  • Decided to try something a bit different by reviewing 2 similar games at once as opposed to doing them separately. I know I left some small things out here and there, but the point of this video was give undecided players a overview of both games, to help determine which one would better suit them.
    Music used:
    Dauntless OST - 100% danger theme.

    Since people are still managing to find this video 2 years later I wanted to throw this out there, Dauntless was sold off to a Chinese company that doesn't exactly have the best track record in maintaining games, if you want something free its more than enough to keep you occupied, I would look carefully at the state of the game before deciding to throw money at it. I stopped playing the game mere months after this video. If money isn't an issue Monster Hunter is obviously the better game, I timed my "review" horribly as iceborne wasnt out on PC yet, and I brushed it off as just 'a few more monsters'. The iceborne expansion is absolutely worth it.

      Exactly the reason I made this video, for someone who doesn't know any better they might just assume that these are two very similar games with different graphic styles. For instance I don't really dabble in MOBAs, so to me Dota and league are the same games with different coats of paint, but I'm sure thats far from the truth

    Dauntless is like a training wheels version of Monster Hunter.
    Very easy to get used to and honestly an overall easy game to understand.
    Hitting boops is satisfying and makes hunts super easy,
    builds in dauntless consist of power hungry damage builds,
    And on top of all that the game is a free to play Monster Hunter with live service which is nice.
    Monster hunter on the other hand is the big papa of it’s own genre.
    Multiple builds consisting of all types of situations,
    Amazing DLC that was worth way more than 40$,
    10/10 Monsters that have provided such amazing fights and amazing returning monsters too.
    And top of all that, Monster Hunter world isn’t even done providing content, literally two more years of on going additions of new monsters, new weapons, armor, layered sets, events, and much more. If anything, Monster Hunter isn’t even a close tie against Dauntless it were being honest.

      I completely agree with you in all ways and I'm a huge mh fan that started in gen 3 when I had no idea what I was doing. but I'll say that comparing dauntless to monster hunter is really unfair since monster hunter has years of experience since monster hunter is a series of games compared to the one dauntless. And mhw has no problems in finding new monster designs since they can look back at the hundreds of monster designs, take for example namielle who basically has the skeleton of chamelios from a previous game. They don't even have to make new designs since they can add any of the hundreds of monsters into mhw

    • @smart7927
      @smart7927 4 года назад +10

      It’s understandable as to why you would think Dauntless and MHW can’t be compared. Without a doubt Dauntless does have its own form of having fun with the same genre. With that being said, it’s not like you can’t really compare the two, they both have various things that make them unique but that’s why people make debates about which game has better elements and features, but that’s also the reason why it’s such a poor argument because MHW already takes the crown when it comes down to it. Free or not.

      Yeah in all fairness, Monster Hunter has much more available playstyles, more content, a shit ton of customization in the fashion and stat department, and (In my opinion) has many features that are similar to Dauntless, only, kinda better. The combat is more enjoyable, the monsters are more diverse and immersive, and a ton of other things that just make Monster Hunter superior. I feel like Dauntless is just Monster Hunter World on easy mode, and from what i can tell, the everything just seems, slower, while also taking aspects of monster hunter, and just having them in there too.

    Yeah okay this man's never used a Lance as god intended. It's the most mobile weapon next to the Insect Glaive and almost as fast as the Dual Blades. The "tanky" aspect is only really there to be used for counters, which just means *more* offense.

    • @skeletonwar4445
      @skeletonwar4445 4 года назад +18

      @@briarfolly3764 I mean... that just shows me you got no idea how Lance works. The charge is the slowest attack you can do. Sure you move fast after some point, but the actual attack is slow and you only use it for following a limp or when the monster is downed/trapped.
      The basic triple poke is among the fastest combos in the entire ass game my man. The only problem with it that I can understand people having is that it's repetitive and too simple, since it's just three stabs and then either a reset or a follow up. All of Lance's attacks are very fast, even the slow ones like charge and counter are relatively fast.
      The Lance has problems, but speed is definitely not one of them
      And don't even start with "standing around in a single spot just blocking and block-poking." Like yeah, obviously that's a shit fucking playstyle, which is why you don't do it. that's like playing Hunting Horn only to stand at the sideline and play music without ever attacking.

