
@@Unbrickme I think Lego is aiming at a younger audience with Robot Inventor. The user experience is a lot better but there is less functionality for more advanced builds. It's probably a strategic decision since Vex recently released their V5 system and it seems to be doing really well in highschools which was the target audience of EV3.
I like pretty much every aspect of the 51515 more than the EV3 besides daisy chaining. Daisy chaining really seems like a crucial feature and I don’t understand why lego decided to remove it. I’m still optimistic that lego will add official support for daisy chaining, or maybe a third party can come up with a daisy chaining method for the new system. Ultimately 51515 is meant to REPLACE the ev3, so I would assume that there is a future software update coming to support daisy chaining. The new powered up system seems to get updates once every couple months to add new fundamental features while keeping the hardware the same
@@Unbrickme I hope you're right that a future software update will add daisy-chaining. Unfortunately the datasheet specifies that you can only have one bluetooth classic connection or four bluetooth low energy connections. Brick to brick pairing would require bluetooth classic so it would limit daisy-chaining to only one additional brick. The USB port of the new robot inventor can't be used as a USB host so it won't be possible to daisy-chain the bricks using USB. I highly doubt that Lego would let you use the IO ports for daisy-chaining since connecting ports on two different bricks would lead to a short circuit if both bricks aren't configured perfectly. So at best they will add bluetooth classic daisy-chaining but only with one additional brick.
I looked at the specifications of the hub and I always assumed that the reason it supported up to four BLE connections was for hub-hub daisy chaining. Since there’s four connections one can be the host while the other hubs merely act as controllers of sorts. There could be 5 hubs, one main hub and the other 4 just control the motors/get inputs from sensors, sort of how the Powered Up system works. If daisy chaining cannot be done via Bluetooth low energy then lego definitely will not add daisy chaining. I always assumed that the BLE capability was created for daisy chaining, while Bluetooth classic is only used by the main hub to keep a connection to your computer. I’ve been using the 51515 ever since I first got it in October and from what I know there’s not even a way to connect 2 hubs together natively without some work arounds, since the software for scratch 3.0 doesn’t even have the Bluetooth commands “send message” and “receive message” so in some ways the new system is worse than not just the EV3, but the NXT also. To me, mindstorms is always the king of robotics since while the competition may have better specifications, Lego Mindstorms will always have the lego Technic building system
When I install Lego Mindstorms Robot Inventor app for my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge working on Android it works fine but I can 't now play any audio mp3 files on my phone becouse everytime I choose a mp3 file to play Lego Mindstorms app starts.

@@sokratesz I just downloaded the MacOS version. Looks very good. The clincher for me is the ability to program it in Python, which is a lovely programming language.
@@Unbrickme Now I get it. LEGO wants to do the same thing with their motors as they did with CCBS: combine their kinda special themes with System. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. I am now able to build a robot train, robotize my Technic excavator, basically swap between Technic, Mindstorms, and System... Man, it's incredible. I didn't like Powered Up at first, but now it all makes sense. SO COOL. I love the new Mindstorms set.
Oh yeah I remember that app! I think the benefit of the new mindstorms is mainly PU compatibility and you can create better controllers in the mindstorms app for example
Seems like this new one is even cheaper than the previous 2 nxt, at least for my country This one cost $529.90 and if i can remember the NXT cost around $1k and the EV3 is around $600+
Man, I've played EV3 for 3 years and unfortunately, LEGO decided to ditch the cable for me I'm disappointed that I can't use the system through the new Mindstorm
It comes with a cable but not a power brick. Personally I just charge it from my laptop. It’s safer since most of my power bricks have a high watt output

Actually, the sound library is divided in two sections “sounds on hub” and “more sounds”. Only the sounds that are under the “sounds on hub” category can be played from the actual hub itself. Unfortunately you can’t make the robot say proper words anymore, but he can still play music, beeps,
And thank you very very much!
It is perfect for such a task! People have already made plenty of such robots

I’ve had ev3 for years but I don’t know how to use it so it just sits around
Try creating some of the most basic programs
Yeah, I’d like to, but I’m really clueless when it comes to that stuff. I would even know how to begin. I can build the model, but after that I don’t know anything about the programming/getting existing programs. Do you think you would ever make a video on this?
I’ll consider it, although my goal is to make videos on the new system, not ev3
@@Unbrickme yeah, I thought you’d say that. Well do you know anyone on RUclips who has videos about ev3?