      @@briarfolly3764 In terms of attack speed, Lance is one of the fastest in the game. Not Dual Blades fast, but pretty close. It's probably on par with SnS. In terms of mobility, Lance is different, but definitely not slow. It's the hops. You have to master how to hop around with the weapon. When you do, the weapon type is very mobile. The movement isn't as quick as SnS's nearly instant sprint options or Dual Blades' Demon Mode, but the fact that you can block while you're moving means you can move in situations other people can't or shouldn't, so you're generally one of the most mobile weapon options.
      Newbies can mistake the lancers being in the monster's face as because of immobility. This is not the case. Indeed, it takes a good deal of mobility to stay in monster's faces because many of them move around so much. Lancers stay in the monster's face because that is how you play the Lance. You go for your target part and you stay in your location whatever the monster does to try to shake you off or throw you off. Slower weapons include the Heavy Bowgun, the Greatsword, the Charge Blade, the Gunlance, and the Switchaxe. It says a lot that something like the Charge Blade or the Switchaxe are decidedly slower than the Lance, since they're not really that slow.

    One thing though. If you play dauntless I highly recommend giving monster hunter a try, but i don't believe many MH players will start playing dauntless
    Edit: I finally tried dauntless. And in short, I didn't like it. In mh each fight feels like an intense battle with the monster to se who prevails. In dauntless the feel is completely different. The most obvious thing i noticed at the start is how quickly the monster dies. It's not really an intense battle more like farming where you go from one end of the island to the other mindlessly killing 10 monsters and then retreating from the quest. The weapon depth is nowhere to be found. I pretty much mastered each weapon after the 2nd hunt with it and got bored using it. There is also the fact that you can't play the game single player. The usual hunt is like the mhw guiding lands. Basically you drop in and hunt the random monster that spawns, then you change locations and hunt another then go back. But all of this is done with other people. If you couldn't really get the feel of an epic battle between you and the monster because of how the monsters are (they also attack less, and have less variety in attacks) you definitely can't get it when you match with 5 other people every hunt. And you can't go solo no matter what. The most fun I had was when I went for a monster far away from other people, but they would also join soon and ruin the feel. I do enjoy multiplayer but beeing forced into it isn't a good thing. If i were to summarize, dauntless is mh lite. With worse graphics (they really didn't bother me but they are worse) worse monster design from a combat perspective: less variety of attacks, some monsters like to sit still and let you vail on them at some points but maybe that's just beginner monsters (not gonna find out). They die super fast compared to mh. 7 weapons, all of them pretty unique but lacking in depth. And the stupid forced multiplayer. Just why? That is such a bad feature. Well that's it for my lil rant. Have fun :)

      well, G rank has always been released as a new game, so if you bought MH4 before MH4U, you'll have to buy a new game. After MH4U releases, there's no reason to get MH4, it's the base game plus G rank. Same with Iceborne, just happens that with the way its on steam, it's treated as DLC so you have to purchase both the base game and Iceborne even after Iceborne launches (there is a package deal in which you get both at the price of what the base game was originally, so basically buying just one game)

    I've played both monster Hunter and dauntless. And honestly, they're their own games. Monster Hunter has a deep history with over a decade of experience in creating a world, monsters, environment and everything needed to make you stop thinking in terms of a gamer and in the mindset of a Hunter. Dauntless is new but checks off the basic prerequisites that you need for a monster Hunter game. The thing is, there are behemoths, elemental variants, easier upgrade progression, a simplified Skill slot system via cells and a variety of different weapons to keep you interested including exotic variants of each weapon type. Both have their pros and cons. But in the end, they're both amazing games in their own right.
    And to be honest, my first monster Hunter was MH4U. And my God did this game kick my ass for a good bit. I got stuck on the great Jaggi, Nerscylla, seltas queen and various monsters throughout my learning the game, the weapons, the world and my personal playstyle. I would honestly play MH4U right now if someone asked me to. It's the perfect game to introduce beginner hunters to as well. I've played world and honestly while I enjoy world, I don't think new players realize how busted it is to give new hunters weapons with blast right from the get go. Vets will understand.
    Dauntless has monsters with different elements which you would think "oh they fight the same so meh!" And that's when you waste your first revive after you get laid out. Honestly I could go on and on but to summarize, both games are AWESOME! Sometimes people need to remember that in the end, wether it's elder dragons or a rezakiri and shroud, we're all players that love killing monsters because we love the challenge it brings us.

Poison which poisons the monster and in some cases weakens elder dragons. And blast which does flat damage to a monster and ignores body part defense. To put into perspective, say you fight a jagras that has 1200 hp. And each blast proc does between 100-150 damage. If you were using a fast weapon like sword and shield, you would only need 5 to 7 procs to kill the monster. That's excluding damage your weapons already doing.

    • @XorsosedutoX
      @XorsosedutoX 4 года назад +6

      Dauntless is simple, it's goofy, but it's fun. It throws you pretty much into the big monster fights which are fast paced and rewarding.. People love it because it's exactly what it's meant to be: a free to play, quick paced hack and slash. Although the idea comes from Monster Hunter, in my opinion it's only the shell which is similar. It's like comparing Battlefield with Fortnite (it really does remind you of Fortnite).
      Monster Hunter, instead, is a hardcore, complicated game that builds on top of micromanaging and the creatures' biology. As many people say, there is a moment in MH fans when the game just clicked, and it was love from then on. The world's depth is what people love: seeing how monsters act and react with their surroundings. It is more, as the name says, a fantasy hunting simulator.
      That said, I am a really old school MH player, so I may be biased and I personally find Daunless more repetitive than MHW, but it's just because the game style doesn't suit me. So yeah, everyone should try both and it makes sense that both games have a fanbase, although we are usually at each other's throats haha

    • @joevaldez4889
      @joevaldez4889 4 года назад +1

      Because it's good at what it does, get to the monster fight deal damage, dodge attacks, boop monsters, enter mechanics, and kill the monster in a very fast way, giving you more time to do more things around you or other than the game. Like me, i play it at my work break so i can relax. I play both tho, i play MHW at home on weekends, it just eats more time for 1 fight and story, Dauntless is just different, they just have the same 1 goal, kill the monster.

    Before watching, I can tell you with complete certainty MHW is far superior in ALMOST every aspect. The monsters are just bosses, not interactable AT ALL. They don't feel alive. While MHW doesn't have great storyline, it's still good and adds a depth to the game dauntless barely has. You're entire playstyle of even the same weapon could be completely different to another just by your skills in the armour and decos. there are also far more weapon choices, allowing greater freedom and more likely to find a weapon that suits you best. I've played both with a friend, enjoyed both but after MHW dautless just feels like a wannabe monster hunter that can never hope to compare, making enough different that it's not the same, but still a copy

    • @fenncarr5602
      @fenncarr5602 4 года назад

      Decos make so much customisation it's insane, not to mention you can use layered armour, and colour your armour. Back to decorations. Each armour piece has slots of varying levels. You can fit decos into these slots, which can add to skills already in your armour pieces or other skills you don't already have. If you use a certain amount of armour pieces from the same set, that can activate a set bonus. Say you use 3 pieces or teostra armour. You now have an ability where you don't lose sharpness on critical hits. These skills can massively alter your playstyle.

For example, deviljho in high rank with 1 player will usually be in the 8,000 to 9,000 range, while 3 players is around 20k. The amount of damage you deal is still the same but there is a bigger pool to drain from.