How do we get the app to save programs we program ourselves? Any tips or advice
The Mac App Store or the windows App Store have the app
Really detailed and well built video !
I seriously hope that daisy chaining will be implemented.
Any news regarding extension cables ? (those are too small for large built)
First of all, thank you very, very much! This review took me a very loooooong time to make. Second, yes I also really hope that daisy chaining will come soon with a software update. Third, I believe you can actually use third party extension cables. Here's one: pv-productions.com/product/powered-up-extension-cable/
@@Unbrickme Is it possible to control multiple hubs in the app and use code? It seems that would eliminate need for cable daisy chaining.
I actually got one
of these from
Santa last
Christmas
and it was
working
fine
until I synced with with my phone, and I was using a fire tablet last time, but when I linked it together it literary bricked, my brick. Haven't gotten help on fixing it 😕
I knew I wanted it beforehand, but now... Damn! I can't wait to experiment with python and combine it with technic
That’s the spirit!
Really good review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent review thanks. We have the old RCX Mindstorms kit. Is it possible to use the parts from that kit with this new Robot Inventor kit?
Great review. Keep up the good work!
Much appreciated!
Are technic pieces fragile? I remember getting Nxt 2 but after a few builds a lot of the pieces broke, mainly the ones were you connect axles and the small black pins.
You must have been extremely demanding of them. They are very strong pieces.
What does it cost
Amazing review 👍👏 keep up your hard work 👏👌I'll definitely get this set 😉👍
As a newbiew to mindstorms I have the advantage of ignorance to the past platforms. I like that the smaller size of the control module. Though I don't like the new connectors. I have seen third party converters about but I wish Lego supplied a backward compatibility or adapter for Ev3 and power function modules.
yeah I wish that it was backwards compatible with EV3 and NXT sensors/motors
Thank you! Excellent video! Amazing what you can do with these Lego robots. I have built a whole home AI lab using the previous Lego EV3 robot, project at the Xzistor LAB.
Wow you made a whole AI lab that’s awesome! I really wanna learn to create some machine learning algorithms in python
@@Unbrickme I worked in python before but this EV3 Robot lab uses Java. We even gave the Lego robot some simple emotions and intelligence! Massive fun! Here is a link to the project: www.xzistor.com/build-your-own-ai-lab/
I'm totally new to mindstorm but have Lego technic sets. It's years since I did any robotics so want to start again. What do you recommend for me?
hello is it possible to use some part of your vidéo, in mine? i would like to do the beginner vidéo, i dont intend to do as much as you, just including somme footings would be interesting!
As long as you give full credit to me, you can use part of my footage
@@Unbrickme haha i wouldn't ask you if my intention wasn't to give full credit and link to your video! French are bad with english, but i think your video is clear enough, even for french people! thanks a lot!
I would love to see if it would be possible to make a remake of Alpha Rex with this new kit.
I have already done exactly that :) ruclips.net/video/UD6skiXjsGc/видео.html I have made free building instructions and programs you can download
Great review. Loved your enthusiasm and comparisons to the past versions of Lego robotics. You did a great job making your own conclusions. I was curious what you would think after your earlier video where you discuss the criticisms. You were right to try it yourself first.
Thank you very much
Great video
Thank you very very much! Will you be getting this set?
is it possible to use the remote controll on the phone without being in the program itself? like just by running the program on the hub and opening a controller on the phone
Good morning
I only did lego techniques
Mind Storm is also likely to be Gemini
It's amazing.
no answer
Nice and complete review, congratulations!
Thanks! I hat do you think of this new set?
@@Unbrickme since I've got my hands on it a few weeks ago I'm in love.
A few weeks ago? Did lego send it to you?
Yes! :)
That’s so awesome!!! Are you part of their ambassador network?
I found that my Mindstorms 51515 hub scratches very easily.
The plastic of the front of the hub seems to be very soft and can be easily scratched with a finger nail - which is not typical of any Lego part or previous versions of Mindstorms (I have NXT and EV3).
Has anyone faced that, or maybe I got a hub with some defect?
out of curiosity where did you buy the nxt or ev3 kit? wherever i look online theyre ridiculously expensive/its retired on the lego website.
@@ibolyanagy544 I bought them in the past - in 2007 and 2013, respectively.
Actually it does play the sounds itself. The hub has a built in speaker
@@Unbrickme Oh, that's good! I didn't know that.
I placed my bet on blast!!
Nice!!!
How come there was no livestream? And do you know when the videos coming?
Because I lost my video capture card so I couldn’t livestream. Anyways video will definitely come today in several hours, apologies