Turf wars: turf wars are when 2 monsters have a fight this can do extra damage to the monster your hunting and gives you a better chance. Environmental things. In certain areas, using your slinger can knock a bunch of things to deal extra damage. For example in the ancient forest, in one part of the map there are boulders hanging from vines, if you hit it with your slinger they will drop and if they land on the monster deal tons of damage. Just a side note about eating before a hunt: you can eat once you’re actually in the quest. There’s a little stone bench in the camp where the handler will cook up whatever meal ya want. Just in case you forget to eat before. Honestly I’ve put way more time into MHW than almost any other game. I love it. Also MHW has a semi simlar system to the trials in the form of arena quests. You get a set load out and try to kill the designated monster as fast as possible. It’s a nice little thing for speed runners and even has gear tied to it, some it pretty damn good. Anywho, just wanted a few more things thrown in there that I felt were left out, good vid and thank you for not saying they’re the same 😂 these games are almost in different genres in terms of gameplay.

    I've played both games and dauntless is almost nothing compared to monster hunter world. Dauntless is just boring and I'm never satisfied when I kill a monster. The entire map of dauntless feels dead while mhw has the environment filled with monsters, endemic life, and environmental traps you can use against the monsters. The dauntless combat is too simple for me, each weapon feels like you just using the same basic combo while avoiding the monsters attacks that are so slow that they make my grandma look fast. Some of the mhw weapons are pretty simple (great sword) however you have to put a little more thought into your attacks then pressing the same botton over and over again. The monsters in dauntless shouldn't be allowed to be compared to the monsters of mhw. They just sit a one place in the map and wait for you to fight it while the monsters in world feel like living creatures who hunt, eat, drink, and sleep like a normal animal would. The monsters in mhw also have some cool interactions with each other. The only two things that dauntless does better is that it's free to play and you can play with people across other platforms.

    I'm just going to go ahead and say it...encourage new titles! All it means is you have more variation in gameplay, choice and monsters to hunt. If you don't like a game that's fine, but there is always a chance that something better comes out of it. More competition means Monster Hunter has to stand it's ground and prove it's the best with new content and awesomeness.
    While Monster Hunter World has more content, depth and "better" graphics (subjective to the style). There is no denying that it is the better monster/behemoth hunting game.
    But...
    Dauntless is still only at the begging of it's journey in the genre (compared to an entire franchise in it) and is still finding itself as a game. The devs understand the game has problems and already have plans to rework the weapon mechanics as well as the cell system, which will most likely change the pacing of the hunts and the effort required to master the game. Visually it does look flat in places and they can definitely do much more with the style but islands are looking better with every new addition and I'm sure there will be some great views in the future.
    Both are aimed at players who love the challenge of hunting a new monster. But while Monster Hunter World pretty much requires dedication before you can comfortably play it casually, Dauntless is geared towards casual gameplay. You are intended to be able to drop in for a quick hunt without feeling strained for time, while still providing the challenge of learning each behemoths fight mechanics so you don't get one-shot by a glorified lightning bug or the swan-dive of a fiery guerilla. Although right now the hunts are a little too quick at max lvl to be honest.
    I have been playing Dauntless since it launched and only recently picked up Monster Hunter World (Damn that price tag!). I enjoy both games a lot...for different reasons.

    I feel some people miss the point. I see comments saying "this will last longer" but no one knows how long a game will last, not even the owners of the game know until they check or shut it down themselves(or maybe someone gets sued for copyright or something[then again that never stopped fortnite ]). So saying "this will last longer" isn't accurate at all. It's all about play style,difficulty,your choice of variety,simplicity,basically just preference in general. I'm glad you made this video to clear this out for others on the fence

      Yeah, alot of people are missing the point. I literally say at the start of the video I'm not trying to prove one game is better or worse, I'm simply trying to un-muddy the water since people dismiss dauntless as a monster Hunter knock off (as if monster Hunter is the only game allowed to exist in it's genre). And looking through the comments people still continue to say that. People are allowed to like and defend there favorite game, it's the dismissiveness that gets under my skin.

      The Cyborg Waffle it’s just like what happened when fortnite came out, everyone gripes how it was just a free to play knockoff of PUBG. But now that the game has been out for over two years and everyone and their grandma knows about it, it’s easy to see that while both fortnite and PUBG are battle royal games, each has their own specific unique gameplay elements that set it apart from the rest. Same genre, different games. That’s what I enjoy about playing new games because I like to see how a company puts their own take on the original formula. It keeps things interesting and adds variety.

I'm glad to see more variety in this very small genre of games, but they have a lot of work to do if they want to even get close to what monhun has to offer. I spent about a week on Dauntless and beat everything they had at the time, but monhun can keep you entertained for months. Every game has released new content for a year or two after the games release. World was the first to have paid dlc, but it was still worth it for what you get.

      Honestly what I hate most about Dauntless us that they basically say "well its not monster hunter, its based more on the actual bossfights", but then the bossfights are like 7 enemies with different elements and a color palette change. Like seriously thats not how games work. It makes it boring, and even tho I really wanted to play, with people telling me the endgame gets better. After investing 20 hours into this game and still not having any fun I quit. It feels like some highschool project to recreate MHW. Atleast its free and not that hard on your computer, but still

      The late game of MHW and MHW:IB have intricate beasts like unicorns, manticores, and literal "black dragons" in recent updates too. I feel like this video's explanation of MHW would've been much more preferable and less biased if he actually took the meta-game/end-game into better consideration. Farming for a Vaal Hazak set (a notoriously easy Elder DRAGON) is definitely a point in the game that doesn't explore the full cast of MHW's monsters, and is indicative that he didn't explore past the campaign as much as the game actually has to offer.

I then quit after about 15hrs due to the bosses being reskins of each other really early on. I just remember everything feeling unsatisfying and janky like there was no real effort put into the game. I really liked your video but there is just a point i don't agree about. I actually played dauntless for like 1 or 2 hours i have no idea about what to do when you finish the story part. But i am hunter rank(which is the monster hunter:world rank) 151 and master rank 94 (when you buy iceborne expansion which is 40 dolars, it is like buying a whole new game). When you finish monster hunter for most of the people that is the part when the game actually starts to be enjoyable. I think you stopped playing monster hunter when you finished the game because you didn't mension about seiges. In monster hunter there are sieges like kulve tarroth and safi'jiiva(safi'jiiva is only available if you buy iceborne). Kulve tarroth siege is a monster that is a different kind of quest it has persuit levels and every time you go on a quest you try to deal as much damage as you can and most probably monster is going to escape at pursuit level 1 becacause it is the hardest pursuit level and breaking monster parts is so hard.as you break more parts during the next pursuit levels it will continue to rise to level 6 which is max once you reach level 6 which is the easiest to hunt you try to break kulve tarroth's horns. Once you break it according to the parts you've broken you get a reward level. you get randomized max level wapons and try to carve for the weapon you want. I actually spent my whole summer to get a weapon called "Tarroth sword Fire " and seiges are one of the small things that you can do. You can do investigations to augment your wapon(it is as long as siege so i won't explain). You can carve for decorations and different type layered armors(if you don't look of your armor you can use layered armor and it gives you a different look) and with the iceborne expansion there are whole different mechanics like guiding lands and steamworks(they are too long please go and seach for it if u are curious) and different monster open after you finish the game. Also there are special assignments like hunting deviljho and there is a quest where monster hunter and witcher combines and you play as gerald of rivia. Thanks if you read it this far i hope u have a better idea about monster hunter world and iceborne expansion.