Hi Unbrickme, I was wondering if the LEGO spike prime Force sensor is compatible with the Lego mindstorms robot inventor set?
Yes
@@Unbrickme thank you, happy new
On a phone call with Lego support the guy helping me told me that Lego won't be releasing another mindstorms kit for a while. Robot inventor is the EV3 replacement. He also said that there won't be any future software updates to robot inventor/spike prime to allow hub-to-hub bluetooth communication and they won't be implementing daisy-chaining. There's a chance that they told me the wrong info.
No update for hub-to-hub daisy chaining? Oh man that’s not good. I loved daisy chaining on EV3
How fast is the rpm speed of the motors of the new Mindstorms ?m
Not sure
How much slots does the hub have
Slots? Like ports or?
maybe?
Nice review! I am defiantly going to get it
Thank you very much!
Best lego system ever
mindstorms is epic!
When I install Lego Mindstorms Robot Inventor app for my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge working on Android it works fine but I can 't now play any audio mp3 files on my phone becouse everytime I choose a mp3 file to play Lego Mindstorms app starts.
Try using the app on your computer
Hi! Thank you for your review. A few questions:
- Can you connect up to 6 motors to the unit if you buy separate motors?
- Is it by now possible to make the units talk to each other?
- Does the software run on non mobile devices?
Yes, yes, and yes. The reason I used mobile in the review is because I filmed it earlier than release date and only the mobile app was available
@@Unbrickme Thanks! I'm looking to buy one soon. Is there any indication that LEGO will expand the current powered up line further?
@@sokratesz I just downloaded the MacOS version. Looks very good. The clincher for me is the ability to program it in Python, which is a lovely programming language.
Is the hub compatible with Powered Up motors? It seems like I finally fully get the premise of this system
Yes it’s fully compatible with powered up motors
@@Unbrickme Now I get it. LEGO wants to do the same thing with their motors as they did with CCBS: combine their kinda special themes with System. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. I am now able to build a robot train, robotize my Technic excavator, basically swap between Technic, Mindstorms, and System... Man, it's incredible. I didn't like Powered Up at first, but now it all makes sense.
SO COOL.
I love the new Mindstorms set.
The ev3 can also be controlled in the phone by bluetooth.
The app is called LEGO Commander
Oh yeah I remember that app! I think the benefit of the new mindstorms is mainly PU compatibility and you can create better controllers in the mindstorms app for example
I think the hub and sensors and motors are the same of spike prime

is 51515 motor able to use in EV3 or EV3 motor compatible with 51515?
No, but you can use all the powered up motors with 51515
Do you need to buy a charger separately?
It comes with a cable but not a power brick. Personally I just charge it from my laptop. It’s safer since most of my power bricks have a high watt output