      I totally agree dude I wanna add a few things wich he forgot mainly the arena in MHW also has a leaderboard so it’s not just dauntless with „challenges“ and your times will be displayed either for everyone who has your guild card or on the event arena quest the whole world. Also I don’t understand why he called it a con for MHW that certain monsters look a like in the expansion (like subspecies and stuff) but then defends the same point in dauntless saying that it is a completely different fight wich again is the same for MHW. And I also think it’s weird how he said that in dauntless you can KO monsters and stuff like that but forgets to mention that MHW has the same (the older games had it too) and about the tenderising aspect in dauntless: the clutch claw is a thing in iceborne. Although it should be mentioned that the video was made before iceborne released (could have been out on console already but he’s playing on pc) so a few aspects he couldn’t have known about like the Clutch claw but even in MHW the parts close to breaking where a bit more white showing where a lot of damage has been dealt and so on. TBH I think MHW is a much better game than dauntless (a biased opinion for sure) mainly because there are so many aspects that MHW has that dauntless doesn’t.

      @Kromo-Zome There are several factors wrong with the insinuation that their anime profile picture is bad, notably being that it doesn't fit in the context. "This person has an anime profile picture" is usually reserved for people who voice obnoxious and unhelpful opinions that would fit the stereotype of anti-social weaboo/hikikomori/otaku groups. Other minor details would be the context of society itself, becoming less critical over what is regarded as "cringe-worthy" nowadays. There's been a steered focus from shifting the ostracism over anime fans towards more immature groups, like Gacha Life adolescents. This is also just my opinion, but lastly, the character in their profile picture (which I would assume is Umaru-chan?) isn't even from an anime that I presume (?) exhibits any edgy tropes. Not to mention that it would be slightly hypocritical to point out a comedy anime profile picture, considering your own is comically driven too. Admittedly, "I cringed so hard; sorry," didn't provide a thorough basis for its opinion, but seeing as it's already valid criticism for this video, that's alright in retrospect. My assumption is that you probably attempted to degrade their opinion by pointing out a "flaw" in the speaker's character; however, you failed to see that their comment was a largely unbiased opinion that wasn't even necessarily straying on the negative spectrum. I know this issue is largely unimportant, but it creates an overall disconnect with people's willingness to discuss ideas, provide constructive criticism, and share opinions when others shame them for the misconstrued belief that certain interests a person has devalues their input. The origin of a person does indeed matter in voicing their opinion, but it's somewhat insensitive to take the stance that anyone who consumes a particular form of entertainment shouldn't be speaking about things. I also understand that your insult is unassuming, but the overused nature of it led me to think that you had this specific goal in mind when saying it. You could've simply disagreed without implicitly attacking them, assuming that you even disagree with their deduction, which wasn't even initially clarified. It would've also been better to just explain why you disagree, which would've prompted a much better conversation that doesn't portray yourself as poorly.

    Great review, refreshing to see someone who has played both games and doesn't call Dauntless a copy.
    If MHW ever gets a leaderboard system I'd like to try it, my favorite part of Dauntless is the satisfaction of spending hours grinding trials to finally get a top 100 leaderboard time, sometimes it feels undeserved because of how fast the fight goes and how little dodging is required to earn a spot on the board. Pristine damage optimization is required to keep the behemoth down longer so even though youre dodging less there's a lot of skill put into keeping the behemoth in a state where you don't have to dodge it. Since MHW has slower time to kill and less chainstaggering/staggerlocking (or so I've heard) I think I'd enjoy it more on a speedrunning/competitive level than Dauntless.

    Having played both, I can say that dauntless is just casual mhw. This is great if you don't have enough time to dedicate to monster hunter yet still want to enjoy the genre. If you are made of nothing but time, there isn't really a reason to avoid mh.
    Another thing to take into account is glitches. Dauntless has many small ones while mhw has a few major ones. If you fall through the map on dauntless or lose your weapon, press start and hit the corresponding button to fix that. If you fall through the map on monster hunter, you have to leave the hunt. It can be argued that dauntless is far inferior since the devs had to add those buttons, but it's up to our whether it's bad or not. On a personal note, I would love if more games had that button. Hunting AT Nerg, getting him to low health, then falling through the map results in an anger that cannot be described using the English language
